"Rammstein is bigger than the genre itself." I think that's the best way of summarizing their success.

Sorry I cant like your comment, youre at 666 likes but I have to let you know that I agree 100%.
I think an important aspect that is not noted by the lyrics here 3:03 is that they have a polyvalence of meanings - they use German words, which can have multiple meanings depending on the context without giving you the context. In other words, they mean all the meanings at once and perhaps none of the meaning at once - because they are "plastic words" in the Pörksenian sense (Penn State University Press, 2004). If you ignore German orthography, and merely focus on phonemes - Rammstein uses words that sound like other words (homophones) - "Du hast mich" could also be "Du haßt mich," They also do a lot of play on words, use metaphors and idioms. That is their genius. A lot gets lost in translation, which makes their lyrics appear simplistic when they really are extremely complex.
Exactly 💯
Sexy
Ma man, yo comment belongs to the top, i mean, i speak german myself and never realized how they use lyrics, so: thanks man
The way he sings "Du hast" sounds like you'd say "Du hasst"(you hate) in german, especially with this aggression. For as long as he just repeats "Du hast mich" (You hate me), the meaning really hangs in the balance. It is only once he gets to "Du hast mich gefragt" that it becomes clear.(You have asked me)
Set's the mood, to say the least.
As a German, I could not upvote this comment more! Great context acknowledging Ramstein's lyrical dexterity and playfulness with words, double entendre and imagery!
I'm a 71yr old fan. Teaching my grandkids about this great band.
My old man is the same age and even he has some respect for rammstein
Great job!!! I'm doing the same with my teens
From the German point of view it's also really interesting that the thing I like the most about Rammstein is completely lost on international audiences: their lyrics. Aside from Till sounding really fantastic, he's also a really talented poet (he actually even published poetry over the years). The themes and stories are really interesting, mature, well told and offer some really great insight into the human condition. They are often told from the perspective of some interesting, complex and sometimes deranged character, which is a fact that often gets overlooked by critics: the lyrics are not from the point of view of Rammstein or Till, but from a character.
And as a fan of literature I can't help but notice the influence of classic German literature and poetry. A lot of the lyrics are really similar in style and rhyme scheme to German poets like Goethe or Schiller (they even referenced some classic works in their songs, e.g. Roter Sand references Effi Briest, Haifisch references Brecht, Dalai Lama references Goethe). If you took certain Rammstein lyrics, mixed them up with poems by aforementioned poets and asked someone to determine which were written by whom, I guarantee you that he would be completely unable to do so consistently.
I really like that Rammstein is so popular outside of Germany and they have a lot of qualities to justify that, but it's a bit of a shame that Till's poetry gets lost in translation.
I swear to god, i was looking for your comment.
It's a shame that too little people actually care to look into the more poetic context and meaning of their songs.
Cheers from Swamp-Germany (more commonly known as the Netherlands)! :D
^^^ ich auch
Completely agree. Understanding the lyrics and all that word play is essential and brings it to the next level....
Well said and I couldn't agree more. Once you get into those lyrics (i'm czech, but luckily today it's no problem to find a translated lyrics) you get a whole new experience. Those songs you skipped before get a new meaning and deliver message you weren't aware of before. My favourite example: Steim um steim ;)
I’m so so so happy I study German because these lyrics are fantastic! Been a fan for years now. It is sad that the English translations lose the emotion and sub meanings.

Its so stupid to say German is a brutal language i mean every language sounds brutal if you shout every word
yeah everyone thinks germans automaticly scream their language but literally every german person ive met is very chill
its simple. languages with more vowels sound softer, the ones with more consonants sound harder. most extremes I'd say are french and russian
In latvian butterfly is "Taurenis". Shout it out loud and it sounds angry.
People should watch german tv programs and then, say if it's brutal or not. I mean, if you watched Deutsche Wielle's news German you would know German can sound just sexy.
It sounds very definitive, rough even. English sounds very smoothed out in comparison.

