      @@Codoxnz I agree. 1 & 3 were thrillers where you sit on the end of the seat, nervous of what to come and how the protagonists will ever survive their trials.
      For me all 3 fits thematically together. 1 is the discovery of the race and the fight to survive, 2 shows how bad it can get if they are allowed to multiply, and 3 is Ripley knowing wth is up and fighting back. Love it.

      He doesn’t just copy and paste facts, he goes to great lengths to find out obscure but interesting stuff. It shows he has a massive passion for movies, really funny and energetic but when the situation deserves it you can hear the respect in his writing and delivery. I’m familiar with so much of what he covers but he always find new facts and anecdotes. What always spring to mind is his Jaws episode where he essentially said ‘He knew this story was common knowledge but it was so important that he couldn’t leave it out’ it’s a great sentiment and shows there is a balance to everything.

    I have a story about this from my childhood that I'll never forget.
    When I was about 10, there was a girl at school that was known for her family's love of dogs, and her mum would pick her up from school with some funny looking greyhound things. One day the girl told us that her dog was going to be in the new Alien film playing the alien, and of course, no one believed her because movies were made in Hollywood, a dog couldn't play an alien, and kids at that age like to tell tall tales. So, a few days or weeks later, the girl came in with a photo of her dog in an alien suit on a movie set, with her mum handling the dog. Our little minds were blown!
    Now knowing the full story, I feel bad for her because her dog probably only ever did a screen test and never made it to the final film. It's a good thing she had that photo.

    Absolutely love this film. The Assembly Cut ironically puts a lot of the original issues right (for example, it actually shows how all the characters die rather than just disappearing half way through the film like in the theatrical version) with a proper cut that makes sense, updated picture and resolved sound issues. It's a real tragedy that the Assembly Cut wasn't the one that was shown for the theatrical release back in the day. The cast is incredible with Ralph Brown, Brian Glover, Charles Dance and Charles S Dutton. What a line-up!
    If you can get your hands on the Assembly Cut (found in the most recent blu ray Alien box set) the film is definitely worth a revisit and deserves more credit on its own merits than it usually gets.

    • @darkwoods1954
      @darkwoods1954 2 года назад +5

      I like the middle of the Assembly cut but the beginning and ending of the theatrical. Ripleys sacrifice was ruined in the assembly cut with that awful jittery slow mo. An Alien coming out of a dead cow also isn't anywhere near as effective as coming out of a living dog. Most of us love dogs so it's more gut wrenching seeing one die. Dogs are more vicious than cows so makes the Alien seem so too. But themiddle of the Assembly is better as it actually shows what happens to all the characters.

    Honestly, as dark and depressing Alien 3 is, I actually really enjoy this movie. I respect it’s bold move to take the Alien saga into a new direction to create sympathy for the characters. After all, it’s about a monster running around killing people. You shouldn’t be cheering to see them get killed, you should be feeling sorry for them. Both Alien and Aliens stand as their own films, and Alien 3 should as well.
    I especially love the music score of this movie. It fits the tone of it perfectly in my opinion. Movies like this shouldn’t be trashed on, they should be appreciated and respected on what it took to make and what it was created into.

      I loved the original concept. A single alien among unarmed individuals was returning to the horror and not going the action movie direction. The star of the movie isn’t the alien itself, it’s the tension or fear it creates. Being trapped with no way to defend yourself leaves limitless possibilities. That’s probably why the famous “Alien Isolation” game was based on similar principles. Not only that, they literally had the perfect substitute director for that subject matter- David Fincher. The problem is this is what happens when greedy studio executives come in and make all decisions from a financial standpoint. The end product is kind of a mess imo. There were a couple of genuine situations of palpable tension and fear, but everything else was a hot mess.

    I was a child when I watched this movie and the fact that even children wasn’t spared now made me feel even more despair. That probably wasn’t the best thing psychologically, in hindsight, but it made me feel something and I liked this movie a lot because of it - in comparison to many other movies today where evoking emotions are simply left out.
    This also was the early 90’s and it reflects the alley that movies went into, pushing the limits of darkness and violence to its limits. It just being Ripley once again became a bit repetitive. But never have I felt those explorative feelings of such violence in movies since,..

    @Minty Comedic Arts:
    FUN FACT: Since David Twohy wrote one of the scripts for "Alien 3", that was later rejected, 20th Century Fox years later (around 2000 maybe) once tried to inquire his availability to write AND direct the first "Alien vs. Predator". But sadly, despite his big interest in the project, he was forced to turn it down due to scheduling conflicts.
    Not to mention, i've also talked with Twohy directly about this and he even thought it would've been pretty cool idea after mentioning writing a script that took elements from his old "Alien 3" draft, and borrowed elements from Peter Briggs' old 1991 AVP spec-script that's floating around on the internet.

