Secret of evermore was one of few games that are the basis of current "RPG" classifications. That was truly and RPGA and now everone calls it an RPG. They have failed to keep the classification, and yet forget that because of the SNES and squaresoft independently they have the current battle systems used by most of the popular titles. 7th saga was such a great game, so...many...hours...to level up and try to keep up. When I played there was no internet to see that the AI would always be insane to beat. Oh and the breath of fire games were amazing but agreed with the speed up at the least with walking the dungeons and world map.
I believe Metal Saga was a spiritual successor to Metal the Metal Max series rather then being part of the series, much like Fallout is to Wasteland. Also Metal Max Xeno was released in the US a couple of months ago but honestly so far I find it a letdown compared to Metal Max Returns.

@@gabemewell3643 i've never played it and i would like to, just not sure if i wanna go the emulation route. and sure there's repros but i don't know if i would wanna go that route either.
I love secret of the stars, it's mainly nostalgia because everything you said is fair but I played it with my grandma so much in third grade. She liked the game so much she called the video store we rented it from and told them her dog ate it and kept it, I have that same cart today and it brings back fond memories.
I just played Xardian the night before last and agree with you. It's a good game but it's just so slow. There are other games that fix that problem that you'd rather play. If it was faster and their were a few more differences in the three players, it would really stand out.
Secret of the Stars! That game was my gateway into RPGs as a kid when my dad rented it in the mid 90's. It would really be amazing if it was remade with the grindfest fixed and a refined script.
Fun video and a good topic. Xardion looks like my type of game in screen shots, but it doesn't play the way I'd like. The graphics and switching concept remind me of Valis 4 on PC Engine. I believe Super Valis 4 didn't have the switching, but it's been a while. I agree about Marvel Super Heroes. It's not a terrible game and the concept is great, but the design is lacking. I feel the same about X-Men: Mutant Apocalypse. It looks good and the concept is great, but the design is mixed. I thought Ninja Warriors Again was a much better take on that flat-plane beat-em-up game and a good one to imitate. I hope the update to that one lives up to the SNES game, and I hope they announce it for more platforms.
Great list! _Metal Max_ is such a badass looking series, and although I've played the only translation out there that you've shown here already...I want more! Hopefully we'll get them someday.
*Chrono Trigger... is my favorite jrpg of all time... but I wouldn't mind something with even better graphics. *King of the Dragons... a simple beat them up, that could use a modern take to it, could be fun as a couch coop with new improve graphics and some new mechanics. *FFVI ... I know everyone is so hype about FFVII coming out... but FFVI was always my favorite. Cheers
Try Video Kid on the Switch (wait for it to be on sale though). Basically the same game, except you're Marty and you are delivering VHS's on your way to Jessica's house. Bunch of 80's/90's references in the game too.
Great video, as always. I did want to ask, isn't an updated version of Marvel Super Heroes: War of the Gems just basically Marvel: Ultimate Alliance 1 & 2? Or did you have something else in mind?
Xardion is one of my all time favorite snes games, why ? 1- amazing music , especially level 1 2- 3 mechs, and they become 4 3- one mech dies and that was new in snes games, losing a hero that u loved. 4- so many weapons. 5- good artstyle for the time 6- a good story behind it. 7- really organic feel to it, the last stages were disgusting. 8- that ending, one of the best endings . 9- huge plot twist when they find the tomb of the girl. 10- it feels involved when the heros talk between each other. but there is a missed thing it, the lack of horizontal shooting stages sicne the mechs can become planes, they needed a few stages like that. all and all, one hell of an underrated gem of a game.
I'd love to see a modern Kirby's dream course. they don't have to make it look like an amazing game because I don't mind what it looks like when it was originally released on the snes, just add more multiplayer courses and allow people to play it online against each other. of course setting rules making sure that if you take way too long to take your turn your turn gets skipped.
I had really liked Tecmo Secret of the Stars. Rented it multiple times. That was probably one of my first RPGs, so I didn't have a lot of context at the time. I eventually bought a copy when rental stores were selling their inventory. Haven't touched it in a long time, but I do remember how irritating walking the world map was because of the monster encounter rate, but there are neat concepts in it like the town the main character helps build.
They did release Metal Max Xeno not too long ago for the PS4. Though this one's pretty linear, it still has that very creative art direction and crazy amount of tank customization.
