      i didn't know that but was excited when remote manipulation let me open doors on the other side. You just need pure line of sight. Also felt dumb after hearing someone say turning into small objects to get in places you couldn't reach. And tadah finally got past those bar doors. Tbh I never used the nerf gun much. And lastly when watching prey vids just cause, i coulda sworn someone used the qbeam to lower an enemy's health then finish it off with a pistol. (As if the qbeam can detonate from being shot at)

    Prey is indeed everything that lasts from the Immersive sims era of the late 90's/early 00's.. It is a pure masterpiece and the kind of game I was waiting for, for years.. Tho I'm so desapointed by its "commercial failure". Clever and hard games arent good for marketing.. I really hope this genre wont def die with this game.

    • @OmegaEnvych

      I feel the same. I never wanted to play Prey and did it only when my cousin told me that I really really should. I know how obnoxious he can be, so I decided to run through couple of locations, say that I've played it and that's it. And... well, I still think that Prey is one of the best games released in 2017 - year that had such games as Horizon Zero Dawn, Persona 5, Resident Evil 7, Zelda Breath of the Wild, Sonic Mania, Divinity: Original Sin 2, PC ports of Bayonetta and Vanquish, Nier: Automata and other games that I genuenly consider very good. I feel bad that for the most part it's considered as "Mediocre" or "Controversial" as it is a game that has great feel to it.

    • @erradate6425
      @erradate6425 6 лет назад +48

      Pretty much same for me. I had no interest at all in this game at first. I think its failure, like joseph anderson said, is due to the name Prey. Prey was a game that ppl were hyped for and've been delayed and then cancelled. If this game was called System Shock 2017 or Deus Thief Metal Shock idk, it would have succeed.
      Lets say its that "hidden gem" that only good players with great mindset knows about.

    • @EkkieEkk
      @EkkieEkk 6 лет назад +37

    • @jockturner1547
      @jockturner1547 4 года назад +46

      Man the final act is terrible. After spending almost 20 hours being slow methodical, and driven, it throws such rediculous odds at you, with respawning enemies with huge health bars that can track you down, forcing you to simply run back and forth the station and for what reason?
      The game could pretty much have done without the entire Dahl subplot and been the better for it.
      I don't mind the rush when the apex arrives, but for that to happen immediately after the Dahl situation was such an odd pacing decision.
      If Dahl arrived half way through the game, that would have been a better break of the pace without being too forced.
      Also why do you need to go to the powerplant to arm the self destruct, surely that should always been completely enacted in the bridge. A part of my decision to use the nullwave, excluding that I believed it was the right thing to do, was because I cbf heading down again just to head back up.
      Such a shame for this otherwise, masterpiece of game to end.

    • @JumalaPlays
      @JumalaPlays 4 года назад +2

      The ending was good, you knew it was coming right from the first 10 hours of the game, and you knew you drew closer and closer to it. Why would it need some extra twists and shit, twists are overused anyways so the biggest twist is no twist.
      It was the ending you were expecting all the time, and you got what you wanted and for the people that didn't have enough, there was the after credits scene which explained quite a bunch anyways so it was a good ending, just different

    • @jockturner1547
      @jockturner1547 4 года назад +6

      @@JumalaPlays no one mentioned that it needed any twists... We are talking about the fact that the 3rd act of the game feels to be at a far lower quality than the rest of the game. Forcing a style of gameplay that was discouraged for the whole game and the actual ending being extremely brief. Like you use the nullwave, it plays a extremely short Cutscene that just validates your choice and then the credits role.
      The addition of the twist of the simulation is slightly better in terms of acknowledging your choices, at the cost of making it feel like all the choices you actually made were for nothing. Not saying it's bad, I liked the ending, but that doesn't mean it was perfect.

      @@jockturner1547 to be fair, by the final arc you should have already explored all you needed/wanted or could, the military operators appearence kinda signal that the game is ending and you should wrap things up.

