Sherlock Holmes In The House of Fear 1945

- Holmes is visited by Mr. Chalmers (Gavin Muir), an insurance agent with a strange tale. Seven single men, calling themselves "The Good Comrades", live together in the remote Scottish castle of Drearcliffe House, near the village of Inverneill. Recently one of the "Good Comrades" received a strange message, an envelope containing nothing but seven orange pips. That night, he was murdered and his body horribly mutilated. A few days later, a second envelope was delivered, this time containing six pips, and the recipient also died mysteriously soon afterwards, his battered corpse being recovered from the base of the cliffs. Chalmers holds £100,000 of life insurance policies on the seven men, and suspects that one is systematically murdering the others in order to collect the money, and begs Holmes to investigate.
Holmes and Watson arrive at the scene only to find another murder has occurred. His body is burned to a crisp. Lestrade also arrives to investigate. Despite Holmes' best efforts, three more deaths occur, each time leaving the victim's body unrecognisable.
Lestrade jumps to the obvious conclusion, that the last surviving member, Bruce Alistair (Aubrey Mather), murdered all the others. However, after Watson goes missing, Holmes has deduced the truth and leads Lestrade (and Alistair) to a secret room where all the "Good Comrades" - alive and well - are hiding with Watson tied up. Holmes explains that Alistair was the victim of a plot to frame him for murder and collect the insurance money by the other six.

Fantastyczny duet. Jedyny taki w historii kina.

I think I recognise the old sets again and again...the sweeping starcase, th posh door, have been used on so many programmes 🤣
...and let's not forget..the sound effects!
They are JUST SOUND EFFECTS!
Living in a squat in 1981, the reason why me and my brother got a TV (IB&W, 2nd hand) was a tea time BBC2 series of all the Rathbone and Bruce films. Eating our tea, while the sky darkened, the autumn wind rustling the trees just outside our window, and watching these film, is still what London means to me.
Same here, I loved all the BBC2 old films they used to show about 6pm after children's hour had ended. It always seemed to be autumn or winter outside.Afterwards I usually rushed off and built a 'set' of the film using lego and recreated scenes from it.
That sounds lovely 🌹
@Pstephen @Londonfogey I love your comments! They give me a warm surge of nostalgia for a past that isn't even my own. (I guess because it sounds so cozy, and it triggers elements of my own past and interests that relate.) 🙂
I am so thankful for these movies, stories and actors. We can always find comfort that there is logical solution. No blood, trauma, ignorant vocabulary. What a relief 😌

I am too. I love the British stories. They use their brains and logic. Our Americans always have use brute force. Blood and Gore. So I watch way more British tv. So thanks for sharing with your cousin😅 across the Pond

You are exactly right
One of the absolute joys in this world is watching the superb, exquisite pacing and timing of Rathbone's delivery of his dialogue as Sherlock Holmes and Nigel Bruce's equally excellent timing and delivery of his responses to Holmes' statements and questions! The on-screen chemistry between Rathbone and Bruce as Holmes and Watson respectively, has never been equalled in the history of film or TV productions of the Sir Arthur Conan Doyle stories! Approached yes, equalled--definitely not! The scene in "House of Fear" in which Holmes and Watson discuss Captain Simpson's demeanor when he saw the needle on the chair in the morning compared to his demeanor in the evening at dinner when he thought erroneously that his drink was poisoned with prussic acid is a classic Holmes/Watson scene in the Universal Studios' Sherlock Holmes films!
Yes..... this is the best, never to be even equaled or surpassed.
No cgi, just the best actors from the silver screen. Life will never be the same again, lost to us through "multiculturalism"........... R.I.P 🇬🇧
Only historically interesting I suppose for aficionados of film-making history.
I agree 💯.. The best !!!
My father and I didn't have what anyone would have called a loving, close relationship...He was distant and cold. However, when these old films came on BBC2 at 6.00pm on a Thursday evening, we shared an hour together...I remember it with fondness....😔
So sad,I know it doesn't help ,but for what it worth I fully understand your feeling, coze I've experienced the same kind of relationships:)
At least you recognized the coldness so would know it was not something you wished to be..toss of the dime who our parents are😘

When I was a child in the early '50s, I used to watch Basil Rathbone as Sherlock Holmes on television on Saturday mornings. I was spellbound. Thank you so much for uploading these films so we all can enjoy them once again. The copies are very good.
What i love about these old Holmes films was the way they showed all these imposing , Gothic and foreboding estates and houses in these remote and or desolate locations...the proper setting for a mystery and the Gothic.
Black & white and shrouded in shadows. I absolutely love it!

