Catalyst isn't a bad game, it just became so much more than the original's vision and the creators struggled to live up to that. Also, open worlds harm far more games than they help, example being here. I'm sick of companies chasing "open world" as if it's the pinnacle of video games, it isn't and often times they sacrifice focus and mission design for large, vapid spaces devoid of substantially anything. Awful trend and I can't wait for it to go away. For every Witcher 3, there's 5 ME: Catalyst's. Bigger is rarely better in video games.
Why do people keep pointing out to Witcher like it's a good Open World. Most of your time is spent walking and it's not fun. People should be pointing out games like Sunset Overdrive where it's fun jumping around from Point A to Point B.
Good idea. Maybe you should be the script author. Its not that hard right? Edit: But that "WE CANT STOP THE REFLECTION" after "I found a way to stop the reflection. For good".
They had Terry motherfucking Pratchett’s daughter write the first one, and didn’t even bother to let her know they were making Catalyst. It’s why I’m always going to be pretty cold towards it; and the post-apocalyptic setting too, since that wasn’t really necessary.
I actually ordered the game recently and i love it. Its a very interesting story along with the whole parkour traveling is different in a good way. The music is so futuristic & the characters is alright. I haven't beat it yet but im enjoying the game so.much I 'm in no rush to beat the game.
why are your videos so good? I've actually never watched a video of yours that felt like it was made just to add content to the channel. All your videos seem like they take a lot of time to make. the writing of the script, the editing, and just the cleanness of your videos are all well done. So thank you.
Man this game just gives your this chill vibe that no other game can give, from the bright nights and its neon colour scheme to the smooth cloudy sunrays in the morning time period, this games play on colour makes for a nostalgic feel, I remember faintly playing the original version of this game as a kid being frustrated by the fact that how brutally hard the game was for me (Keep in mind I was still very young and inexperienced), now with the changes that the game has made in the course or 8 years I believe this game is a masterpiece for its time thus i will be very disappointed if there wasn't a 3rd instalment to this franchise
I finished this game a about a month ago and i think its one of the most beautiful game ever made , i couldn't play it i was just staring on the view and what a beautiful view and city they made with realistic detail especially with hyper setting on 1080p , the view and the beautiful sound brought tears to my eyes i mean laterally may be because of nostalgia of the first beautiful game since 8 years . there are very few games can reach the expectation and almost all new games have flaw but still this game was one of the most beautiful game ever made .
i loooooove this game, it's so beautiful and i love how you feel like you are Faith when she's running. Everything you said is true though, i dont even know if i bothered upgrading everything in the skill tree like i usually would.
Yeah, same here!! When I saw the title and the 12 min run time I laughed out loud. Committing to doing a deep-dive on E.T. was hilarious, a throwaway gag is less funny. Less work, but less funny.
Teletran Gamer Yeah, I had it figured for a joke already, but I would love to see an actual video on it. The game that killed and industry- it's something worth study.
You are actually the first and only person who summed up my thoughts on this game well. Thank you so much for getting the concept of the gameplay, and seeing how genuinely fantastic it is, and then how swamped down it becomes by every other aspect. It's as you said: each part of the game was made in total isolation of the others.
Good video. Although, I didn't have much issue with the open world (much prefer to the linear style of the original), upgrades (easily attainable and geared towards new players), or collectibles (not essential, skippable, fun to collect imo, and I see no issue with stopping for 2-3 seconds), but that scene where Faith breaks down is absolutely horrible. Totally disconnected me from Faith and seemed extremely contrary to her own character. Like seriously? You infiltrate a secret underground mind control facility, get out alive, then just give up? When you have a way to win? You explained it perfectly. Overall, I loved the game and thought it was a good improvement from the last game. Wish it could've done better.