      @@Farowa45 IMO, that's not a good comparison. Besides both being first-person & being published by Bethesda, the two games couldn't be any further apart.
      While DOOM is a hardcore action "balls-to-wall" FPS, Prey 2016 is more akin to a non-linear action-horror game that just so happens to feature guns (think a mix between Bioshock and the more recent Deus Ex games) with heavy horror elements.
      Think about it like this gameplay-wise: in DOOM, its about ripping & tearing demons, while in Prey, its more about outsmarting the mimics.

I loved how open ended everything felt from combat to exploration (so many different secrets/shortcuts and fantastic use of verticality!!!) to completing many objectives. Pausing the game for hacking made one of my favorite moments on Prey happen, I was fighting a Technopath that was controlling two turrets and I couldn't seem to get rid of them, so I guided him into a room with a second floor, I jumped onto him and hacked both turrets before touching the floor, switched to the stun gun and stunlocked him as the turrets did the rest of the job.
    Bioshock did live hacking and it worked back then because flying turrets weren't really that deadly (and you could always instantly stun them with Electrobolt or the hacking gun), in this game things are a lot deadlier up close (in Hard) and later in the game they attack you in groups, so it makes sense that Prey would pause the game for the hacking minigames.

      The original planned sequel was tangentially connected to the first, but that connection was still there, in the case of the game that we got, the title just seemed like a cheap cash grab on Bethesda's part. Prey(2017) should've just been a new IP, but BS just assumed that if they took the name of a franchise they had lying around that had had a highly anticipated sequel before its sudden cancellation, they'd be able to recapture that old hype, instead the Prey we got suffered because the people it was implicitly marketed to were angry that it wasn't the sequel they had already been sold on. They wanted to piggyback on a legacy & got the worst possible outcome for their trouble

    Yeah I played through the game 3 times. 35 hours my first time. It's the most I've ever played a 7 out of 10 game. It's soooo good and special in many ways, but at the same time so flawed. I LOVE this better-than-average game for how spectacular it feels in it's second act. I hope to god that they make a big ambitious sequel. Something like Dead Space 2. A whole new unique world that in a part returns to Talos 1.

      Stache it's an improvement, especially disabling waypoints is great, but i wish there was an option or a mod to make UI elements fade in and out. Disabling the healthbar means you can never see it, not even while opening the weapon wheel, but leaving it on means it's there 100% of the time. It should just fade in when you get spotted by enimies etc

    Ray, you know how much I try to stay away from this game because of how hyped I was about the original Prey 2. You've convinced me to give it a shot, which is a massive achievement. Great job as always, buddy!
    However, I think the issue of standard game mechanics such as inventory screens and hacking are actually a necessary evil in games like this. While I fully understand the issue of immersion breaking due to having every other aspect of the game in real-time, I see it more as a break for the audience.
    Similar to the quieter moments in an action film or comedic relief in a horror film, the audience NEEDS a moment to catch their breath. If said player feels constantly on edge, which most probably do during their exploration of the station, then it loses its potential effectiveness. Having the screens break the immersion, even for a moment, allows the player to take a breather and focus on one task, instead of having ANOTHER thing to worry about. While that makes sense for a thriller/horror atmosphere, if the game has an enemy that can appear out of nowhere, then it was probably a conscious decision to let those moments freeze time for the players benefit.

Compared to the original prey 2 this is garbage, a shame, and a disgrace how this B-Game is spitting on such a legendary game with such a great universe and concept for the black goo and survival horror crap we see literally everywhere. My favorite aspect of Prey has to be how it accounts for such a wide variety of solutions to any and every problem you encounter, ensuring that everything down to the furniture in the room has multiple strategic uses depending on how you want to play. You can barricade doors, create strategic cover, throw them at enemies, turn them into scrap, use them to reach areas and save gloo, leverage larger objects, create pathways through electrified areas, or even assume their shape to hide amongst them or find creative ways past obstacles.