With the xenomorphs, Weyland-Yutani and the world structure the films getting more depressing was the most natural thig to happen, naturally ending with Earth being turned into uninhabited wasteland at the end of Alien 4. What sucked though is Alien: Covenant, as it just doesn't work on so many levels. The Prometheus was OK, and it gave us this hope of finding out more about the Engineers, but what we got instead was David's story of making better xenomorphs, which just felt stupid and ill-concieved.

    I enjoy the Assembly Cut of Alien 3 and also wish we could have seen the movie as FIncher actually envisioned it, rather than with all the studio tampering.
    The thing that I liked about it, beside the iconic shots of the Alien and Ripley and Ripley falling into the lava is the work the steadicam operator did on creating the Alien's perspective shots. I always thought it was a really cool idea to put the audience into the Alien's viewpoint.

    Absolutely deserves to be held in the same esteem as the first two. It returns to the theme of a single alien against humans armed only with intelligence. The situation of a colony of male criminals atoning for their pasts in a monastic culture suddenly presented with the twin evils of a lethal monster and a female creates a tension that is always present. Sigourney is excellent and despite being the lead, defers to the several Shakespearian actors in the mostly-British cast. Charles Dance and Brian Glover being the stand-outs. The 'Alien's-eye' footage was both a technical marvel for its day and a clever theatrical technique to generate some understanding and even sympathy for a creature fighting for its life just as much as the humans were.
    EDIT: I realised I had the special edition on my DVD that I had never watched. I prefered the theatre version.

    My take on it: James Cameron had brilliance with Aliens and T2, by far two of the best sci-fi action sequels ever made. Alien 3 was a big androgynous step backwards, even when the action did kick in a bit in Alien 3, the odd 144mm wide-pan shots of the "alien view while running" was odd and didn't really add anything. The practical effects, characters, plot, and action sequences of Aliens was far superb to any other film in the entire franchise. Not to mention that Sigourney Weaver's role in Aliens was very badass, whereas in Alien 3 there's more yin/yang going on between the prisoners and her walking on eggshells half the time, a weird tension that sets too deep and steals time away from what could have been better action sequences. My opinion, they should have either went with the "Aliens made it to Earth" plot, or just stopped the series with Aliens.

    This is one of my favorite dark movies. I am a huge fan of the alien franchise. This movie has helped me get through some tough times in my life. Because when I watch it, I always think it could be worse. I could be stuck on this planet with an alien running around trying to kill everyone. The fact that Hicks and Newt were killed off sets the stage for the tone of this movie. I love it because it is not a typical Hollywood, (hero wins in the end) movie. It’s much deeper than that. I think the art direction and music score is spot on for the story.

I get why some people don't like it or even hate it, but killing off most of the main characters from Aliens in the movie's opening really helped set the hopeless, depressing tone of the rest of the movie. What I hate about the hate on ALIEN 3, is that people talk about "the happy ending of ALIENS", "The family Dynamic of ALIENS", "That Ripley finally had a daughter to define her", "That ALIEN 3 is depressing, dark, gloomy, etc..." and then I argue back that the ALIEN franchise was created under the inspiration of H.P. Lovecraft's nihilistic writings, and H.R. Giger's dark, sensual and disturbing artwork.
    It is stupid to complain about a story that is in essence with its own premise which were on the original ALIEN story by creator Dan O'Bannon: "Space is uncaring, the universe would not change if humans went extinct, Humans believe themselves to be superior until faced with ancient things from the dark corners of the void of Space". Essentially, ALIEN 3 did as an H.P. Lovecraft novel, no happy endings, and many of the important people died...wait, didn't that happen in the previous movies? Of course it did! And the Alien Xenomorph wasn't shut out to space from an airlock this time.
    ALIEN 3 was a great movie with the premise that humans don't always win over the monsters, and like ALIEN the least expected character was the one that survived. ALIEN 3 was more like ALIEN and NOT ALIENS and that is what people cry about. Subjectively I love ALIEN 3 as an ALIEN franchise fan, and objectively, the movie IS a good movie but people wanted Guns a blazing, Power Loaders a Slappin'.

I'm really glad to see how much love it's getting in the comments. Though not a perfect film I love how the environment is such a hostile one for Ripley. There are some great characters played by some amazing actors. Hicks was a great character from Aliens but I fear that had he been in part of the movie he would have taken over the role as the hero of the franchise. It's a totally different film from the first two which is part of what I love about it. Some people can say that the script or the film should have been... but for me, a wooden planet with monks is not only hair-brained in my view, but it's also world breaking. It can go too wild so that it no longer feels like Alien, or you can rehash one of the first two films and that can so easily spoil the love that people have for them. It's a difficult balance to strike and I think, despite the troubles, they made something worth talking about. Love your work as always.

I liked Alien Resurrection, mostly for its twisted sense of humour, but the AVP ones, Prometheus and the last one I forgot the name of, were all in my opinion way, way worse.
    I kind of like the bleak theme and the dirty, rugged look of the sets. In that respect I think it follows the original two and shows us a movie universe that has been lived in. Where things get run down when they fall out of use. To me the setting has a kind of Wild West ghost town feel to it. But I like dystopic movies, so maybe that's it.
