To be fair, judging by the beta, it's quite buggy, and the free running has been neutered until you invest enough time into the game to unlock everything. And obviously the original game meant a lot to Dan, so I think it's fair to be a bit more critical. He wasn't talking out of his ass or anything.
Yeah, I love that song, no matter what I can always feel something in my heart when I hear that song. BUT EA IS ALL EA IS EVERYTHING BOW TO YOUR OVERLORDS
Here at DICE, we understand how important Mirrors Edge is to its loyal fanbase, so we wanted to flesh out the original game in a new way. We went to and talked to the players, and really listened to what they liked about the original game. We then took that input, hand-wrote it down on paper, held a meeting in our main room, put a little waste basket on the table, stuffed it with your precious input, and had an epic catalyst bonfire!
Mirrors Edge is really the type of game that benefits greatly by a small budget and scope. Stop. Making. Fucking. Everything. Huge. A big scope easily ruins focus on the good stuff.
LastAmerican6 I also don't think it's *too* bad but as Nerd3 said they basicly took the original and added a bunch of open world *stuff*. I like the idea of it being open world but I think the game shouldn't be about collecting a bunch of open world things...
again sadly most of the original devs in dicec are not involved in this game (Rhianna Pratchett on twitter Jan 2014) therefore it is as good as being made by a different team. It is essentially "The game is made by the same developer sure but not the same workers actually everyone who is working on the current one is completely new to this." Side note Catalyst is supposed to be delayed again.
Comparing this nerd3 plays to the original mirrors edge video, I genuinely felt bad for Dan. Just from the tone of his voice I could tell EA has ruined his favorite game. I remember in the original video he said that he really wanted an open world sequel. Sorry Dan.
+Connor Phelps I think this game could have fit his needs if it didn't have a progression system and didn't force combat, though whether it's just in the tutorial is yet to be seen. Personally I'm disappointed as well. I was looking forward to seeing this game being featured at SGDQ or the next AGDQ and it doesn't seem like it'll work. :/
"i dont really think mirrors edge would work open world" HOLD THE PHONE in your og plays of mirrors edge you said that you would like it to be open world? ah well its EA everyone changes their opinion on their fav game when EA decides to make another one
Man, Mirror's Edge was a fantastic experience. 10 years later, and those opening notes still send shivers down my spine. The art direction makes it pretty darn timeless, too.
@@No-hl4qm was worse then dying light in every way, which isn’t that bad, mirrors edge came out like, 8 years? Before dying light, but DL is far better for parkouring mechanics, although both games are beaten by catalyst easily
the finished game is way better than this beta, anyone saying ea ruined the game needs to play it before judging the whole game after seeing gameplay of the beta
I like how the chick you meet right after you leave Noah’s will threaten you with a very “foreshadow” vibe. Even tho she literally never once shows up again
+CreeperOnYourHouse The issues Dan is having are pretty rare from what I can gather. Saw a couple of people with a Titan X playing at Ultra settings with 100-120 fps.
You can hear the utter disappointment in his voice, that makes me sad...I'm still gonna get it and I hope I enjoy it...but I want so much for everyone to love this game and for it to be actually good
I just realised that if you see the I in their name as the Roman numeral I then add it to D (which is the fourth number) you get E, and if you minus the numbering of e - c or (5 - 3) then you get two, but then minus by one because you plused earlier then you get A... So that means THAT DICE BECOMES EA
What is it with upgrades in parkour mechanics? I hated this in Assassin's Creed and now Mirrors Edge suffers the same thing. Guys this is a poor and forced implementation of a RPG mechanic. It may seem like a form of freedom but it is not. It is chore, it is an unnecessary time consuming blockade.
I think it's not too bad of an idea and you have to improve and keep playing the game to be able to do what you liked in mirrors edge 1. As I was kinda shit at mirrors edge 1 once I finished the story I didn't play the game cause I couldn't do the time trials very well. So personally I think it could be a good idea as you'll have to kind of work towards the upgrades and fun element of the game.
