My dad, and my cousin were Manfred B. Lee and Frederic Dannay, the writing team that between 1929 and 1971 created Ellery Queen. and his world in novels, short stories, editorials, and "Ellery Queen's Mystery Magazine". Some really bad movies were made about Ellery, and the year Dad died, the Ellery TV show debuted. He and Dannay had nothing to do with the show's scripting or casting, but I think David Wayne in the role of Ellery;s dad was perfect casting.
To this day I always make Q’s with double tail! I still have all my Grandmothers Ellery Queen books.!

Tonight l watched Ellery Queen played by Ralph Bellany...1942 .. cute, a bit of comedy thrown into the plot, but l didn't picture Ellery Queen acting like the way they had Ralph Bellany play him... I think of Ellery Queen a little more on the serious side ? And tall haha .

@@maggiejane6327 Ralph Bellamy would have been good as Inspector Queen, though I did enjoy David Wayne. One of Mr. Bellamy's early roles was as the police inspector in 1941's "The Wolf Man", starring Lon Chaney Jr.
One of the final repeats of the show before it left the air for good, sadly. "Ellery Queen" was a terrific show that deserved to last longer than it did.

Yeah, I guess it didn't have enough ``babes'' on it. I kinda remember loving this show, too, although I was only 13 when this aired. I'm sure it contributed to my love of detective stories as I was growing up. I also read all the Agatha Christie novels when I was about that age, too. Edited to add: this episode features a manner of death which sadly came to Brandon Lee in the making of ``the Crow.'' 'Reminds me of the ``cul de mort'' episode of ``Nero Wolfe.''
epaddon, NBC was on a precipitous fall to the bottom of the ratings. They had a way of shooting themselves in the foot.
Yes, I was always a fan of Jim Huttons and David Wayne. These networks, at least in the past, cancelled a lot of great shows too soon

Ellery Queen was one of my favourite shows back in the day.. watched every episode. And then before l knew it it was cancelled .. l remember l was so upset ...
I love those short commercial breaks and the commercials themselves were way more entertaining than those we have today that range from absurd to zzzzz-stupid.

I have the series on DVD. My family and I used to watch it when it was on TVLand in the mid-to-late 1990s, and I loved it! My dad was upset when Jim Hutton died at such a young age of liver cancer; he was only about 46 years old.
David Wayne, Jim Hutton, and Tom Reese (Velie) appeared on The Twilight Zone.

What a blast from the past! I remember sitting with my dad who always figured out the murderer. This Ellery Queen was definitely a classic in my book.
Loved every minute of it I think I was probably 14 or so when I watched the original.
Miss this show and Jim Hutton. My husband and I watched this every Sunday night and ordered pizza in.
I always liked Don DeFore. A genuinely nice man, a family man, who simply viewed his acting as work, his way of making a living and nothing more.
This and "Nero Wolfe" (Maury Chaykin/Timothy Hutton {Jim's son}) were both very well done (and unfortunately short lived}, period pieces.
I did not know they were father and son. I liked them both. I also liked Nero Wolfe, I tried to watch all of their series, but didn't seem like very many.
Ellery Queen lasted 1 year on NBC and Nero Wolfe was two years on A & E. Both available on dvd.
That makes so much sense, I never connected the two. It is interesting how many actors from the classic age of cinema went on to have kids in the business.

This series is really quite good, with great characters, cameo actors and intricate plots. I actually enjoyed this video, with all of the commercials in it too.
I guess NBC didn't want people thinking. I was very young when this show was on. But my aunt would watch Ellery Queen with us and would always get it right.

You, the viewer, got to figure out "who dunnit", rather than watch a crime being committed and then watch the detective figure it out.

ELLERY QUEEN was a fun series created by the masterful writing team of Levinson and Link and I really enjoyed reliving the experience of watching those wonderful 1970's commercials.

I was able watch a few of these in Iran and dubbed in Farsi. It was a million years ago and I didn’t even speak English.
I loved the shows.
I liked this show very much. I was 10 but I was dedicated to seeing this whenever I could. I seem to recall that all of us kids and our folks tuned in. It's a real head scratcher why this didn't last any longer, but I guess it must have been up against something on ABC or CBS that was the reigning hit of the time.
Recall it being canceled at the time.... and I was surprised because it was good.
Brings back happy memories of a more innocent time.
Wow..what a great show this was; it was well written, perfectly cast and the famous actors were superb in their roles. The show could've and should've run much longer than it did. I only wish more episodes were available on YT.