Not at all. I own many of these and still watch on youtube! Iconic stories with outstanding actors...🔎👁️
Mine is this and Terror by Night. Probably seen them both 20 times in the last couple years.
The Hound of the Baskervilles has always been my favorite Holmes story.
I love this one and the scarlet claw, Rathbone and Bruce really are the best ,
I agree with you. I've had the same experience with this movie. I keep coming back to it no matter how many times I've watched it.
You have to love the touching remarks Holmes makes about his enduring friendship and association with Watson at the conclusion of "The House of Fear"(1945)! Holmes is frequently somewhat harsh in his criticism of Watson, so it is nice to see him express his deep love for Watson and heartfelt gratitude for his friendship!
The best Sherlock Home ever can never get tired of watching it over and over since 1962

Yes I love how they both absolutely respect and care for the other! Dr. Watson is such a treasure and Sherlock doesn’t take himself overly serious which makes them perfect!
I love the old Sherlock Holmes flicks, they're comforting to me for some reason despite being ages before my time.
All is well that ends well
Totally.

I watch them fairly regularly even though I was born in the late 80s. Nigel and Basil were the perfect duo as Holmes and Watson
I FULLY agree! When I'm stressed or dealing with anxiety, this is a must go to for me.
What a glorious movie! Rathbone and Bruce are the only Holmes and Watson I watch. I wish we still had movies today like this, a bit of intellect and no vulgarity. Fabulous movies there'll never be the like of again. Thx for the uploads!!!

@@steveahalverson1532 true hahaha
A masterpiece of intrigue like this era of Holmes and Watson shows just how powerful these original stories would have been to the British people when written. Until Jeremy Brett nobody else comes close to the real Sherlock Holmes and none of these modern ones can hold a candle to Basil Rathbone's masterly portrayal of England's greatest investigating detective! Thanks for posting this, no matter how many times I have watched them over the last nearly 70 years they still delight me.
And I thought I was the only one that did this. It is wonderful to know that there are others in these trying times who share a blissful infinity to enjoy classic movies and books.

Welcome Dear! ✌
Sounds like you went down memory lane and took a turn onto Cornball street.
Basil Rathbone is Sherlock Holmes in my humble opinion. Love these old classics.
Incomparable.
He actually looks like how one would picture Holmes to look. I always wish they would have made more full length features but the truth is Rathbone hated playing the character. One of Rathbone's ancestral relations, Major John Rathbone of the Union Army accompanied President Lincoln to Ford's Theater the night of.his assassination. He went in the place of.General Grant whom Lincoln had invited but had other obligations. Major Rathbone suffered a knife wound to his arm as he attempted to apprehend Booth before he jumped from Lincoln's box to the stage.
Elementary my dear Watson
Rathbone will always be the one and only Sherlock Holmes. Cumberbatch is second division, and Brett is non league!
Yes!
I love these old Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson movies💖. Thank you!
The best and greatest pair to ever act as Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson !
No. The most acted parts in tv and film so huge numbers to choose from. How about Jeremy Brett for Holmes and that whole tv series? Martin Freeman possibly the best Watson - much more true to books and, perhaps, even better and more interesting than the books
eddie lee - no one else comes close to this iconic pairing. Some people think they are not playing the characters as written by Doyle, but when have films ever done that? If they were exactly the same as the books there would be no point in watching them. Rathbone's Holmes will always be the version that others will be judged by, and so far there are no competitors.
I really love these old Sherlock Holmes movies from the 1940's. They were the best! Thanks for showing them!
This has always been one of my favorites. Excellent atmospheric mystery, and a beautiful setting. Great for a dark and stormy night. Thanks for posting it up!
Simply the BEST Holmes & Watson on the silver screen!!
I still think he's the best Sherlock Holmes ever. There have been a lot of interpretations and they have been so enjoyable. Jeremy Brett and Benedict Cumberbatch. Christopher Plummer but for me it's basil Rathbone every time who played a lot of villains what people remember him with great affection. Also I was reading something about him recently and found out that he was a hero in World War 1. He also lost his brother during that war. As for Sherlock Holmes himself I think he and Watson are two Heroes who have never let us down
Yes Basil Rathbone, Jeremy Brett, then Robert Downey Jnr are the best ones.
*must confess Rathbone embodied what Holmes was for me inside the pages.
Yes. Basil Rathbone is the only Holmes that I can watch...over and over. He does totally embody the character in writing, and I've read then all.
@@norabrown5584 Downey ruined the character, IMHO. He should have been fined for his portrayal But I'm in my sixties so Rathbone is the only Holmes for me.
@@BilliusEllison there were others who played SH and they certainly didn't do him justice. Rathbone will always be the best and he only made 14 films as him, unless there are some I don't know about.

