I think a major reason why people focus so much on the justice aspect is that they view crime the same way L and Light do, refusing to see that crime as a symptom of a disease (even though they justify their own actions this way). This was definitely a really eye-opening video and brought up a lot of stuff I didn't notice before. The way it displays authority, morality, and the like are all very reflective of Japanese society which I think is also an important point to remember when watching. As you said, these messages you bring up weren't intentional but I feel still says a lot about the series and the concepts themselves that they could be so easily read from the material against the creators' intention.

@@ProfessorViral I have to say, it was a good one, and you made me remember some of the things I forgot.
The point about the lesser criminals getting disease, etc (which is actually probably more horrific a punishment, as we tend to make the death penalty as quick and painless as possible, not through giving them AIDS), was completely dropped from both the anime and manga (and something I forgot he said).
L, and even Mello and Near, we're all the products of a shadowy organization that's mentioned and then dropped, but they really made it a point that they were all extreme versions of Sherlock Holmes, a brilliant detective with Asperger's and a heroin addiction whose only delight is in solving a mystery.
Which actually, in retrospect, makes me appreciate that the Netflix adaptation had at least made L seem like he had some mental conditions...
EDIT: also, really enjoyed the energy and content this time. Great job!

Also, a live action movie duology came out shortly after the anime, and I’m going to spoil the ending, so watch these movies before reading. Toning down the antics by quite a bit, the characters seeming only slightly weirder than your average human, the movies actually have room to talk about the concepts the Fanbase has been talking about since the show came out. My favorite moment is when Lite’s dad asks him why he is doing all this, and he says that it’s because of how rotten the justice system is and how he, being the God he is, is the only one that can dish out real justice. His dad agrees with the former, saying that this is because of the imperfections of humanity, that finding real Justice is a never ending effort, but despises, the latter, saying that this is a vast turn in the other direction.

    • @manticoraus
      @manticoraus Год назад +3

No she did not here's the thing light and L look glorious and important but are ultimately children misa looks like a child but she tells you something very f****** important
She's basically what they are without the mask on or more accurately with a mask that if death note appeals to you you'll hate and if you hate Lisa then guess what you have to think how she ended up in that situation and what light actually thinks of her. She is a direct reflection of the results of light's ideals right back at him and he despises the very idea of her
That should tell you everything that you need to know but you can easily blind yourself with all the other excuses you're not as impulsive you're not as Dixie you're not a girl
And on and on and on
When in fact she's got her eyes pretty much on the prize she wanted to hook up with Kira she hooked up with Kira the fact that she's doing so in a self destructive manner doesn't even matter because she doesn't actually value life save as the means to pursue her goals or pleasures
Like doesn't really have any ideas he just thinks he does
After all when this starts he doesn't actually want to become a cure but later he does part of the problem is and I blame the anime adaptation for this is that like doesn't have a fall from grace so much as he immediately becomes a charismatic supervillain
The manga is a bit more subtle about it where you see him as a kid in a bad situation not realizing that hes digging his weight down instead of out. His ultimate fall from grace is the killing of Naomi Missouri
That is the moment where he says I am Kira a name which he mocks early on
You could justify killing the cops because I don't know a cab or whatever the professor is on about
You could justify killing the criminals because the criminals are scum
You could justify killing L because L asked for it
But Missouri is merely going to give some information that will unravel a deception
There is no reason to kill her if hes not going to kill the task force all of whose veins he knows and where they are
He is doing this purely as a display of power and self satisfaction to be fair of the anime does add it in with him sadistically taunting her as she's under the effects of the mind control
But I think it's very essential that light ultimately when the mask trips isn't a tragic figure but a pathetic loser one.
To be fair part of the problem is so much of the plot bends in order to keep the cat and mouse gang going but they have to elevate light to the point where you have too much of the narrative or at least being that could not just be him sell his own height
It does help though that a very simple trick that happened years ago basically sealed his fate without him even knowing itWhat's from the character that it long devolved into the dumb Watson for the exact reason he told him the 1st time they met. Your actions are my entertainment you stop being entertaining your life is over
The only thing that justifies the entire amnesia arc to me is the fact that it's an out of place origin story it's the 1st time we actually get to see an uncorrupted light so we understand where he started from and how he ended up. Most other adaptations try to create a sense of build-up and that unfortunately negates the need for the amnesia arc so it always gets truncated or seems a bit out of place or not as spectacular

