FUN TRIVIA: there was a former Twins prospect named Henri Stanley who never made the big leagues & his biggest claim to fame is that in 2004 the Red Sox traded him to the Dodgers for some dude named Dave Roberts not sure whatever happened to him...
SNES drunk I love your work!!!!!!!! I wasn't a huge SNES fan more of Sega Genesis type guy. But anyways I can just picture you doing a segment on the hardest boss edition. Which you explain what games had the hardest boss to deal with that was a pain in the ass. Lol. Peace.
What about Knightmare Maze of Galious?
If you like bionic commando you've got to check out Ninja Five-0. A dumb name, but easily one of the best titles on the GBA and one of the best action platformers of all time. It takes the grappiling hook mechanic to another level
Bionic Commando rules. Better than Metroid and Contra in my opinion.
A The Guardian Legend sequel is such a missed opportunity.
Imagine Inti Creates giving it Blaster Master treatment...
TRUTH
That Bionic Commando soundtrack is just pure choice.
@Roger's No-Commentary Videos it's New Zealand slang for "really cool, awesome, sweet, etc." ( I'm not a Kiwi.)
The magic of scheherazade is a game I loved as a kid, and one I always wanted a sequel for, but was almost forgotten to me, so its cool to see someone talk about it
MAGIC OF SHEHERAZADE needs it's own video , the game is one of the best on NES....
Honestly, it is I think the most underated game on the console. Nobody talks about this game. Was very happy to see him talk about it in this video.
it was a great gem
That game was easily my favorite game on the NES and got me into gaming to begin with as a child, its amazing. Deserves a full remake tbh
The guardian legend has one of the best nes soundtracks
im glad some one else here appreciated Magic of Scherherazade!
I'm surprised there was never a SNES follow up to Metal Gear, Especially as all the other Konami IP's did.
Knowing how poorly Kojima regards the two NES games, I suppose he may have put his foot down if the idea was floated.
@@willmistretta Someone should have just suggested porting the official sequel instead.
Snes Drunk is simply one of the best RUclips Channel out there ! Informative and Fun! Cheers from Brazil man, great work!
Bionic Commando did get a sequel of sorts on Game Boy Color as Bionic Commando: Elite Forces and it did a good job pushing the gbc to it's limits.
I haven't heard of that one.
Love your channel
Its pleasantly commented with knowledge
Thank you so much for mentioning Guardian Legend. My favorite NES game.
I am so glad you put Battle of Olympus in there; one of my all-time favorite NES games.
It has great music, challenging platform sections, a good selection of power-ups and good controls (although some may hate the stair mechanics).
I always hope that someday / somehow we get a remake or even better, a sequel, but I don't think it'll ever happen. I don't mind the olive grinding, but that might be my inner nostalgia nerd speaking. The one thing I don't like about BoO is the continue feature.
If you die there are 2 options:
1) You choose continue and you enter the last zone you were in, but with half your olives.
2) You choose retry and start from where you last 'saved' your game (aka where you last kneeled in front of a god/godess)
I get that they tried to be nice by having retry be the exact same as using the password from the title screen, but a battery save would have been so much better...
But that's my gripe with a ton of NES games, so that's maybe not really fair.
Battle Of Olympus is so underrated. Nice to see I'm not the only one who likes it.
@@johnnihil1689 I grew up with the game, recorded it for youtube AND streamed it last year on Twitch haha
The game needs some more love, dangit.
@@SmashTom I really don't understand why someone like Pat The NES Punk or James Rolfe haven't done anything on Battle Of Olympus or Clash At Demonhead. 2 great games that nobody talks about. Astyanax is another favorite that often gets ignored. Then there's Code Name No Pants.
never found a Battle of Olympus sequel in there...unfortunatly
Bionic Commando may be my favourite capcom game to be honest. Great music, great action, choice in where you go, so many great things that many NES games lacked.
I have very fond memories of that game thanks to having it as a kid. I remember a Saturday my friend and I hunkered down and beat the game. We were in awe of Hitler's head exploding, it was such a "What ! Did that just happen !?!?" Love it.
You're doing the Lord's work, son. Continue to do so.
From now on when someone asks me what I do for a living I will take a gulp of my drink and reply with a thousand yard stare and these words "Punching snakes... and grinding for olives." Thanks Drunk!
Also they shoulda made another Star Tropics game! its soooo good!
They did: Zoda's Revenge: StarTropics 2.
There is also a Japanese Famicom title called Meikyuu Jiin Dababa with similar mechanics that came a few years before StarTropics.
I always felt like the Star Ocean series was heavily inspired by StarTropics as an almost spiritual successor.