@@teamdoa He was never asked to portray a character in a book. That seems silly and rather impossible. He was acting a character written for the screen and those performances have remained iconic to this day.
@@teamdoa you are absolutely correct. As a Sherlock Holmes enthusiast Jeremy Brett was the personification of the character created by Doyle. While I find Nigel Bruce's Watson endearing, the bumbling fuzzy portrayal makes him seem incapable of being the author of the Sherlock Holmes memoir.

This is one of the beautifully shot films in the series. Excellent use of canted camera angles, lighting, well designed sets, wind and rain and of course there is only one Basil Rathborne. Thanks for this!
Opening scene in Scotland looks to me like the standard Universal archway. I think it was used in many of their classic monster films. I think they initially are standing in the archway of what was Conliffe's shop in the Wolfman.

EDIT: Can't forget to give props to the amazing musical scores in this work.
All these great old music scores were the further development of the opera of Europe. One of the last "classical" composers was Eric Korngold who went to Hollywood and established in the 40s the symphonic sounds of those early movies.. So many others followed up,.. Rozsa, Steiner, Newman upto John Williams, who was the most productive and most popular and most copied composer of the past 40 years..Also never forgetting the great Ennio Morricone. (over 250 Films)... Today Hans Zimmer has the say in Hollywood....
All this background music, that we take so for granted, sets the mood and charm for these movies..
Its such a pity that the remaining classical composers in Europe from the last century followed the "12 - tone" music.. This was interesting but in itself a dead end.. In all the concerts I've heard in Europe over the past 45 years, no one particularly likes to be tortured by this sort of dissonant music.. Thats another reason we love these old classy movies..
Don't you just love it when an owl outsmarts Watson in the graveyard, "who, who" is all the owl says yet Watson manages to hold a conversation with the bird, classic Conan Doyle. 😁
And yet Watson continues to give it to Lestraude...
Yes I too watch these old Sherlock movies for comfort. They are certainly effective. ❣️❣️❣️
Watson is an adorable little puppy isn't he, almost wags a tail there at the end.
Loved every minute thank you so much, nothing recalls my childhood like watching these old films.
Why he is puppy ? Isnt a puppy a little dog ?
@@latoya7029 It's a metaphor. Watson practically wiggles all over and wags his tail for Holmes. Metaphorically speaking.
Poor version of Watson. After all he was a military man having served in Afghanistan and India.
In the books Watson is a tough as nails former soldier who served in India.
Thank you for showing these old movies, they are so great!.
this SH couple is the most intriguing & appropriate there is, I mean not only is Sherlock perfect but his sidekick is beyond perfect. No one has ever come close to what they portray.

