- Live each day as if it was your last; an excuse, like any other, not to live true.
There are many common statements saying something like “live like you’re dying,” with the intent of getting people to live life more, to be more adventurous and do those things we’ll regret missing later in life. While the intent is good, I think there’s more under the surface here. Is it really good to live like you’re dying? Or is it just an excuse not to make decisions, the same as boring everyday life?
To explore this, we’ll be using the anime movie I Want to Eat Your Pancreas, which tells the tale of a dying girl who lives an ordinary life, but puts a new emphasis on those everyday aspects we hate so much. With a different view, can we find value in each and every day? Let's discuss by analyzing this great anime movie in today’s video essay.

I clicked on this video because it made me think of the decision that lead to so much struggle in my life.
When i was in my 6th grade year of school i was being surrounded with my own depression, stress and exhaustion and i didn't like the path i saw before me. I saw the idea of working hard, following rules and fitting into society as being this cage that i never fit into and if i tried would suffocate me. When i read a quote online that said something along the lines of "live every day as if its your last" or "dont live for tomorrow, just live today" or "do the things that make you happy now" something along those lines, it flipped a switch in my head. I wasn't happy at school, it was hard, and everything that everyone had ever set out in my life if i continued trying to do what they said i should seemed so miserable... So one day in class i looked over at my friend and i said "im done, im not doing this anymore." And i was. I spent the next few years just doing whatever i felt like at the time. I didn't do anything in school. I tell stories now about it occasionally and people are surprised, they talk about how much they envy it and how i seemed so free, i think the people around me maybe had some feelings like that when i was doing it. However it all came around to screw me when i had a second chance at life. My mom wasn't great and when we got kicked out i faced homelessness or to live with the other side of my family and i chose to live with them. Suddenly my life had structure, people who wouldn't allow a kid to continue living the way i did and i figured it was about time to just get the things i had to do over with.. but you cant erase years of your life where you missed things you should have been doing because you didnt want to do them. School was even harder for me than ever since i hadn't payed any attention in years, getting such bad grades my teachers stopped even giving me work to do. I couldn't keep up, i was swamped with everything in my life that i should have done, should have learned to be a functioning person now that my life was more than ditching, smoking, drinking, and music. I have struggled ever since i stopped living only for today, because when i lived for today, there was no tomorrow, today was all there was and the future would never matter.. and now that im living that future, its so hard. I don't know how to take care of myself very well, i don't know how to make a life secure or how to step forward. I wasted years of my life in an important time where we learn the foundation for who we are and how we live with the idea of living like today was all there was. The worst part is even though i regret it, and even though its screwed me... God i miss it. I miss not caring about tomorrow, i miss the confidence and selfishness that it gave me, to seek only the pleasures i could grasp and to let everything that didnt feel good slip by, nothing was important to me other than feeling better, feeling good. I dont think i was a bad person, but I wasn't great and i messed up my life doing it. But i miss it. I miss it so much.
I clicked on this video because it's title reminded me of that choice, and i want to see what you have to say on it, because it was a huge choice that set a foundation for who i am and what happened to my life.

I'm an older autodidact of various things. This video really hit me. I have a specific condition that's going to lead to a bad prognosis eventually. I felt such catharsis in this video *because* you went so in depth with the Mandelbrot Butterfly. You didn't over focus on the sentimentality of this specific situation, which I appreciated. Focusing on it from an engineering perspective allowed me to engage with this topic without the emotional restrictions I'd usually face if this were reflected in informal prose. Thank you so much, now I have a movie to watch and my day has become much brighter.

The curse of humanity which was even stated in Genesis of the Bible is to spend our days away toiling every day. To survive work must be done no matter the condition of society. Be it alone in a forest be it a cog in a futuristic city. Keep pushing that boulder friends and don’t you dare go hallow.
There will always be a level of work that needs done, and our duty to each other is to do it. I wonder how even that load is though, and if the ways were made to toil in modern context are necessary
I think the comparison between integration of equations and decision making can also be applied to differentiation and future decision making. Searching for the causes of why a decision is made is almost just like finding justification for why a decision should be made; both demonstrating how the further you move away from the present, the more uncertain the outcome because of the loss in complexity. More specifically, thinking in a higher order of complexity about guiding principles surrounding a certain subject will help you in making the right decisions, but becomes increasingly impractical as more variables are introduced into the situation.
For sure. I really like that note about the future. As the equation would grow more simple, it would be as if we can only zero in on one single variable out of many (really, the comparison to math would have been even better with multiple variables like x, y, z, etc to show this even more, that simplicity in one decision means uncertainty in others)

I have to not think about death to avoid void-induced panic attacks haha. But it is true, if you imagine only the end and live from that, you'll miss everything which surrounds the rest

I would like to live each day like its an adventure, going someplace new, dating people, and generally enjoying life, but realistically, its not going to happen. Financially im stuck: only having about 100$ left every paycheck to spend on myself. It takes a long time to buy anything expensive. I only get one week of unpaid leave every few months. Socially, I avoid people because they give me headaches. I live minimally, and expect anything but a life of excitement. My perspective and environment are in synergy.

