Going from memory here, but in the Metallica biography written by Joel McIver, it was explained that Burton and the guys from Anthrax were having breakfast after a night of partying. Burton was hungover and hadn't had much sleep, so he was running very low on energy. The guys from Anthrax asked him "What does James shout in Master of Puppets right before the solo?" because lets be real, it isn't very clear on the recording. Cliff, in his not-so-sharp state, didn't quite catch the question but instead offered pancakes to them. "Pancakes?" he said. And thus the joke was born.

They may not be headbanging or moshing but Metallica knew what they were getting into when they played this show, they just wanted to show people a different kind of music that they might have never listened to and now maybe do.