Me to. watched them with my brother and father on either channel 56 or 38 UHF out of Boston.
This is a very clear version. I do love Basil Rathbone, and am quite delighted! Mahalo
The car crash at the beginning was extremely well shot. And when Holmes and Watson go to Scotland they show a clip of the Flying Scotsman, one of the most famous trains in the UK.
I believe one of the fastest at the time.... was it L.N.E.R?
Basil Rathbone still is the most iconic Sherlock Holmes of all time , playing the part in a way that not even Conan Doyle , I believe, could have wished it better delivered.
Sherlock is perfect. Watson is poorly written. He should be a smart physician with great courage after his time overseas, not a bumbling fool
@lacemonitor181 Check out their version of "The Hound of the Baskervilles". Last line, "Watson, the needle."
@@SOS-School_Of_Survival I agree. Watson was a British Army doctor who had just returned from Afghanistan before he met Holmes. He was a soldier of great courage, not a bumbler. That campaign was far worse for the British than the much later Russian failure and the more recent US and European action.
Yes his Holmes was what Clark Gable was to Rhett Butler... better than you could ever imagine when reading the book
@@SOS-School_Of_Survival Yes, alas. He, and Lestrade, served as very unsubtle foils. I get the impression the audience the studio was looking for were adolescent boys who they thought would appreciate this and not a more subtle characterization. Like the bumbling sidekick in the westerns. Watson was made to be so stupid that the audience would feel good about being smarter than he was. But at this point we have no choice but to appreciate Watson as at least a quite likable bubbleheaded companion. At least the relationship btw the two works out great. And that counts for something.
A truly wonderful film. They were the best Holmes and Watson
Brilliant, the old ones are always the most fun ⚓
The haunting music, the wonderful actors, the beautiful shadow work, what a perfect mystery, too bad it wasn’t written by Sir Arthur. This is my personal favorite in the series.

The clarity of the film and the use of the lighting is just stellar. The supporting cast is so good you don't even notice that they use a lot of the same actors as secondary characters and villians in numerous tales. This list is not exhaustive. however, these are some of the
many actors who have played Sherlock Holmes on stage,
screen, radio and TV adaptations
And its only rathebone i would watch
@@barryalken4733 : If you do, you will limit yourself of some excellent
renditions of the beloved Sherlock Holmes.
This film is one of a generation of films that shows how times have changed and a country that has completely gone to the dogs unrecognisable from what it once was quiet peaceful and a much more gentle pace
Yes..... my country is completly destroyed and fractured in so many ways that in places i dont even hear English spoken anymore as a language......... R.I.P England 🇬🇧
Back in another 10 years to watch again ... Brilliant.
I feel like we took a HUGE step backwards as a society from these civilized times. So polite, so controlled, sophisticated.
Agreed Sir .
It’s called Subversion