I love Secret of the Stars. I've owned it since way back in the day when I got it as a gift. I didn't ask for it and knew nothing about it, so it was quite the surprise. It was good for it's time, but the plot is below average and confusing sometimes, especially when it comes to the main villain. Everyone thinks that the plot is bad due to the translation being so horrible, but I read that for the most part the plot is actually quite accurate to how it is in the Japanese version. Anyway, the battle speed can be sped up a LOT in the options, and even sped up slightly further if you turn off the battle animations. Walking speed can't be sped up at all unfortunately, but that was how nearly all RPG's were back then. They were all very slow like that. As for the grinding, I don't mind it at all. Again, that was normal for the time. This is more of an old school Dragon Quest clone, so if you don't like the older Dragon Quest games you're probably not going to like Secret of the Stars.
A 7th Saga remake could do so much more than just balance or graphical updates. What modern computing capacity could really bring to it would be much more sophisticated AI for the CPU controlled apprentices. If you get into a fight, they might eventually forgive you (instead of being permanently set to "attack on sight"). They might partner up independently of you. Or take Runes from each other without your intervention. They could approach you rather than waiting for you to talk to them. When you find a new Rune, your partner could have more potential reactions than "Do nothing" or "Attack to steal all your Runes." Some kind of negotiation could happen or they could attempt to surreptitiously steal them. When you ditch a partner after getting Runes, they don't just let you have them: you have to fight or negotiate, possibly forcing you to get them back. You could have stealth missions in which you try to steal Runes from your rivals rather than fight them for it or hope they're in a joining mood. And the likelihood of a given reaction could be weighted both by which character you chose and your interactions thus far. For example, it could be that Wilme respects strength, so fighting him might make him more compliant in the future, while Valsu abhors unnecessary violence, so you have to play nice to stay in his good graces. Heck, add in the ability to assemble a group of more than 2 and you can suddenly start cribbing notes from stuff like Baldur's Gate. Keeping NPC versions of Valsu and Lejes working together would be a delicious RP balancing act. Plus, in the game as it exists, you're guaranteed to be the first to find all but two of the Runes. And while the identity of the person who beats you to each of those is random, the events are otherwise entirely scripted. Making it possible to win or lose the race to get any given Rune would add a lot of replayability. It could be a speedrun style challenge to be the first to get every Rune. Or you could optimize for PvP and let others do the dungeons while you swoop in to take their hard-earned prize. And, of course, you could make each character more unique in terms of story. Each of them should have at least one sidequest that only they can do. There should be multiple solutions to every problem, not unlike how there are three different ways to get to the northern half of the continent. For example, with the Water Rune, you could either help the villagers as you do in the game as published, or you could steal from them, or threaten them, or straight up murder the Elder, or offer a hefty bribe. I've, uh, given this quite a bit of thought. 7th Saga has so many good ideas that, whether because of hardware limitations or too short (or underfunded?) a development cycle, it could only hint at. I would love to have the time, skills, and opportunity to do something like this.
Awsome video! Thanks for your opinion and showing me a few games I hadn't known about that I look forward to playing now! Even if they don't have modern updates!
That "bro from 1993" is damned iconic in relation to that game. He'd have to come back. :) Then again, nowadays, someone might mistake him for a David Tennant era Doctor Who fan. :D
I would friggin LOVE a Goof Troop sequel/expansion sort of thing. Such an awesome and underrated game. Normally I kinda hate co-op/2 player stuff but it just works so well in that game.
Hmmm... what about asynchronous multiplayer for 7th Saga? For example: You have 7 characters to choose from, and when you finish the game you can upload the "ghost" of your playthrough to be used as a rival in the games of other people who didn't choose the same character. This way the game would still be essentially single player, but the performance of the rival characters would be dinamically different each playthrough
I played Secret of the Stars once way back in the day. Even 11 year old me wasn't impressed as I had already played Final Fantasy and Chrono Trigger at that time. It was like Baby's First JRPG.
There is a sequel of sorts of Metal Max Returns for the PS2 called Metal Saga, and it was released state-side. Very underrated game in my opinion, I loved pretty much everything about it, so much that I'm in interested in picking up the new Metal Max Xeno for PS4 despite the lukewarm reception I'm seeing.