Just saw this one. Once again, you've done a great analysis of one of my favorite childhood anime.
I don't know where I've read this, but I know a quote from someone, regarding Justice.
"Justice doesn't only mean punishing the Criminals, it should also give chance to the Criminals to be human again. After all, they are humans like you and me, by the end of the day. They bleed, they feel happy and sadness, and most of all, love others."
I agree with you btw. Both L and Light are just awful people who thinks they are Justice themselves...when they're just clowns wearing a fancy stash and mocking golden crown while screaming 'I am right, and the world is just wrong.' while parading along the street.

My exact thoughts when I rewatched the series as an adult. Of course, it's easy for Light to judge people and think that "bad" ones should be killed, when he himself has never been in harsh conditions. He has both parents, his own room and has never had a serious trauma. Would he be as lawful as he thinks if he was born into a drug addict family in poor neighborhood where joining a gang is the only way to make a living? I'm not saying this justifies being a criminal, but we can't judge people like that just because we were lucky not to be in their shoes.
Moreover, I would respect Light more if he was doing what he was doing out of sympathy for the crime victims and their pain, but he was basically doing that for his own ego. Misa shows more of that as her desire to be Kira goes from real pain she suffered being a victim, it makes her reasoning more human and understandable (still doesn't justify her actions). Light is an example that intellect isn't everything and that emotional intelligence matters.
L is also showing little sympathy. Though he has more human-like qualities in him, he's still not much better than LIght.
I remember watching the anime as a teen and choosing "who is cooler: Light or L". Now I think both are horrible people. And if I had to choose a character from the series to be my friend, that would be Matsuda. He is a kinda normal human being who is capable of human emotions and empathy. In reality, it's more important how good people are as people rather than how smart they are.

I personally think crime is both a societal issue and a personal choice sure external pressures can influence people to be more likely to commit a crime but the individual who commits that crime always has the final choice whether or not they commit a crime but that doesn't mean the government shouldn't try to help people not getting put in a situation where it's a genuine struggle not to commit crime and I always think criminals should have a path to redemption if a criminal commits a crime but regrets what they did and wants to do better I think there should always be a path given to them so that they may have redemption not just on a personal level but also on a legal level.

i agree crime is a choice oftentimes. light is rarely seen targeting petty criminals. and r*pe is prevalent in every class, whether impoverished or not. it is common in the city light lives in, in japan. it is common in the middle and upper class. it is entirely about power, and i like that light takes that power from those men honestly. i know he is flawed, but the argument that he is privileged and far removed from crime? frankly, i find it ignorant. not too woke. 😆

You need to understand something about the political discussion in the media. Unfortunately, there are those who will get defensive if you just say specific words, but unfortunately, there is a reason for that, and that reason is because people have inserted these discussions into places they don’t belong. Death note, being a grounded world, is open to this kind of discussion because of how messy the world is, how real it seems, but for something like dragonball, it would feel rather forced.

However Prof's videos, especially his Psycho Pass ones (lesser so this one) have made me start to realize it's not politics in general that I hate being mentioned, it's PARTISAN politics, and I wonder if a lot of other people feel the same they just don't draw the distinction between discussion of political process and ideas vs using media to support partisan talking points 🤷🏻‍♀️

I don't know what to make the meaning of the story or how to keep it consistent and make every character define it in their own way. While the kira task force are portrayed in an idealized way, the majority of cops in the series and the police force as a whole is not.

Finch proposes a partnership with that he will hire him, dude that wants redemption aan feels bad and lost, and they get numbers, which i limited as finch in his wisdom before giving the government acess, gave that the warnings it gives, are just social security numbers, victim or perpetrator.

