      @VillainGamingFN No...just...no...?
      If I was to change the ending, it would mostly go as written in the manga. Where my changes would start would be when Matsuda pulls his gun and Nears bodyguards take aim at him shouting "don't move!" In my version Mikami, having finished his work and being startled by the sudden violence bolts. There's no need to hang around, Mikami's day couldn't get any better. He just glimpsed his god and doubtlessly pleased him.
      Meanwhile, back in the warehouse, everyone is frozen in the standoff. Light really has no desire to break it, he thinks he has just won. Near, actually holding the better hand thinks Mikami little more than a loose end that can be rounded up whenever. Oddly enough though, it is Light that breaks the silence. He just can't contain his laughter as he is counting down the seconds. Aizawa asks Light "what's so damn funny" and is answered with a monolog about the power of Kira and the hubris of humanity thinking it can stand against such a power. Everyone is clearly put off by such strange statements and Matsuda, probably not intentionally thinking out loud, voices "Light, are you Kira?" Light's internal counting reaches "38...39...", he flashes his biggest winning smile and goes to proclaim his victory but gets out little more than "I..." before clutching his chest in pain. The task force members surround Light, moving to catch him as he collapes to the ground. The only other smile in the room fades as Near implores Light to finish his declaration. The only thing on Light's mind though is 'did Mikami betray me...the bastard!', but then he and Near notice Ryuk chuckling. "Remember what I told you in the beginning Light..." Ryuk gleefully declares as he returns his notebook to it's place on his waist. As life leaves Light's body Near full of fear questions Ryuk "what do you mean Shinigami....what did you tell him!?" This outburst draws the attention of everyone else in the room, and Near, as if just remembering everyone else exists, goes to pull out the the real deathnote to explain. The only thing is, he seems to have misplaced it. Near turns his attention to where Ryuk was, but the only part left is his fading chuckles "humans sure are...interesting". The task force, fearful of sharing a fate with Light, demand answers and Near explains everything about finding and duplicating Mikami's deathnote. Near assures everyone that Mikami is a non threat and easy to find (being so meticulously rigid).
      Cut to some time later. Mikami was never found. The Kira case has gone cold. Numerous copycats have appeared, but well, clearly are copycats and most are easily captured and convicted.

    I actually enjoyed Near and Mello. I thought it was cool that Light still had to battle L, even after he managed to kill him. The last two episodes of death note still give me chills. When Light finally admits to being kira, and just completely loses his sanity. It was the only time we saw light being completely transparent with everyone. Then Mikakmi just kills himself after failing to fulfill his “Gods” expectation.

    I actually love the second half but the only problem is that what Near did with Mikami's notebook is just impossible. No way Giovanni just casually broke into his safe, made a perfect copy of the notebook with tens of thousands of names in it and switched it all in less than a day. Mikami could have tested the notebook before coming to be sure, or use clippings, especially when he and Light foresaw Near's plan to switch his notebook with a fake. Also Mikami could have brought a gun just to be safe, like Higuchi did when he went out to try and get Matsuda's real hame. It's just doesn't make any sense.

    I don’t mind the second arc. I enjoy many aspects, but I do agree that it feels anticlimactic. That’s the point. With L dead, things come to a halt. Yes, Light achieves so much more in a quicker pace, but the hunt for Kira is dead on arrival. A sudden stop. The process of Near and Mello hunting Kira is so slow, but that’s because they have different approaches to L. Mello was quick, but once Light fought back, everything slowed back down as Mello had to recover and reorganize himself. Near was taking his time, because the goal was to stop Kira. If that meant more deaths, oh well. Better a few die than the world, or the world being enslaved. Neither were childish like L, as L describes himself. They didn’t want to play a game with Kira, so we didn’t get that fun cat and mouse game. L put so much at risk to win his own way. A prideful, childish way. He would rather humiliate Kira and bait him than play it smart. He didn’t give the FBI fake IDs. He told Kira directly many of his plans. He told Light that Misa was arrested, then left without arresting him right then and there. He even hoped that Light had a plan to prove himself innocent, questioning why the deaths didn’t continue once Light had himself arrested. He didn’t want to win immediately, he wanted a show about it. Little did he know.
    Near, despite being a child, didn’t care for any of that. The game was simple. Win. It doesn’t have to be exciting. It doesn’t have to be dramatic. A simple, fair win. That is why killing both Kira and X Kira wouldn’t suffice. He has to prove the evidence prior to the execution, and nothing more. No showboating. Even as extreme as Mello was, he didn’t care for drama, either. He wanted to win fast, only his approach was through far more selfish and criminal acts. He probably would have killed Light if given the chance, without needing to prove his theories that the second L is Kira. It’s actually too bad Mello wasn’t a bigger part of the second arc.
    It doesn’t help that the second arc was rushed in the anime, even the first arc skipped some contexts. Either way, the second arc isn’t terrible, just mostly slow thus dull. That final episode is always pleasant, though, with a melancholy conclusion. That’s why I keep binging it. It will never end if I start from the beginning again.