Last year I played Catalyst again and I knew the story wasn't the big deal, but man, I feel in love with the art direction, every new zone I unlocked was more beautiful than the last, and the music perfectly accompained every moment, but it's true that the game lacks a lot important points that could have made it a greater experience, very interesting video
This is actually one of the most creative games i have ever played. in my 30 years of gaming, ive never played a game with such a world... and this soundtrack. it wasnt the best game ever, but the world was something beautiful. cant really explain it!
Very thorough analysis! One thing that always bothered me about ME was the fact that this game was built as a 3d platformer (linear, speed based) but sold as a freeform exploration. The strongest aspect of gameplay in this game for me is achieving perfection in a known route, since exploration loses it's draw once it's done once.
I have always felt that Dying Light mechanically succeeded where Mirror's Edge failed. It isn't perfect, but it interlaced narrative and gameplay in a much stronger manner, and felt much more deliberate than Mirror's Edge did before it. Thoughts?
intrusted I haven’t given Dying Light a try, but I wouldn’t think of it to be a game that would be relaxing, Mirrors Edge is calming to look at with its bright poppy white and yellow/blue/red color pallets and simplistic ambient music. What ways is Dying Light relaxing?
Summed up my thoughts exactly! The gridnodes were so much fun to traverse I always got super excited to play one...and realised I hadnt been doing the same with the rest of the missions.
Amazing video! I remember playing it a couple months ago and half way through the story thinking to my self that it was so weird that none of the plotlines or the universe were established in the original game, i guess that the gameplay and visuals were enough to make me not mind most of the problems. By the way, the wall punching moments you referenced in the start of the vídeo, that one segment were you needed to climb a bunch of towers with the plataform thingys.... glad to see i wasn't the only one to feel that way.
I loved the first game and I'm so glad they continued the series, but my biggest gripe with Catalyst is the locations. The first one had rooftops, construction sites, a storm drain, parking garages, a boat, a training area for your enemies, and first-person cutscenes as well as 2D animated ones. Catalyst has... rooftops... more rooftops... rooftops of a rich neighborhood, one construction site... one building with an engaging interior... that's it. And mediocre 3rd person CG cutscenes that every game has. I'm glad it exists but it ripped out everything that made the first one great.
I wanna see him do Katamari Damacy. I want an in depth, gritty character analysis of the King Of All Cosmos and the moral implications of rolling an entire city into a ball to mask one's mistakes.
As someone who loves Mirror's Edge, I feel like most people have been a little harsh against it. You however did an amazing job at analyzing it, hitting on both its weak and strong points. Great job, you've earned yourself yet another subscriber!
Agreed especially the first one being bug-ridden and problematic. But you can't argue that CDPR raised the bar for RPGs with the Witcher 3. The amount of passion and hard work they poured into it, resulted in nailing everything right except the combat that I could understand why most people hated (myself I enjoyed a lot tho).
The game is beautiful in terms of visuals and the setting. This is why Catalyst is one of my favorite games, it's because I wanted a game where I could just relax and run around the city in a beautiful atmosphere with futuristic music in the background. I do agree when it comes to story, exploration, gameplay and etc, it lacks depth in all of these 3 elements. It's EA that's what you get from them. If Catalyst was developed by a company like Rockstar, Bethesda or CDPR, the game would've been a massive success. I still love the game simply because of the visuals, atmosphere and the setting. But, I do admit i'm disappointed because it lacked a lot of elements that could've been implemented in it. That was an honest and an unbiased review, nice work!
Chicken Foot Gaming It's not that it did movement better than Mirror's Edge, it's just that collecting stuff is much more fun and less intrusive there.
This is probably the best review of Catalyst I've seen. It's well written and Raycevick is clearly in love with the game's amazing movement mechanics, as any clever gamer should be. All in all I loved Catalyst only a little less than how much I loved Mirror's Edge (and I totally loved that game), but it's flaws are so self-evident they hurt. I still sometimes reinstall both games just to feel the sound of Faith shoes on gravel and concrete and the sheer exhilaration of a nearly missed jump.