I'm not familiar with 'Metal Max Returns', but if my eyes aren't deceiving me, that UI borrows quite a bit from Earthbound. That font, especially. Any connection? Version of the same engine, maybe?
There is a improvement fan patch out there for Tecmo SoTS, not a full fix but does fix some issues. Tecmo is still a great game, a little broken with some game breaking glitches but worth the playthrough to see the bad translations. Would love to see a remake :3
Metal Max Xeno is on PS4 if you're interested in playing it. It's not a straight remake, as it's a sort of continuation, but it requires no real backstory. It's a JRPG take on Mad Max, with Tanks.
My pick would be the Super Famicom Shin Megami Tensei titles SMT I and II (especially II) were a little over ambitious and it shows There are glaring flaws like the game being ridiculously unbalanced in the players favour, to the point where you can comfortably autobattle 90% of battles The worlds are really cool in concept but a lot of the detail is on battle backgrounds instead of in the field and seeing these worlds be fully realised would be dope Also getting a modernised fusion system would be really nice
@Ugly Mofo Predator I wouldn't really say that's true, I think they're pretty much as easy as each other (if we're talking the SFC games) Granted, you're more likely to die on a random encounter because sometimes they'll charm you, land a lucky Mudo or reflect your attacks but other than that you're pretty unlikely to die.
@Ugly Mofo Predator Yeah, I was really shocked by how easy the game is. Especially considering how SMT has a reputation for being really hard. Considering old FF and DQ is hard I thought it'd only follow that old SMT is too. Status effect bullets break the game honestly.
I would like a new version of Ogre Battle. Also, I love the SNES version of SimAnt more than the PC version and would love to see the SNES version updated for more modern systems. Keep the cartoony style since I think it was very charming. Just higher resolution and better audio quality. Keep the SNES soundtrack style as well, but maybe just get Mark Mothersbaugh to do it, assuming he didn't some how secretly do the SNES version. Every other 16bit game I want remade is from Sega unfortunately. (Landstalker, Road Rash, Phantasy Star 2-4, Sonic Spinball, Fatal Labyrinth.) But while I am here, why the HELL hasn't Midway rereleased Smash TV and the old Rampage games, like ever? (Though technically they recently released a mini-arcade for Rampage, but still.)
Well, recently the newest entry on Metal Max series was released for PS4 in west, is called Metal Max Xeno (In japan was released on Vita too), don't know if worth the buy because... Too expensive here in Brazilian PS Store

you are one the best current youtube channels!! I love videos like this in particular as studios always remake the easy sells these days i.e. remaking already good games that have no business being remade, as opposed to the crude gems that could be refined to modern greats
I recently finished Hagane, I wish that got a sequel on the PS1 or the Saturn.
a re-release would also be nice. port it to the switch or something because that game is expensive as hell.
Tell me about it, I had to emulate it lol.
@@gabemewell3643 i've never played it and i would like to, just not sure if i wanna go the emulation route. and sure there's repros but i don't know if i would wanna go that route either.
Aquaman pulling off his best DDP impression
1 thumbs up received
SNESdrunk is feeling great!
Excellent hit
Thumbnail made me think of it, ps1 fans NEEDS a remake.
Tecmo "Deception".
Would love to see that, and more arcade sports games. NBA JAM or Blitz.
I’d say keep 90’s bro in Zombies Ate My Neighbors. The retro scene is doing great right now and I think the “attitude” he has will help sell the game!
Hell yes to A Goof Troop expansion!
That one boss on xardion, my brain interpreted when only the head was visible as a giant hamster made of steam. Now I can't unsee it😂
Another GREAT video from the man, the myth, the snes legend himself :)
I am SO glad someone else remembers 7th Saga
I love secret of the stars, it's mainly nostalgia because everything you said is fair but I played it with my grandma so much in third grade. She liked the game so much she called the video store we rented it from and told them her dog ate it and kept it, I have that same cart today and it brings back fond memories.
@Kc Mays my grandma taught me how to play games. She loved chrono trigger and FF6. Such good times lol
That idea for Zombies is gold.
Check out "The Walking Vegetables" - it's basically a remake of Zombies ate my neighbors, and it's great! Just released on the Switch.
