Good review. This car is what it is. Doesn’t need to prove anything to anyone except the owner. The most important thing is we should be so grateful to Mazda for keeping it real. Real fuel, manual with three pedals, analog gauges, hand brake, and the real roadster original platform. What more can we be thankful for. Simply no competition in the same price bracket.
Yeah, the only real rivals to this are the GR86 (which is sold in limited numbers) or the Caterham 170 (which is very compromised). Maybe we’ll have to test all three at the same time 🤔
this was the video that sold me on getting an mx-5 rf, i got the gt rs model picked it up yesterday, went from driving a BMW e36 to this brand new mx5. amazing car love driving it. great video as always lads
I have a 2019 2.0 RF sport nav, they're amazing cars. Soul red or eternal blue is the best colour imo. I'm 6ft 1 and fit alright, but mine doesn't have the recaro seats so I don't know if that's a factor. I tried sitting in an ND1 1.5 RF (again no recaros) before I got my ND2 and my head was touching the roof. Definitely less space in an ND1 RF. Great review
I had been wondering if the recaro was thicker on the back rest than the standard seat so didn't go quite as far back, I may have to nip down to the dealer and investigate
I owned the 30th Anniversary edition (bright orange) and it was without doubt a great car for the enthusiast. The gear change is up there with the best and as an ex-Honda Integra Type R driver I didn’t expect to comment on any gearbox after that one. The lightweight makes everything better and it’s the reason it’s replacemrnt was also lightweight tho I miss the gear change and roof down option. Kevin.
Skinny steering wheels are great unless you're arthritic, like me, in which case a wheel with a little more girth is worth it's weight in gold. Or copper.
@@BuckleUpShow but that would mean I have to drive a BMW! That's a joke people, I don't have a problem with BMWs. It's the BMW drivers I can't stand! Also a joke. 😁
The Homura gets bilstein dampers, and all the 2.0 cars get a front lower strut brace to help with rigidity (which I'm not sure they did in 2018). It rolls more than a Boxster, but not too much.
The roll is actually a feature of it, when you enter a corner and the roll kicks in not only does it telegraph the grip but if you lift off (slightly) it will tighten its line and off you go. Lower springs from MX5 parts can help at a reasonable cost and the accessory options to further modify are limitless.
Well, 1) it's not stock footage, it was provided by the Mazda team specifically for editorial content from this event and was filmed at the event and 2) while we might hold your attention, our overall retention figures are better with it included.
We fit (just about) in the GR86 which might clinch it for that, but I really wouldn't know unless I was literally on the way to buy either as I like them both so much
@BuckleUpShow don't know what you mean but I no problem 😊 getting in and out of it went for a long drive and no problem with hight or room to move my leg's.
At 6 ft 5" I feel your pain At 58 my sport car days are behind me and my back, but I wish I was able to fit into any mx 5 (and when I say fit I mean be able to drive without compromise) But it was never to be😢
A wireless phone charger grippy mat in the recess next to the usb's would have been a nice thing from the factory. Or even as a £150 ( so £130 profit for mazda) extra to tick.
Im not sure you can make the arguement that a new ND will hold its value. That £38k press car will be worth about £20k max on trade in 3 years. NA prob hold value
Considering three year old none RF MX-5’s are selling for over £20k today, I think it’s safe to assume it won’t depreciate that much. Plus the average three year depreciation nowadays is 55%, so even if it was £20k, that would be better than average.
@@BuckleUpShow You'll be trading in at £20k ish after three years and dealers will sell on a bit higher than that. I don't think losing 55% of initial value in depreciation can be considered holding its value is my point. It's essentially subject to same depreciation as any other new car so you can't claim a new ND will hold it's value. Which is particularly bad as most will just be used as weekend summer cars. I've got one and it pains me that its sitting in the garage for probably 330+days a year and only covers 1500/year yet is still subject to similar depreciation as most other normal cars at that price point.
Wait until the next gen mx5 is hybrid and these will go up I reckon. I don't think they'll sky rocket (it's not rare enough), but they'll be more desirable and seen as the last "true/pure" n/a MX-5
@@richboy900 I think that's a fair point. Unless new one is somehow brilliant which will be tough to replicate with a hybrid, I'd have little interest in the hybrid and look for last of the ND generation which still feels pleasingly mechanical apart from the EPAS. I swithered over buying S2000 instead of mx5. In hindsight I should have because that really has held its value/appreciated over the last 15years since they stopped production.
Reminds me of a test drive I did on a dealership for this car on a very rainy afternoon. I asked them to test it again over the following days with better weather (which is quite common in my place), they never called me back and lost a customer

@@BuckleUpShow the gr 86 in a nice car in its own right but can’t take the roof off. (Unless you have a large can opener)😊
I've just got my RF in machine gray it's fantastic. Had my Mk 2 from new and it's still mint no problems In 26 years.
You must either live in a salt free area or be meticulous about cleaning
Lived in Cyprus for twenty years but washed it meticulously while I was there and the same back in UK
If only more people took care of the cars like you, keep up the good work
So nice to see you guys enjoying a proper drivers car rather than piloting an electrical appliance..
We enjoyed it too!

From what I watched and read elsewhere, the limiting factor is the roof. The ST fits taller people

Yeah I thought the same after driving the last 2 two Civic Type-R’s
Definitely a high smiles per miles and smiles per gallon car.
It’s certainly is!
Nice vid 👌 sod electric cars
Thanks for watching!

We’d recommend literally any BMW for the thickest steering wheels in the world

Nice vid guys. How was the body roll? I drove a 2018 model a few years back and it was horrific - I wonder if they’ve improved it at all?

why are you showing a soft top model on the road?
Because Mazda don’t have any footage of a red RF model
@@BuckleUpShow you don’t need to show stock footage. Your video would be even better without it.

We should have taken it down that green lane
Not sure Mazda would have appreciated that

All good fun and it has always been a great little car …. which is the problem for larger folk.
Just drive barefoot with the roof off always, you might get wet, but you'll be smiling
How tall are you guys?
Harry is 180cm and Rob is 188cm
I'm six foot tall and fits like a glove. I've got the Rf in machine gray the new face lifted one brilliant 👏 🙌 👌
Does the glove in question belong to a Mr Simpson?

At 6’1” I cant own one of these unless top down. Most enjoyable car to own imo
Yep and Rob at 6’2” really needed the top down
im 6ft and daily drive one, the trick is move the seat forward 2 notches and lean the seat back gives me plenty more head room
At 6 ft 5" I feel your pain

Reviewing a convertible while it's raining....genius😂
Weirdly, Mazda don't get to control the weather when they're organising press events. This is also the UK, so it happens quite a lot.
