You should add that "Sheng Long" DID make it into street fighter 4 as "Goken" and one of his win quotes is "You must defeat ME to stand a chance".

The General Leo myth was responsible for me getting a joke into Lunar Eternal Blue. Back in the early 90s Compuserve had a really great game devs forum, it was mostly fans that were active, but there were many developers that spent time on the forum interacting w fans, including Victor Ireland of Working Designs. There were also many threads debating the General Leo resurrection myth. The Lunar games had a really off the wall sense of humor, especially from random NPCs, I was a huge fan and so about a year before Lunar EB released I wrote a joke about General Leo comparing the myth to Elvis sighting rumors (I forget the exact wording), submitted it to Victor, never heard back from him on it. Then months later after I got Lunar Eternal Blue I was playing the game, made my way to Ghaleon's Secret Garden and one of the fairies makes a joke about General Leo being a "two-bit entertainer". My jaw hit the floor. I immediately ran to my pc, sent Victor a message asking him if that was really my joke (bc I couldnt believe it) and he replied saying that he "took fan suggestions very seriously." 24 years later I still can't believe it.

That's really cool, though not surprising. Working Designs really was a great company and took the time to make the games relevant to Western audiences in terms of jokes. I mean, name another game where there is a reference to Clinton? I really miss that company. Lunar isn't the same without them. I think I'll go start a new game in Lunar 2 now.

A big SNES rumor for me was the existence of Schala in Chrono Trigger. I remember that I had a Game Players magazine with the "Ultra 64" on the cover circa 1995, and a snippet pertaining to Chrono Trigger made mention of Schala. Where it said something to the effect of "Not even Squaresoft knows if you can actually find Schala". I spent hours scouring the time periods seeing if she would ever show up but nada. I had a Master System when it was current. One day, I turned it on accidentally without a game in it. No big deal. I mashed some buttons on the controller and accidentally found the secret Snail Maze game built in. No one would have believed me, if there was anyone to tell, since no one had a Master System.
I remember Reptile appearing once for me in the arcade with one of his hints. I don't think anyone believed me when I told them. I played that game a ton in the arcade and only ever saw him once.
My favorite myths of the SNES is that everything is mode 7. For example, the foot soldiers in Turtles in Time tossed at the screen. It's not mode 7, despite so many claims that it is. It's not even scaling. It's fake scaling. And the effect is still great.
Plenty of games cheat. I've played beat-em-ups where the collision detection would consistently turn off in a certain context to give bosses an extra advantage. And in Street Fighter 2(and probably other fighters), the game is programmed with CPU logic that uses your button inputs against you. When you fight the CPU, many times, you will notice that when you hit the button for an attack, the CPU will attack you at that moment with an attack that has priority. That's because the game is using your button press as the trigger for the move by the CPU. It's consistent and repeatable. To beat the CPU, you have to exploit its routines. It totally cheats.

My favorite EGM April Fool's was the one from...I'm gonna say April of '91 (it's been a while). In TMNT 2: The Arcade Game on NES, there was an absolutely impossible code to enter on the title screen that would allow you to play as Simon Belmont. The fact that it was impossible didn't stop me from trying feverishly to train my fingers to input it fast. The EGM article asked you to try it several times then read the name of the person who sent it in. The name was "A.P. Rilphuuls" and he was from "Fromegem, HA". That blew my mind for years until I finally understood it. Yep, got me there.

Love the last one. I knew the AI cheats. Many a games I've played after all where the AI just simply go " _Nope, you're not winning._ " x3
I mean, I have a video on my channel from MK1 on Snes that I slowed down heavily just to show that that the AI grabs me out of a move right before it hits.
The video is titled " _Mortal Kombat - The AI is a bloody cheater!_ "
I got one that I still have no idea how I managed to do, but it was on the PS1 version of Mega Man X3 ( _JP version borrowed of a classmate_ ).
On the reploid select screen, I had just been dying over and over to every single one, so I was frustrated and just started mashing the directional key to pick someone at random.
And as I hit the button, the icon ended up at the bottom, between the reploids where the Doppler Stages pop up, and I had somehow managed to access the Doppler Stage 1 simply by mashing the directional key.
Naturally, the stage completely destroyed me but, that was a funny glitch I encountered.
Then just by playing GTA on PS1 for an extended period of time, one can encounter all sort of weird glitches in the game. Like a ghost police car that drives through you and vanishes because it was never actually _there_ according to the game.