Perfect description, that was pretty much exactly how I felt while playing. Especially the "snapping point". Only that the time trials didn't interest me at all ^^
The biggest misstep is not including the pursuit cops from the first one in some way, especially with the open world. I couldn't believe that the sentinel was the last enemy type.
I agree with a most of what you're saying, but Faith hugging her sister in the first Mirror's Edge is in fact a very strong moment for the player, since s/he's with her from a first-person perspective. Those two scenes created a huge emotional impact for me and thus one of the strongest connections I ever felt to a video game character. Game and story rarely came together as strongly as in those moments - an achievement I feel has been widely overlooked. Not just looking at another character, but instead touching* her/him is a tool used far too rarely in games. * And I'm not talking about handing or receiving resources/rewards/rocket launchers. :)
ME1 is fantastic and I still play it. MEC isn't as good. I get certain vibes and feelings walking around in ME1 that I've never had in any other game, even MEC. It's not even the story of ME1, but the tone, environment, and sounds with music.
Are you like, so lonely that you feel an emotional connection when a female video game character hugs your character in first person? I didn't give one shit about Faith's sister hugging her, since we only saw her like once or twice. I think you need help man
Holy crap. You said everything about this game that I've been trying to say! I found everything so accurate, like you were explaining my own thought process step by step to me. Amazing.
"They need to perfect before they progress" is such a good line to remember for any creator out there. It's so much better to work on small-scale projects with extreme polish than to churn out a huge-scale project that's an unpolished mess. Great review!
Mirrors Edge is one of the series that always had the potential to be in the hall of fame of all time gaming. The background story combined with its visuals could have made a turly amazing and unique experience in gaming. Of course additionally with its first person parcour mechanics. For me personally the story was improved in Catalyst over the first game but was so hard to follow because of so much exposition being cramped into it. With a focus on either Faith Sister or the Big Evil Corporation it would have gotten the focus necessary to engage with the Narrative. Both together made an ending that effectively did not impact either the characters or the world. All of them are where they were before. Both Games in the Series failed to show the world of Mirrors Edge in an interesting engaging way. In both games you never meet npcs other than plot characters or enemies. It is a similar mistake Fallout 76 made with taking away all the npcs. I really want to see an entry in the series that shifts the focus of the game on its first person mechanics and the story/world, while ignoring flashy extra tick boxes like having an open world and such.
I don’t know bro, because the backstory for the first game ("coming to a future near you!") feels disconnected to the backstory for the second game ("after the apocalypse and we rebuilt everything…").
@@curbyour____9506 The whole point of Mirror's Edge is that visuals are supposed to be simplistic and not overly detailed. ME:C tries to make itself feel like a detailed world in a place where Faith is supposed to run past everything. What made Mirror's Edge good is that it made everything look amazing when you ran through it, but not when you stopped.
Just finished the game and I agree. Bland characters and cliche storyline, but I still love it for the fun platforming and absolutely gorgeous visuals. For me, the reveal of the city of Glass was right up there with Rapture and the Capital Wasteland.
Mirrors Edge Catalyst has the be the most beautiful visually pleasing game I have ever played, shame that the story couldn't match the quality of the visuals.
I actually like this game, the parkour is extremely addictive to me, especially because regular consoles is running it at a solid smooth 60 fps, I've got almost 200 hours played on xbox one, it's almost relaxing just running through the city (at daytime)
I preordered this. :( I paid $65 for this. I like the game but it didn't live up to my expectations. Feels unfinished. But I'm still playing it to this day
KingLulzington you said how I feel perfectly. ME1 is in my top 5 favorite games of last gen so I was very hyped for this game and pre ordered it. I like it still but i felt disappointed once I finished it.
This is one of the best games in this Gen to me. It was totally underrated, nobody understood, that the open world concept really suited the game and worked for vanishing the menu stuff. It surpassed the first Mirrors Edge, made things better and played even better thanks to 60 fps
Just wanted to throw a tid bit in. The skill tree was added in to try and keep players around. When the first game came out the demo alone scared most players away because of the learning curb for the controls. Dice announced a while before the game came out that the unlocks to movement were a way to ease players into all the control mechanics.