I think I searched 'ellery queen tv show full shows free online'. I don't recall if I put 'RUclips' in that search.
The 'channel' name had 'Archive' or something like it in the name.
My kiddo gave me the box set, so I deleted my RUclips file.

I always enjoyed every episode of Ellery Queen...It had everything: nostalgia, wits, great performances, father and son loving relationship, suspense...even OTR (remember Simon Brimmer?) I would have liked 30 more episodes :-(
John Hillerman was great as Simon Brimmer a character you love to hate who always thought he was better at solving crimes than Ellery and was always wrong. John played him to perfection.
Whenever I saw Mr. Hillerman portray the toffee-nosed Jonathan Higgins on “Magnum:P.I.,” I was reminded of his equally superb portrayal of the wonderfully supercilious Simon Brimmer on the terrific “Ellery Queen” detective series with the late Jim Hutton and the late David Wayne. This show should have been on NBC for several more seasons, imo.

It really is a tribute to the late John Hillerman’s acting ability, that he was able to be SO convincing as the haughty and pompous Simon Brimmer and also as Jonathan Higgins, and Mr. Hillerman was an American, born and raised in Texas.
I heard he perfected his posh British accent by listening to recordings of Sir Laurence Olivier. Mr. Hillerman was also superb in “Chinatown” and “Blazing Saddles,” among several other film appearances. He was a great actor.

I've never been much of a TV watcher but this was one of the few shows I liked.

Love watching the old commercials
Shame on NBC for cancelling this after only one season! Unlike other TV murder mysteries that focus too much on the dramatics of the case, Ellery actually gave all the evidence. You just had to be observant, and you didn't need encyclopaedic knowledge like Sherlock Holmes (though I also love Holmes). Maybe the plots aren't super complicated or unique, but they're well constructed and entertaining. The books are great too, but Hutton's talent really takes the character to another level.
I loved watching this show as a kid. My brother and I would argue over our theories during the breaks and sometimes we made little bets -- I remember one episode with an Alice in Wonderland theme where I had to buy him a milkshake afterward. I still love to rewatch them with him and see if we can remember all the details. Maybe at the time the show didn't have the biggest audience, but I don't think NBC gave it a fighting chance with a single-season run.

Interestingly, it was because of the expense and not poor ratings. This was not a cheap show to make and NBC, like most media giants, could not see the future of 100 channel cable to keep the show in syndication.
@@Laceykat66 A similar thing happened to Hutton's son, Timothy, in the marvelous "Nero Wolfe" series. Terrific quality in every aspect. A&E wouldn't pay for more episodes, apparently.

I have often wondered about this tv show from when I was a kid. What a joy to see it again after so long. As with Oliver Hardy and Eric Morecambe, I loved the way at the time that they would include and either talk to, or acknowledge us at home. And way before interactive technology. It got cancelled because the network thought it was too “cerebral” for the general public. Who would want to think that hard when being entertained? 🙄
@Tom Lowery Accurate or not, that is what I have read - The network thought it made people think too much for them to view it as relaxing entertainment. This show is probably my favorite television series, but it definitely has its faults. Some of the clues are a little much, such as in the pilot episode when the victim unplugged the television at the exact moment a sun was on the screen. It’s a good thing it wasn’t supposed to rain, then they never would have found the murderer. I could see why people might not have continued watching. Still, whatever the reason, it’s a shame there aren’t more episodes. It’s just good fun.

I loved this show when it came out 76 and was soooo disappointed when it didn’t return the next season.
This show was an inspiration when I watched it as a kid. Didn't know why we didn't get more episodes in the UK but sadly looks like it was dropped. What a shame. Jim Hutton was a great role model.

I was shocked to see in the ending credits that this was “Based on Characters Created by Ellery Queen.” I always assumed Ellery Queen was a purely fictional protagonist. In fact, the author “Ellery Queen” was a combination of two real people. Ellery Queen is a pseudonym created in 1929 by crime fiction writers Frederic Dannay and Manfred Bennington Lee and the name of their main fictional character, a mystery writer in New York City who helps his police inspector father solve baffling murders.
He is BUT as part of the charm of the magazine they had the author being Ellery Queen.
Well put. Dad and cousin Dan used the pseudonym Ellery Queen AND the name of the fictional detective because (they were young men) they figured it would be easier for potential readers to remember them and their work if the names were the same.
My God I miss the 70s so much. What a wonderful time to be young. I hope I never lose the memories!