    • @justjames4
      @justjames4 Год назад +9

      Good analysis, but there's one incorrect sentiment; L wasn't interested in directly making a fool out of Kira and Near isn't more mature than L. They both had the same general strategy of playing a battle of pride while attempting to find indisputable evidence of Kira's identity and crimes to secure an absolute victory against him, even if it meant taking a long time, resulting in more victims of Kira and more opportunities for Kira to kill them. The nature of the victory L aimed for would've been enough for him to indirectly make a fool out of Kira, which is clear when observing Near's victory. Near wasn't directly mocking Light, he was just telling him the facts, while the nature of Light's absolute loss was what hurt his feelings the most.
      Near succeeded because, on top of having the benefit of being the second genius person to attempt to defeat Kira instead of the first, and on top of the benefit of having Mello also causing problems for Kira, Near was more cautious and painstaking than L, which made it practically impossible for Light to even reach him in a way that could benefit him unless he did the galaxy-brain plan that he did, which ended up failing because it relied on people who aren't him acting exactly as planned, meanwhile Near had his own galaxy-brain planning that adapted to his discoveries. L failed because, despite having more experience than both Near and Light, the Death Note was completely new at the time, and he was more willing to make sudden high risk-return actions to make discoveries, which benefited him, but prevented him from meticulously planning everything from start to finish and editing his plan according to discoveries, which allowed Light to have favorable opportunities.
      In a narrative perspective, one of the attributes of L that Mello embodied was his bold actions and sudden behavior, while one of the attributes of L that Near embodied was his intelligence and caution. As you know, L and Mello both died in the end but required Light to think fast, while Near, who strictly thinks before acting, ended up surviving and majorly contributing to defeating Light at his own game. This implies that, L had the correct idea in mind for defeating Light, but a major reason why L lost was due to the fact that he's only one person, and at the time was the only person who could both directly and indirectly challenge Light at his level. Near and Mello being two different people who individually demonstrated certain capabilities that L had that could challenge Light came with the major benefit of Near and Mello being able to separately apply those capabilities against Light, which led to Light's defeat.

    • @justjames4
      @justjames4 Год назад +19

      @@cyberpunk-2O77 In a narrative perspective, Near and Mello are supposed to be caricatures of certain attributes of L, and L had some childish traits, therefore Near and Mello had to narratively inherit those traits. This was to make Near and Mello give off a similar mood as L while still being different than him, and while being ultimately inferior to him individually yet superior to him combined, which was even highlighted by actual dialogue in the series. Near is indeed an example of the "child" prodigy character archetype, but due to his purpose in relation to L, he's not a bland example.
      Near's way of thinking wasn't how you describe. During the time-skip, he had thoroughly researched the Kira case off-screen so he could be caught up with a lot of information so he could have a sufficient reason to deduce that Light was Kira, because despite starting late, he needed to pose a threat to Light. This was similar to L in that, for ambiguous off-screen reasons, he deduced that the members of the Kira investigation team outside of the Yagami family weren't secretly Kira, in a narrative perspective for the sole purpose of making the focus of the story primarily being Light VS L. In a narrative perspective of what concerns Near, he was finishing what L had started, so for the sake of preventing redundancy, a lot of Near's reasoning wasn't shown.
      As for Near discovering the role of Teru Mikami, it seemed like divination in the anime series, but that's because the anime series cut out a lot of the internal dialogue of characters other than Light that was present in the manga series, and this scene was an occurrence of that. With the context of the manga series, it can be inferred that the anime series depicts the evidence and footage spinning around Near as he looked at all of them with superhuman efficiency to figure out that Mikami was Light's helper. Like I wrote before, Near is supposed to be a caricature of L. L was a genius, not an esper.