So I just wanna say : As a kid, I thought Light was cool... Buuut~ the parts that made me uncomfortable , I looked away and pretended I didn't see it.
Kiyomi Takeda was the episode I skipped after seeing it for the first time.
As someone pushing 30, Light reminds me of a white American with a gun who sees a LOT of black people and the dilapidated neighborhoods they live in and the criminality surrounding them.
Light-cop blames the black people, but he ignores the people who cut their education, let rich people get cutbacks instead of investing in the city itself, pay the police union a whole lot , which makes Light-cop happy. Light-cop also doesn't know the history or why crime tends to flourish in poverty, he just sees the criminals and presses down on the hammer of "Justice". His attitude towards black people doesn't change when he meets non-criminal black people, or black law abiding citizens, just being black is enough for them being one move away from "justice".

    Edit:
I just finished the video and I have to ask, I'm struggling to understand what makes anyone not in the police and special task force not authoritarian? I didn't see that as a problem until this video because I always thought the issue was that the issue was that the judge, jury, & executioner was down to one person instead of several or an agency. I thought it was the usurpation of ability to lay justice outside of the law was the issue. It's what made L & Light basically the same coin to me.

Light and L are two highly manipulative psychopaths with different loose principles and goals to justify their actions who get depressed when they're bored and would die for a sense of purpose. That's why I didn't feel sad when they both died, they died doing what they enjoy the most, facing death for a sweet addictive adrenaline rush. Light was a vigilante and as the first OP song lyrics imply, has a revolutionary sense of justice which is often chaotic, swift and brutal while L represents the authorities fighting to be the exclusive enforcers of violence. They both strive to be leaders of both opposite sides of the battle and take the challenge very personally. Neither of them care about the material conditions and injustices that cause crime to rise in the first place as Light only once wacked a group of degenerate shareholders of a major corporation as a distraction and wasn't that much focused on combating wage theft or imperialism, only surgically amputating the resulting symptoms of the broader issues which in turn ended wars and lowered crime rates. This was all done with a sense of simple reward and punishment without any nuance and as a bonus so he can justify playing god.

Death Note does not address questions of morality of crime and punishment in-depth because it's ultimately just another shonen series about rivals competing, despite the anime's extremely pretentious directing. It was written for 13-year old kids, so of course all the major characters operate in idealistic absolutes and never actually try to address systematic causes of crime, and their morality is never substantially challenged. This is why I like Code Geass better, it actually addresses a lot of things people like to pretend Death Note addresses.
I like your analysis of the police force in the story though

@@Shadow666_ I mean lets just pretend The Daily Wire doesn't make movies, there aren't still a handful of Right wing morons working in Hollywood pushing out BLATANTLY Right leaning messages still or anything like that and just assume it's some obscure church film about Jesus saying "Gays aren't that cool or whatever" as if the Right's influence is solely online and everyone in Hollywood is just some "woke" Liberal activist with nothing better to do than suggest we treat others like human beings.
Explain "pushing propaganda" anyways. Because when I hear it said something is "propaganda" they tend to point to gay people existing as if that's somehow a political statement and not just someone that exists in real life just existing in film. Now compare that to shit like ANYTHING The Daily Wire produces, like their new "comedy" Lady Ballers. Literally just "Trans bad and women sports bad but we defend it from the bad transes but lol women suck in general" the movie. It ends with the owner of The Daily Wire telling his poor daughter that men are generally better than women in everything but the one thing women are good at is having kids. This isn't mentioning that whole "What Is A Woman" "documentary" that Matt "They're most fertile at 16" Walsh.
It's true that more people in entertainment are Left leaning to an extent, not entirely Leftists, more Liberal if anything. But that doesn't mean it's not like The Right doesn't pump out almost EXCLUSIVELY propaganda. But then again, what you define as "propaganda" on the Left tends to mean "Gays or blacks exist and it mentions Trump". Again as if somehow we're ignoring The Right's constant talk of Biden and his son who's not even a politician or someone truly relevant.

As a quaker, his beliefs kinda pushed him to value rehabilitation over retribution and he had a hand in building one of the first prisons in the US to that principle. That shift, along with other reforms gives us the values we have today. There's also both the british and the American concepts "innocent before proven guilty" which heuristically means that we would rather a guilty person walk than an innocent person be held for a crime they didn't commit...