I was about 8 when this aired originally. My whole family would watch and try to figure out the mystery. This program was so underrated - probably the only NBC show I watched. I always thought Jim Hutton was perfect for this role (sadly left us way too early). Thank you very much for this upload.

I agree 100%, it was very underrated and should've aired for at least several more seasons.
In a sense, Jim's son Timothy Hutton followed in his footsteps - with his role as Archie Goodwin in the now-defunct A&E series "A Nero Wolfe Mystery" with Maury Chaykin (which also left the air too soon).
But that "Ellery Queen" failed in this way was also indicative of the (low) state of NBC by this period, foreshadowing the utter disaster that was the Fred Silverman era.
I watch these episodes daily as part of my treatment of MS. I find it helps my memory loss to rewatch my favorites.

This episode is so meta. Half the enjoyment is catching the inside jokes ("I'm not an actor who counts his lines". "243. They cut it down to 97". "97. They cut me down to a walk-on"). Too funny.
Not an inside joke. No filmmaking knowledge needed to appreciate the irony.

It got a full season and all its episodes aired, which is more than most new shows got on NBC at that time. Particularly if they were scheduled on Thursday, where they were in the toilet. This was back when NBC cancelled everything except for 5 shows each year, in case you forgot. Midway through this season, there was this newspaper article that ran in multiple papers about NBC's ratings problems. The title was "Heads Are Gonna Roll". In a panic, their neurotic jew executives started yanking half the network off the air and throwing the remaining segs in the trash disposal, trying not to make heads roll. They even did it to "Petrocelli" which was in Season 2 and only had a few episodes left to run (they never ran them... not that that's surprising, they never aired all of "Ironside's" episodes either... and they only had that on for 8 seasons). Actually, that article turned out to be prophetic because The Mad Programmer's head did roll a few weeks afterwards. And then the terminal narcissist Paul Klein came in, and he was like, "Whatever, I don't want any of his stuff."
This is a very fine and edgy episode with many great performances. I always liked this show at the time, 76, but it seems even better with some acting experience under my belt. Such a snarky script, and so much time has passed since I saw it the first time that I was fooled again.

This show was cancelled because it wasn't pulling in the ratings. I'm puzzled that folks didn't tune in in large numbers. Life is filled with "might have beens". Same for Nero Wolfe and Tom Hutton. Oh well. RIP Jim Hutton.

That stunt man would probably have survived that car wreck. It looked like a wild bumpy ride but survivable.
I only came across this show because of the (now a couple years old) video made by Oddity Archive based on Ellery Queen's FIRST home, the Dumont Network. I then watched the episode he highlighted, and when this episode came on, showing that Vincent Price, of all actors, was in the episode, I HAD to watch it! XD
I just watched the pilot to Ellery Queen ( “Too Many Suspects” aired March 23 1975). First glance of the regular "4th wall broken" moment makes me realize what may have inspired the SNL sketch "Minute Mystery" with Dan Aykroyd and John Belushi (the 2 installments of this running sketch aired in 1975 at the start of SNL's first season...)

I loved Ellery Queen as a kid, and I'm still hurt watching this 1976 show knowing Jim only had a few years to live. It's hard not to think about that.
Loved the opening theme. This was a fun show that I wish had lasted longer.

Colleen...I can't find this anywhere... My mom turned me onto this. I can't remember if it was the re-runs being ran on ME-TV ,for a little while, a few years back or if she got it from the local library.
If possible, would you consider loading a few of these episodes to RUclips?
@@thehoylecakefiles8675 - As 'Colleen' said, this is on DVD, and presumably in better shape than when originally aired on the network. But yeah, I know, it's for the commercial breaks and local cutaways.
I have it too, my Mum and I love it. I never liked Murder She Wrote, a redo of the same formula by the same producers, Link and Levinson. They were friends (and fans of Ellery Queen) when kids. Maybe it was the time period that did not work with audiences (I loved it). I wish it was this series that had gone on to great success instead of MSW, though as we now know, the series would only have lasted 3 seasons since Jim Hutton was taken from us way too early at 45 in 1979.
