I think the most genuinely impressive thing about Joseph Kucan's performance as Kane throughout the entire franchise is that he's not even a full time actor. His main job while working on all the games was actually in being the Casting Director at Westwood. It's just that when they were making Tiberium Dawn, they just had him do some placeholder footage as Kane for reference while they searched for someone else to play the character. At some point down the line though, they just said "Fuck it" and let Kucan play the part full time because no one else could do as good of a job at playing the character. And thus one of the most iconic villain performances in gaming history was born.
I know I’m a year late, but that’s actually really interesting. I’ve been a C&C fan as long as I can remember, and I still learn something new every now and then. Now all we need is the band to get back together for Tiberian Incursion.
He wasn't a full-time actor then, but today he is, for the most part. He founded "A Public Fit" theatre company in Vegas, and now does acting and directing full time. Through his podcasts he seems to be passionate about it too.

You can't forget about the 'EVA' from Red Alert. His voice is so iconic (RIP). Westwood did a great job with all of their games actually. I would say all of them are the best, because it is impossible for me to pick my favourite. They all match their respective games perfectly. CABAL is the most intimidating though.
I met him in Utrecht at the Free Record Shop a couple of years ago, he was there to promote C&C 4 (not a clue why you would want to come there but hey i didn't mind xD) and talked with him about 10 minutes after giving him a pre-birthday present because it was his bd 2 days later.
I love how at 13:49 and 21:58 variations of No Mercy from the original C&C is played. I feel it really ties the feeling together with the original game in a subtle way. I think Frank Klepacki did this brilliantly, just like he did in the Yuri's Revenge track Drok where he after 56 seconds introduces the theme from original Hell March at 4 min 25 sec into that track.
I used to play the Nod campaign solely because of Monika Schnarre. Also, it's quite impressive how politically relevant and prophetic this campaign's storyline is.

The mammoth cutscene is so sick, actually a lot of Tiberium cutscenes reside in my mind in childhood, and I often play my own cutscenes of battles between GDI and NOD. The depressing mysterious music and atmosphere really immerse myself into the game, same as Max Payne with Rainy, Snowy New York City
GDI Sergeant: Sir, i don't think humans has made this Michael McNeil: PULL BACK, SOLDIER! Slavik: Locate that tacitus, soldier...or i bury your team in that hole! You see the difference here? As McNeil being reasonable and values every soldier, Slavik is ruthless and cold, and have no toleration of the failure. Pure evil or devotion to the cause? I don't know tbh
Dude.. watching Hassan get his throat cut like that at 7 years old was intense as fuck. At 25 it’s still a damn good scene. I wish more games would do live action stuff like this
One of my favorite missions is getting Slavic out of prison and using the forces provided. Using the Cyborg Commando was just amazing at the time, and it gave me one heck of a grin on my face.
I still love the style here. The uniforms, the props, the atmosphere... it's like watching a really cool sci-fi movie. Then C&C 3 happened, and it made everything more casual and contemporary - no more cool uniforms, no armors, NOD turned into straight up gangstas running around in hoodies and sneakers, what a joke. And then, C&C 4. Which shouldn't exist. I'm kinda glad Slavik died before the shit show started. He lived in the Brotherhood's golden age. If he lived long enough to witness what this once mighty organization turned in, he'd most likely kill himself.
I'll be honest I'd play CNC 4 rather than Red Alert 3 because it is more of a "chick flick", a cheap tactic that EA used to sell it. The best thing about it is when Tim Curry played the Soviet Premier. CNC 3 can be fun although I agree with people when that say it was good but not that great. Don't get me wrong, CNC 4 was EA's attempt to monopolize the E-Sports and the plot line was weak. Joe Kucan stands out in CNC 4 despite the weak plot.
@@PaiSAMSEN The woman is a high ranking officer and a media guru. Let's just stay professional and call it a foreign affair. That guy sure received some divination!
I mean if you read up on the NOD climate at the time it makes sense. There were 4 splinter factions of NOD after Kane disappeared. GDI obviously had control of one of them (Marcion) and the only man who truly was loyal to Kane and willing to fight for him against 4 factions of NOD forces claiming their own leaders were the true messiah; let's just say it makes sense somebody got to Slavick somehow.

