- The original voice of Darth Vader, David Prowse, before George Lucas got all obsessive about 'perfecting' his 'vision', and redubbed the role with James Earl Jones.
Damn you, George Lucas! When will you stop 'fixing' things in Star Wars?!
That was definitely Prowse's voice, which was never meant to be used in the film. Carrie Fisher said her biggest acting challenge was not laughing when he spoke his lines. She called him "Darth Farmer."

Wow, just goes to show what a huge impact James Earl Jones had on the audience's perception of Darth Vader.
Usually, when people do voice-overs, they sound disconnected. James Earl Jones deserves much credit for the quality of his voice acting in this film.
The original Darth Vader voice said things over and over again. I like the movie version better.

Why? I actually believe that Prowse's voice was much more believable. It was very mean of Lucas to revoice Darth Vader without even telling the actor.
Iam Cleaver Directors do that type of underhanded shit all the time, for the "greater good" of the movie. Basically, they manipulate people and don't trust them with the truth ahead of time because they know how emotional, upset, and defensive people can get. Countless examples throughout history of directors getting actors/actresses to go farther than they wanted to go by misleading them initially to get them there and agreeing in the first place, and then it slowly becomes more, a little more, a little more, usually suddenly putting them in a situation where they feel like they almost can't say no, and feel pressured to do whatever it is (dangerous stunts, more nudity/sex, actually getting hit, etc)

I honestly feel bad for him. When I think of Darth Vader I immediately think of James Earl Jones. I think Prowse did a good job matching up with James’ voice.

According to a short clip from a documentary (on RUclips), they never intended to use Prowse's voice. They were using him only as the man in the suit and he said his lines in order for the other actors to play their parts. From the beginning, their plan was to voice it over (the eventually decided on James Earl Jones).
I could be wrong, but that is what the documentary said.
I love the physicality of David Prowse for Vader because his presnece is so powerful that it commands the respect the character deserves but if you think they should have kept his voice I would have to disagree with you entirely because James Earl Jones combined with Prowse physical appeatence is what made the whole package complete. And all those elements make the Darth Vader character epic and unforgetable.

Geez .. I seriously can't envision this voice characterization speaking any of the classic lines, I just realized how much the franchise depends on the voice of Darth, amazing! The difference between a good and genius movie, all those sets, costumes, effects would have been so diminished without James Earl Jones - that much cannot be overstated. Proof it's about personalities being in balance with CGI wizardry that makes a movie a sustained classic EP IV,V,VI.
Like it or not, that is your choice! I have been lucky to have worked for George Lucas and am simply amazed at how he strives to continually achieve brilliance in his work.. I was also lucky to meet and sit down with David Prowse and as he states, he is Darth Vader... Wow! (and got a signed photo with him too! Now if I could only create a small music video of a Star Wars Parody, I can truly die a loyal star wars fan...
@TieLandProductions Apparently the entire movie was filmed with David Prowse voice. It was a last minute decision to incorporate Jame Earl Jone's voice as Darth Vader.

The JEJ voiceover is simply excellent, but there is something wonderful about hearing Prowse's Bristolian burr coming from that suit. Maybe its cos I'm from Bristol and its a comforting sound to me, my dad knew Dave when he was a bouncer at a local club, and they have similar accents.

I think one of the re-releases should have an option to hear the original Darth Vader voice... that qualifies as a comedy in my opinion... could you imagine this voice in the infamous, "I am your father" line?
They re-re-re-re-re-released this movie in every available format, with every available extra EXCEPT a full version using this voice.
I have to say this makes Spaceballs even funnier. He sounds very much like Dark Helmet did.

True story (Google it): in order to preserve the secret ending of Empire Strikes Back ("I am your father!"), the dialogue Prowse spoke on-set was "Obi-Wan killed your father," to which Luke screamed, "No, that's impossible!" Therefore, any leaks from the set into the pre-internet fan community would be that Kenobi killed Luke's father. Only Lucas, Jones and Hamill knew what the line was actually going to be.

I think he's from Bristol, The UK has THE yes people; THE most diverse span of accents in the world. Seriously, there are over 30 in england alone. Counting, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland you begin to get the picture.
David Prowse was to record his voice in the post-production, but as Lucas shipped the tapes to the US without his voice, it was too expensive to get them back to the UK, so they hired James Earl Jones to dub the voice of Darth Vader instead. This story was confirmed by David Prowse himself.