eclipse English is not really sufficient for German poetry. Tried to translate some of my fav German songs into English for friends - they just sounded flat. There’s simply a deeper meaning to them in German, one which can’t be translated so easily.
@@ntk8787 yea its definitely weird and explainable
seems to be the case with most foreign music though - rammstein was the only one i did look up however and only after like 2 decades due to a friend telling me to
Personally i never pay any mind to the words of a song, its all about the voice matching the music. The words are lost to me unless i specifically pay attention but if i do that then the music goes in the background if you know what i mean. I prefer the latter.
I went to german school so I knew the language but I started really like german when I started listening rammstein , I love Till Lindemanns accent, he is amazing :D

True but that doesn’t tease apart the WHY of the band’s Dopeness... how did they become what they are...
And maybe that doesn’t even matter, because you don’t focus on analyzing the band you just experience the music. Alles anders macht nichts...
That's the problem with you people today. You like to analyze everything. You do not feel.
Almost 8 minutes summarized in one sentence, well done!
"Keine Lust" doesn't really translate to "I don't feel like it..." it's more like "I have no desire."
Also "Lust" in German can really mean "lust".
It loosely implies either meaning though, depending on context.
Languages can be idiomatic as much as literal so translating is not so linear.
@@j_freed Certainly true. I just feel like the translation here is a bit too simplified. It doesn't really capture the depth of the lyrics.
@@andreasrademacher5715 it could be lust or desire, whatsoever. The other way around, "lust" in English could also mean "Begierde" aside from "Lust".
It means "I can't be bothered" - it has nothing to do with lust or desire!
Simple, they are unique. There is so much real pain in their music that you can't help but stop what you doing and listen. It's captivating. They have an upside to them and a funny side, but the painful side is where they truly shine. Some of it is truly heart breaking and I love them for it. Rammstein is life, very few bands can capture that

@Hey Zeus Edgy
The struggle of hearing European words in English speaking accents is too great. I wince when I hear people pronounce the city of Turku as "Tyrrkuu". It's "TURku" with the emphasis on the first syllable because that's how Finnish works.
if you are german it sounds even better XD
How did you put this comment in then?

I think the real key to their enduring appeal is their sense of humor coupled with their willingness to tackle controversial/difficult themes. Bands tend to get overly serious and self important, or they go TOO silly or vapid. They ride the line artfully and have for decades

@Ben Mokriš who are you to say what political beliefs Rammstein fans have? I'm right-wing, not conservative just right-wing/nationalist. I love Rammstein because of the combination of the militaristic guitar riffs and the way Till sings in German, just amazing sounding. Honestly, it's not the language that sounds metal, it's the way the language is spoken. If you yelled "butterfly", it would sound intimidating to a foreigner just as much as schmetterling. Try saying schmetterling like you would say butterfly, it's just as gentle.
True. If I yelled *"BUTTERFLY!"* at an american, it would be more weird and maybe amusing to them, but only because they understand what butterfly means, and the meaning of the word is what infuses the situation with irony and thus makes it funny. I could probably intimidate somebody who doesn't understand English that way. Or, if you aggressively yelled "mariposa" at an English speaker, they'd likely be intimidated, too, not because mariposa as a word is harsh, but because a stranger is aggressively yelling at them in Spanish.
I mean funnily enough the example he gives right after that is hier kommt die sonne which is much more melodic than hard which German is also well suited for
Thank you. I love German, I think it's a beautiful language, but people like to rag on it because it has more guttural sounds than the fancy pants romance languages.
It's just a huge circle jerk that Americans and probably the rest of the world has that German sounds angry. Well of course it does when you try to mimic an ss officer shouting commands. Once you learn it it's a beautiful language.

After seeing them in concert in September, their shows are second to none. The amount of work put into their shows is crazy. No band comes close. Rammstein is in a universe of their own.
I would add "lyrics" to the list, since the lyrics why seemingly straight forward at times always have like a greater depth to them really. There is so much irony, hidden imagery and subtle social and political criticism to it while depicting the obscene nature and conflict of the human mind, at times sheer brutality on the outside but the deeper meaning makes them relatable and personal, showing in merciless "in your face" way that we have a part in that grotesque nature.
But then I realized based on how many fans word wide probably never understood a word of that Till sings, the lyrics are probably not the reason Rammstein is popular, even though they might be very important to a more involved audience.
I agree. And I worry that it comes across as slightly "snobbish" or "Oh, you don't understand the deeper level maaaaan" but you are absolutely correct. And I think, unfortunately, the dude that is narrating this video is one of the people that doesn't actually really get it.
Take their most "popular" song... I bet there's millions of people who would say Du Hast is their favourite song, yet aren't able at all to articulate what it's actually about, and that's a shame.

