Wow! Really? This is awesome I agree. But, they only got better after this. This is great in the way that it sounds very raw. But, their more recent preformances sound way tighter. And the music lessons they took after this showed in Ride the lighting and Puppets. I know you didn't say that this was their best. But, how is this better than the more recent verisons of their older songs?
They definitely got better as the 80's progressed as you can tell with all the albums that followed right up until The Black Album, but I feel these days they don't play their classic material to it's full potential. Some of the drumming is simplified with fills not being played properly and a lack of awareness of what should be done to bring out the full potential of a song. Whereas back here, everything they play has a near perfect studio representation while still capturing that live energy.

I remember that Ray Burton once said that he thought that Metallica expressed a ton of joy and delight during their shows, which "put a smile on your face"; this video is one perfect example of what he probably meant by that.

To be sure "Kill'em All" didn't have one bad song on it. But 'Phantom Lord' in my book was the best song on the album and one of the greatest pure unrelenting Thrash Metal songs ever recorded. If aliens visited me and asked me what Thrash Metal is then 'Phantom Lord' is one of the first songs I would play for them. Metallica was in rare form when orchestrating this gem of a song. It's timeless. \mm/

He went through many image changes but the inbetween period went from 1988 to 1997 with the hair being cut in 1995-96.