    I get what you're saying. And much like that game of tennis they played, the dynamic in Light's roles in the 1st and 2nd half are like you see in sports all the time. At the start, the season just started Light is the challenger going for the title (you could say L's a challenger too in terms of the case like two teams trying to win the finals, but L's more so the title holder, world champion, in fact, given his rep as a detective). Challenger Light made it to his title match and won (by TKO I guess but still won😂). Light's now world champion. Who does he topple nex- oh wait, he's the world champ. He's already on top and far from the underdog. Can't go higher than that. You can only do 3 things now. Spread your influence. Bask in your influence. And play defense, cuz you gain no more status winning, but you'll fall from glory if the title challenger beats you. Light playing challenger as the winner makes little sense. And Challengers Near and Mello come through. Mello didn't win his challenge but he definitely put the world champ on the ropes. And Near saw flaws and openings from Mello's fight that nobody else did (cuz it's not like it was pay-per-view. Nobody who saw Light's fight as a challenger is alive or has loose lips.) Now Near's match for the title comes. Light is cocky but Near's research and reads ends with a first round KO to the world champ... and on top of that, the Death Note's confirmed link to Light is the breaking news that the champ used performance enhancing drugs to get through all his fights too.
    It's all downhill from there. Light's career is dead.

    Light's death is perfect for a character like him, but the manga is better, the anime romanticizes him, picturing him like a "poor boy" that's about to die, he sees a version of himself before he picked the death note, maybe feeling regret or missing those innocent times and the last thing he sees is the ghost of L, the only person he consired his equal.
    In the manga Light's death is raw and humilliating and exactly what he deserved, he doesn't get to run away, Ryuk appears and Light thinks Ryuk is going to save him, but Ryuk becomes very demonic while showing Light he wrote his name in his death note, Light screams, curses and cries, while Ryuk laughs, watching him die, he told him he would kill him when things got boring and yeah, he was right, Light became so arrogant and stupid with the years, if Ryuk saved him at that moment, then there would not be anyone else to stop Light, no more action or drama, just a guy writing names all too confortable at the top of the world, and that's boring to watch

    Something that bothered me about the final arc was how L's findings were never passed on to his successors. Yet Mello and Near though halves of a whole, through their own experiments and deductions, pick up clues that took L much longer to discover. It felt cheaper and more contrived. Near gathered evidence concerning the Kira case for three years before he replaced L, but most likely for the sake of avoiding redundancy, this was only stated instead of demonstrated. Mello figured out that Kira had connections to the NPA because he was even more extremely hands-on with his strategies than L was, and the SPK managed to figure out what Mello was doing, so they figured out that Light was Kira in not a long time thanks to Near's genius intelligence. I really love the last arc of Death Note because of its themes. For me, the show wasn't all about Kira Vs L. It was about so much more. I wasn't In love with L and because of that I didn't really mind that much when he lett. Watching how the world changed and how Kira was slowly taking control was fascinating. Mikami and Takada were great. But most importantly for me, it was the nihilistic aura surrounding the show at the beginning. L gave the series a lot of humor, but at the end of the day Death Note its all about one thing: Death. And how Death its equal. When we die we all go to "Nothingness" and that aura was recovered in the last arc.

      @ProfessorViral  3 года назад +15

      I completely agree on that last point; I think the final moments of the anime were legitimately perfect due to that. It could never have ended any other way. And, I probably could appreciate Mikami and Takada more along the lines of Kira's slow grip tightening over the world, but I simply don't think they were strong characters. Maybe that's the point; they're weak because Light has that much influence and a god-like status. But, I didn't enjoy when they were on screen despite that. I think most of the intrigue was in watching L and Light battle it out, while the darkness and contemplation crept in the background. The focus shifted the other way in the final arc, and while I think it's very technically perfect, I have to stand by believing it to be the "worse" arc of the anime. But, thank you for the comment, I enjoy seeing great discussion down here, it means I'm doing something right, and chatting with everyone is one of the best parts of it! : D

