999/- Bucks omg!... Its too expensive for a 480p device... I would rather prefer a phone over this for GPS navigation, with a mirror mount holder..

It is pricey. Is it worth the convenience of not using the tablet? In our JK I use an iPad. Similar setup to what you had. While not equal, this seems easier to get some of the info you want.

Too expensive for a device that is going to be quickly dated (if it isn't already with 480p) Not to mention when one function quits working (telemetry, relay circuitry etc.),the whole device will need to be replaced. I am more in favor or multiple items that have a lower per item replacement cost, especially in rugged dirty environments.

My top three features from watching this video would be:
    1) CarPlay
    2) vehicle telemetry
    3) switch/circuit controller.
Thanks for your preliminary review, it gives me goals for 2021’s upgrade.
That pricetag is a big pill to swallow though. We’ll see what the future holds.

Let me say one thing. Very big thank you. well informed review. I have been researching this head unit for my Tacoma. I am glad to know the resolution wasn’t that great. I was wondering. I’m going to hold off and hopefully alpine updates. In the long run. That head unit is amazing. I currently have JBL where crutchfield site said it wouldn’t work. Hopefully that will be updated too. And again. Thank you.

Hey Kevin, I bought this same unit except with the Tacoma trim package, (+$200). This unit was very impressive in my local dealers showroom, but I'm not sure I got what I thought I was getting. The apps available are very limited. I agree with your negative thoughts about your Alpine unit. I would like to know how to "jailbreak" it to show movies via AmazonVideo, etc. The air in my tires are 1-2#s off from my very accurate digital hand held gauge, (maybe not the head unit fault, but sensors). After two months, I'm still trying to figure out how to do things. It's very annoying to have to go through all the levels to get back to the music I was listening to before I shut the engine off, every time. I'm hoping that all the stuff I can't figure out is just a learning curve and it will get better, but right now, I don't think I got my money's worth from Alpine. I was hoping for an iPad on my dash. So far, this isn't it.

  • @garyeanes4747
    @garyeanes4747 4 года назад

For $1000, they need to address the issues that you bring up. I was strongly considering this head unit for my 98 LX470, but I'll hold off and wait until the improvements come. I have an old Pioneer head unit that has worked well for the past 10 years, so I can wait. Looks like they are about 90% to where I need it to be. Hopefully Alpine listens to your review and make the adjustments. Until then, I'll keep my dual iPad Mini setup on the dash.

Last touch screen head unit I had was a Pioneer unit running a hack job Windows Mobile. The experience was just as janky then as the new ones are now. There’s no money in software fixes for older models so its always an arms race to keep buying new head units. When it finally came time to replace it, I just got a basic double din Kenwood unit with Bluetooth, USB port, 3 row LCD screen and lots of tactile buttons. I couldn’t be happier knowing it just works. Trying to put everything into a single device works on paper but fails in practice for me.

The not being able to use Google Maps on the unit and your phone is not limited to this unit.

Kevin, it’s cool and a major upgrade from the factory head unit. However, it’s important to have a backup. With so many functions now going through this unit, if something fails (firmware, electrical etc,) you may find yourself in trouble without a backup device.

I have a 4th gen 2007 that I'd love this for..but for the price, 480 res and the other screen issues are a deal breaker...for now. They will upgrade the screen I'm sure and it'll be better. The new unit is Alpine iLX-F409. Not sure what the difference is but the screen is the same...not updated to 1080 yet. It's at $899 currently, but this doesn't include the toyota console or the datalink module. I don't see this whole package for sale anymore anywhere. Still going to wait for the updated screen resolution before I put money on it, but I like the way it's going.

I know you shouldn't watch it but I like to listen to my shows. Are you able to share all your apps from the phone to the deck or is their some kind of limitation. Finally, ( I know, long :) )w/ the ODB2 can you load apps for that? Thank you sir!

Ever notice how nearly all the reviews for the T9 start with, "this unit is great. We had to fix this this and this glitch and do a work around for this, but it's great." Yeah, no thanks. They're a great concept but not worth the headaches of the cheap chinese quality control and spotty engineering.

I expect more from Toyota, very disappointed with how the stereo is in this thing. Sound quality isn't great either, even worse than my '98 4runner. Kevin, most radios have independent source level adjustments to keep your SAT radio from blowing you out of the truck when switch sources. Not familiar with alpine specifically but my Pioneer has this feature. I am currently considering this Alpine unit because of the accessory controller, but it's $200 seperate unit. I have 83 FJ 60 and would fit nicely as a single din. Keep up the good work. It is appreciated.

Is it blocking your air vents?

I covered this in the video. It only slightly affects airflow.

The screen res and color levels were already a deal breaker. The price just has me laughing. Tablet and a normal single din beats this all day long.

Would have liked to hear more about the radio itself not just about Android Auto.

I’d use an iPad mini instead of this. Higher resolution. Just my .02

I have issues with mine not making any sound. It’s like the unit is stuck in mute. My music says it’s playing, but there is no sound. This happens with all input types including radio. I have to turn off my car and restart it for it to start work again. Anybody else have this issue?

I think for the money the Android units coming out of China are a much better option. These Apline, Sony and Pioneer units are just locked down too much with factory bloat ware.

Alipines dropping the ball 480p. Lmao. My 2013 pioneer is 1080p, slacking. Sad when Kenwood and pioneer passes up Alpine. Thanks for the review. Thinking im gonna pass on Alipine
