    I think that you may be missing a couple of subtle points that show that McQuarrie's script is even more clever than you think, and it shows why Ebert's comment wasn't really fair.
    Firstly, most of the story that Verbal tells Kujan is true. We know this because he is in a police station, where you are already informed about the heist on the ship, and come to hear about the hit on the New York Taxi Service. Plus Kujan would have been able to check the details of the story that Verbal had already given to the D.A. So in order to be internally consistent, Verbal wouldn't have been able to lie about the actual events, only the details surrounding them, which is an important point.
    We know he's already given a full statement to the DA, because Kujan is informed about it, and is told that Verbal is waiting to be released, and is, "Protected from on high".
    Therefore the main elements of the story that Verbal gives Kujan is all true. What Verbal does is use the information in the office to obfuscate his involvement, and to protect the people who had actually been working with him all along, like Kobayashi and probably Redfoot as well. The brilliance of the Verbal's story is that it is consistent with all the facts already in evidence but is able to totally deflect attention away from himself.
    My reading of the film is that Verbal is sat waiting to be released. Kujan comes in with federal backing as demands to speak to Verbal. Since he is stuck with Kujan, Verbal decides to fuck with him, especially as soon as he realises that Keaton is really who Kujan is after. So Verbal tells the story with Keaton mostly as the protagonist in order to play into Kujan's prejudices. But the clever part is where despite wanting to portray Keaton as the mastermind and throw Kujan off his scent, all the way throughout the story Verbal's ego won't allow him not to take credit for pretty much everything in subtle ways.
    Firstly, there is his reading of the line at the lineup. All the others are joking around, Verbal reads it seriously and is quite chilling. But seconds later you see him being meek and humble in the lockup with the others so you forget this moment. Later he is the one that tells everyone he came up with the plan to hit the Taxi Service. If he wanted to really throw the blame at Keaton there was the perfect opportunity, as Keaton was an ex-cop in NY, but he couldn't let anyone else take the credit.
    And when they hit the guy in the car park, it wasn't Keaton who shot and killed the guy, it was Verbal. Which is totally out of character for a physically weak, humble con man who makes his living grifting people. All the clues were there for Kujan to see if he'd wanted to, but Kujan is blinded by his hatred of Keaton and his desire to get him, that he allows Verbal to con him into believing that Keaton was Soze.
    What is even more clever, is that the more you think about it, the more self-contained and consistent the script is, in making sure all the information is there before you, and yet because of the editing, camera angles, and brilliant performances, Kujan and the audience is sold on Keaton being the bad guy, until you realise that Verbal has slipped quietly away.....
    Once you appreciate that Verbal's story isn't all a great big lie, but an incredibly well craft con made up on the spur of the moment by a genius level master criminal, it takes on another level of intelligence in my opinion. Remember, Kujan had all the facts about the hit on the guns parts shipments, the hit on the taxi service, the hit on the guy in the parking basement, and the hit on the boat. All of those were events that took place within the film. What is genius is Verbal's ability to tell the story of those facts in such a way as to convince Kujan not only tha Soze existed, but that Keaton was Soze all along, and allow Kujan to bully him into accepting it, thus making the story more convincing for Kujan. Kujan thought he "figured out" that Keaton was Soze, when it was Verbal subtly manipulating him into thinking that after he realised it was Keaton that Kujan was really after.
    Apologies for the essay, but this is my favourite film of all time, and I think people do it an injustice by saying that Verbal "made it all up". In fact Verbal was being much more clever and manipulative than that...
    Great vid btw :)

    EXCELLENT ANALYSIS. Still have shivers TODAY when I hear this: Verbal: " After that, my guess is you'll never hear from him again. The greatest trick the devil ever pulled, was convincing the world he didn't exist. And like that (wish) he is gone." That emotion I had from this ending is engraved in my brain till I die. Another favorite moment is when agent Kuyan drops his cup, and we see under the cup written: "Kobayachi" ..... I mean..... it's impossible to set up a better reveal. I watch that movie more than 30 times. A crafty peace of art.

    Yeah the revelation that Verbal Kint was Keyser Soze really took me by surprise like twenty years ago, I really trough that Keaton was Soze, and at the same time, that I have seen this kind of twist many times before, like with The Sixth Sense, so I roll my eyes, how predictable was the movie, but then as you say, the movie literally pull the carpet under my feet, and revealed that Kint was Keyser Soze, after that, I needed to watch this movie again, and I have been watching it, for time to time, ever since.

    Two points. Parts of the story would have to have been true as they can be checked on or would be known to the case agents. The lineup and the taxi cab hit are examples. But the closer you stick to the truth the better. And there is a gold cigarette lighter in the opening act used to light a cigerate, that same lighter is given to Verbal at the end, that is what clued me in.