    Just like in the tennis match, L in a lot of ways HELPED Light. Light was given constant pressure, and had to work his ass off. His goals grew, his planning and thinking capacity shifted, in a 5 years later world where L survives, it's possible that Light is still his effective, top of his game self. Without evolutionary pressure, there is no way to be prepared for new challenges.
    It fits the theme perfectly, Light is a bonifide genius, at his original level, he could have absolutely kept going after L died. His motivation to grow was from his ego though, and reaching that point made him complacent. His loss began the moment he killed L and started claiming that "he won and there was no one in his way". Absolutely stupid. To think you can influence a planet and ever not have to watch your back.
    I think a lot of celebrities are like this too, talking a big game and actually working extremely hard, but once they reach their peak, they end up falling off and delving into scandal. I have a friend who is extremely talented with this mindset. He already talks about how good it's going to be AFTER he is famous. The whole goal for these types is to meet the needs of their ego, which is amazingly motivating until it's fulfilled. Lights plan was to put himself on the pedestal, but thinking about how to keep himself there does nothing for his complex. He had proven himself already, even entertaining that he could need to protect himself would feel for him like he is diminishing himself.
    Near's timing was perfect. He entered the fray 5 years after Light had fully accepted his throne. Light no longer had to be paranoid, or careful. And just like the most prolific real life serial killers, often having the intelligence to get away with it doesn't mean the discipline necessary to keep doing so will be there as well. Light should have watched Dexter and taken notes. Lmfao

    I love the second half of the series, yes I do enjoy the first half more but I think the second half is perfect as well. Its a fitting continuation for everything that has happened, you cant expect it to be like the first half because the first half was about Light growing and starting his goals, doing anything for it because he knows if he fails their will never be a chance again. In the second half we see the result, the entire world has been changed and we see how it effects everyone, people who do believe and do not believe. You can see the sheer desire to be on top and to have complete dominance and doing whatever it takes with mello. You can see the already achieved power and that holder of power making many movies to ensure their power is protected, no matter how cruel, within Light. And you see the one who sits back and lets everything unfold while also being apart of the cause, and secretly being the one to inforce the moves and not have themself or his forces he the downfall of their opponet, but the opponet themself. So much more I could get into, thank you again for making this video because people are seeming to appreciate it a bit more now.

    Light and L are 2 sides of the same coin.
    It shows how both are acting exactly opposite. Light continuously sacrifices everyone because he views himself a everyone's superior.
    Light exploited Misa and Takada among many others, planning to kill all of them in the end.
    L knew full well he will die, but since he discovered the Death Note, he knew that Near's victory would be an easy win. The supernatural Death Note was the only thing that kept Light's ideology alive. His arrogance has knocked him off his feet numerous times; the Cards Test, the Cell Phone scene. Light lost completely, but then those Shinigami Eyes and memory erasing also memory restoration (when he touched Death Note again) showed up in the story.
    When Near sits with L's mask on, it's symbolism that all Near and Mello did was actually L's doing. L and Near complimented the actions off their team members, while Light perpetually mocked everyone apart from himself, repeatedly slipping.

    I found the later episodes enjoyable because of the great aspects highlighted in this video, plus it still maintained its fantastic way of setting the mood and maintained its animation that I like. I find a story excellent when it's written very skillfully. It was still better when L was alive of course, but I didn't even have a problem with Near replacing him. He's a good successor to L, even though he's not a perfect replacement. He still has the same stoical eccentric genius vibe in his own way. Mostly from a distance, he was finishing what L started, which is why he had a simpler time than L when investigating Light. The fact that Death Note had the courage to let L die made the finale even more suspenseful, since it established that it's willing to let important characters die if it makes sense.
    Anyway, the video is a good analysis of the good aspects of Death Note's later episodes. 👍

If Mellow and Near had more to their character then "L but slightly different," I would like it. But they never became anything more. I love L because we're slowly introduced to him and he's a unique character. Mellow and Near aren't