I tell you. Kane is wonderfully charismatic and Joe only got better with it. The Kane's Wrath expansion for C&C3 really drove home his acting chops and talent. The fact he seems to have barely aged since 1995 just makes it all the more impressive.
The Philadelphia blowing up, Kane's speech and than the earth turning green? Along with that soundtrack? This is the apocalypse in it's coolest Version!!! PEACE THROUGH POWER
Someone should create a 4th alternative timeline game that continues after this. It will be interesting to discover the life on earth after the divination. What will the relationship between GDI and NOD be if humans survived and evolved as Kane expected? WIth that super Tiberium bomb, the Scrin is bounded to show up
There's so much more they could do with the series. The Tiberium universe is ripe with potential to be explored and it's a criminally underrated story.
In principle based on the other events of the series, after the divination missile the Scrin should have showed up in a matter of months or a few short years if Kane himself didn't find a way to contact them himself. Assuming Kane somehow wasn't in the picture at that point, I don't think even GDI and NOD together could have stopped them with so little time to prepare. This ending is the "Earth gets farmed" ending.

I miss Tiberian Sun so much. All the actors in the FMV cutscenes in this game really gave it their all and it shows. It doesn't feel corny or forced. It really feels like an actual movie. The later games seemed to really miss that and got a lot more corny and the dialogue just felt so forced. The exception being Red Alert 3 but that was supposed to be funny. Joe Kucan deserves an Oscar for his performance as Kane.
15:55 the Nod soldier was a mutant who lost friends in the GDI attack then gave the Defense Initiative pilot a nonverbal expression of regret and vengeance
Wish we could have seen a continuation of Westwood’s story from this game. I’d have liked to have seen what they had in store when Kane turned on his devoted yet gullible Nod sheep and whether GDI and Nod end up fighting Kane, possibly with or without the Scrin. Although they kinda did that with the ending of Firestorm, where Kane and Cabal are the secret team the whole time which explains they lack of dialogue between each other in TS. I’d like to think Kane has the Chronosphere from Red Alert and has been travelling through history with it, trying to set himself as a God, even though he’s some power hungry guy... possibly the biblical Cain who killed whoever went back to that era with the Chronosphere and stole it from them. I don’t think he’d be an alien. I think he may have tried to fuck with the Scrin who probably saw him as person of interest from afar and wanted his Chronosphere or something, or he stupidly contacted them and they just saw an opportunity to assimilate Earth as their own.
When I was little, I couldn't play the campaign because of the scary as hell dead Nod guy at the start. I literally started freaking out and unplugged my computer. But, it still was one of my favorite C&C games... For skirmish.

"Define favourable outcome, Kabal."
"THEY ALL DIE."
"That'll do."

Awwww, you cutie ^w^
Kane's comeback was fucking amazing.
I happened to have met Joseph Kucan (Kane) in real life :D The man is incredible!
Where did you met him?
I met him in Utrecht at the Free Record Shop a couple of years ago, he was there to promote C&C 4 (not a clue why you would want to come there but hey i didn't mind xD) and talked with him about 10 minutes after giving him a pre-birthday present because it was his bd 2 days later.
Yes I did! Back to back pose, it was a legendary moment :D
Reading it now, it's awesome, thanks mate!
Jejking i would have screamed KANE LIVES IN DEATH!!!
Yeah, Frank did that a lot with the C&C soundtracks
Interesting. Been listening to these music tracks for over 20 years by this point but I've never noticed that before o_o
I used to play the Nod campaign solely because of Monika Schnarre.
Also, it's quite impressive how politically relevant and prophetic this campaign's storyline is.
The C&C games really predicted a lot of modern day warfare and political happenings quite well.
@@ugiustuskeiserus8066 I see no political or military tactic here that haven't been used IRL for millenia. Perhaps this is where _you personally_ first saw them and therefore naively assumed that the game devs invented them.
What I love the most in Westwood games. The occasional "I shoot this guy because of reasons you don't understand. I'll just say "Traitor" and leave the rest to your imagination."
Not quite... It was heavily implied that the guy who got shot, framed Slavik in cooperation with Hasan and allowed Slavik to be captured.
Also, "Instead of allowing you to detonate this C4 device when you're good and ready, YOU HAVE FIVE SECONDS TO GTFO THE WAY!"

