Honesty, as a kid, I found Godzilla from the 1984 movie to be utterly terrifying and the first time I was ever afraid of the character.

For me, it's the scene right after he destroys the Super X, and there's that menacing shot of him surrounded by all the dust and red covered sky, that got to me. It's like all hope for the city is totally lost in that moment, and the main characters are right in his line of destruction. While I think the original cut is the better film overall, I prefer watching the 1985 cut when I can. It's shorter sure, but quicker pacing, and it hits all the same notes in the right places. Plus, I just can't watch the film without thinking of Raymond Burr's excellent scenes.

Her roar her appealing I was so scared that I have to hide behind the table, when the scene came on with Biollantes second form. But now today I'm a big fan of Biollante. She's great kaiju!

One of the creepy moments comes from GMK where he's passing through the city and the woman on the ground looks up at him and screams, getting his attention as he abruptly stops and turns his head and directly attacks them with his atomic breath. The other one comes from the Japanese cut of Godzilla 1984 after he picks up the train car. In the 1985 cut, he looks at the passengers through the windows and then throws it down, but in the Japanese version, he walks with it in hand for a moment and you see his reflection passing by a heavily mirrored building before actually dropping it. The reflection was cut from the American release, but I thought keeping it added a creepy atmosphere. One final one I'll add is from the first Godzilla movie where he's reaping destruction through a burning Tokyo and you see a mom clutching her two kids basically telling them that they're all going to die and join up with their dad who is dead. It's a dark and creepy disturbing scene.

"Noped out" is a great line and describes perfectly in "todays" terms the extra frightened feeling I got as a seven-year-old in the mid 60's watching "Chiller Theater" on a late Friday night and seeing the Wolf Man for the first time stalking the grave digger. I just had to say "NOPE" and ran to the safety of my mom sleeping on the nearby couch until the scene was finished.

I personally find Godzilla 84 more effectively menacing then the likes of Shin and GMK frankly.
Largely thanks to his scenes being shot at dark/foggy times, the moody atmospheric soundtrack, and finally that roar.
80's movies for me were good at creating a distinct grim tone when needed.

I know this part of the movie isn't suppose to be scary, but when King Kong is waiting for Godzilla inside Mt. Fuji's crater always creeped me out as a kid. Just the way Kong's dead looking eyes gaze toward Godzilla coming into the crater scared me. Another thing that scared me as a kid was the V.H.S. cover (which was just the American poster) of Godzilla vs. Hedorah. The image of the woman screaming and the skeletal remains of people under Hedorah's sludge freaked me out so much, it was one of the only Godzilla movies I didn't want to own or rent. But I got over it pretty quickly after I saw the movie on the old Sci-Fi Channel back in 1996. A great video for this time of year. Hope to see another one like this next spooky season. Happy Halloween!

From the Horror Flora review of the 1954 film concering moment nine:
"What really gets me is how Godzilla’s menacing of the mob on Odo Island is restrained by his motivation. It’s yet another thing that sets this film apart from other 50’s monster flicks. In an American movie, Godzilla might have attacked the people then and there to establish his threat. We might get a shot of a minor character looking up at the monster and screaming before being eaten or crushed off screen. The monster would do this not for sustenance or any other reason, but because the movie needed to establish he was a threat. Instead, Godzilla notices the humans, roars at them, then goes back to doing what he set out to do in the first place by swimming off into the sea. Even this early in the series, Godzilla’s actions are driven by in character motivations rather than a formula’s need for conflict. It breaks with tradition, and even misses an opportunity to make the scene scarier, but it keeps Godzilla’s character intact."

    5. The little Destroyahs attack the soldiers and Yakame (Godzilla vs Destroyah)
    4. Godzilla's creepy soulless eyes (Godzilla, Mothra and King Ghidorah: Giant Monsters All-Out Attack) (not a specific moment, but still something worthy of being pointed out)
    3. Godzilla's rampage in Tokyo (Gojira)
    2. Inside the dead boat with the giant bugs (Godzilla 1984)
Honorable mentions: Destroyah's entrance (Godzilla vs Destroyah), Ghidorah's movements (Godzilla: King of the Monsters) (not a specific scene, but still gives off creepy vibes), Ending scene (Shin Godzilla), Destroyah tortures Junior (Godzilla vs Destroyah), the Meganula crawl across the city (Godzilla vs Megagiurus), people who worship Ghidorah fall one by one (Godzilla: The Planet Eater), most scenes with Kumonga (Son of Godzilla)
    1. Godzilla takes over a baby's body (Godzilla Comic) (guys, believe me, I didn't make that up).