Yes the good old days..even politicians remotely cared for society as a whole..much agreeableness.
Not so nowadays.
People were kinder, polite, and convivial back then..when your fellow man mattered.
What the hells happened..thank the Lord we have the old films to escape from the hell of life today.
I'm a pretty young dude, and i must say that most older movies don't really entertain me much. But I've gotta say i love this!
First watched 'em in the mid 50s! Still love 'em!
Basil Rathbone's majestic voice will always place him above all the other actors AND not just in this role.
I love the way Dr Watson is always bumbleling and mumbleling....... working my way through these movies with these two as Holmes and Watson they're my favourites.
Nice to have films with absolutely no love interest shoehorned in.
Its so true....No chick moments.
Well sherlock shouldn't he was a sexual but guy Ritchie made Downey's a loved up action hero lol
OR sucking and fucking.
Just man who love there fellow.
OH f*ck yes!
Give me a creepy night . ALONE in the Idaho Mountains .. Deep snow.. No Help . Alone!!! Sherlock Holmes is on the case!!!
My favorite thing about these movies is how murderers are treated as, like, feral cats or something. "You two can go play in the sand all you like. I'm going to stay right here to catch the murderer" 😂 it's so charming and fun.
I use to watch this when i was a little girl with my mom on PBS this Sherlock Holmes movie 🎥 came on Friday only and now my dad's gone and my mom passed away 3 years later i was here in Kahoka Missouri's when they both passed away 👍
Excellent, really enjoyed this one. Watson didn't play the TOTAL chowdah-head and Lestrade cracked me up a few times, thank you 💖
A brilliant movie, had me guessing to the end. These older movies are true works of fine art.
John Ferguson Yes, and they didn't need mega budgets to make entertaining movies.
These films with Basil Rathbone are the best thing on youtube. I just wish they had made more of them. Such a good escape from all the woes this world is going through!!!
To say nothing of the woes the world was going through when these movies were made.
Indeed.....
I couldn't agree more...as the craziness continues.
I wish too I watch them n old movie of 30 n 40s
This has the famous Clouseau lines too - "I suspect everyone and no-one," and "Now we're getting somewhere!"
Beautifully constructed in the true spirit of the time and a long forgotten way of life. What a shame.
Thomas Elliott I agree. Sigh...
A perfect murder mystery!! Thank you for posting and sharing this! Two thumbs way up!!
Basil Rathbone ruined Sherlock Holmes for me. And by that I mean I have never been able to watch anyone else play Holmes. I watched these movies' as a child in the 1960's and he simply became Holmes for me.
I have tried watching modern adaptations and I have no doubt they have their qualities. But I simply can't get into anyone but Basil Rathbone playing the role. Don't know whether to love him or hate him for that.
Have you heard this pair in their 1940s radio version of Holmes? Great stuff!
I grew up watching these versions of Holmes and Watson. I honesty did know any other versions existed. So as yourself Rathbone will always be Holmes to me.
Watching my favourite crime buster and his sidekick during the Covic-19 lockdown in Malaysia. A BIG thank you to all the frontliners worldwide. God help us all!🙏😔🙏
It's my favorite movie too ! my prayers with u

Haven't watched this excellent film for two years. Enjoying it just as much as ever. September 2022.
I love the detail of the fire shadows at 2:55 on the backs of the chairs, great attention and direction... thank you for these golden reels from the past!!
My all time favourite Holmes and Watson. Love 'em both and really enjoy their movies.
Classic gem, which will never be forgotten, top class actors and their impeccable acting 🎩🌹
Lol
The acting is awful
The writing, acting, directing, it's a classic. 👍🏽
@@miapdx503 Absolutely🌹
Rathbone WAS Sherlock. Also loved Jeremy Brett as the wonderful sleuth! Just wonderful actors.
Brett was a beast too
@doctorwho0077 so
M4Life, I too think of Rathbone as the best SH and it's good to see someone else thinks so as well.
My problem with the Rathbone Sherlock Holmes movies was how stupid they made Watson.
Brett was the reel larry holmes
Who's watching in 2019 👍
A certain professor named Moriarty sits motionless, & knows well the quiver of each of the thousands of radiations, and now stations, that lead to the center of his web (and his website, moriartycriminalmastermind.com). He is watching. Never a sylph, he could certainly not have been described as an itsy-bitsy spider since Holmes went off to the Hexagon Retirement Castle. Moriarty sends out for a lot of pizza, the only reminder of an hourglass about his aspect the crimson representation of one on the back of his leather biker vest. MORIARTY'S watching, clicker in hand.
-----He freezes & backs up a lot, on his scenes.
Indeed, I am... And I am really thrilled to find such gem ! I also watched The Hound of the Baskeville which I highly recommend (Sorry, I'm trying to emulate the British speech !) I am teaching English and I advised my students to watch these movies so that they would improve their listening skills... They told me that they could not watch a black and white film. Moreover, they pointed out that "there is not much blood and suspense " ! And they are only 16 !!!
I m waching daily Sherlock Holmes sériés
And im having funny moment
Be cool and take it easy
As Holmes said
And guess what yr right i both play x box and loving Holmes ans de whatson
Gold luck
The best Holmes & Watson ever to grace the silver screen !!
So atmospheric. Really does feel like the Scottish coast. Hard to believe it was filmed in Hollywood.
My favorite Sherlock Holmes duo. Thanks for the upload.

Thanks for the uploads-are there more?
I loved these as a kiddo and they stand the test of time...!!
One of my childhood faves - I still have the Collected Works of Sherlock Holmes and read them from time to time.
david