I’d like a follow up to Chaos in the Windy City, I wouldn’t care if it was a modern day player or maybe based off of a different sport
Cheers
This is right up there with AVGN for me.
"Linear in a roundabout sort of way" haha I love it!
I would like a remake of Paper Boy.Keep everything intact, but the graphics are brand new and it's rebuild is in 4K.
Try Video Kid on the Switch (wait for it to be on sale though). Basically the same game, except you're Marty and you are delivering VHS's on your way to Jessica's house. Bunch of 80's/90's references in the game too.
I always felt like the 7th Saga has an adventure-game “sequel” in Brain Lord.
Great video, as always. I did want to ask, isn't an updated version of Marvel Super Heroes: War of the Gems just basically Marvel: Ultimate Alliance 1 & 2? Or did you have something else in mind?
Xardion is one of my all time favorite snes games, why ?
1- amazing music , especially level 1
2- 3 mechs, and they become 4
3- one mech dies and that was new in snes games, losing a hero that u loved.
4- so many weapons.
5- good artstyle for the time
6- a good story behind it.
No love for Soul Blazer?! It was the Dark Cloud before Dark Cloud existed!
Loved 7th saga
Still pissed that we never got Mystic Ark, which magazines were touting as "7th Saga II" a the time.
Like your work and glad I found you.
SNES Drunk is killing it this year! Well done, sir.
Metal Marines!! Loved that game
Lagoon will always be my top choice for a needed remake. The original is so flawed but a proper Falcom styled remake could turn it into a real gem.
That Precious Moments box art lol.
The pixel art on Metal Max is really cool, love these enemies
You'd never seen the comic book games redone. The licensing requirements would be prohibative.
0:24 Fight, Drunk, for everlasting peace!
That "bro from 1993" is damned iconic in relation to that game. He'd have to come back. :) Then again, nowadays, someone might mistake him for a David Tennant era Doctor Who fan. :D
That end music was fantastic
I would friggin LOVE a Goof Troop sequel/expansion sort of thing. Such an awesome and underrated game. Normally I kinda hate co-op/2 player stuff but it just works so well in that game.
Hmmm... what about asynchronous multiplayer for 7th Saga? For example: You have 7 characters to choose from, and when you finish the game you can upload the "ghost" of your playthrough to be used as a rival in the games of other people who didn't choose the same character. This way the game would still be essentially single player, but the performance of the rival characters would be dinamically different each playthrough
That is a great idea
Xardion looks cool
Never heard if Metal Max. The graphics totally remind me of the SNES Final Fantasy games!
Metal Max looks amazing! Tank RPG? Yes please!
“This bro...” I come for the content...live for the wry humor....
My pick would be the Super Famicom Shin Megami Tensei titles
SMT I and II (especially II) were a little over ambitious and it shows
There are glaring flaws like the game being ridiculously unbalanced in the players favour, to the point where you can comfortably autobattle 90% of battles
The worlds are really cool in concept but a lot of the detail is on battle backgrounds instead of in the field and seeing these worlds be fully realised would be dope
Also getting a modernised fusion system would be really nice
@Ugly Mofo Predator I wouldn't really say that's true, I think they're pretty much as easy as each other (if we're talking the SFC games)
Granted, you're more likely to die on a random encounter because sometimes they'll charm you, land a lucky Mudo or reflect your attacks but other than that you're pretty unlikely to die.
(Landstalker, Road Rash, Phantasy Star 2-4, Sonic Spinball, Fatal Labyrinth.)
But while I am here, why the HELL hasn't Midway rereleased Smash TV and the old Rampage games, like ever? (Though technically they recently released a mini-arcade for Rampage, but still.)
Well, recently the newest entry on Metal Max series was released for PS4 in west, is called Metal Max Xeno (In japan was released on Vita too), don't know if worth the buy because... Too expensive here in Brazilian PS Store
I never have beaten 7th Saga, but I have a file with decent progress and a good party (Valsu and Esuna) and it's definitely on the bucket list.
Tales of Phantasia!, I don’t know why no one talks about that game... I love it
Great picks, esp. Metal Max series
If there is a remake of Secret of the Stars, I still want "Please let Golan to be defeated!" left in.
U.N. Squadron / Area 88
slowdown was bad, although it could help you dodge
I'd love to hear more about Metal Max Returns!