    • @Belowski69
      @Belowski69 3 года назад +8

      @@ProfessorViral I want to say that the manga is almost as long as the first half. A comment that I left half a year ago shows how much was cut out of the manga from the second half. My math concludes that 10 EPIOSDES WORTH OF CONTENT IS MISSING. In those 10 episodes: Mello gets a full new arc where he does things like threaten the president with a third world war, Light shows more cracks early on, Near explains his views on power and L more, Near shows more emotion, Mello and Near have a scene more together, the ending is different and there is a epiloge that plays one year after Light's death. Hell, NEAR HAS MORE SCREENTIME WHERE WE SEE HIM THAN L IN THE MANGA. But I guess we judge the anime on it's own so lets do that:
      Near and Mello are also without the manga content their own characters and far different from L. Even if I strip all the things the manga adds away, they still hold their own.
      Mello: Do I have to explain this? L and Mello have in common: Both have a massive ego and want to be the best and both are highly intelligent. Mello also has anger issues, is more open about his hate, is more willing to do with things that are roughless and immoral and Mello has a character development where he learns to give up his ego to proof himself as worthy and intelligent. While Mello was willing to give the "final words to Near" and win together with him, L died in Light's arm after lieing to his team several times with his last thoughts being "Light.. is kira.. I was right.. but...." L just cared about being right and being the best. Mello too, but he was able to get past his ego and proofed himself with that. Mello is not only a unquie character who shakes the story up in ways that L never could, but also plays into the theme of giving up power and ego.
      Near: With Near I have to go a little into the manga. Near never had the problem of ego in the first place. Near was a litte sassy (especailly in the manga where he shows more emotion), but he was never arrogant or driven by ego. He was ready to work together with Mello from the start, while L only had Wateri for years and viewd "working with others as having lost." L hates to admit to being wrong. He wished that Light is Kira, he lied to Aizawa to see who he would chose, he wanted to be the smartest in the room and be the best detective. Near openly says "If we make a mistake we just say sorry." and Near also admits that nor he or Mello are as great as L or Light in terms of intelligence. Near being able to admit to being wrong, is even shown really cleverly. In the scene where he throws the darts and miss over and over again, he dosen't show anykind of saddness or shame. He just throws the next one, until he hits bullseye. We even get a fastcut to Light, while Near throws are dart, making it look like he aims at Light and he is his target. While L will only give it one shot and then try to justify why his shot was perfect, Near will throw as many as he needs and is able to say when his shots weren't correct. All Near cares about is solving the puzzle and respecting L. Near also dosen't plan on making Kira's death public, something that L very likely would of done. He also says at the end of the manga "I am no different from you Light. I believe in what I think is right, and believe that to be rightoues." he also has a speech about even if god existed his morals wouldn't be moral just because he is god and that Near would look at them for himself. Near knows that he isn't justice and isn't specail, he even goes as far as putting himself on the same level as Light in that, even if Near finds him pathetic. L thought of himself as justice, the smartest and thought that he is better than Light. There is also the fact that Near has no respect for Light at all, while L at least respected his intelligence. Near isn't as active as Light, L and Mello and isn't nearly (hehe) as smart as Light or L but his lack of ego is his biggest strengh and what makes him unquie. Also at the end of the manga, Matsuda has the theory, that Near KILLED MIKAMI with the Death Note. He wrote in it, that he would take the fake notebook Near made, write everyones name down except Light's and then die later to insure that his plan works. Then he burns the evidence later. If that theory is true is up to the reader. Did Near do it? Is it in his character? He did say in the manga that he can understand people who would use it once or twice for personal gain. Did he just say that to justify himself or was he geniuent? Every other who used the notebook in the show died, even L who wanted someone else to use it. Near would be the only one to get off the hook in the whole story for using the notebook. This could reflect the idea of the winner having the last word and being able to twist the facts to look as justice and right. Or maybe the theory isn't true and Near is truely against using the notebook and wasn't prideful till the end. This whole theory that the manga itself presends adds a whole new layer to Near's character and to the themes of the show. Near is also more honest about his thoughts and is more sassy, smiling a lot and being more playful with the Taskfroce than L in his own way. Once again, stuff that L wasn't able to do.
      I am not saying that L was a bad character, quite the opposite, he is my second favorit after Near. But saying that Near and Mello aren't unquie is just dishonest and unfair to the characters, even if we only take the anime scenes and not the roughly 10 extra episodes of manga. Not to mention their OST slaps.
      Also Light's character change was "too sudden?" If we once again ignore all the manga scenes that go more in depth about Light and his mental state, between the first half and the second are SIX YEARS. At the end of the first we see Light thinking "I am god, I am justice." 6 YEARS later, where he rules the world, after he won against the smartest man on the planet and he is now power hungrier than ever, thinks he can't be beaten and gets careless because of that and buys into his own lies more than even before. Sounds pretty believable to me. And again, this is without some manga scenes that show more cracks in Light's perfect mask before the ending.
      Add all of what I just said to everything you said in the video and I would say we have A VERY solid second half. In my opinion the best part of the story, but since both parts are amazing, I can't blame anyone for liking the first more. Just please don't make the second part look bad. It's really great. And there is so much more I could talk about like: the great mindgames where characters outsmart each other (the whole ending plan from both sides, Near's money escape, everything Mello does with the notebook, Near and Mello getting information out Moggi, all of Near's little traps in talking, etc.) infact the second half has even more planning than the first because we have 3 people fighting against each other instead of 2. And all the side character that get more developed, I could go on.
      In conclusion: While I would still STRONGLY suggest you give the manga a read because it's the best version of the story (even if you miss out on all the great animation, music and voice acting) and because everything after L's death is in my opinion the strongest part of the show. For it's use of themes, the clever mindgames, the change of power and for having Near (who I personally like more than L but that's 100% subjective). You may dislike the second half for whatever reason. You may even think it's the worst of the worst. But by god, Near and Mello aren't "L clones" and the second half has great writing. If it's worse or better than the first is up to the viewer/reader, I would say that objectively they are pretty even but subjectively I go with the second.
      Thanks for reading my rant-