My guess would be that atomicdancer was talking about people taking the "angry" request to restore the original voice seriously, rather than a comment about whether this voice was seriously legit or not.
No this is serious. That's the voice of the person inside the costume. Only later was it overdubbed with the voice of James Earl Jones.

that was the voice of the guy in the Darth Vader costume. he had to say the lines to cue the other actors. it was never going to be the actual voice.

BTW, the original theatrical release featured James Earl Jones' voice, not Prowse's as the message at the end seems to suggest! Dubbing over another actor prior to release is not uncommon. Another actor dubbed over Arnold Schwarzenegger in "Hercules In New York" (yeah, I know, cheesy movie) because his Austrian accent was considered to be very thick and audiences wouldn't understand him (and maybe true today)
Arnie in Herc in New York sounds like a drunk German yelling things about the chariots of Zeus or some shit..
Actually, that's a mistake - one people are always making. He's actually English, and his accent is a West Country accent (the kind we normally associate with farmers). On set, he was nicknamed "Darth Farmer."

Dave Prowse's voice was never used on screen, and was never meant to be used on screen. Dave had the tall body for the suit while James Earl Jones had the menacing voice. I say Darth Vader is simply too much of a character for one actor to play :P

To be fair as some others already touched on (most notaly Family Guy) James Earl Jones couldn't completely embody Vader either both physically and with the voice. Jones did the voice perfectly, but Prowse was definately fitting for the role physically. Also did they use his original voice for the monster Baron Frankenstein made in the last Hammer Frankenstein film? If that was his voice it sounded alot different than in here and was pretty intimidating (more so than the make-up was at least).

for one this voice wasnt in the original movies. The guy who voiced vader was the original voice thats one thing that was not changed in the movie. They needed a more menacing sounding voice than the voice the actor had.
Without James Earl Jones, it just isn't Vader. Prowse sounds like a voice that could have been used when the mask came off in Return of the Jedi. But Vader? Never. Not dark enough.
To be honest i think george went crazy in his later it was his idea to have darth redubbed this guy is no where near vocally intimidating but physically so

Everybody paints Lucas as a monster and a fiend when little things like Ewoks blinking are put into the movies and changes are made. But people find it hysterical that this was supposed to be the Original voice of Vader. If it wasn't for George making this CHANGE, Vader would only be half of the icon he is today. Very hypocritical if you ask me. Poor poor Lucas

It was the best choice, Prowse's voice would have never made this character menacing as J.E.Jones did. It's not "perfecting his vision" (which in fact was done after 1997, not in '77 post-production), it's "good sense for the sake of the movie".

It was never planned to use his voice in the first place. They had to redo it anyway because of the bad acoustics the helmet caused. Adding another guy for the breathing, another for the stunts and another for his death, making a total of 5 actors for 1 role and thats only for the originals.

How about Sauron from Lord of the Rings? Would it have been best to give him a high alto voice when he spoke? No. And sure, the British bad guy is a common one, but the voice has to fit the character. This isn't like Cutler Beckett from Pirates of the Caribbean. Do you know they changed Darth Maul's voice to a gruffer, more menacing tone? Ray Park also had a higher pitched voice not appropriate for his character.
if darth vader werent walking around in a big black suit, i'd be a little intimidated. sure its a little snobbish, but he's got an edge

Makes matters much worse that they were terrible changes.
for continuity, it might have worked, Prowses' voice certainly sounds more like Anakin (HC)
James Earl Jones has ALWAYS been the voice of Darth Vader. There was never any release, theatrical or home video, that features David Prowse as the voice. David Prowse was simply the guy in the suit. He says the lines and all, but it was all dubbed over by Jones for the theatrical release.

I just don't like some of the changes in the special editions especially when they replaced sebastian shaw with hayden in ROTJ and the too hi tech prequels plus of course poor choice for the roles of anakin and amidala

I always thought it was a pretty obvious joke about the changes George Lucas has made to the Star Wars movies, and the fanboys' reactions to those changes.

Err... the theatrical release already had James Earl Jones as Darth Vader's voice. This is not something that George Lucas added after the fact in his special editions.
