Just set this up with my car and it works! Also set my 2step to about 4500ish. One thing I noticed that kinda bugs me tho is that it makes your throttle kinda janky...whacky. For example, if I slightly just press on my gas pedal, it acts like it wants to stall. Give it a little more and its fine. Unless this is just the ECU learning process. Well see how she is in the next couple days.
I'm still running catted in both my UEL Header and aftermarket Hi-Flow Catted frontpipe until I get through emissions testing. And just in case, I don't want to wear out/damage my cats prematurely because catalytic converters made those parts a bit more expensive than un-catted and I want the to last. So I don't think I'll be running this cool pop/backfire tune yet. Current "Smog Legal" Set-up ~FT-86Speedfactory Catted UEL ~Perrin Overpipe ~Motiv Concepts Hi-Flow Catted Frontpipe ~TRD Catback Exhaust ~OFT 93 Oct Stage 2 UEL Tune (probably not a smog legal tune Lol) Once I replace my current set-up with a new, a lot cheaper un-catted UEL Header (CNT Racing V2) and frontpipe/testpipe (Invidia/Tsudo), I'm excited to see how much more rumble, pop volume, and afterfire/backfire flames I can get out of my exhaust system! Especially with a modifying the ignition timing an OFT tune, to the pop/backfire tune! Haha Not caring much for the performance aspect at the moment, but wanting to enhance my driving experience and overall enjoyment of my car. Lol

So I able to do this for the stage 2+ tune but the stage 2+ with e85 has slightly different numbers on base timing B should I still put in -8 between 2,200 and 5,200 or should I input a lower number. Thanks, Darren

Sadly yes, without an oft you can't tune the car. There are other tuning options out there (ecutek for example) but they don't offer the same simple expandability and would require a Dyno/road tune by someone(costing more money). The biggest benefit of the oft is the off the shelf tunes that allow tunes for certain mods at the touch of a screen. You can get them cheaper used (100 or so less than new) on Facebook markets and the ft86club forum.

today I installed this tune to my 86. Funny thing is that it doesn't work when you lift off the throttle, but lifting your foot and feather it slightly. Then you get the pops. Any ideas on why this may happen?
I followed the same instructions but the thing is i got to feather the accelerator a lil bit so it can work any tips on how to do it without having to feather the accelerator
Will this work with the OTS Stage 2 E85 tune? Because that's what I'm using right now and since the car has to dump more fuel in to the engine since it's E85, I was wondering if this video will work with the E85 tune.
+TheSteve591 I'd have to check the e85 map vs the "normal" fuel map and see if there's a large difference. Theoretically, it should work fine just the values might be a little different.

So I'm off now and did a little digging, it seems like it should be okay but I wouldn't drop it down as low (at least the first time) i'd try with -4 or -5 and get a feel for how the car takes it. Other than that, should be good to go. If you decide to give it a go, let me know how it goes i'd love to know as it's something I plan on doing in the very near future ;)
Bisofication I've never really seen anyone go that low, one thing that will help would be going catless. Either a catless frontpipe or header (or both) would help achieve a much more significant pop.

So they only part left stock for my exhaust is the front pipe. I just drove around for like 15 mins after putting on tune and didn't hear anything did i possibly fuck something up? (magnaflow catback/and 1320 uel headers and 1320 overpipe)

I set this tune up exactly as you did and I did get the pops but the annoying stutter came back when slowing to a stop. Is this normal or is there a way to fix this? Currently stage 1 with just a Nameless single exit axle back, next week I'll have the Invidia front pipe if that helps any. Everything else is stock.

this might be a bit late since this video was posted 3 years ago, but does this tune with just stage one (so both cats on the vehicle) destroy the cats?
You would need to locate your CAL ID using your open flash tablet. With the tablet connected to the PC, you can use open flash manager to view the CAL ID (under the download data section) or with the tablet connected to the car, go to information and then My car and you should see your CAL ID there.
+jesse ver Good question. So if you lift off throttle normally it won't pop. Of you slowly let off the throttle then it will. So it's more of a touch for effect kinda thing.
Degenerate Motoring ah ok. because on my gc8 my tuner also installed pops n bangs but he did it so that when the revs are high jst feather touch the throttle (literally a milimeter) and that causes loud pops n bangs with great flames. im just wondering if its the same as im buying another gc8 sti in another country and want it to pop n bang like mad. is this the same for all subarus?