I think in will be interesting to make another video of this movie related to the moment of the farewell letter. The way it shows how the two characters were looking into each other all the time, growing with their presence, and incorporating the thing that the other had, was a really good climax to the story. As you put in the video, the relationship between the two can't be described in simple terms of friendship or love. It is waaaaaay more complex than this over simplification of human relationships. It is so unique that the two of them arrived to the same original way of describing it: The two of them, wanted to eat the prancreas of the other, to have a part of the other in their own lives. They embraced the complexity of what they have, and admired how the other gave them tools to live. That why i think the ending is not really a sad one. Sakura was going to die anyway, by pure random chase, instead of his "destined" death by his sickness. But more importantly, the presence of sakura in shiga is going to be eternal, they ate the pancreas of each other during their time together. Shiga is going to remember what sakura taught him for all of his life, and in that sense, it will give meaning to his life. Or in his words "all my choices were made, so I was able to meet you", and he has willing to let her change his life, for the better. (sorry for my bad English, I am not a native speaker)
I think that living in the moment and living like there's no tomorrow are bad ideas in general. Even if you die in the next moment, your actions will live on, and other people will have to deal with the consequences.
You should live as though you have all the time in the world, but your opportunities have an expiration date, choosing your experiences and "projects" (long term goals or careers or things that you are just going to have to continually work on or at for a long time), and that, outside of momentary embarrassment, you have to live with the consequences or effects of those actions for a long time.
Secondly, I agree that we cannot choose every choice with the severity and weight of how it may or may not alter our life. It's absurd to project into the future to any great degree as to what the consequences may be of eating poptarts vs. cereal, or many of our other actions (though, we generally can predict how things might make us feel, or through knowing others and empathy how our actions might make others feel, and through this, we may have a good degree of how we affect the experiences of others. (I think this is missing from a lot of existentialist thoughts which assume both that everything IS a choice, including the consequences, which they are not, and they are unknowable; that people are islands of choice and consequence unto themselves, which again, is terrible untrue. I am affected greatly by the choices of others, from the laws mandated to the availability of cereals in the stores I shop in; and that all choices are equally weighted, and though my choice in breakfast foods may help me meet a cute girl at a diner and bond over our love of a grapefruit, eye toast, and 2 eggs over easy, and thus set me down a completely different path in life than, say, eating a poptart, the amount of collateral damage that we can predict (versus what we do not know or cannot predict or find as outliers of our predictions) is directly related to the importance and attention we give that choice)).
Also, you get two gold stars today: one for posting where you can find the anime you are talking about (because it's a HUGE pet peeve of mine for people to review a title and not tell you how you can find it) and one for finding this movie on Facebook....lol. watching anime on FB or RUclips and letting people know is one of the most punk/awesome ghetto things I can think of. (Also, RUclips has a LOT of older anime titles. I even found old manga entertainment titles and of all things, dominion tank police, which, I highly recommend)
I really like these kinds of videos, exploring so deep and trying to make heads and tails of stories like this, must be a lot of theory crafting and i am a fan of those. Keep up the good work i really enjoy listening to your videos.

Ok.... I am still new to anime, but I've made it essentially tradition to watch your corresponding video to whatever anime I had just finished watching. I am very grateful that you do what you do, as I believe it will help me live a more enjoyable and meaningful life. From what I can recognize, ofc not knowing you, I can claim that I once had a similar ability to analytically dissect, in my case live action film, composition. Something unfortunate happened, and now I am just grateful to learn that someone else is doing something similar. Doing it myself was an invaluable experience for me, and thus why I am immensely grateful why you do what you do. I can still learn to the same depth, albeit not from myself anymore. Thank you.

She went with the flow. She embraced decision.
Also, it isn't contradictory and promotes the idea of living like you are dying because she mentions the bucket list after her mentioning her advocacy for living like you are dying. But, it actually still supports the idea of living in the moment because contradictory or not, that is just what she happened to remember in the moment, her bucket list incidentally after mentioning that. It supports her idea of not having definite purpose in what she says.
I think I get it. Both of the points above support the idea, the latter in a very interesting way with essentially subpoint contradiction, that you should embrace decision.

