  • Does your baby gagging on food freak you out?!
    Repeat after me…”Gagging is a good thing!!”
    Gagging IS a good thing when your baby is learning how to eat - and gagging is very different from choking.
    I know it’s not fun to watch but gagging on food is a natural and necessary part of your baby’s learning how to eat process.
    …and as weird as it may seem, watching videos of other babies gagging on food and then recovering on their own can give YOU confidence in your baby’s ability to do the same.
    In this video I’m showing you 10 babies gagging on food - and I have lots more gagging videos over on my Instagram page @babyledweanteam / babyledweanteam if you search the hashtag #gusandhannahgag

    • @babyledweaning
      @babyledweaning  Год назад +3

      Having or not having teeth is not a pre-requisite for eating. Some babies don't get teeth until after age 1 but it is will known that we need to start offering complementary foods at 6m of age. It's amazing what babies can and do eat if we set the up for success when they are ready, which is at 6 months + when showing the other reliable signs of readiness to eat

      I'm sorry to hear this and most babies do recover on their own from a gag and go right back to self-feeding. If you're not seeing that and you're concerned - could you ask your primary for a referral to a speech language pathologist who specializes in infant feeding to screen for any potential swallowing disorder? I agree! Where is the actual evidence on baby led weaning. My mum had 8 of us all fed purees and than gradually finger foods, so we were all spoon fed and guess what, we eat absolutely everything. Even as children we ate whatever our mum gave us. And now my eldest son is almost 3 and I fed him traditional way like my mum did, and he eats great. He wants to eat and try any food. So don't be fooled by BLW. That will not prevent your child from being fussy. And come on what adults do you know who walk around and can't chew. I believe that eating together as a family, making children realise food is a blessing , making mealtimes enjoyable with family are makes the least fussiest eaters.

      @@standrea8537 There is no universal "traditional way" of introducing babies to solids. BLW is a name coined not too long ago but the method has been around for yonks and is the more familiar way for many cultures or just people's own generational practices. Should we give water when baby gags ?

    • @joandsarah77
      @joandsarah77 2 месяца назад

      The gag reflex in babies is in the middle of the tongue, not close to the wind pipe like ours is.
      You can offer water with a meal but no more than about 2oz and this can be at any point. If you offered after each gag you could easily give them too much.
      The best way to reduce gagging is to have the baby portioned correctly. This means straight not twisted or slumped, feet on a footrest to keep their core strength. Also be sure to not angle the baby or the spoon back, you want it to be level, if its on an angle the baby will tip their head back. Also don't overload the spoon if spoon feeding, use one with a tiny shallow bowl and small amounts.

    Comparing gagging to walking is unfair and inaccurate. We are addressing an airway issue that needs protected, not bumping into a table. Of course parents are going to be more anxious about something that can compromise the baby's airway.

      I was also leaning more towards waiting. Back then when breast milk was the only thing available most babies didn’t eat food until they had teeth. I have a 14 month old and he still eats little tiny chunks of strawberries carrots broccoli mashed up really good small pieces. He has two top and two bottom teeth and a lot of allergies so I’m waiting to get his blood work back to figure out what he’s allergic to. It’s been a struggle but the stuff you can have I’m afraid to give him bigger chunks because I feel like he still struggles with the small pieces and he’s 14 months old. I feel like he’s behind other babies and I don’t know what to do. I don’t think anything is wrong with it but I see kids that are younger than him eating full plates of meals. We still keep him on toddler formula. Our pediatrician recommended until we can get his allergies in order. Any tips for the bigger chunks?

    Las arcadas vienen acompañadas de jugo gástrico!!!!!!! Sus esófagos quedan todos irritados.
    Además su pequeño estómago no es apto aún para digerir comida en trozos enteros!!! Ni siquiera el estómago de un adulto lo es!
    Cuál es la #!*# prisa en darle de comer comida entera si aún no tienen dientes??? O entonces para que sirve nuestra dentadura???????

    That's gonna be a no from me dog. Before parents had the Internet telling us what to do, I seriously doubt ancient peoples were strapping their babies to a plastic highchair with straps, stressfully watching them turn beet red with tears streaming down their faces, taking cpr courses, and using an app telling them to cut their kiwi in dang stars or rectangles based on age. Everything about these poor babies struggling feels so wrong to my mama instinct! Maybe they have such a gag reflex for a reason. Not to mention the idea that its "normal" in BLW for undigested food to pass into the diaper, whereas there is research linking undigested foods with gut permeability in adults. Only speaking for myself here! But to me personally something about this feels like a fad and feels wrong.

    Gagging can turn into choking! Why would you give your infant solids that they can't properly chew? And why would you put your child at risk for choking?!?!

      gagging is a natural and necessary part of learning how to eat, while choking is a potentially life threatening situation. Gagging and choking are 2 very different things and it is important for parents to know the difference when they are helping their baby safely transition to solid foods.

      SERIOUSLY. Most ridiculous fad I’ve ever seen.

      @@babyledweaningGaggging a natural response to DANGER. To sit there and watch them do it and turn around and encourage them to do the same thing is ridiculous. Millions of children learn to eat WITHOUT their parent sitting there watching after having given them the very food that they KNEW was likely to cause it. Repeatedly! Completely perverse practice! smh 🤦‍♀️