    It's been years since I've seen this great film but since kint was given immunity , can that be negated bc he lied about his identity ? Chaz runs outside to get kint/soze I'm guessing to arrest him ?? The guy that is in the car who we thought was kobayashi is really just an assoc? The guy in the hospital was not part of the story screaming Kaiser soze so he knew what he looked like ? I know twists were done b4 notably in Hitchcock films but those movies were many years before & the twists were not like this. An audience today may be looking at kint as the obvious choice for soze but the 1996 audience was not used to twist endings at all so this was shocking. I saw this in the movies with my parents at like 14 & everyone was blown out. I can't tell u the feeling it is the first time you see this movie. Ur literally just shocked & I remember in the car we were all going over the movie all excited about what's real what wasnt etc. The sixth sense was a similar shock but it took me longer to get it lol. Bc the theatre was so loud buzzing I saw the ring on the floor people were so loud so I'm looking at my friend like what happened then when u see him dead after the gun shot from earlier u get it. That movie freaked me out with ghosts . Also m night decided every movie he made had to have a big twist. Maybe cause the audience demanded it but after signs I was sick of the " twist " bc ur just watching but also waiting for it. I find not expecting it at all is what makes it so great

    I see many people believe it was all fake except the boat attack. It wasnt fake, it was blown out of proportion. They hit the taxi in NY, they killed the carpark guys, they attacked the boat with a purpose to kill the witness. What was not really there, were the Kobayashi, RedFoot or equivalent of him and of course the cripple act. They did hit the boat looking for drugs, witness got killed and all of them burned. The lawyer GF did die and Kobayashi is a real dude with probably a different name.
    The editing, the story telling method of Singer and amazing acting take this movie from a twisted robbery gone wrong and 1 witness alive being the BIG BOSS, to a masterpiece of motion picture. Why we watch movies and answer is a movie like this. No special effects, no CGI, no stunts or green room. Spacey is brilliant and I cant believe we can no longer enjoy his acting. Baldwin brother is actually very good, which shows that his character acting was used to its full potential only and only in this 1 film.
    There is a reason why IMDB's top rated 100 movies list's first 20 films has only 6 exceptional movies that are made after the year 2001. The rest are all of past decades.
    PS: Too bad this channel stopped 5 years ago.

However, that lineup scene is classic when they're all laughing as Benicio del Toro exchanges with the cops: "Hand me the keys ya cocksucka." "In English please." "Excuse me?" "In English." "Hand me the fuckin' keys ya cocksucka what the fuuuuck." The laughing wasn't in the script and Bryan Singer was pissed off that they couldn't keep straight faces. Glorious farting. Great scene, so-so movie.

Also I not think that the entire story is a lie, there a lot of lies mixed with some truths, built up by the initial statement that Kint give to the police early in the movie.

  • @chattycathydoll
    @chattycathydoll 4 года назад +12

    The greatest trick this film pulls is convincing the audience Verbal is Soze.
    Verbal is Soze's right hand man, his assassin he sends in to clean up the mess, take out the criminals and kill the witness. He's identified as Soze only because Keaton calls him that, equally why the guy in the hospital refers to him as that, the only true eye-witness has been killed.
    Think about it, from Soze's perspective, the master manipulator criminal, it's to keep his identity a secret at all costs..which he fails to do given how it ends. You really think he goes through all that, sits there chatting away when the guy who can ID him is talking to the cops? No. It doesn't matter as it's a false trail. How's Soze described? As a foreigner, yet Verbal's an American. The only person who is confirmed as existing is 'Kobayashi' who is seen picking him up. Kobayashi means small forest, as in the phrase you can't see the wood for the trees.
    He is Keyser Soze. Orchestrating everything, whilst being removed from it all at the same time and still not identified.

    • @srnorty8057
      @srnorty8057 Год назад

      OP is dead right - Verbal is not Keyser Soze. The film would make no sense if Verbal were Soze, because the entire point of everything that happens is that Soze is trying to eliminate the last living person who can identify him. But if Verbal is Soze, then his plan is a complete failure - he can now be identified by the detective.
      The film-makers make it very clear in the last scene that Verbal is not Soze. Throughout the story, Soze is identified with the devil. The one thing the devil can't disguise about himself is his cloven hoof - hence Verbal being shown with a twisted foot. But at the end he straightens his foot, which is the film-makers telling us he is not the devil, i. e. he is not Soze.

      @@jbard9892 Keaton wasn't his mark. The Hungarian witness on the boat was, and he survived.

      @@davelowets When I referred to Keaton as his mark I meant in the sense that he was setup, along with the rest of crew. They were scammed, used for Soze's purposes, and killed. The Hungarian wasnt the target, Arturo was. And neither survived, Arturo died on the boat and Oshkosh (?) died later in the hospital.

    I definitely agree with Ebert’s point of view. The plot was so complicated and then the ending comes out of the blue, leaving us still disentangling the twisted plot which was all a lie. Too much to handle IMHO.

      The screenwriter might have wanted to make you watch the movie again. The entire story couldn't have been a lie because the police had already written a report (Dave Kujan is a Customs agent that IMO Soze was messing with).
