  • What happens when you eat nothing but emergency ration bars for a whole week? Can you actually live on emergency rations?
    I decided to try! For a whole week I ate only emergency ration bars. But I didn’t just do that, I tried out several of the most popular ones you can buy.
    Check out what happens when emergency rations is all you eat.
    Here are all the ration bars I tested:
    S.O.S. Rations: amzn.to/45eMRZv
    Ready Hour: www.mypatriots...
    High Energy Bar: amzn.to/3QHSYRB
    Ultimate Survival Technologies: amzn.to/3QGAxN6

    I guess if they were too tasty there's a risk people might want some more and use them up too fast....

      Maybe. I had the opposite problem. After a few days I was choosing starvation over nutrition.

    These (USCG rated) only have a shelf life of 5 years instead of 20 but are rated for extreme hot and cold temperatures. Peanut butter can’t do that but I do wonder how long most freeze dried meals can stay good in 100+ degree weather.

    I have to ask with you losing 5% of your body weight if the threat of refeeding syndrome crossed your mind. I feel you'd have to reintroduce regular calories / food back into your system **slowly** to prevent any complications.

    • @GoldenAgeofCOD
      @GoldenAgeofCOD 6 месяцев назад +1

      No because he was eating and these bars have potassium in it. Refeeding is a result of overloading your body with potassium

      My basal metabolic rate is well over 2,000 calories per day. Which means even if I rested all day, which I don’t, that number of calories leaves me at a deficit.
      At my weight, that’s okay. But it wouldn’t be sustainable for a long period of time.

    A jar of peanut butter has more calories and more protein, tastes better and is cheaper than the emergency rations of the same weight.

      True, but it would be much more difficult not to eat too much of it per day, at least for me… 🤪

      Wouldn’t peanut butter shelf life be less than emergency ration?

    • @randyyeager
      @randyyeager 7 месяцев назад +2

      @@lamtran1934 Yes but it's also used every day. Not just made for a survival situation, so you can replace it before it expires and eat it. I don't even understand why people think they need a 25 year shelf life for bugout bag food. If shit goes sideways, yer gonna eat everything you're carrying in your bugout bag in a week.

    • @kimwoodbury3885
      @kimwoodbury3885 6 месяцев назад +4

      It does, but it also sticks to your mouth and makes you thirsty a lot more (not good if you have limited water, and you'd have to eat much slower for safety reasons so your mouth doesn't get way too sticky) as well as the shorter shelf life

    I don't think you understand the purpose of emergency ration bars. They aren't meant for general food storage, but for specific use cases. Most of them were originally designed for storage in high humidity and variable temperatures, like on a boat. That's what the 5 year rating is for. They also work well for emergency food stored in a car as the temperatures varies greatly in a car and most storage type food goes bad quickly in high temperatures. For example: Mountain House should be stored at 75 F or below (per their FAQ). I can't find it now, but I did see a quote that says Mountain House should be replaced every year or 2 if stored at high temperatures in a car.
    Another issue is preparing food in boats or cars. How are you going to boil water in an emergency raft in the ocean? Do you want to get out of your car to boil water after getting stuck in a huge snow storm? So while they might not be the best for general food storage, they do fill a need that other products don't meet. They'll give you some time to try improve your situation and find better a better solution.

      They definitely have a purpose. But I see them in lots of pre-made 72-hour kits based on the assumption that you’ll live on them for 3 straight days. It’s better to have them than nothing, but only marginally after day 1.

    • @jameskelly1680
      @jameskelly1680 5 месяцев назад

      Agree. The purpose of this type of ration is to be stored on a life raft under any conditions for 5 years. They are not thirst provoking. And the high-carbohydrate ratio means that they don't use much water to digest, the way you'd have with protein.