You had me at wall punching rage. My wife thought I was having a seizure when I began to fall off those microvators 14 times. Too bad as it has Matrix moments and beautiful trance score and physics
Is there anyway you could review Stars Wars Republic Commando? I LOVE that game and I don't understand why there was never a sequel or why other games fail at the squad mechanic so badly? Btw good work and I love your videos!
Amazing game! Very Smooth and Flowy Parkour unlike Dying Light which has 95% less moves and animations, and feels as stiff as an cardboard, Bought MEC on both PC and PS4 and no regrets! If it only had Multiplayer! just imagine exploring the amazing open world with your buddies as the sun is setting!
Despite its' flaws (and you did a good job enumerating them) this was a such a refreshing game. The art style, music and mechanics made this an intoxicating game. I'm hoping for a 3rd installment.
I think Mirrors Edge Catalyst from a gameplay perspective was actually better than the original, and a big improvement in terms of movement and especially combat. But it came at a cost too great; soul. The original has a cult following because it was very unique; combining a monochromatic art style that emphasizes colors to contrast the world you inhabit, to the cutscenes which have an artstyle completely unique to that game. Catalyst felt like every other franchise that bit the dust; a remake that ripped the soul that made the original so great in favor of following trends. It’s a microcosm for the movie and game industry as a whole
Mirrors edge may have flaws but let's be honest, catalyst was one of the best games of 2016 in my opinion and the Original was probably one of the best games on the world. The final soundtrack of both of the games make me want to cry in joy.
I hate how people say “you don’t play mirrors edge for its story”. that’s complete bs in my opinion. Catalyst had the opportunity to have a well written and executed story that would’ve surpassed ME1, but they ended up dropping the ball on this one. I’m sorry but as beautiful and atmospheric this game is(which it really is) it isn’t enough for me keep me coming back and revisiting this game from time to time. I’ll still keep the game for my personal collection, but I will not replay that story again or collect all the worthless items in the map.
Honestly I have never given a rat's booty about story and characters being bad in an otherwise great game. I can get those things from books or movies. I want to play a GAME, and the exceptional controls, amazing sense of momentum and speed, and overall great setting and soundtrack make this one of my favorite games.
in my mind catalyst's movement is damn near perfect, yes there are a few hiccups in the sense that it can sometimes feel janky in places but in order to make a better game all dice need to do is create a compelling story doesn't have to be amazing just enough to keep the player in the loop if they completely disregard catalyst as if it weren't canon 80% of the fan base would like it continue the original. fix the level design. i get the fact that dice wanted to capitalize on open world, everyone did and it fits the game but the way they hid level triggers and made all of the missions in different areas that aren't accessible outside of mods doomed the open world, it just feels like its there to go to missions instead they could have made a better world with the missions populated inside of it.
I actually really enjoyed ME:C but I've got to agree. As much as I loved Faith, there were moments where I really didn't like her, didn't understand her, and didn't want to see her goals accomplished. Her sister being literally one of two other Asian characters in the entire setting? Not at all surprising. It's one of those cases where the diversity of the cast actually worked against them. They made sure to include diversity, which is wonderful, but they didn't have enough diverse characters to make it really make it a surprise, and the fact that Kate looked exactly like Faith, moved very much like her, etc? Made me think they were going to fake out the sister thing rather than actually DO it.
The first time I heard this was going to be an open-world game, my interest immediately plummeted. The most enjoyable part of the original Mirror's Edge, to me, were the well-designed "race tracks" with minor detours or shortcuts here and there for you to run through. The better you got, the quicker you were and the more of these detours and shortcuts you could take without stopping. That is something that I couldn't see happening in an open-world game because things like that only work that well when they have one well-defined entry and one exit. I don't understand why they felt the need to turn this into an open-world game filled with pointless "side-quests" (or, as it seems in this case, just collectibles). But, I guess, all the people whining about the original being too short got what they wanted...