    You know, about that "full immersion", one company back in the 2008 (i guess, too lazy to goggle it) gave us the answer to the question of player involvement and that was Visceral with Dead Space. It was totally immersive and was easily believable cause all the menus did not stop time and did not disconected you from Isaac, and for a horror game that was a huge win. So if developers still want from players to be maximum involved in the process and that they could easily impersonate themselves with main character, there is no better example than Dead Space i think (sorry for English, not my native language, and great video, as usual)

    Hey, Raycevick! It's interesting that you mentioned Metro and The Witcher III, because those games are among the top 10/20 best games I've ever played, including the new Prey game (by the way I also played the original). I think the new Prey is a fucking masterpiece. I disagree with this statement though: "the brilliance overstays it's welcome". I would have loved to play the game more, it was so damn good (I completed it to basically 100% after roughly 30 hours). I never had the problem you mentioned with Alien: Isolation either. I have to disagree about the third act.
    Yes, you are running back and forth through the ship but it's pretty neat when you have memorised those areas and know shortcuts and have invested in mobility. Kind of feels like coming back to an old area in a Metroidvania.
    But the main point is that I found many very important voicelogs and files in the last third of the game. I found Morgans psychological evaluation in that part. All the information I found there allowed me to really put the events that happened in order and figure out the timeline so the story/worldbuilding felt the strongest towards the end.
    I figured out where January and Alex stand which is an aspect that makes the third act a bit weaker because the mystery was a big part that made the first two acts so strong, but there were still loose ends like the records that you can find on some kind of disaster that persumably happened on earth, Sarahs psychological evaluation and the visions you have while in coral. Those loose ends kept me invested in the story and caused the ending to have a big impact.

      Raycevick I believe the lack of overlap stems to how much people loved Dishonored. The people who loved Dishonored really loved Dishonored. Likely because the people who had just enough interest to get to push through the first few missions (the worst missions) were also the people who were able to get to the amazing part of Dishonored. Not that some people didn't like Dishonored or don't fit into those categories just that most of the people I observed seemed to be like that. Anyways those people had such high expectations after the original Dishonored that they felt like PREY 2O17 had to be amazing but those who weren't able to push through the first little bit of the game had low expectations.

      I was noticing a weird stutter (or _something_ at least), but it was only noticeable when there was player movement in certain areas. Clips in the greenhouse area that has your character's brother's office/living quarters had the most noticeable amounts of the weird stutter, of what I'm referring to at least, since you could see it even when the player char was walking (especially noticeable at 2:48) from what I was noticing at least, since it's in almost just about every clip inside the station and possibly outside of it).
      I could be talking about something entirely unspecific to what you're talking about also (since I noticed a "weird stutter" as opposed to "lag"), or we're using different terms to talk about the same thing, but it does look like there's "lag of some kind" at least.

      It could be something to do with the Occlusion Culling, I think I remember Prey 2017 getting a patch, or part of one, to fix it awhile back during it's first or second month after release so maybe needs to be tweaked/relooked at a little more if anything (some people had reported the entire space station or large portions of it became technically loaded into memory despite being in said station and it significantly impacting performance in certain areas of the game).

    I will never forget my personal all -time favorite story related to this game. It was a late-game mission that had given me the objective to move some turrets from one place to the next, and I was supposed to grab some turrets from behind a door, but, when i'd first seen the turrets, I instead turned them into materials with the grenade. So I was shit out of luck and turrets. In order to complete my objective I had to sit around for an hour or so stacking boxes leading up to a suspended walkway just so that i could get some turrets. Never have I had an experience of a game that was as free as this. It's been pretty hard to find it nowadays, when most games confine you to a way to beat something the way the devs thought was best for the player.

      Joe Cucuzza The story? Lack of NG+? Most likely the fact Dishonored, even while offering a lot of freedom on how to approach situations, al the targets still have a binary way to approach them. Lethal or not. Even the story, at its core, is just so-so, even if the world building is brilliant. Prey is a lot more open ended, with more variety, more endings, more ways to approach scenarios, even better world building IMO and a better story as well.