There was a sequel but it was on the wrong system. If it had been released on the SNES we'd still be talking about it. Startropics is such a criminally overlooked franchise.
“Zee”X Spectrum? That threw me for a loop so used to hearing “Zed”X
I know, right? Even as someone from the States, I still call it "Zed Ex" in my head because that's the only thing anyone ever calls it.
So long as it doesnt go the way of gender labeling and SJW wars im fine with it being the one letter thats pronounced more than one way lol ive always said both ways
Joe Poelmans I’ve just watched too much of Ashens, Nostalgia Nerd, etc to hear it called different
Zed sounds like a name
@@joepoelmans5910 oh shut up, dude. Jesus Christ you people are unbearable.
Thumbs up for Zen!
Nice vid, man. If you want to see Solar Jetman-like game in 16 bit - try Sub Terrania on Sega Genesis. and also Joy Mech Fight reminds me Ballz 3D on Genesis/SNES
A list with Bionic Commando and Guardian Legend on it, is pure gold!!
Very fitting choices. The phrase 'one and done' seems like such a gut punch in some instances, but sometimes it is nice to have a singular experience that isn't tainted by endless, inferior sequels.
3:40 Hey, it's "Henry Stanley - Fightin' Around The World"! :D
MosoKaiser Indeed, and like real life Russell Crowe, Stanley was a piece of work in real life...
“He explores! He counts racists among his fans! It’s a pathology no one understands...”
I absolutely loved The Magic of Scheherazade. For all it's flaws, I played the heck out of it. I would have loved a sequel.
Awesome video. Awesome list of games. I hope you consider doing a part 3
SnesDrunk: Fighting snake with your bare fist
Indiana Jones would be proud
Man I love you're channel. Wish we could have you cover every system including arcade. Just done with a perfect balance of pace & useful information. Keep it going for a long time.
Love the music clips you choose from each game. That's just as important for me to understand the experience of the game as seeing and hearing about gameplay and graphics.
EDIT: Also holy shit that Joy Mech game looks goddamn amazing.
I think the nearest we got to a 16bit version of Joy Mech Fight was “Ballz” on snes and megadrive/genesis, but that game absolutely sucked arse.
Yeah, but I'm pretty sure Joy Mech Fight was a first party Nintendo title, so Ballz probably wouldn't have sucked if it had been made by them. At any rate, they should add a Joy Mech fighter into Smash Bros.
One might argue the successor to Joy Mech Fight is the Vitual Boy's Teleroboxer, which has some stylistic similarities (robots, limbs body parts have a disconnected feel) and was developed by Nintendo R&D1. That said, it's also a totally different game, more Punch-Out! than Street Fighter 2.
@@d3v1lsummoner Actually, I'd say that ARMS on the Switch is closer to Joy Mech Fight.
Imagine a reboot or remake of Guardian Legend by Inti Creates one the same level of quality as Blaster Master Zero.
Great video! Thanks for giving a little exposure on Battle of Olympus and Solar Jetman. I was beginning to think that I was the only one who appreciated those 2 games. I typically dont bring them up if I find myself in a NES conversation (I learned that lesson when I mentioned my affection for Friday the 13th to my buddy🤣), but I am glad those 2 games were finally in the spotlight. Keep the videos coming! I know I've mentioned this before, but I would like to hear your take on a "NES western series" involving Gunsmoke, Cowboy Kid, and the Lone Ranger. 3 different approaches, 3 different developers (Konami, Capcom, and Romstar), 3 terrific games! My thanks to you Sir!
Scheherezade blew me away when I rented it back in the day. Game deserves to be remembered up there with some of the greats.
Really enjoyable series that adds speculation to your cool review format. Very entertaining!
I am happy as hell that other people remember and enjoy The Guardian Legend. It's one of my favorite NES games ever and I've been imagining a sequel for literally the last 30 years. There's so much opportunity in its mix of gameplay styles and its storytelling.
Guardian Legend is a great example of a good game that could have been a great game with some minor adjustments. Great points there!
I think Ballz 3D is the 16bit Joy Mech Fight....
Just came looking for this comment. What a weird fucking game.
Rygar, Faxanadu, Willow, and Goonies 2.
I mean, Faxanadu is a spin off and part of a much larger franchise in Japan, Legacy of the wizard is one of the main games in said franchise.
Still, a full on sequal to Faxanadu would have been awesome
Would definitely be on board with a Guardian Legend follow up. Someone needs to make it happen ASAP.
I could see someone like Inticreates tackling this. I mean, look what they did with the Blaster Master games.
Not the same of course but there are hacks of the game that basically redo the entire level design and up the difficulty. Don't remember the name offhand but it should be an easy find.