But it still has that! It has an open world and all the story missions are linear and more well crafted than the original plus the mechanics make the original unplayable

Subi_fan Agreed
This is exactly correct
The Rose Experience Loved your comment.
Thanks!
Sounds like Mirror's Edge Catalyst became a victim of chasing industry trends...and DICE needs better writers. Seriously, it's not that hard.
Good idea. Maybe you should be the script author. Its not that hard right?
Edit: But that "WE CANT STOP THE REFLECTION" after "I found a way to stop the reflection. For good".
The writing team should've been replaced the minute they started using "chosen one" tropes for no clear reason.
No matter how good the story was, no one would care about it because everyone plays it for the game play
@@andrei.cr2 For a game like ME Catalyst, a good story gets ignored because of the gameplay, but a bad story detracts from it.

I loved this game so much, the world itself was what made it great for me.
I finished this game a about a month ago and i think its one of the most
beautiful game ever made , i couldn't play it i was just staring on the
view and what a beautiful view and city they made with realistic detail
especially with hyper setting on 1080p , the view and the beautiful
sound brought tears to my eyes i mean laterally may be because of
nostalgia of the first beautiful game since 8 years . there are very few games can reach the expectation and almost all new games have flaw but still this game was one of the most beautiful game ever made .
i loooooove this game, it's so beautiful and i love how you feel like you are Faith when she's running. Everything you said is true though, i dont even know if i bothered upgrading everything in the skill tree like i usually would.
I actually want to see an ET analysis done by you.
Yeah, same here!! When I saw the title and the 12 min run time I laughed out loud. Committing to doing a deep-dive on E.T. was hilarious, a throwaway gag is less funny.
Less work, but less funny.

You know, both Solar Fields and Mick Gordon worked on this game.
Young NAF neat.
Woah
Nice
Mick Gordon didn't make any music for this game, it was entirely Solar Fields.
You are thinking of Doom...
@@mitchh5596 He did work on music for one of the trailers, just not the game itself.
As many flaws and potential it has, I honestly still really enjoyed it
This is actually one of the most creative games i have ever played. in my 30 years of gaming, ive never played a game with such a world... and this soundtrack. it wasnt the best game ever, but the world was something beautiful. cant really explain it!
Mirror's Edge: Catalyst (Video) = Mirror's Edge PC (2009) Soundtrack (Credits)
Very thorough analysis! One thing that always bothered me about ME was the fact that this game was built as a 3d platformer (linear, speed based) but sold as a freeform exploration. The strongest aspect of gameplay in this game for me is achieving perfection in a known route, since exploration loses it's draw once it's done once.
I have always felt that Dying Light mechanically succeeded where Mirror's Edge failed. It isn't perfect, but it interlaced narrative and gameplay in a much stronger manner, and felt much more deliberate than Mirror's Edge did before it. Thoughts?
Drake Ford I’m dying light I felt as if I had more control
Mirrors Edge is more relaxing
Drake Ford yes
milkytoad in some ways dying light is more relaxing. In some ways Mirrors edge is more relaxing.
intrusted I haven’t given Dying Light a try, but I wouldn’t think of it to be a game that would be relaxing, Mirrors Edge is calming to look at with its bright poppy white and yellow/blue/red color pallets and simplistic ambient music. What ways is Dying Light relaxing?
Summed up my thoughts exactly! The gridnodes were so much fun to traverse I always got super excited to play one...and realised I hadnt been doing the same with the rest of the missions.
what just happen with that intro
and as always another awesome video
Rookie Degtyarev title you Fuck :d
april fools right.
The moment to moment gameplay of both mirror's edge games are what make me love them so much
plz do spec ops the line
Yes ! super underrated game
sam swagolicus barron-baker he really should do spec ops
I wanna see him do Katamari Damacy. I want an in depth, gritty character analysis of the King Of All Cosmos and the moral implications of rolling an entire city into a ball to mask one's mistakes.