good overall. People forget that Godzilla is actually a horror masterpiece. Even hero Godzilla movies preserve a bit of that. My personal favorite scenes are all examples of that. For example, in "The Terror of Mechagodzilla" when Godzilla is finally seen the movie, his introduction is so badass! We spend almost the whole first hour of the movie experiencing the existential horror of the terrors that no human weapons can even slow down, let alone stop. Then, when the movie feels most hopeless, it introduces us to the only one who can save us, the existential horror who terrorizes even the the other horrors. And at first, all we see is Mecha stop and look towards the ocean, then there's a shadow looming over some buildings. At this point we dare not hope, the movie has taken all hope from us. Then, suddenly, like a war howl, the iconic Godzilla roar, and then the shadow is illuminated and it's finally him! Godzilla! And this time nothing is going to stop him. Fans will recall that last time these two monsters met, Godzilla needed help to stop Mecha, this time it's mecha who has help, but that will not avail, why? Because Goji must have been working out in the depths, this time, he's ready to slaughter, and the remaining 40 minutes of movie do not disappoint, as we watch our hero decimate his enemies, save the earth, and then return to the depths having confirmed his status as King of the Kaiju

The creepiest and most chilling scene is from the 1956 American version of Godzilla. It's the night on Odo Island and this scene is far better than the original Japanese version. Raymond Burr and companion are in a tent and the storm slowly begins to blow in. Under the wind and thunder you can hear Godzilla's footsteps. This scene really scared me as a little kid when this movie premiered. I still think it's the best.

I think the storm scene when Godzilla mysteriously rose out of that rock bed island in the beginning of Godzilla 1985 (Return of Godzilla) was very creepy. Also in the movie, when Godzilla shows up out of the mist in front of the power plant where a security guard notices him first hand and got stomped on (I think) is really creepy. In Godzilla (2014), when the Female Muto stalked the train bridge and attacked the train was super scary.

The scariest moment of the Godzilla franchise for me has always been the scene in Godzilla: 2000, where Godzilla just blends into the darkness after the GPN runs into him after he destroyed a roadway. The way he blends into the darkness like a shadowy, demonic being after the van shines a light on him and peaks at the van and then roars at the van after Yuki flashes photos of him was honestly pretty scary, like atmospheric horror, as well as capturing the scale of Godzilla with live action, miniatures and suit mation. There has yet to be a full-on Horror based Godzilla or kaiju movie, where the kaiju are truly frighteningly. The movie Cloverfield is an example of what a kaiju horror movie would look like, as that movie really was terrifyingly unsettling, even disturbing at times.

The one other thing that was funny about Godzilla Raids Again is that it was the first Godzilla where his spines don't glow when he breathes his atomic breath and because of the success of Gojira 1954 Godzilla Raids Again was a rushed film and it showed Godzilla's first fight against another monster Angirus and the one scene in that movie that was really crazy was during the climatic battle where the fight was sped up right before Godzilla and Angirus went crashing through that temple and Godzilla killed his foe with a bite to the neck along with a dose of atomic breath.

Godzilla's first rampage in Godzilla 2000, the American version, when the fire truck sirens are going, the power goes out in the town, and the luminescence of a raging inferno goes on behind an approaching Godzilla. Cue the 'Psycho'-esque music, Godzilla scouring for his next target and roaring... All of it just comes together to make a truly terrifying scene. It reminded me of the nighttime onslaught of the flying saucers in War of the Worlds (1953).

I think in GMK the scene with the girl trapped in the hospital is pretty unnerving. A little less visually but conceptually unnerving is a girl's soul being bound to a flower/godzilla abomination in Biollante.

Seems like a waste to throw in scraps that were cut from the movies when there are other creepy and eerie moments in both the films and Singular Point that could've been used. His still-beating heart at the end of GMK, his transformation into Godzilla Ultima in Singular Point looking like he's climbing up out of hell, the sight of Tokyo fully engulfed in the hurricane sized cloud of Red Dust near the series' end, his death at the end of Godzilla v Destoroyah, or when he finally lays waste to Tokyo in the original and they linger on every shot of destruction so you can see it in full. Plenty of great material that didn't require taking from the cutting room floor.

I think the one scene in gmk where that woman in a hospital bed should’ve made the list. Just having the thought of this massive monstrosity slowly walk toward you and you being stuck in a hospital with no way out just sends chills down my spine. Even after it turns and walks a different direction, you think you’re safe. But then the woman sees a massive tail quickly slamming into the hospital. And she’s more than likely dead. And she most likely had a brutal end too, the entire hospital collapsed. And not only massive chunks of concrete crushing anything beneath it, but also the woman is still in her hospital bed with a broken leg, so she still couldn’t get out of the situation. I know japanese soldiers wanted to take revenge on people forgetting about them, but damn they didn’t have to massacre japan just for the sake of people not remembering them.

But remember it's not just Japanese soldiers. It's also U.S soldiers who died in the conflict and Chinese civilians who died during the Rape of Nanking. They would be willing to get some revenge. 2/3 of the G-Man is made up of people who hate Japan and also given that it's probably thousands close to nearly a million souls in him it's probably hard to have all those consciousness's focus on something that small

#9 The opening scene of Son of Godzilla scared the living shit outta me when I was watching a Godzilla Marathon on TV as a kid, so much so that I changed the channel. The face they used on the Daisenso-goji suit was positively ghastly! It was definitely a different head. They also used another head on the same suit when Godzilla Charges towards the beach to rescue Minya. This head had a more angry look to it. I later grew to like the 2nd angrier looking head which I loving nicknamed the angry frog faced Godzilla. Once I realized that those other two horrific looking heads were only in the beginning I switched the channel back to watch the Musuko-goji (which until recently was considered the ugliest iteration of Godzilla😆) suit finish the rest of the film. Shin Godzilla was designed to look like how Godzilla would look if he was in the horror movie genre instead of Scifi. And I have to admit TOHO accomplished this mission. With the 1st form rivaling the ghastly-ness of the google eyed Godzilla head from the storm scene in Son of Godzilla. I saw Godzilla vs. Biollante as a teenager and the scene that frightened me a bit was when the 2nd form Biollante charged forward and seemed like he was about to bite Godzilla's head off.