+Ewe Tube Incorrect 12 x 2 = 24gb of ram. "In SLI each card must store all of the data it needs to work with, and must store its rendered frame prior to transmission. If card A when running by itself is using 1.5GB of 2GB of VRAM in a specific game, then you add a second card B and keep the game at the same settings, card A will be using 1.5GB of VRAM its own still, card B will also be using 1.5GB of its own VRAM. Most of the data on the cards will be the same, they both need to have the textures they are dealing with loaded into their VRAM. In short, SLI/CF does not increase the *EFFECTIVE* available VRAM, it only increases computational power."
We're on the same page Dan, Mirror's edge was my introduction to pc gaming (what a start) So when I heard they were making a sequel/reboot or whatever the fuck this is, It was a rollercoaster of emotions.
He's allowed to change his opinion but like... yeah it's funny that he spent the Mirror's Edge video drooling over the prospect of an open world mirror's edge and then started the open world mirror's edge video with "I just think open world wouldn't really work"
Honestly, you shouldn't have to UNLOCK abilities in a game like this, you should just LEARN them as the player. And combat in a running game like this should NEVER be mandatory.
If the game launches in a month.. im so fucking scared.. it didnt look fun at all. The running effect was crap, every interaction between your character and the world was shittier than the original.. In the original it was so real people got vertigo
***** That would apply if it wasnt so obvious just from observation on how they changed the mechanics. The walking mechanics look like crap even compared to games like CoD and BF4. U cant just blanket a game and say nothing you see on screen can be judged until you play it. Everything Is super disappointing and no amount of a rumbling controller is going to change how the game actually plays
I don't understand, I too loved Mirror's Edge to bits, played through it too many times to count, and I've thoroughly enjoyed this Catalyst beta. They improved the running, the combat, the game isn't linear anymore, you can make custom time trials, it's pretty damn great. I'm going to go back to the Catlyst beta, because these time trials are kicking my ass *coil jumping intensifies*
+Kemando i loved this beta as well, and i loved coil sliding. basically it's jumping,, coiling til you hit the ground and sliding. *coil jump on, good sir.*
Decaf Diamond okok, let me spell it out for you. The game (mirrors edge catalyst) is a very fun game (this means I liked it) and nerdcubed (the youtuber) is simply hating on the game (trying to find ways to dislike it).
+Justagermannerd dan doesn't care, he spends tens of thousands on stupid pcs, and people want to send him hundreds of thousands of pounds for his patreon lmao. money well spent lads. premium lego
I'm in love with it and it runs way above 60 for me almost all the time on a 980ti 16gb ram and a 8350 at ultra everything I wanted in a Mirrors Edge sequel
Small thing: If you SLI / CrossFire your graphics cards, you don't add up the VRAM. VRAM's basically copied onto both cards, it's not like one card pulls resources from the other card's VRAM.
I'm sorry but it really seems like they took out all of the realistic movement of Faith. What I mean by that is that the way she moves is quite poorly done, especially when she slides as she looks like she's performing a badly animated PS1 move and it really doesn't seem fluent - (I hope that makes sense?). Another thing I noticed was that when she wall runs it seems so unrealistic as well because when one performs a wall run, the momentum (And loss of momentum) causes an arc in the runner's path... Basically, she wall runs and doesn't move on the vertical plane AT ALL meaning that she runs perfectly straight WHEN SHE IS SIDEWAYS. My ranting may not make sense but at least this is easy to understand: Mirror's Edge (The original) was infinitely more realistic and fluent than Catalyst. I swear EA love ruining sequels (And re-boots alike), I'm looking at you THE SIMS 4.
+spuddie yea im pretty sure VRAM doesn't scale at all with a second graphics card, you just get the processing power (and not even all of that), not the VRAM
+Igmar Nagtegaal So the piss poor performance, the extreme amount of glitches, the weak upgrade system and a lack luster forced combat is all because of Dan? Yeah, fuck off, in its current state, the game is awful. The aesthetics are completely gone from the original. Seriously disappointing.
+Pulse Gamin This is the beta. Not the full game. They release a beta to fix mistakes and improve on what they have already made. Don't go quick to judgement until the full game is released.
You know what's missing? The tingly feeling you get even when you're just watching someone play it, most likely even more when you're playing it. I regret that I lost my disc to Mirror's Edge.
It's not even out yet guys Jesus Christ calm down. Beta is to fix bugs and performance issues. And the little changes might not be that bad Dan just hates on anything he can, and has very strong personal opinions. So yeah at least wait till launch to bash it.
