  • I randomly got my hands on a Casio MG-500. Seemingly one of the only implementations of Midi in a guitar with 0% hazzle ever created! Such a beauty and it unlocks all kinds of interesting stuff that I never knew I wanted to think of doing before! Very straight forward and just plain fun.

Awesome video Simon! Those Casio MG/ PG guitars are actually really well made. According to stuff I've read online, they were allegedly built for Casio by Ibanez, and branded as "Casio".
They were part of Casio's late 80's "Professional" line up, where you had the VZ series synths (VZ-1/ VZ-10M/ VZ-8M), and also the FZ samplers (FZ-1/ FZ-10M/ FZ-20M) that were sold in the same category as the MG/ PG guitars. IIRC, the VZ-8M was designed primarily to be paired with the MG/ PG guitars. Sadly, at the turn of the 90s Casio dropped out of the "Pro" market sector despite having produced some pretty awesome products. I suspect it was a combination of brand snobbery, as many elitists looked down on anything with a Casio badge on it, along with Casio's public image of making toy/ home keyboards leading to less than expected sales. Plus Casio was still very successful with their home keyboard products, so maybe they just focused on the market sector that gave them the most profits. Our loss, as imagine what Casio might have come up with had they continued developing products for their professional division.
There's also the more well known Casio DG guitars that were awesome too, though they were nowhere near the quality or had the abilities of the MG/ PG guitars. I have just purchased a DG-20 as I wanted to explore what a bonkers digital guitar with a Flash Gordon aesthetic could do in the modern age!
BTW, @ 4.15 - the little switch might be a coil tap for the humbucker, so you can switch it from single coil to dual coil (humbucker)?

They were built in the Ibanez factory which is why it looks like an Ibanez Roadstar. I used to have one of them in black. The MIDI didn't work but it was a great guitar to play. The pickups were really good.

I still own my Roland Gk-2a. I used to run midi synths along side my guitar rack interface to give a lot of depth to my live performances. I honestly knew very few people that actually did this, but I was always complimented for my setup and the quality of sound I had. 5 or so years ago I bought a guitar with the midi pickups designed into it, but I haven't dusted off the rest of the gear yet.

I've got the identical guitar only in black, but it had a battery leakage incident sometime in the '90s and I haven't gotten around to fixing it yet. The main thing I remember was often having to play low stuff an octave up to help with tracking, and then just transposing back down in MIDI. Never had a tracking issue above the open A string. It worked amazingly for the time.

My grandpa had one of these he used to gig with. He had a midi box loaded with a bunch of pre-programmed backing tracks he kept track of in a binder, each with its own number and lead instrument he would play. I think he had a foot pedal too, like the kind you would use to play bass accompaniment I guess.

Love that piece of music at the end. Very evocative of something, I don't know what.
A few years ago I bought a Roland Gr-33 of Ebay for a few hundred dollars, installed the pickup on an old tele copy. It's pretty nice to play if the pickup is set right. Works pretty much just like the Casio in this video.
Recently I played through a modern guitar synth though. You just plug any guitar into it, then it figures out what notes you are playing, even full chords!

I feel like Simon has this migration away from RUclips every now and then, very much like a magpie in winter. He goes away and comes back refreshed. There’s no ‘burn out’ to worry about because he makes his videos in his own time. The money isn’t everything and a lot more RUclipsrs could learn a lot from him, they may even be happier in the long run. Thanks for being you Simon.

The second person who taught me Jazz (who was also a Spanish teacher where I went to high school) owned an Ibanez model (H-S-H configuration) branded by Casio. I had first heard him playing that guitar plugged into one of his own synthesizers in the pit of a school play in the neighboring middle school auditorium, and I was always curious about how it worked. It was great hearing him play it up close in the high school Jazz club,

MIDI guitars never really took off like the companies wanted them to. The midi instruments and effects didn’t sound great because of the hardware limitations back in the 80’s and early 90’s and the associated exorbitant cost. There were some artists who took advantage of the possibilities of the technology and were able to create some amazing sound scapes with them. If you combine them with a decent synth or midi sound card they are actually pretty cool. I have a modern midi pickup system called the Fishman Triple Play. It’s a midi pickup you can mount on any guitar and it gives you the full range of midi possibilities. You can use it to apply effects, transcribe music digitally in real time, trigger a full range of orchestral sounds, create loops or play pre recorded musical phrases or sound clips. I use it with Guitar Pro to transcribe music when I’m songwriting so I don’t forget something later on. It will even pickup bends and slides, hammer ons and pull offs. An invaluable tool as a song writer. And unlike other midi guitar systems which are incredibly expensive, you can pick one up pretty cheap if you shop around. I bought mine at a Black Friday sale for $250 Australian. If you’ve never tried a midi guitar you should give it a go.