    Ok I just watched it, all 37 episodes, and I’ve concluded that Light shouldn’t have lost. He clearly knew everyone in the room’s names besides Near. Especially Hal Lidner. He did the location reveal trick with Mello’s men where his dad died, why couldn’t he do the same with her and Near’s location. Even after they moved locations. Also Gevanni had to have completely copied a couple years of names perfectly character by character in Japanese in one day despite being from America to make a perfect replica of the death note. Even tho Makumi checked it under a literal microscope every day.
    Also the reasoning behind why Near even suspected Makumi as “X-Kira” was so thin, they brushed over it so quickly.
    Also if all Makumi had to do is look into the room he could’ve used to the countless holes all over the place instead of peaking from the door.
    After L died it seems like the whole thing was over, light had won. Then near and mello were introduced and everything was rushed. I do like the arcs of Matsuda and Aizawa tho they weren’t bad.

    I've always been fascinated by the geniuses presented in the series, whether they be Light, Kira, L, Near, Mello, for they had all one thing in common; their pride in themselves that wants to win. The one thing that set Light/Kira apart from the rest is simply, that he thought more of himself than what he actually was. The others had a huge pride and ego within them but at least they humble themselves to the point of admitting being humans with absurdly high IQ, nothing more nothing less. Light/Kira couldn't be content with that and that was his pride before his humiliating fall, humbled mercilessly by both humans and a godly being, Ryuk. That was the satisfying part of the ending;
    Disliking Near based on his fairly inactive personality doesn't take away the fact that, cooperating with Mello, could rightfully, succinctly and concisely, humble Light to such a defeat that Ryuk considered it over by his own, subjective opinion of the matter translated as him ending Light's life as he always intended to do anyway.

      I agree that it is a battle of pride; who wins over the other? Not conceding to the other results in the winner keeping their pride, but becoming too prideful like Light results in fall due to pride that never was humbled honestly within themselves. L, N, M and, to some extent, BB all admitted their limitation and kept their humble pride even through defeat (like BB), for L hated that he didn't managed to make BB admit that L was right. L didn't care about winning over statistically over BB but it mattered a lot for L to make BB admit that L was right. Keeping pride and not losing face is important to geniuses, and losing face through being caught by their haughty pride is worse than winning through dirty tactics by those geniuses.
      Being humble enough to admit this hig end pride is what made all other than Light win, and not ever admitting human limitation is what makes pride fall to the doom of reputation and self-respect of the too prideful.
      There is a difference between admitting humble limitation of being a man despite genius level of pride and not wanting and not acting on admitting the human limitation of pride.

    THIS is the L/near difference. L used linear and sacrifice tactics to bring Kira down (whom victory ultimately defeated) L put his life on the line over and over again. He knew his man, he wanted proof. To gain proof he needed truth. With Kira putting fake rules into his death note L made a fatal error by taking it as his truth. Three shinigami we used to achieve the win. The one who save Mia, Ryuk who was used, and Rem who was manipulated into saving Mia again sacrificing herself to kill Watari and L. Had Ryuk not been accommodating to Kira he would have been caught long before L revealed himself.

