- In this weeks video we take a quick look at the Yaesu FT290r arp radio.
This radio is labeled somerkamp .
its a all mode 2m radio running 2.5W should be good for qrp work up hills

This was my first proper rig. My first setup was a three channel Pye Cambridge ex taxi rig. I loved the FT290R, and had great memories watching you un box it!
Your be surprised how far you can get on 2w ssb when I got it I thought it was going to be a paper weight but I was wrong it’s a great rig
@@2j4ez Thanks for the reply. I did a lot of portable operation with that rig in Crawley (callsign G6COQ) in 1982. So you can imagine the locals finding it very bizarre to have some kid walking around talking to someone on a radio!

nice one Jez, got one of these in decent nick although the case had been resprayed! Works well though
tomorrow is 2m night ill go out and about and see if I can make contact with anyone. so far the audio Ive herd from it is really good im well pleased with it

Ah lonely old radio Jez That one looks like its in nice condition as well. I remember when every one had one of those.
I spoke to my friend this morning Tim (2e0vbo) and he said its a G1 starter kit now I no what he means thanks for watching
@@2j4ez hahaha hes right g6 and g1 haha it was the first thing every one bought as soon as they got their licence mate. Does that 1 have the Mu-Tec pre amp fitted?
not sure how would I check? all ive got is the radio and mic haven't even taken it out of the leather case as yet
@@2j4ez I cant remember if its under the top or bottom cover now Jez. Im sure there is loads of info on the net for that board. But even if it doesnt have 1 those cheap Chinese pre amps are probs better now any way.

Cute radio. Will it receive SSTV from the ISS? Amazed there was 2m activity!
it does 2m all mode. it will receive sstv from the iss no problems . its running 2.5w on the stock antenna just worked Kent and Leicestershire on 2.5w stock antenna 2m SSB

yes ive been looking at these on eBay for a while and decided to get one so far I like the audio on it. tomorrow is 2m calling so ill go out and about and see if I can make contact
Hey. I've the chance to buy one FT-290R for about 100€. Is this radio usable with stock antenna and stock power (2,5W)? Thank you dr op.
Yes very useable on the stock antenna and power I’ve managed to clear 101 miles on 2.5w and with a arrow antenna managed to clear 166miles no problems