+MrSeniorwaffles Combat is bad and shouldn't even be in the game Too many cutscenes UPGRADES!? (Who thought that was a good idea?) Have to do the missions EA's way and not do missions your own way You can't just say all the problems in the game aren't actually problems because "IT'S IN BETA GUYS!" If this was pre-alpha, I would think "Meh, seems okay, might want to change these things though."
I didnt say the upgrades and combat would change i said the performance issues would be fixed ( hopefully ). I said just because because its different doesnt mean its terrible.
+[HSC]Battleboy43 Technically with DX12 it will be possible to use all 24GB, IIRC, but still, even 12GB of VRAM is excessive, and no game should be struggling to maintain 60 with dual Titans Xs at high, let alone fricking medium.
NotActuallyBFG I'm just saying that VRAM doesn't currently work that way. Dan doesn't have DX12 now does he? Nope. The game's just trying to tell you "DO NOT PLAY ME."
[HSC]Battleboy43 I thought that ME:Catalyst was going to have DX12 support, but now that I think about it I'm not sure. And, yeah, Dan doesn't use Windows 10 so either way he can't have DX12. Was just pointing it out to you in case you weren't aware of it in DX12. Didn't intend to sound like I was putting you down or anything.
+Motör Punx It does but it's kind of like oh hey here's a sunrise and I'm free! I just got out of jail! whereas the original is more "man I LOVE running!" yeah yeah I'm sure the birds are real impressed
NerdCubed was far too nitpicky in this video. Half of the video was him in tutorial missions and he's moaning that he can't kick people off buildings during the tutorial even though it explicitly says to kick them into each other. I have absolutely no problem with someone having an opinion, but you know.
The original had freedom to decide how you approached the situation. They even said that was the focus for this game. If they made the topple thing or the other things optional it would be much better.
Dan in Mirror's Edge Catalyst: Especially when they say it's going to be open world, cause I don't think it'll do well in open world. Dan in original Mirror's Edge: I'm kinda disappointed that it's just these levels... I really hope there's a sequel that's open world, that'll be good. Sigh.
+minch333 +Decaf Diamond In the original one he said that he'd forgive EA for everything they had done if they made a second mirror's edge... I'm not hating or anything, I just think it's quite funny to be honest. And I didn't know that he changed his mind...
+The English Sounding Scot Yeah, I'm happy his game exists at all, and the fact that it's really good (at least from my own opinion...?) just adds to that
They done gone done fucked it up. Who thought momentum was not necessary. Why are there so many cutscenes, mirrors edge should be free flowing and fluid not constantly stopping.
i totally agree that the beautiful aesthetics from the original are almost totally missing from catalyst. extremely disappointing. although the sound/music is still on point.
+ikbenmaaten he's got his GPU's set up as SLI and if it's not made compatible well by the developers, even with new updates it can chug like a pig in mud... Damn shitty developers... game looks beautiful though.
Captain Woof yeah that could be the problem, but not many people have an SLI setup like that and it probably costs a lot of time and resources to optimize it. hopefully directX 12 will fix these problems.
ikbenmaaten True... but there's a difference between optimisation and making it run waaaaay worse in SLI than it would if you only ran one Titan X. Even just putting in the code "Disable second GPU" would be more optimised than this. XD
I have to say that as depressing it was to see the game be at this place so close to release, the sound of Dan's soul escaping from his body in ultimate sorrow was way more tragic.
Thanks EA, for shattering our fucking hopes and dreams AGAIN. The only decent sequel that EA have ever produced is Mass Effect 2, but you know what? I'm going to go all conspiracy theorist on it and say that they let ME2 be better just so everyones hearts were even more broken by ME3. And yet still I hold out hope for Mass Effect Andromeda even though I know it can only disappoint me. Jeez, is it just me, or is this like we're in an abusive relationship with EA at this point? I suppose on the bright side, they've yet to produce a fuck up on the level of the Star Wars prequel trilogy. Oh shit I just jinxed it!
I can't even bring myself to play the Mass Effect series because of the various console-exclusive or limited-time items they produced. I'll buy console-exclusive games every now and then but if I buy a PC game I expect it to have the same content as the console version.

