  • After taking the CrossFit Aerobic Capacity seminar I had a chance to chat with Coach Chris Hinshaw about building gears in our aerobic engine, making running exciting in CrossFit workouts, and cooking bacon like a ninja.

Yes, there's a bit of background noise going on. This was recorded during regionals. But it's all transcribed so make sure to turn on captions if you're having a hard time understanding.

New Territory Fitness "The Mountain" one of Hinshaws workouts. Goes from 1 minute on to 5 minutes on back to 1. Increasing rest between each set up to 5 starts at 15 sec up to 3 min. Goal after end of on to have HR no higher than 180 - Age.

Sounds fun! Pacing intensity with each run to keep under the HR? What HR monitor do you like to use to get real-time feedback?

I have a Garmin 620, but the HR strap has issues. So, I use a Polar H7 Bluetooth. With the garmin watch you can set hr alert zones so you get alerts if you go above or below a certain level. It definitely makes sure you are working. The polar is an excellent strap, and the BT allows you to use for so many other activities and record to phone. I also have a rhythm arm band, but I'm still not convinced on the reliability of the optical HR, especially with sweating and how tight you have to have it to keep from sliding all over the place.

I appreciate your wisdom on this, so forgive me if I come off as skeptical, because I am genuinely here to learn, but don't you think that the class you used as an example of "taking their mind off running by having them focus on the unbroken snatch" really didn't actually mind the running because, as you stated, they could "take as long as they wanted, just don't walk"
If all the running I ever did was similar to this, I wouldn't run because it wouldn't seem worth it, but if I was to run and I could take as long as I wanted, so long as I didn't walk, I'm not sure I'd really mind it. Even if you told me up front I need to run for 2100 meters.