I agree with you on Godzilla’s first appearance looking over the mountain top. That always freaked me out as a kid although the puppet used doesn’t really match the head on the big Godzilla costume so well. That disconnect maybe adds to the creep hallucinatory feeling of the scene. As a child I wondered why the drawing of this scene presented in the movie a little later on looks even less like Godzilla. I now as an adult assume they used concept art for the drawing presented in the movie, and the actual effect, filmed separately, had evolved into a different look.

8:35 Right on. The reason it's effective is because we expect to see Godzilla for the first time at night, in some impressive effects moment. He not only shows up here in the daytime, but there are people IN THE SHOT with him. When we watch folks going up the hill we're kind of relaxed for some preparation for something and then he just pops up. It has an effect similar to the original THE THING when they open the door and the alien is RIGHT THERE.

Shin is just in a league by itself. Not going to lie but I rolled my eyes when I saw the trailer with its 2nd googly eyed form. Then I saw it and boy was I wrong. Those googly eyes were perfect and my god he just gets more terrifying. Great to have Godzilla be the terrifying "enemy" again.

The second, although not G is in Rodan where they guy wakes up after the mine collapse only to see a baby Rodan and the parent Rodan feeding it.

Great list. One I liked was Godzilla emerging from the ground from Godzilla vs The Thing, as a kid it seemed like he could be anywhere just waiting to wake up, that scared me. As a huge fan of all Japanese Kaiju, some of my childhood chills outside of Godzilla films were when the passengers on a ship see the gargantua looking up at them from under the water in War of the Gargantuas - The insect creatures attacking people in the mine in Rodan - The sea monster looking in the window at the hotel in Ultraman ep 4. - These are the ones that popped into my head while watching your video - Great Memories !

Couldn't agree more with #1 and #2. I see Shin Godzilla as taking Godzilla back to his roots, in a modern way. Something that legendary Godzilla should have been, IMO, instead of the 'superhero' route they chose.
#2 is a fantastic shot. In addition to what you said, I think it's the fact the crowd - and to an extent the audience - expected to see a monster standing at the top of the hill, not big enough to look over it like a fence!
The first time I encountered the Godzilla films was when Channel 4, here in the UK, showed a few of them so many years ago. I think one of the shots they used for the advert was the one shown at 2:43 in this vid. Daytime rather than nighttime, but those same dead, staring eyes freaked little Vermis out!

Godzilla Vs. Megaguirus is very unsettling to me personally, when the mansized meganula attacked the people in the alley was hard to sit through. another unerving part that happened was in the final battle when Godzilla just starts violently shaking his head out of nowhere. though it has been years since i've seen it, so one day I'm gonna watch it again just to see if those moments still hold up..

  • @SuperStoryMode

Personally, I believe the MonsterVerse has plenty of unsettling moments--especially in the 2014 film. It doesn't have to be scary, just intense. The MV strikes the perfect balance between elements from Godzilla's past eras, especially concerning its balance between realism and fun monster action. It's EXACTLY what I want out of a monster film series! The MonsterVerse feels tailor-made just for me! That grounded feel really gets the atmosphere dripping with dread! My personal favorite is the scene leading up to Muto's emergence in Janjira. I also LOVED seeing the aftermath of San Francisco in Episode Five of the recent Monarch series!
I haven't been able to see many of the older Godzilla films--just a few from my local Blockbuster back in the early 2000s--but I'm remedying that now, thanks to streaming. I plan on re-watching the ones I saw back then, too. I haven't seen Vs. Megaguirus since I was a kid, but the scenes when it was still metamorphizing at human size really messed me up back then haha!

Personally my scariest moments were when Godzilla attacked in return of Godzilla. Something about that read firey cityscape. And don't even get me started on the roar, how it's jaw twitches like that. But another part I sound terrifying was when Godzilla attacked Tokyo in GvKG. I think the music and lower shots looking up at him is what did it for me as a kid

With that promo still for Hedorah, they were definitely just trying to make the features of Godzilla's face more discernable in a fairly rudimentary way. It's common to see simple white eyes drawn onto the monsters' faces in doctored promo photos when the lighting renders them too hard to see. This is likely an extension of that tactic that misfired.

First it has the most bloody monster fights I've seen so far. But the aliens were even worse for me. When their "masks" break - their black blood covers their faces to reveal a ape like face. And the first revealed alien also made these disturbing sounds.