If you listened and understood the lyrics, "Engels" say it sucks to be one. Cheers
I’m a Boomer who’s constantly amazed, astounded & in awe of Rammstein, even more so to learn they’ve never had a lineup change
Keep it coming leute!
Bro....those 10 points nailed it!
Couldn't agree more & they're the reason I discovered the German Metal scene years ago.
Even learnt a lot of the language thanks to their music too...LOL
Try to shout "Papillon" like he shouted "Schmetterling" and you know why it sounds brutal or harsch.
I don't know about Papillon but the word Schmetterling has schmetter in it, which translates to smash. That sounds kinda more brutal than butter- fly, even without the pronounciation.

"Look, I'm old enough to remember when 'Du Hast' came out!" OMG, Methuselah, did you see dinosaurs, too?!
Yeah, I turned 40 this year and have a 14 year old who has been doing the 'Til Hammer' since he was 5 xD
is Aphelion by chance after Tristania's Aphelion?
I love Rammstein, their so good when working out at the gym or knitting! 😁
Because they sound amazing and dont care about criticisms.
actually, they do.
They were consistantly labeled a right-wing group. thats why they made "Links 2,3,4"
@@stableape2967 understandable. I wouldn't to be associated with it if it didn't describe me.
@@stableape2967 So Rammstein is kind of 'Neo - Nazi' something??

Ich schmeiß mich weg hahaha :D:D
same with song name Deutschland, [DoitschLEND]
Lmao xDD
Danke!
It's only rolled if you're going for the accent.
Even their newest album is an absolute banger.
A number of years ago, I had an online friend from Germany who was very into music and he would share with me songs and videos from different artists he was into. One day he sent me a video from Rammstein. I really liked when I heard and decided to search for more from them. The more I found, the more I was blown away. They had a unique sound and a great look. I developed quite the obsession with them for a number of years. I saw them in play live several times, including one time when I travelled from South Florida to New York City to see them play Madison Square Garden. My obsession has cooled over the years as obsessions often do, but I still appreciate their music as well as the experiences I've had and the friends I made as a result of discovering this one of a kind group..
They were arrested in 1998 during KoRn's Family Values tour.
Rammstein rule and I'm loving Deutschland and Radio. Bring on the new album! 🤘🏻
Radio is better imo

I saw them in Las Vegas in 2017 with Koran and Stone Sour as the opening act. The place was old out! Packed to the rim.
@@zigzack4144 I was also at that show
Most money I ever paid for concert tickets was Rammstein in 2017. I know I got a steal when the show was over. Best. Live. Show. Ever.
Rob Johnson Same! I was in Las Vegas with Korn and Stone Sour as the opening act. Most expensive price I’ve ever paid for seats but the view was amazing and their performance was the most insane thing I have ever seen.
Unfortunately viagogo motherfuckers make tons of money on Rammstein and other music, I wish viagogo would all die.
Same I ended up with second hand tickets to see them live in Chicago 10 years ago,, SO WORTH IT!!!
@@zigzack4144 I was at that show as well! I have been a fan since I lived in Germany. Their songs hold a special place with me. I was stuck in the mosh pit at that show but was totally worth it!
I'll see them in 20 days in Gelsenkirchen, Germany. Paid 89 Euros for the ticket. I'm blessed.
I introduced my son to them. Took him to a concert his senior year of high school. He's only a year older than Du Hast.
Just got to see Rammstein in San Antonio, and wow... The greatest musicians to exist. I adore them so much!
Parent (62) here.
When my two than boys made me listen to ''Spieluhr'' 20 years or so ago I was blewn away.
This is...Goethe, Novalis and Rilke.
German classic poetry meets heavy metal.
It is certainly not my kind of music, but it also certainly is quality.
These guys were and are top musicians and top artists.
Till Lindemann is really into poetry. Not only are songs like " Dalai Llama" a reinterpretation of the " Erlkönig" ( Erlking) by Goethe himself. Till also published his own poetry some years ago. Based on a fair share of their text writing, they must be really into poetry.
when i was 15 (36 now) i gave my mother a rammstein cd for here to listen. She fell in love with them. Going to take her to the next concert (tickets r bought) . She says this is the best present i could ever give her
Just saw the show in Prague. It's the best show in history. It's impeccable, overwhelming, sublime. You will never want to see another band's live ever. They ruined it for everyone else. Magnum Opus!
@@sebastep I really cant wait. When it comes for them ruining it for everyone else i say, Ja mach das!