I also would love to see if get some official love
Man; for the last two days I've been thinking about how there should have been a Bionic Commando 2 on the SNES. What incredible timing!
Even so, I'm surprised you made no mention of Bionic Commando Rearmed 2. That game basically was what we could have gotten, but well, with polygon graphics instead of really being on the SNES. They even expanded the formula a little so that you could actually jump, just not as well as you could swing, so it has a lot more options for deeper gameplay.
I just finished bionic commando rearmed last week, such amazing game. Thanks for the video.
I love that you put the name of the game on screen. I can take a screenshot instead of writing every game down and butchering the spelling
ZEN the intergalactic ninja is an awsome comicbook series and im glad it got some exposure from an NES game. Id like to see ZEN and his adventures on future game consoles
I don't know how ppl can dislike your videos. The 80's/90's and maybe 20's is where game developers still use their imagination to create games and is amazing. Thank you for sharing a bit of it there is a lot of games I didn't have idea they exist.
News flash: developers still use their imagination to make amazing games today.
If you don't know realize that, then you are playing the *wrong* games!
In Ninja Zen, in that isometric level, you can constantly attack in the air, and it will make you fly much longer. Which solves the "problem" that you've mentioned.
Little ninjas bros is one of my favorite games.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles on the NES should've got some sort of spiritual sequel. I actually liked how you had four different turtles to choose from with their own stats and how much replay value it has because of the random subweapon drops and the (albeit little) amount of exploring you could do in the overworld of every level. Yeah I know most people despise that game so I'm not expecting anyone to develop it right now but I'd pay a ton if I could play something like that, even if it's with a completely different setting like science-fiction, fantasy, current day or whatever.
I like that choice, good example of an ambitious game that could've been a lot better
That game is fantastic. It’s not a great ninja Turtles game, but it’s truly great.
Bloodstained: Curse Of The Moon takes a little bit from it in terms of having four characters with different powers who each have their own life bars. And you can switch between them in the same way.
I was totally gonna say Guardian Legend if you didn't mention it.
If you could somehow combine the platforming/adventure gameplay of Stanley the Search for Dr. Livingston and the sailing/world exploration/trading of Uncharted Waters New Horizons, I think they're would be a very interesting game there.
I was literally about to comment that Joy Mech Fight should have gotten a sequel.
Awww they coulda had headless MechaHitler!! Super MechaHitler sounds so beautifully 90s.
Man you gave a huge boost to my backlog thanks great video.
A bit late but an some more info on Solar Jetman: The game was designed by Zippo Games, a company comprised by brothers Ste and John Pickford, on the behalf of Rare, and included music by David Wise. The in-dev name was Iota, and basically it was a game built around a rudimentary physics simulation one of the two brothers had coded. Rare made the decision to brand it as a Jetpac/Jetman game. The reason it didn't get a sequel, aside from Zippo Games leaving Rare to pursue their dream project (Plok), is that the original didn't sell very well. Unfortunate, as it's my favorite NES title besides SMB 3.
Bionic Commndo was always one of my favorite games as a kid. And Battle of Olympus
I like watching Videos on the NES and Sega from you..... I grew up with the SNES, so a lot of the Sega and NES Games I am unaware of that you talk about
You mentioned Sigma Star Saga. This is pretty much the only time I've seen anyone mention it. What an underrated gem that game is.
I played it earlier this year ruclips.net/video/K0GwVbjZ504/видео.html
Awesome video! Bionic Commando Rearmed did get a sequel by the way, though I do wish the series had continued on snes. And I’ve always thought Sub-Terrania on the Genesis felt kinda like a spiritual successor to Solar Jetman.
First two games on this would make my top 5 list for the NES console, I think.
I was in a prog metal band and we had a song called Zen: Intergalactic Ninja. We never played the game but the title made us laugh hysterically for some reason. Glad to see it was somewhat enjoyable!
I suggested Zen:TIN a few years ago. My uncle ended up stealing it from me when I moved back from Japan. It was next level. And speaking of next level, glad you covered Bionic Commando. Two of my absolute favourites.
"Adventure Time: Hey Ice King! Why’d you steal our garbage?! " is a 3DS/DS game that draws a lot from Zelda II.
LOVE BIONIC COMMANDO. BEAT IT SUMMER OF '92.
Finally a new SNES drunk episode :) Since Dave left Game Sack, this and Gmanlives are my favorite "gaming" channels. Keep up the great work (Y)
Only ever had gameboy version of Zen great to see a full version
Nintendo Power listed a Scherazade 2 in the "Coming Soon" section right around the launch of the SNES. It was in the NES section, but it never materialized sadly...
