  • Just a quick test for Australia Post just in case one of their merry men decide to attempt to destroy a radio. We find videos proving the radios worked prior to delivery people using well packed delivery boxes for footballs are proving very useful if a claim is ever needing to be made. Be sure to ask for insurance if goods are over $100 of value. Thankfully, 98% of parcels make it through with no problems but its good to have evidence if the worst happens. cheers brenton vk3cm jdw229 pls subscribe and also feel free to join us on Facebook at Aussie Radio Pickers or vk ham sales and service anytime.

I still have my FT-290R after 41 years, it needs a new display and a tune-up, I used to drive an Alinco 30 watt amplifier with it.

Just watched this video as I have a ft290 arriving soon from a ebay purchase, it has a faulty display its going black, do you still have any displays left as you said in the video, if not I am going try and fix it ,yes fix it. it turns out that the polarizer can become unstuck and give the black effect , I saw a video where one was repaired by peeling off the old polarizer and a new one applied to a display to an Icom radio.

"Mutek" was the Name of the 'new frontend', without the gap in the word! (Not "Mu-Tek")
It was a reliable 'update' to the radio, expensive, but easy to buildt inside the radio and good for SSB and FM, but not without some minor 'bells and whistles', because if the more than needed input-power, now from the antenna port. It brings you more then +15 to +20dB of gain, and nobody inserted a PI-style damping-part behind an amplifier! (When I remember right, it was a dual-gate MOS-Fet (BF-960/981or similar) in the first stage, good for +25db or so, ... ! Noise-figure