Kira accounted for his capture and planned it out, using Rem to kill both L and Watari. Kira won this battle but ultimately lost because of 2 taunts and this victory.
      Taunt 1, the killing of Taylor on local TV.
      2. His experimenting on modes of death with the note revealing the shinigami as real.
      Now onto N and M, these 2 worked as a team to bring him down. The 2 years between them put Kira into a sense of........ absolute control of everything, he had defeated L, Watari, and Rem in one move! He could do ANYTHING!!! N and M moved around the board testing Kira. Ultimately M sacrificed himself to bit by bit tear down all but Mia as allies to Kira. Those two years he became too attached to Mia and refused to sacrifice her, instead turning to a man that in his arrogance left the death note exposed enough to be swapped out revealing Light as Kira.
      Kira,L,M,N are to a one genius level intellects. L had his man, he caught him fair and square. Kira then used an external entity REM to bust free of the lock. Last successors M and N played off each other, one dying to put Kira in checkmate.

    There is a four year time skip after L's death and the first time we see Near and Mello.
    It's during this time that Mello joins the mafia and rises to the top and Near has to re-start the KIRA investigation FROM SCRATCH.
    People think that Near "cheated" because he used L's information but this is not true. Everything L learned was purposely deleted by Watari to prevent the info leaking to Kira.
    The only thing Near knew was 1. Kira exists and 2. The real L is dead and while L did prove that Kira existed by the time Near is introduced into the story the existence of Kira
    is just blatantly obvious to even the general public which is of course what Light wanted since he wants to be a god. L's death was the bigger clue.
    I think Near suspected the second L of being Kira from the very beginning. It was just a matter of finding concrete evidence to prove that in order to "win the game".

    What's always pissed me off about DeathNote is the Light did not kill L! He got someone to do it for him on such basis he should have been terrified that there were 2 people at or around L's level coming for his life his kingdom! This should have sent Light in to a type of fight for his life that dwarfed his fight with L; but they didn't make the story that way. It was written to slowly make Light more incapable even if he tried. Lets remember these 2 children were "imperfect" L's so if we saw prime Light like in season one, but now recognized these people as legitimate threats he might've faired better. On the other hand simply because he couldn't out smart L (L would never give his real name to anyone and was smart enough to keep away from those with the eyes of the shinigami) without giving up half his life but he didn't want to so there we have it. Light lost because the story required him to lose or more like wanted him to lose. Now I'm no genius but if I had the ability to kill with a book you could damn well believe I'd never trust it with anyone else Light didn't either but the story conveniently forced him to rely on independent variables another marker of his down fall. In other word the: cunning skilled capable conniving tinkering maniacal Light Yagami left it up to Luck. Which I will always call bullshit on he'd never leave it up to luck. Unless he could accurately guess what might happen like he always wears a watch, or how like any innocent person wrongfully imprisoned he would try and prove his innocence or if your drowning you'll try to swim and save yourself it just makes sense. Watching Light post L is like watching Einstien get Alzheimer's. It hurts them sure but it hurts you more because at some point your the only one able to see its getting worse.

    Honestly the manga did that arc way better. The ending was different, it wasn't as rushed, although most of the details were the same the anime skipped over a lot of information which is a big part of what made the story so good in the first place. As for Near, a lot of people dislike him because he's basically a discount L but I always felt that that wasn't fair, L was over 30, Near wasn't even 17 yet, of course he's going to feel like a lesser, and personally I feel like the approach of Near + Mello make a potentially better L than the original was a better approach than if they had just randomly thrown in a successor that was just as good or better than L anyway. In short, I think it was a more than satisfactory arc. But definitely not as good as the original.

    I did enjoy the final arc the most out of the entire anime. Also where the hell are two little L's in the terrible adaptation that gave me nightmares?

      I don't like how "two little L's" sounds at all lol

    I think the fact that Near is so hated and Mello actually had a decent fanbase is proof that the fans never really cared about a battle of intellect it was always about the pride for most people, they wanted to know who could win not who should

    Give the second season:
    1. A bigger focus on wammys house.
    2. A bigger focus on the transformation of the world.
    3. A greater amount of episodes.

      Honestly just more episodes and it probably would have been fine. They were making another battle of the minds in half the time, which just wasn't possible, and made Lights devolution feel rushed

    i actually ended up finishing only the manga for this series and not the anime funny enough. honestly i didn't feel much of a drastic shift when reading the manga and idk if that's up to what was lost in adaptation or if the second arc just worked for me so i wasn't jarred by it like many other people were. who knows but it's interesting to think about

      Exactly! Makers went overboard with their obsession to make near win in the end. They should've written something atleast believable.