I also noticed that the arms look more like really long tentacles than actual arms.
SLI doesn't mean you have 24gb of vram.
+spuddie yea im pretty sure VRAM doesn't scale at all with a second graphics card, you just get the processing power (and not even all of that), not the VRAM
Anyone one the patreon stream now?
+Jontheawsome92 Yep!
Yup
I the patreon stream now
+Jontheawsome92 ?
This releases in a MONTH!? They have a lot of tidying up to do.
not really
Benjamin Asbury Thanks for the well thought out response.
Benjamin Asbury Thanks, for real this time! Gives me a much better picture than what I've seen so far.
NoGround yeah, no problem
Hey Dan, can we get a no edits playthrough of the original? Just for old times sake.
You never fail to amuse me Dan
Who else always gets goosebumps when Faith's legs connect with the crane in the original?
Something about the original's title card just makes me happy :) It's just so simple, yet really damn effective.
good god my heart... incredibly sad now.
+Igmar Nagtegaal Agreed. Loved the beta
***** I find it kind of funny, how it's even further in the future - one could say the original game's time period is what we've just reached IRL!
+Pulse Gamin This is the beta. Not the full game. They release a beta to fix mistakes and improve on what they have already made. Don't go quick to judgement until the full game is released.
+John Tembreull Have you actually played it? Or are you just trying to be cool by saying its bad
+MrSeniorwaffles
Combat is bad and shouldn't even be in the game
Too many cutscenes
UPGRADES!? (Who thought that was a good idea?)
Have to do the missions EA's way and not do missions your own way
You can't just say all the problems in the game aren't actually problems because "IT'S IN BETA GUYS!" If this was pre-alpha, I would think "Meh, seems okay, might want to change these things though."
I didnt say the upgrades and combat would change i said the performance issues would be fixed ( hopefully ). I said just because because its different doesnt mean its terrible.
that music at 9:40 is pretty beautiful though
+Brody Read yeah chills.
I think one person in the game says "people where so good that they could do courses blindfolded." I think he was referencing a certain person
1:19 That's not how VRAM works, Dan. You would still have 12Gb VRAM if you had four Titan Xs.
NotActuallyBFG I'm just saying that I know about DX12 and that Dan doesn't have Windows 10.
I think the Catalyst title card looks better than the original one. Mind you I love cyberpunk dystopias.
Can cyberpunk 2077 pls just come out alrdy.
+grace calis ugh I knooooooow
+Motör Punx It does but it's kind of like oh hey here's a sunrise and I'm free! I just got out of jail! whereas the original is more "man I LOVE running!" yeah yeah I'm sure the birds are real impressed
+Motör Punx Ah, there it is. no wonder you like it, it's a vision of the dystopian future destined for games.
Oliver Turner If theres neon and synth music who cares
It's funny, I watched where the Title card for Mirror's edge came on and thought, wow, I want to play that.
Then remembered I have....many times.
It looks good, but it does seem to lack that distinct Mirror's Edge feel.
I think you meant to say "It's got that Mirror's Edge feel, but the gameplay has been turned into garbage."
+Firewisplet yes, but no, it doesn't really feel like Mirror's Edge still
Meme Master 400 Faster Blaster I'm being very generous with the word "good"
I think I know what Dan's going to bitch about on the next podcats.
The bit where he guessed she'd be hiding underneath the scaffolding was great
24g of video ram? That's not how it works Dan. You only have the vram of one card, even in SLI, so you have 12
+AmericanRaven Thank you
Plus even if he had 24 GB VRAM that wouldn't improve the framerate
AmericanRaven well, to anyone that doesn't know all of the technical details, two graphics cards both with 12gb makes sense to add up to 24gb.
NerdCubed was far too nitpicky in this video. Half of the video was him in tutorial missions and he's moaning that he can't kick people off buildings during the tutorial even though it explicitly says to kick them into each other. I have absolutely no problem with someone having an opinion, but you know.
filppilp222 I can see your point and how people may have an issue with this, but I personally don't.
+Joeificationism Precisely
The original had freedom to decide how you approached the situation. They even said that was the focus for this game. If they made the topple thing or the other things optional it would be much better.