I'm an old lady and I love this band. If I had grandkids I would be turning them on to Rammstein.
I’m a parent and it pisses my kids of that I listen to rammstein

Rock on Rammstein! One of a kind band!
I remember hearing Du Hast back when they came out and was blown away. I had to get the CD and jam out, I became and instant fan.
Just recently found them on RUclips and im hooked, love their visuals, their sound, their style
There Paris concert footage is a god damn masterpiece of cinematic glory in every form. It truely is a work of art and will last the test of time.
I’ve listened to that live album countless times. Incredible!
Still waiting for a single English speaking person to correctly pronounciate "RAMMSTEIN".
Scion of Madness no, Rammshtine 😂 the Double M is spoken fast
@@SkyzzV_ Rerereraeshtin?
Scion of Madness I am from Germany, I think I know how to pronounce Rammstein, and it’s a fast an rough word. The English pronounciation is just too soft and slow. Think about it bro
It also has an hard r
@Scion of Madness These audio file people don't speak the mm as slow as Americans do.. You might think you pronounce it the right way but you don't.. Just like Germans pronouncing squirrel. For us it seems good but for you it sounds ridiculous..
53 and I'm still listening to them. I love the band.
I first heard Rammstein when I bought the Matrix movie soundtrack. "Du Hast" was one of the songs on it, and I instantly became a fan of the band.
I first heard Rammstein in the beginning of the movie xXx, singing Feuer Frei.
Same, i ran out and bought Sehnsucht right after!
Kitten Lyric That's dating you, man, if you remember the Lost Highway soundtrack, lol. I remember that, too. "Heirate mich" was on there, wasn't it?
My first Rammstein album was a cassette copy of Sehnsucht that I stole from the local Walmart, lol. I bought it later on CD to support the band, and I've bought their other albums, too.
I first heard Du Has on Pandora while listening to Viking metal songs
Speaking as a parent, Rammstein have never pissed me off ;) . Love them.
My parents (65 an70) love Rammstein!
No big secret , they have great songs with wonderful memorable melodies.
The parent comment is ridiculous. I'm 59 years young and I've adored their music since the beginning. The best.
Because they are talented obviously
And weird as fuck😍
When i first saw the video for Keine Lust, i thought they were actually obese😂
@@octo.lina69 thats what they do with their videos
So are so many talented musicians that never get a fraction of the recognition that rammstein has so I disagree. They're just that perfect level of heavy for most people where there's distortion and it baarely touches the label "heavy" but in an extremely safe, poppy and inoffensive way, relying on imagery instead to offend just like manson. Their riffs are beyond basic and accessible, not that they should be nonstop shredding but I don't think I've ever heard their guitar player play a 16th note. Ever. Their drums melt into the background instantly they're so boring, and their singer is good but in a classicly trained way which isn't that appealing to me. They were cool when i was 12 but they're a yawn fest now.
Selling Soul 5 Bucks it’s your opinion man, but you definitely can’t say that they don’t have talent, at least in art and stage presence...
They are known worldwide for their creativity, heavy music, poetic lyrics (most of the time), but as some members said before, they can totally work without provoking
@@nellevw2950 I never said they wern't talented. Just that they didn't get big off raw talent because there are plenty of other talented and arguably more talented artists who never get exposure. Stage presence is nice but I have no interest in seeing them so it's not a factor, just their music itself. Their shows do look cool though but again, nothing to do with their composition skills. They aren't even that heavy anyways. I guess if all you listen to is billboard top 100 they seem heavy. They were heavy back when the only rock bands I knew were 3 days grace, slipknot, linkin park etc but these days I'm more into technical death metal, slamming bdm and some math/prog rock so it feels like they aren't heavy anymore and what they write is suuuper basic. All they have is pyrotechnics and a good clean singer, every other band member sucks at what they do.
Oh and they seem to be way better directors than musicians so there's that. And yes this is all 100% my opinion, just felt like getting it out there.