GDI Sergeant: Sir, i don't think humans has made this
Michael McNeil: PULL BACK, SOLDIER!
6:50 Best C&C cut scene ever. My opinion.
+Scott Wylie
Best cut scene in any video game! It sends chills down my spine every time i watch it.
Agreed, best C&C cutscene by far! I love how "over the top" Anton Slavik is acted too :)
Dude.. watching Hassan get his throat cut like that at 7 years old was intense as fuck. At 25 it’s still a damn good scene. I wish more games would do live action stuff like this
Like a new hitler.
there's also 23:00 :D
One of my favorite missions is getting Slavic out of prison and using the forces provided. Using the Cyborg Commando was just amazing at the time, and it gave me one heck of a grin on my face.
Nods armor was so cool in this one
I still love the style here. The uniforms, the props, the atmosphere... it's like watching a really cool sci-fi movie. Then C&C 3 happened, and it made everything more casual and contemporary - no more cool uniforms, no armors, NOD turned into straight up gangstas running around in hoodies and sneakers, what a joke. And then, C&C 4. Which shouldn't exist.
I'm kinda glad Slavik died before the shit show started. He lived in the Brotherhood's golden age. If he lived long enough to witness what this once mighty organization turned in, he'd most likely kill himself.
Andrii Svystun
Well, he was killed by a traitor in Kane’s Wrath DLC.
i hate ea for that
ea should go bankrupt FOR RUINING THE BEST GAME EVER
i also like to think of nod as an cult because they use sneaky attacks and guerrila style combat
Andrii Svystun EA is like Amazon. They both suck.
I've always been a NOD soldier, but if I wasn't, 21:00 would immediately change my fate.

I always thought he said something like Ass coo. Made me think he was talking about the Alaskan eskimos for some reason.
Slavik is so hilariously intense in some scenes, and the thumbnail.
@FuckYouAllToPieces was a fucken badass. It is revealed in "The Wrath of Kane" expansion that he was killed. Which was extremely sad to find out.
@Artuurs Z. very true. I actually hated that explanation. I would have been happier if they just said he retired to some island.
@Artuurs Z.
How?
Slavik is awesome and it'd be amazing if he was indeed brought back, but it kinda makes sense. Remember, not everyone's immortal like Kane.
This game was way ahead of its time
7m20 - 8m44 onwards, one of the best cinematics in gaming ,.... ever ! (if you're a NOD fan at least!)
Having read no spoilers, this was a great suprise after the end of C&C 1.
Anton Slavik is such a cool Protagonist-Villain. The way he and his crew act seem like he'd be the hero of a cool Star-Trek esque space show but he's also a ruthless and zealous dude.

With the remaster of Tiberian Dawn I really hope they remaster this game. Its fantastic
I tell you. Kane is wonderfully charismatic and Joe only got better with it. The Kane's Wrath expansion for C&C3 really drove home his acting chops and talent. The fact he seems to have barely aged since 1995 just makes it all the more impressive.
Would be funny, if he really would be some kind of immortal demi-god, then it isn't acting on his part, just being natural lol.
The Philadelphia blowing up, Kane's speech and than the earth turning green? Along with that soundtrack? This is the apocalypse in it's coolest Version!!! PEACE THROUGH POWER
Slavik was so badass so sad he's dead killed outscreen in a single sentence in Kane's Wrath...
I still like how Kane is watching through the screen as if there's no camera and he can litterly see through the screen
What I also love about the Nod cutscenes is the black humour in them. :D
Dont think I truly appreciated how good this all was until later in life.
Control the media.... Control the mind
Kane really did predict 2020
Someone should create a 4th alternative timeline game that continues after this. It will be interesting to discover the life on earth after the divination. What will the relationship between GDI and NOD be if humans survived and evolved as Kane expected? WIth that super Tiberium bomb, the Scrin is bounded to show up
I am still mad to this day that Westwood didn't give us a Mutant campaign.
There's so much more they could do with the series. The Tiberium universe is ripe with potential to be explored and it's a criminally underrated story.
@@ugiustuskeiserus8066 I say leave it the way it is. Too many stupid things can happen if the series is continued.

Tiberian Sun is my favorite in the series. CABAL’s voice is just awesome!
I think they shold make a movie of this
Lol, it basically already is seeing as how all the cutscenes are live-action.
When i close my eyes and hear James Earl Jones voice, i imagine that it is Lord Vader leads GDI
15:55 the Nod soldier was a mutant who lost friends in the GDI attack then gave the Defense Initiative pilot a nonverbal expression of regret and vengeance
Slavik: "Locate that tacitus soldier or I will bury your team in that hole" brutal.