    I'm kind of on the opposite side of things with you. Dishonored grabbed me in a big way and Prey kinda left me ambivalent. A lot of it is what you described. The game drags on and on. Plus the lack of enemy variety and odd character dialogue/animation hurt the experience. Like the old Looking Glass studio characters. Except that was because of technical limitations, so what's Arkane's excuse? I don't know. Arkhane hasn't really made a game I truly love so far, but they're a developer who consistently make good stuff. I hope they can finally hit their stride and make something truly wonderful. They've clearly got the potential

    • @Ciber2k
      @Ciber2k 6 лет назад

      Well, while it's true that obviously Arkane has better tech than Looking Glass to make more realistic characters, nowadays there is no way to make an in-game NPC feel real, so the problem, despite being reduced, will still be the same. You can only make this possible in Cutscenes if you have Naughty Dog's budget.

      I disagree that npc realism is contingent upon fully fledged cgi cutscenes (naughty dog). Witcher 3's dialogue feels fantastic, getting mentally and emotionally involved with an npc happens pretty naturally (in my opinion). But some might argue those are cutscenes too. Even so, I think it's safe to say people are satisfied with what Bethesda did with skyrim and fallout in regards to player to non-player dialogue, and those are anything but fully fledged cutscenes

    I kind of had a lot of problems with this game. It's quite good at the beginning when every monster seems scary and dangerous but that changed quickly. The monsters quickly lost their "scariness" and the traveling just started to feel like a chore and quick enough the whole game started to feel like a chore. Saying that pray doesn't need good shooting mechanics is like having a driving game where the cars are horrible to drive but the scenery is great. Oh and the upgrade system. Why is it that every game now has to have an upgrade system? For me they take attention away from the game itself and turns it into a searching simulator. Btw, the music was annoying af. It just got old so quickly. It never stops. There isn't a quiet moment as far as I can remember. There is always something playing in the background and it was way too much for me.

    i played prey. it was pretty fun, but imo the fact that enemies just respawn when you leave and reenter an area kinda sucks. i spent a ridiculous amount of time gathering everything slightly useful in the lobby and piling it in the office, and had all 3 turrets watching the door.
    then i came back after leaving the office and found a mimic just sitting there between two of the turrets.
    also, if you leave and immediately go back into a level, the enemies would have respawned. there is no delay between enemy spawns, which is doubly annoying. once you figure that out, going back to previously visited areas isnt that worth it anymore. supplies dont respawn so if you do go back its best to just run past everything.
    also the ending didnt surprise me in the least. dont remember what tipped me off, but i was dead sure about halfway into the game there would be a twist and that twist would be that i was a typhon myself.

    • @kabeltelevizio
      @kabeltelevizio 5 лет назад +8

      This is not exactly true. Enemies respawn sometimes, but usually it takes time. Although it is a bit randomized. Initially I disliked this, but later, when my character was more powerful, it was good, since if there were no aliens, what kind of challenge would there be?

    • @poutine_machine
      @poutine_machine 5 лет назад +4

      i think they respawn after some time or after some sort of mission completed objective. The waypoint system is buggy so it forced me to backtrack through the lobby multiple times and it was empty until I completed a few objectives elsewhere.

    I love this game. Too many games rely on multiplayer and have either a very short single player campaign or none at all.
    I'll agree on criticisms of the nightmare mechanic. There could probably be a more diverse number if enemies as well. I've played through it twice and feel like the length comes down to decisions. Finding story bits in logs and terminals can feel a bit old, but I never really felt bored even going back to old locations.
    The one thing that bugged me was that the illusion/alt reality mechanic at the beginning wasn't really used after the first location. Overall it's the best game I've played in years though.

