If you're technically a 2 year old band and The crowd is humming the intro of your song in a Foreign country ,Its safe to assume that You have arrived and will stay there.

yes--I'm amazed they were so huge in other countries so--early--but I had Norwegian exchange student friend in 1989 who helped me get into Metallica--most of my peers and classmates didn't even know how to pronounce the name---Metal--licker? The guy could even play the stuff in the band room--I was impressed--so my early exp with Metallica was through a foreign exchange student from Norway.

Its all about what energy level youre experiencing before/while performing a live jam, which you could imagine is hype af. Especially with intoxicants pulsing through your veins, and at the beginning and end of your set. Youre trying to make an impression and satisfy yourself, but sometimes you feel so charged that the normal tempo wont cut it. Also depends on who might start the tempo first and others just follow. If a band is tight, they can adjust tempo while playing. Everyone kinda relys on each other to stay in check, but its such a energetic atmosphere sometimes you cant help it.

Lars ripping on the double bass! Considering how long ago this was, his drumming was quite extreme. Sure, Slayer had Hell Awaits, and new bands like Possessed and Dark Angel were starting to push the envelope, but Lars’ drumming was still very, very impressive for 1985. I love this clip!!

People often criticize Lars based on his playing from the 90s up until today, and forget that in the 80s he was a total fucking beast, and at that time he was considered a elite metal drummer. Maybe not because of his technical ability, but easily because of his aggression and extreme energy on stage.

It is scary---for someone raised on Bach Etudes, Judy Collins and Chuck Mangione LPs--ScArY! These long haired beasts--are frantically throbbing their electric guitars and the lead guy is screaming like a banshee--and when you consider what was normally on TV and radio at the time--think Ann Murrary, Tiffany, Belinda Carlisle, and Steve Miller band--this was insane. And--it wasn't just rock drums and guitars as usual--the compositions matched the scary style and look--finally----a band that actually sounded like the album cover. Example: Molly Hatchet has a badass cover (Frank Frazetta death rider) but sounded like a Nascar race mixed with Good Ole Boys. And other bands also were just cliche rock chords---Metallica--Cliff mostly--wrote on a higher level---and the sound matched the scary artwork. Unlike---um, Dokken or I don't even want to say--other bands always sounded like BS blues cliche jams.

I wonder too but Metallica would of had another drummer lol Cliff and James both agreed that by the end of the Damage Inc. tour in 86 Lars was gonna get the boot. But since Cliff died, they settled with Lars. 2 years later they came out with ...And Justice For All, some of Lars's best drumming and Metallica's heaviest album. But I also love Jason, so I'm inbewteen a rock and a hard place because of course I wish Cliff was still here but they had some great moments after. I just wish Metallica would have broken up in 95, Load and Reload basically ruined Metallica's legacy for everyone and only 10 years after Cliff left. But honestly, Death Magnetic and Hardwired present some fine moments that easily resembles Metallica's 80s heyday. Unlike Load and Reload which just sounds like a completely different band.

Goddamn, they played with so much intensity, speed, presence and power. They were the real deal, the total package. I was 11 when I first discovered them back in 1984. I was a HUGE fan. Used to call my local radio stations every week and beg them to play Whiplash. These dudes had a punk mentality with metal edge. I ate that shit up with a spoon. Loved every single thing they put out. Cliff died, I was devastated. Never thought they would bounce back. When And Justice For All came out, their attitude shifted a bit, but still heavy. I absolutely loved it.
Then the Black album happened. Of course it was a great album. Nobody's denying that they were still insanely great.
But they had made it bigger than any metal band, getting played on Top 40 stations. Their mystique forever gone.
This video transported me and brought back the excitable kid in me who absolutely idolized these guys. Nostalgia just sucker punched the fuck out of me. 😂

In 1985 the only pics I had of them was on the back of my Kill Em All record. So when U saw them for the first time in 85 (Day on the Green Oakland, CA) I was like, "They've got acne like me!!" Totally, they "lost" that angry at the middle of 90', when they fully convert to rich and fathers. And they never lies to us, their music was always true to what their feel, young angry at 80', mature rock at 90/00, and pure enjoy right now. Is life and is perfect. I dont want a band that make "angry music" when they are totally happy. I miss this acttitude and rage, but now we are all different. No, but he was instrumental in creating the good songs. That says more about musicianship than accurate technique. Metallica had a feel, the feel wasn't supposed to be perfect, but it was Metallica. Their new music took a dive after Cliff died because he was a main force behind what they did up to Master of Puppets. You can go watch a cover band with 'accurate' players but it doesn't mean much because they are playing something someone else made.

The single song that got me into Metallica, into metal, into music in general.
I really wish they'd bring back some of that contrast of Thrash/Classical

have you heard any of their new songs? They're actually pretty good and attempt to bring back thrash, and honestly, they've done a nice job :D

Ocelynx Prowler Yeah, thrash for sure. Maybe a little too thrash. I liked the contrast myself.

The thrash is back, but that classical music element is definitely missing.

I miss the Metallica of this era. For about two years in the late 80s I pretty much listened to nothing but Metallica. It was Ride The Lightning through which I discovered them. Still seeing them later this year.

The all together progression, and attitude and the pure ferocity of lightning..is so.evident in this performance...they were truly a unit who oitshined kill em all...then to.puppets and justice...evolution peaked on the black album...they conquered thrash by '89!!!!

Witnessed this in Austin Texas 1985 at the old City Coliseum. The only thing missing here is the stage-divers. We had shit-loads of punks at the show and no stage barrier. Cliff even helped a few up onstage it was mayhem and looking back one of the best shows I've been to. Cliff was a special dude hee made the crowd go nuts!

Shows were general admission then. About $15 to 18 for a ticket. No chairs on the floor. No assigned seating anywhere. If you were front row you were touching the stage. A year after this they toured with Ozzy, the crowd would sway when he walked to the far side of the stage and very quickly you would be 20 or 30 feet away from where you were just standing. During Metallica a mosh pit took up a nice circular chunk of the floor. The "security" and yes sometimes people onstage would help worn out people get out of the crushed front rows during the show. Back half of the floor quite a bit calmer. Still felt like a free country back then, instead of rules for 4 year olds. Like piling people in the open bed of a pick up truck and driving to the lake was still perfectly normal and ok.

Yes it is overrated, everybody talks about it as the ''best metallica's concert''. You better listen to Quebec 86', Zwolle 90' or as I said (Stoned balloon 89 they played HIT THE LIGHTS, PHANTOM LORD, MOTORBREATH and DAMAGE INC.)