    • @Gantann
      @Gantann 5 лет назад +5

Talking about interesting glitches we personally experience reminds me, one time while playing Shining in the Darkness (a Genesis dungeon crawler), I defeated a monster and leveled up. And then leveled up again. And again. I decided to see where this would go instead of resetting the game and after a few minutes of mashing through dialogue boxes I reached the natural conclusion of this bug: I had jumped from level 10-something to 99 in a single battle!
Unfortunately this was before I got my other party members, so they still joined at level 1.

They can jump up and catch pop flies, especially when they would result in a home run, because they're able to jump when their characters aren't on the screen. Human players, meanwhile, can't trigger their characters to jump if they're off-screen, making such catches impossible because by time your jump reaches the height necessary to catch the ball, it's already passed over your head.

It is actually possible to get General Leo back in your party through a very complex glitch. You essentially retrigger an event that puts Banon in your party but the game puts Leo there instead due to story flags. You can’t get him into Kefka’s Tower and its not official at all, but its not completely impossible. Look up the Airship Glitch.

Came here to say this. Kotaku did a great article on this glitch back in 2012. Another interesting glitch of note is a variation of the '64 doors' glitch from FFIV. If you should die 64 times following some very specific circumstances you can trigger the end sequence of the game. This glitch has made it possible to easily "beat" the game in under two hours even if you're not a speedrunner.

For any of these secret codes to work just remember that: you must be facing away from the screen, you must wear a green shirt, it must be Thursday, remember that your socks should not combine because otherwise the trick will not work.

It was rumored that if you didn't attack the slot machine (which is accessed through the asteroid belt), it would get frustrated and would subtitle "You are not worthy for Andross" and would send you back to the beginning of the belt. It was rumored that you would have to ignore the slot machine for nearly an hour for this event to be put into motion. I've never done any extensive research on this, nor have I decided to invest an hour to try to find out. You actually totally can glitch general Leo into your party after his death in Final Fantasy 6. It is pretty involved, you have to never save after you leave the first town, then game over after doing some specific things on the floating continent to manipulate the flag of whether you are supposed to have an airship, which has the effect of sending you to the last save with your levels and equipment still intact but back at the beginning story state. But because of the flag you manipulated you have the airship next to you which works for one flight before the glitch corrects itself. You use that to do some sequence breaking shenanigans, and also do a glitch later to leave south Figaro without getting Celes, the game fills in her slot with one of the random moogles from the opening cave in Narshe. But because you broke sequence earlier the game loads in Leo from his event because that's the current event state.
You have to do a crap ton more weird glitches to get him into the party in a stable state in the world of ruin without soft locking, but it is actually possible! It's a lot more detailed than what I just listed though.

I remember the infamous Broken Antenna and Gutsy Bat in Earthbound. Everyone who bought the game brand new got a player's guide for free, so we all had it in Elementary School. The guide listed Jeff's ultimate weapon as the Gaia Beam and said you needed to fix the Broken Antenna to get it, but the guide left out how to get the Broken Antenna. The guide also said you could get the Gutsy Bat from the Kraken in Ness's dreamworld and had a special section on it and everything, making it seem official. Both weapons were myths to us because nobody ever got them. Some of us spent hours trying to get the Gutsy Bat from the Kraken and some people lied saying they got it. I do not think anyone ever claimed to have found the Broken Antenna. I did not learn until later after High School that both weapons were in the game after all. The Broken Antenna is a 1/128 drop from a monster in the 7th Sanctuary (that the guide neglected to mention even existed) and the Gutsy Bat is a 1/128 from the Bionic Kraken just before the Giygas fight, not the Sea of Eden Kraken.

I thought that Cid’s health was rather apparent, with his changing dialogue depending on the types of fish you bring him. You can also check the quality of fish you pick up in your key item inventory, looking to get “just a fish” or a “yummy fish” if you want his health to improve. Even though it doesn’t change much past the “leaving the island” scene, I’m glad that they didn’t pull their punches here and had it so you could actually fail.

I've saved Cid before, but I usually just end up killing him because it can take way too long for the good fish to keep appearing, and the scene with Celes when he dies just has so much more emotional impact.

I remember one about continually hopping on a koopa troopa descending some steps to get dozens of extra lives in Super Mario. Wasted so much time trying to get it work . . . . until it did.

That subtle Spaceballs reference... Thank you for that!

One thing also with General Leo: the guest characters all share the same character slots as the permanent ones. Even the moogles that help in one section all coincide with a specific character. In order for Leo to be a permanent member, another character would have to be replaced.