What changes would you make if you wanted the pops to start at a higher RPM rather than 3000? say 3500-4000 or so? incase I'm driving with a cop behind me and need to speed up without the car popping in his face.
hi , I recently installed a catback exhaust and a catless uel header on my frs and i wanted to tune it for pops. i followed your direction exactly but i haven’t gotten any pops. mine is AT not sure if that effects anything. been driving it around for a week now hopefully it’ll eventually kick in and been thinking of going back in and changing the value from -8 to -10 but don’t want to risk any damage to the car
Do you get the “tunes and definitions” when you first upload the tablet onto the computer? Once you read your ecu for the first time and then use a computer to get the information and add tunes.. is it those files you use in romraider ?

+Michael Tawdrous 1. While I have no personal experience with the Open flash header, tons of people seem to run them without issues so I'd say it's worth it. 2. Technically, yes but you'd get little to no benefit from running the stage 2 tune. If you have a catback exhaust and intake mods with a stock header, you can run stage 2 EL... I followed his step by step, but when I clicked file and selected the tune I was going to edit like you said it, it says error however mine says “invalid byte 1 of 1 -byte UTF -8 sequence.” Any idea on what this means?

Probably a dumb question, but is it at all possible to safely do a lighter burble tune for catted systems? I know full pops and bangs can blow a cat. But I'm hoping to give my exhaust a little more character with a little burble.

It could potentially damage your catalytic converters and the effect wouldn't be as loud or frequent. I'd recommend at least a catless frontpipe. Thanks for watching!
depends on how restrictive your exhaust is and if you have a cat my car has no cat a little restrictive stock exhaust but theres a small leak from where you can hear some pops if you key bang ;)
I’m a bit confused, the first 4 tunes when first downloading the tunes off of OFT website the first 4 end in bin but the last says xml. Is the xml the one I should download ?
So In the beginning how do you know which ECU definition manager your supposed to pick? Or just select exactly what you just picked? And then since I'm on UEL I just pick Stage 2 93 OCT for the corresponding bin file? Also How come you put -8 for a few of the ranges but not all and at -9 like on the thread? +91Jefri Great questions, so to begin with the definitions, you'd want to match that to the CAL number you get from the Open Flash Manager (which will be the same for the bin file you want to edit). The reason my edits are a little different than the original thread is because I personally didn't want to change anything in the lower and higher RPM ranges. The reason I chose the number I did is arbitrary... I just chose it because it was close to the original post, just not as aggressive. I've seen people do -12 or more but I wouldn't advise that personally. If you've got anything else you need to know let me know. Thanks for watching!
Yeah figured it was to make it less intense that what the other guy was running and be on the safe side. Guess I'll play around and see what suits me best, sorry only thing I didn't understand was still the CAL number since I don't have the tablet on me atm to figure out where I can find that. But I'll get my OFT later on and see where I can find it on the openflash manager and ask again if I can't find it then. Thanks again, you've been a big help !
+91Jefri cool cool. The manager can be found on Open Flash performance's site and once it updates and you read the ECU info it should give two columns of info and the CAL is in the right hand side near the middle I believe. Let me know if you need anything once you're up and running!
Degenerate Motoring so just installed today and took it for a ride, rpm was acting weird at idle like dropping to 500rpm and felt like car was going to shut off. Going to see if anything changes, any experience with this problem?
+91Jefri the BRZ sometimes has a idle thing like that, when the AC is running and even more noticable if you have it in the feet/dash blow mode and/or max AC on. The OFT tune should have increased the idle to like 700-800 to fix that, it's kinda strange you're getting down to 500 still after flashing the tune.
I saved a copy of the 93 oct from OFT and from ft86 that was sent to edit like you did but I have the stock exhaust and don't hear the same pops. I'm guessing maybe the stock ELH and mufflers on the exhaust are muffling most of it which is a slight bummer.
You're completely right. Both the stock muffler, but mainly the catalytic converter, will limit the pops heavily. A catless frontpipe will allow for more audible pops along with a catback exhaust. You can try changing the number to -12 as some have mentioned that helps with the stock exhaust. I have a catless frontpipe and very small muffler (stock header).

I followed these exact steps and it doesn’t let me do anything, it just shows a blank screen, right now I’m currently on stage 2 +e85 and it only lets me do it on my stock tune, I need help
ive got stock headers, with a hi flow catted front pipe and fujitsubo authorise r, and it pops and crackles nicely, i think i'll bump it up to start at around 3000 to 5200 as the pops are a bit ridiculous when im just putting around town

Update: After driving a couple miles I started getting more pops haha, I could get even more I bet until I install my UEL header from JDL
Hectic GT86 Niiiice being catless seems to have a huge effect on the pops as well so I'd say it'll be much better with the header for sure!

I have no headers, but I do have a high flow cat front pipe and a Perrin catback if I use this tune will it pop?