Bionic Commando was such a great game. I forgot about that game, and all those hours I spent on it. It would have been awesome to see the sequel on the SNES.
The robot graphics in Joy Mech Fight have always reminded me of Ballz 3D...
I think the reason that "Joy Mech Fight" never got a sequel is simply because there were so many other fighters on the 16-bit platforms, and they didn't have to depend on what made it stand out in the first place: that weird, Rayman-style look that the characters had. The floating arms and legs were necessary to make the game work on NES, but 16-bit systems could do a lot more.
Thanks and you have a great rest of your day also
Joy Mech Fight is cool, it's really interesting to see Nintendo develop a more traditional fighting game, even if it's a little simplified in comparison to Street Fighter, or even some other 2 button fighters of the time...
Also, Zen Intergalactic Ninja looks impressive as hell!
Star Tropics, Kung Fu, Skate or Die, Monster Party, ... and Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde /s.
Many hours spent with Solar Jetman. Loved it.
This was the first time I heard the original version of the Solar Jetman music. I had only known the cover version from The Advantage (an NES cover band) which is freakin amazing.
I like that you were kind enough to offer a spoiler skip for Bionic Commando -even if it is 2019.
I'm sure I'm not the only one who cares about spoiling classic games...
Right?
Jet man HAD a 16-bit sequel called subtriania for the sega genesis! It was one of me and my brothers favorite!
Sub-Terrania, it is really similar
If only we could find that parallel dimension that these 16-bit sequels exist.
Actually, "Bionic Commando" did receive a SPIRITUAL successor on the SNES, it just wasn't released here. The visuals and tone are very different, but in terms of gameplay, "Umihara Kawase" is very similar.
Great video.
Chip 'n Dale's Rescue Rangers. I want a third installment!
You read my mind with this series.
I rented Zen from Meijer like twice, back in 93 or 94. That game was great. I totally forgot all about it until this video. I also would have liked to see a SNES version of little Nemo the dream master.
solar jetman is still one of my alltime favorite games. so insanely ahead of its time.
Nice to see some Solar Jetman love.
Bionic Commando..? That game looks extremely advanced for nes, especially with the swinging animation. Can't believe I never seen it.
Lol, funny i just got Zen yesterday! Do yo plan to do a full review for it?
The problem that Joy Mech Fight had was that it was also developed by a group that wasn't Nintendo. The project started as a winner of a programming contest Nintendo held, so Nintendo didn't own the full right to the game.
The developer of the game thought he gave all rights to Nintendo, when actually he didn't, so Nintendo wasn't able to create a new game in the series. In 2007, the developer found documents in his house, which were papers he was supposed to give to Nintendo so Nintendo could have the rights.
This lead to Nintendo securing the rights, and ever since then, Joy Mech Fight has appeared more and more. Its a shame too, because Joy Mech Fight could've had a much different future if it wasn't for the copyright stuff.
I LOVED Solar Jetman. Played the HELL out of that game!
Apparently the Adventure Time (popular cartoon these days) games take heavy inspiration from some classic games like Zelda and Dragon Quest.
One of them, "Hey Ice King, why'd you steal our garbage?" (For DS and 3DS) is based on Zelda 2 if I'm not mistaken.
Sadly I've only had time to play Pirates of the Enchiridion on PS4 (which is a buggy DQ-clone), but if you want Zelda 2 on modern hardware it might be worth trying.
I had Zen on my NES and loved it lol
"Dr. Livingstone I presume" 🎶🎶
Bionic commando rearmed has a sequel on Xbox 360 and PS3,but never was seen on steam. The sequel is my favorite bionic commando game and you should definitely play it if you get the chance!
You can play the game on PS4 with the PS Now subscription, I don’t know how to on Xbox One.
so THAT's where that assist trophy comes from.
Battle of Olympus is always on my hidden gems list. Zen is a good one, too, aside from the isometric messiness.
There's a "sequel" of the Bionic Commando. Bionic Commando Rearmed 2 (PS3 / X360).
Solar Jetman is one of the best NES games that no one talks about. I love it! :)
You said that Joy Mech Fight is on the Switch's NES app? I couldn't find it on their site. I'll have to check out the actual app when I get home (watching this from work!).
I would also add Snake Rattle n Roll, and Chip n Dale Rescue Rangers.
Love your videos man. I recommend you giving Magic of Scherazade a chance if you have the time. People seem to not know about the game. Its not perfect but its really good. Just think Zelda + Final Fantasy. Story is simple and pretty good as well.
There was a Bionic Commando game on PS3 and I really liked it
Great idea for a list
I keep forgetting that Zen the Intergalactic Ninja is on the NES to im so used to owning it on the Gameboy that i keep forgetting