Oh, this would definitely be something for next year! I never got the chance to play Katamari, it would be the perfect excuse.
Raycevick next year?!
As someone who loves Mirror's Edge, I feel like most people have been a little harsh against it. You however did an amazing job at analyzing it, hitting on both its weak and strong points. Great job, you've earned yourself yet another subscriber!
Ever think about doing the witcher series? That would be some dope content
this.
Zeke Braddock Yes pleaaaaase!
Wait wait wait. Saints Row 4 did movement and movement progress better then Mirror's Edge. Im dieing
Chicken Foot Gaming Movement? No. Movement progress and rewards for it? Yes.
ThePieManLikesPie that's what I ment. Not really the movement it slelf but the movement with progression in general.
Chicken Foot Gaming It's not that it did movement better than Mirror's Edge, it's just that collecting stuff is much more fun and less intrusive there.
Chicken Foot Gaming your comment wouldn't have gotten any likes without the mention of movement specifically. You said exactly what you meant.
You also bothered to edit your comment, without changing that part.

I didn't give a shit when she hugged her sister.
How though. It's just a random character you met ingame for the first time, lol. I didn't care at all.
Are you like, so lonely that you feel an emotional connection when a female video game character hugs your character in first person? I didn't give one shit about Faith's sister hugging her, since we only saw her like once or twice. I think you need help man

Raycevick's narration is very captivating. It draws you in.
"They need to perfect before they progress" is such a good line to remember for any creator out there. It's so much better to work on small-scale projects with extreme polish than to churn out a huge-scale project that's an unpolished mess. Great review!
Skip every cute scene and the game is 100% better.

Awww.... I really wanted to hear you tear into the debacle that was E.T. ^_^
I actually thought the visuals missed out on the beautiful simplicity of the first game.
If there's anything perfect about Catalyst it's the visuals

Welcome to AAA. :P
Just wanted to throw a tid bit in.
The skill tree was added in to try and keep players around.
When the first game came out the demo alone scared most players away because of the learning curb for the controls. Dice announced a while before the game came out that the unlocks to movement were a way to ease players into all the control mechanics.
Amazing work as always!

I knew it was too good to be true
Mirrors edge may have flaws but let's be honest, catalyst was one of the best games of 2016 in my opinion and the Original was probably one of the best games on the world.
The final soundtrack of both of the games make me want to cry in joy.
I cant say ME is one of the best video games in the world - but it is one of my favorites
The "say what" plot twist moment (in the spoiler section) had me spew out my coffee in laughter.
your voice is so god damn soothing
It's not text-to-speech?
Honestly I have never given a rat's booty about story and characters being bad in an otherwise great game. I can get those things from books or movies. I want to play a GAME, and the exceptional controls, amazing sense of momentum and speed, and overall great setting and soundtrack make this one of my favorite games.
Mirrors Edge Catalyst is slept on when it comes to visuals.
in my mind catalyst's movement is damn near perfect, yes there are a few hiccups in the sense that it can sometimes feel janky in places but in order to make a better game all dice need to do is create a compelling story doesn't have to be amazing just enough to keep the player in the loop if they completely disregard catalyst as if it weren't canon 80% of the fan base would like it continue the original. fix the level design. i get the fact that dice wanted to capitalize on open world, everyone did and it fits the game but the way they hid level triggers and made all of the missions in different areas that aren't accessible outside of mods doomed the open world, it just feels like its there to go to missions instead they could have made a better world with the missions populated inside of it.
I'm sorry but the original Mirror's Edge had a MUUUUUCH BETTER OST
The Shard is the best track on that OST
Solar Fields did both ME 1 and 2. But I liked 2 soundtrack better
You're not wrong.... :D I love both tho :3
It had a stronger title track, but not as good ambient, in-game music as Catalyst I think.
It had a much better everything
So glad to see that your channel is growing :) Keep up the good work!