+Michael Tawdrous 1. While I have no personal experience with the Open flash header, tons of people seem to run them without issues so I'd say it's worth it.
2. Technically, yes but you'd get little to no benefit from running the stage 2 tune. If you have a catback exhaust and intake mods with a stock header, you can run stage 2 EL... Purely stock I'd stick with stage 1 tune for now. If you have any other questions let me know. Thanks for watching!

I followed his step by step, but when I clicked file and selected the tune I was going to edit like you said it, it says error however mine says “invalid byte 1 of 1 -byte UTF -8 sequence.” Any idea on what this means?

Hey all. Just wondered if you had ever updated your tune for E85 to add the backfire and pops on it. I just switched over and I'm not sure how similar E85 is to regular petrol gas. Thanks man.
I run the tune with e85 with no issues. Just change the same cells shown in the video to -7 and you're good to go!
Probably a dumb question, but is it at all possible to safely do a lighter burble tune for catted systems? I know full pops and bangs can blow a cat. But I'm hoping to give my exhaust a little more character with a little burble.

It could potentially damage your catalytic converters and the effect wouldn't be as loud or frequent. I'd recommend at least a catless frontpipe. Thanks for watching!

A muffler delete will not cause anything other than a louder exhaust. You would still need a tune. Thanks for watching!

Cristian Sanchez it should work, I think it won’t pop as much. And for the flames you need full cat less
depends on how restrictive your exhaust is and if you have a cat my car has no cat a little restrictive stock exhaust but theres a small leak from where you can hear some pops if you key bang ;)
I’m a bit confused, the first 4 tunes when first downloading the tunes off of OFT website the first 4 end in bin but the last says xml. Is the xml the one I should download ?
The .xml is the definition file you need to open the .bin files in Romraider. You want to download all 5 files.

So In the beginning how do you know which ECU definition manager your supposed to pick? Or just select exactly what you just picked? And then since I'm on UEL I just pick Stage 2 93 OCT for the corresponding bin file? Also How come you put -8 for a few of the ranges but not all and at -9 like on the thread? Apologies on the many questions I just want to make sure I don't end up making a huge mistake, Thanks :)
+91Jefri Great questions, so to begin with the definitions, you'd want to match that to the CAL number you get from the Open Flash Manager (which will be the same for the bin file you want to edit). The reason my edits are a little different than the original thread is because I personally didn't want to change anything in the lower and higher RPM ranges. The reason I chose the number I did is arbitrary... I just chose it because it was close to the original post, just not as aggressive. I've seen people do -12 or more but I wouldn't advise that personally. If you've got anything else you need to know let me know. Thanks for watching!
Yeah figured it was to make it less intense that what the other guy was running and be on the safe side. Guess I'll play around and see what suits me best, sorry only thing I didn't understand was still the CAL number since I don't have the tablet on me atm to figure out where I can find that. But I'll get my OFT later on and see where I can find it on the openflash manager and ask again if I can't find it then. Thanks again, you've been a big help !
+91Jefri cool cool. The manager can be found on Open Flash performance's site and once it updates and you read the ECU info it should give two columns of info and the CAL is in the right hand side near the middle I believe. Let me know if you need anything once you're up and running!
Degenerate Motoring so just installed today and took it for a ride, rpm was acting weird at idle like dropping to 500rpm and felt like car was going to shut off. Going to see if anything changes, any experience with this problem?
+91Jefri the BRZ sometimes has a idle thing like that, when the AC is running and even more noticable if you have it in the feet/dash blow mode and/or max AC on.
The OFT tune should have increased the idle to like 700-800 to fix that, it's kinda strange you're getting down to 500 still after flashing the tune.
I saved a copy of the 93 oct from OFT and from ft86 that was sent to edit like you did but I have the stock exhaust and don't hear the same pops. I'm guessing maybe the stock ELH and mufflers on the exhaust are muffling most of it which is a slight bummer.
You're completely right. Both the stock muffler, but mainly the catalytic converter, will limit the pops heavily. A catless frontpipe will allow for more audible pops along with a catback exhaust. You can try changing the number to -12 as some have mentioned that helps with the stock exhaust. I have a catless frontpipe and very small muffler (stock header).

I followed these exact steps and it doesn’t let me do anything, it just shows a blank screen, right now I’m currently on stage 2 +e85 and it only lets me do it on my stock tune, I need help
ive got stock headers, with a hi flow catted front pipe and fujitsubo authorise r, and it pops and crackles nicely, i think i'll bump it up to start at around 3000 to 5200 as the pops are a bit ridiculous when im just putting around town