  • @Arch-Tau
    @Arch-Tau 6 лет назад +6

    I disagree with your comment on the length - I absolutely loved the game and every new area to explore was more than a treat - it was more like a full-on feast. The only thing I didn't like was the strutcturing of the quests. The game didn't trust me enough to enjoy it on my own and instead decided that sending me on these riduculous fetch quests was the best way of makiing me explore, as though I didn't have enough incentive already. In a way I wish some areas, like the Bridge had been more fleshed out just to give me more exploration value.

    When I spent a minute whacking away at a chair that's spinning in place ,thinking it's a mimic , and learning that it's a actually game glitch, I should have known what the game had in story for me. On the whole, every aspect from level design (14 ways into a room does not equal level interconnectedness), fighting and stealth mechanics (the first unsatisfying, the second completely ineffective) and story (sidequests are rendered moot when you are on a ticking clock to blow up the ship anyway) varied in experience from unsatisfying to annoying. And don't get me started on the "Nightmare" which is defeated by going into a small room.

    The thing about Dishonored is that it isn't great until a little later into the game. I beg anyone who comes across this comment who stopped playing before or during mission 3 to just go a little further as I believe you will find a game that will rival some of the best games you have ever played.

      Steve Larry A great deal of people who play Dishonored think they are at a higher level then they are. Here what some people think vs what it actually is.
      What people think:
      Mission 1: Returning Home (Mission 1)
      Mission 2: Coldridge Prison (Mission 2)
      Mission 3: Dunwall Sewers (Mission 2)
      Mission 4: Arriving At The Hound Pits Pub (Mission 2)
      Mission 5: Distillery District 1 (Mission 3)
      Mission 6: The Overseer's Office (Mission 3)
      At this point the people who don't realize how early they are in the game usually stop.
      Here is how it actually is:
      Mission 1: Returning Home (When you are framed for the murder)
      Mission 2: Dishonored (From when you wake up in coldrigde to when you wake up in the hound pits)
      Mission 3: The High Overseer (From when you wake up to when you wake up next, you also go to the distillery district on the way there.)
      Mission 4: The House Of Pleasure (From when you wake up to when you go to sleep, you also go to a distinctive brothel and again are forced to go through the distillery district.)
      As for the rest of the ten missions featured in dishonored well... I don't want to spoil them. So yeah he probably should.

    I saw you using the 'Huntress Boltcaster' to lure the zero-g exploders away. 😁 I felt like a genius when I thought of that strategy. I had so much fun in this game exploring anything and everything. There would be obstacles that seemed to require a strength upgrade to lift the objects, but then I said "F**k that!" and I used the force of explosives to move them out of my way. If there were a door that I couldn't unlock, I'd check for windows and morph into coffee cups to simply slide through their bars, like that room at 3:28

      I had the same reaction when playing the game, got about 5 hours in, but I was never invested one bit. Haven't finished it to this day.
      For me, one thing that I dislike is when the game punishes you for using lethal kills by giving you a bad ending.

    • @primeobjective7186
      @primeobjective7186 6 лет назад +1

      William S Interesting. The game only seems to pick up pace once you get to Kaldwin's Bridge. But about your lethal vs non lethal comment I have to say I agree with you there. But I heavily recommend just trying to push through those first three missions because once you do you will find an incredibly deep game that will just improve from there. But I also recommend turning off the objective markers.

    • @NSFSponsor

      William S Thematically, killing everyone doesn't make sense for Corvo. A lot of the guards and henchman are just following orders. Corvo isn't supposed to be a bloodthirsty killer.
      Besides, playing it non lethally is far more reqarding knowing you manuevered around a heavily armed fortress without having to kill or even harm anyone in general.
      My main problem is that unlike Deus Ex, System Shock, etc. The game's stealth just isn't that fleshed out. It's so rudimentary and not that fun. The combat is incredibly fun so you want to play lethal.

    • @SgtZaqq
      @SgtZaqq 6 лет назад +1

      The stealth in Deus Ex and System Shock is hardly more advanced than in Dishonored.