I clicked this vedio, because I recently decided that I wouldn't live like its my last day, as any day could be the last doesn't that mean living itself is like living your last day. Living like its your last days was meant to help with appreciating the days, but if any day could be the last, doesn't that mean treating it deferent is appreciating it less? ... live every day like you're alive, good bad, boring exciting, simple complex. Life isn't one or the other, life is just that. I don't want to live like this or like that, I want to live every day, good or bad, boring or exciting, simple or complex, life is life. And it always finds a way, so why can't you... or I
Life is life for sure. I often reject when people suggest philosophies for living life (even though this is technically that as well) for that reason. I want to experience life, not a slice of life determined through one principle
I would like to suggest to you to watch Money Heist: Joint Economic Area. It’s a quick watch of 12 incredible episodes and has lots of elements from anime you’ve watched and enjoyed. From Akane, Makishima, Kogami Psycho Pass vibes and parallels to L and Lights dynamic, code geass, and so much more! I think it could create a great discussion video! I know it’s not anime but I can see how you could tie it into your anime content by discussing the similar elements to psycho-pass, death note, code geass, and other anime and getting into the overall message!

I love it, plus it doubles as obscure anime recommands, and its surprising moving and thought provoking. Its somehow basic and really poignant. It sounds like that.
Like its obviousor should be, but maybe thats why there need limits to it, but also really go deep asking things. To ssee the choices that can be made, to see more options, to expand to be able to focuswhere you want, not jut what youknow, that you create choices by aking it complicated and ground it.
To practice contructing and reconstructive perpectives on your term, not dictated simple informations.
Thats probably why asking questions and do that philosophicing is good, but also do ground it.
And dismiss a lot useless , but also you have a choice now what you want to dismiss.
Or that yes escapatism is fiction , but one that is onr that teaches to contruct and disconstruct our perception, how there are different views, How to break an easier fictional work apart but also apreciate the complexity and mess to make , to learn to do it at the real world.
Also the brain really loves narrative so its a good tool to learn about narratives to be aware of our own.Becaue thats what the brain does, being lazy and overwork. And stories are both because written by humans, i guess.
Like its alsointeresting how any story worth it has a meta element, omething, whatever that it wants to get across, and is usually pretty honest about but deceptive too. Like a show, a movie. Ok thats communication. But a memorable story has that strong.
Ok off topic childrens stories are probably harder and young adult, because they have to do that without relying on someones complicated comple experience and still retain the core without reducing it (or as little as possible)

She doesn't make things pure chance, she rejects pure chance by putting a reason to everything on the spot

Knowledge is like the sun the light being knowledge and the dark questions, the bigger it gets the more darkness surrounds it, life is so wrapped in irony the wosest thujg you can say is I know nothing life wothout death isnt life light without dark isnt okay dualism rant haha. Although I believe the universe is threefold like an atom everything has a pos neg and neutral state. 1 is the opposite of minus 1 with 0 in the middle 0 is the opposite of infinity a concept not a mathematical truth. I even believe it makes a lot of sense that dark matter would actually be neutral matter not caught in the maelstrom of annihilation and the fact is only interacts through gravity and interestingly negative matter has positive gravitional mass too as neutral matter should. Also it follows the parreto principle (80-20 rule whatever]

thank you for your work, professor v. you are my companion whenever i have to train. I listen to you while I stretch and lift some weights. much better than listening to music. I am always amazed at how deep you are willing to go. great thing that you make a kind of philosophy lesson out of anime. i always have the same thought when i listen to you: we humans are looking for meaning in the meaningless (was that a quote from kirkegaard or schoppenhauer?) - we are basically "gestalten" or shadows that are labeled as "humans". . anyway, i saw the anime a long time ago. found it good. but as someone who is ill myself at the moment i can add something: it's the simple things in life that should be enjoyed without thinking too much about them. because at a certain point you will miss them the most. It's bad when you're bedridden by an illness. when you feel in your body as if you were imprisoned. then things like "efficiency" and "complexity" don't matter. Of course you can't live every day like your last. But you can learn to take things as they come. But I would be interested, dear professor, whether you believe in something like reincarnation or life-after-death. sometimes i wish i could be born again to make everything right. like in an isekai flick.
One of my earliest story ideas that I still hold to this day has reincarnation as a fundamental aspect of the plot. Realizing that I work out my feelings through these ideas, I can say I want to believe in reincarnation, at least. I want to one day try and put some logic to it, or see what others have said. For right now, its just a simple desire