I died at 8:00 when he said "oh he's a power ranger as well"😂😂😂
I guess EAs rep of REMOVING things in the sequel is still going... *Cough* Sims 4 *Cough*
Sigh.
+The English Sounding Scot When a game says open-world, that's good. When EA says open-world, that's another story.
+minch333
+Decaf Diamond
In the original one he said that he'd forgive EA for everything they had done if they made a second mirror's edge... I'm not hating or anything, I just think it's quite funny to be honest. And I didn't know that he changed his mind...
+The English Sounding Scot Yeah, I'm happy his game exists at all, and the fact that it's really good (at least from my own opinion...?) just adds to that
21:04 wow what a nice random brightness change.
let's be honest, when it fully releases your STILL gonna buy it
they've completely forgotten about the old art style. Mirrors edge still looks good today because of it, this will look dated in 3 years.
I honestly thought that the title card for catalyst was glitched, then i realized there's an opera building and a building powered by wind
I've seen so many vids of this beta and it kinda seems like he is ruining it for himself.
But it's still hilarious all the bad shit that happened to him😂
They done gone done fucked it up. Who thought momentum was not necessary. Why are there so many cutscenes, mirrors edge should be free flowing and fluid not constantly stopping.
+Joseph Dipalo And enemies are everywhere. Also why are you forced to fight them ffs
Keegs90210 that’s your subjective opinion. How are they going to tell a story without stopping for a cutscene a few times?
The fall death affect is just like a dream where it ends just before you hit the ground
i totally agree that the beautiful aesthetics from the original are almost totally missing from catalyst. extremely disappointing. although the sound/music is still on point.
Didn't even give it a chance.
+Big Boss right?
+Ballistic Lizard Games co. Yes, he even said that he didn't even give it a chance.
"I went up like a lego set's price on ebay" XD
I was thinking about getting this until I played the original. I think I made the right decision.
13:11 Thats what happens when you try and make Americans use roundabouts
DAN if you don't like the health bar can't you turn it off in the hub/pause screen
Am I the only one that likes the combat?
Fifi Lonek nosey I think it's awesome
I was really hoping this game would be good. Mirror's Edge is one of my favourite games.
But EA's done it again. Thanks EA.
It's just a beta mate.. He's just being picky
+SolitaryHowl It IS good. I sank a whole day into this beta. Even the social play is good, which I did not expect at all.
The game is fantastic so far. I'd say don't lose faith, but that dead horse has already been brutally bludgeoned.
EA, Enormous Assholes.
+Rainbow Bunchie HA
if your reflection is only hair you are most likely a vampire wearing a wig
I think you didn't update your drivers, I run a gtx 970 and can run this game pretty well on high/ultra
+ikbenmaaten then it likely had an issue with SLI, he does this for a living, I'm sure he remembered to update his drivers
ikbenmaaten
True... but there's a difference between optimisation and making it run waaaaay worse in SLI than it would if you only ran one Titan X. Even just putting in the code "Disable second GPU" would be more optimised than this. XD
Captain Woof yeah, I still hope they will fix it after the beta, but I'm doubting it :/
Good job, EA. You ruined another series.
you are overreacting a bit m8
+Varga Dániel How the fuck is that overreacting!?
Sebastian Chantre I dont think its that bad tbh.
Anyone else go full chills when the Original mirrors edge title card played ???
Well then, I think we all know what's going to be in the top spot in Dan's poop games of 2016.
+Toby Wan That'll probably go to RCT:W though, but this could be a good second...
+Toby Wan It's not that bad it's just disappointing. If anything he should make Dan's Disapproved games of 2016 just so he can but it on there
+FanPica NEVER MENTION THAT GAME AGAIN
+MUFFINMATT Yeah, but last year he did do a list of games that actually worked that were bad, so it could be on that one.
9:41
Wow, he literally judged something by it's cover.
Noooooooo!
Are you on your fucking period?
I can't even bring myself to play the Mass Effect series because of the various console-exclusive or limited-time items they produced. I'll buy console-exclusive games every now and then but if I buy a PC game I expect it to have the same content as the console version.
holy shit play the game for yourself this guy has a really biast approach on this game make your own opinion plus its still a beta not everything is gonna be perfect have your own opinion
