As always, great review Lisa. Just downloaded 8.1 today on my 925 and am really enjoying it. I'm amazed at the sheer size of this update. If it wasn't for Microsoft wanting to remain consistent with their numbering across all platforms, they could have easily called this Windows Phone 9.0 with all the improvements they packed into it. A huge and welcomed update from WP.
Nice review! I would love to see a side by side comparison of Blackberry 10.2.1 and Windows Phone 8.1. Both companies are upping their game for people to take notice.
How did you get your Music app to load the artists so fast? I have to wait 10+ seconds until they're loaded. Also, resuming apps seems to be still really quite wonky, quite often I'm just greeted with the background colour of the app I resumed. And notifications seem to be barely working once more, WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger often don't give me any notifications even when I receive several messages by different people. But 8.1 is still in development so I just hope they'll fix that because everything else is just fantastic.
2:40, cortana stores it in the phone so I wont be worried about it.. even if "she" does store it on a server I don't see why everyone is worried because what about Facebook, your literally storing your photo messages and everything in a server and nobody seems to worry about that. in fact Facebook owns the picture's that u put on it.. I think windows phone 8.1 is a huge approach from Microsoft, it maybe not as good as ios or android, personally I think that it is better than android, window phone is highly optimized os, it runs proper smoothly on a low end phone like nokia lumia 520, and if it was android there would be atleast a few crashes..
As far as the Cortana software went with setting alarms and the like I was sort of hoping there'd be an option to say *_'wake me...when you need me'_* Not sure how long that would let me sleep in...
when do you think 8.1 will be available for icon update. i checked on the microsoft website and they said that after so long even today 8.1 is still in testing for the icon. so do you think that will even come out at all or some time soon within the nest few months?
Simply put, I'm just happy that Microsoft is fighting to stay in the game. With Windows 8.1 I think they deserve now the third spot abandoned by Blackberry. Still, I welcome other gamers like Tizen, or Firefox OS or Ubuntu Mobile. The more players in the field the more each will try to out-innovate the other. Ultimately, the consumer is the winner and get to decide.
I love lumia devices and I love the ecosystem, it's always smooth and minimalistic... but the deal breaker are the limited apps that WP provides you with... However Liza your reviews are wonderful!!! it's always a joy to watch your videos :-D
hi, the video was useful and i have few questions to ask. Can you tell me how much internet data will an OS update consume and will Cortana work offline. If so what can it do offline?
It looks like MS's answer to the "app problem" will be universal apps for Windows, Xbox and Windows Phone OS's. This will open the gates for developers to start making apps for all MS platforms. Universal apps will also provide the same experience across all MS platforms. This will also be a great selling point to join or switch to the Windows.
Nice review. Being a Blackberry devotee I would find the lack of a Hub difficult to do without. I don't pay games on my phones as most chew through too much data. Besides my Blackberries, I have a Note 2 and have found Android to be a pretty straightforward, intuitive OS. With the arrival of fitness wearables and accompanying software, I think I'd find it difficult to abandon. I'm tossing up between the S5 and the Note 4 when my contract runs out in October.
I had a windows phone back when it was windows 7. The only thing I didn't like was the proprietary software needed, which was zune, to move your files from your computer to your phone. Is Zune still needed to do this or did Microsoft get rid of this?
Been gone for quite a while now. All WP 8 devices can be used/accessed like a USB-drive, to drag and drop files. There's also dedicated programs you can use but there's not need for it what so ever.
Watched a few extensive reviews and switched from my beloved Note 2 to a Lumia 1520. A few essential apps are missing because I was neck deep into google services, making a shift to their microsoft analogs now. However, a few niche apps are missing. I would really like them to come (back) to windows phone. Otherwise, the phone is really pretty and the screen is fabulous. Installing 8.1 has helped because notification bar is a must!. Not an app junkie. I really hope cortana turns out to be as useful and intuitive as google now.
Windows Phone 8.1 is a free upgrade. Phone OS upgrades have so far always been free, the only thing you have to worry about is whether the hardware is eligible (capable) of getting the upgrade.
Timeline: 5:20 .... Estimated: 6 days 23 hours with 84% charge.. now that's probably not true.. how long does it last with full battery charged in real time?
Lisa, really enjoy your reviews but I must say you left out a ton of changes! One off top of head, finally have separate volume controls! Yes I know other have had this but big update for wp 8.1 so many I couldn't list here. Really dropped ball. Thanks as always
Main reason I stick with Google and Android is for Google Music. I mean I can upload my entire library and stream it anywhere. iPhone and Windows Phone have nothing comparable.
Nice review. I'm not sold on Windows phones just yet, even though I'm a Windows PC user. I've had an iPhone and now Galaxy Note 2, and just love Android.
It is kind of ironical that Android is more like Windows than Windows Phone is to Windows. I hope that Windows can bring back some features from their old Windows CE OS like the File Explorer that could give Windows Phone more functionality.
as a fellow user of Note 2 + Gear 2.. I must say I would trade the few cool extras Samsung has, for the solid build of Lumia terminals. Gear 2 is awesome but Samsung`s phones plastics.. I had enuff of this !
I have to say that I might try out the windows phones and change from android as it seems they have made a lot of improvements and cortana actually seems like it can help you a lot more than Siri or Google now.
Anybody can download 8.1 just download the Preview For Developers app and register a a developer and you can downlpad 8.1 i have my lumia 925 with 8.1 and i absolutely love it

i paused the video and checked for Cortana - i found no porn star by that name :( . Anyway WP8.1 is great, i hope we'll see a Lumia 1020 successor this autumn
I think since Cortana in Windows Phone 8.1 hit the news in a big way last week, search results now mostly bring up the phone OS and not the star. After my friend told me last week, I googled and saw some... well, you know... NSFW stuff.
@Jaysann22 Actually ever since I'm using Windows 8.1 on my Surface Pro I'm really considering Windows Phone for my next Smartphone. I used to be an Android guy all over.
I keep wanting to play around with the nokia lumina but it just seems a windows phone will just chew up your data plan. Sure you can turn off all these windows but that defeats the mainstay of the phone.
A plus for Windows and Apple phones is the OS upgrade across most of its devices. Android still has major problems in this department. Other than that, I like Android better.
I always thought that windows phone was playing catch-up to iOS but I can see from this review that in a lot of ways iOS now needs to catch-up to windows phone!
Don't wanna be the guy that goes crazy over pronouncing something wrong but you've been saying Cortana wrong. Its cor-tah-nah :) just a heads up for next time :)
I don't know whyyyyy but it reallllly bugs me as well. I'm not that guy who trolls but it just... Well that's not how you say Cortana. But other than that amazing review! You are my go to person for all things tech! Great job!
WP8.1 is massively better than WP8. There's nothing wrong with WP at this point except for a few apps missing. Those apps will arrive. Great job, Microsoft!
I don't really care for the amount of apps, I don't really care about Cortana - but as much as I want to like this platform (love the design for one) I just don't get why Micorsoft is simply refusing to fix some issues which have been there since the start of WP7. The whole volume settings are a mess - yeah it got a bit better but there still isn't a possiblity of soud profiles included or even a way to quickly toggle ring+vibrate/vibrate/silent without diving into the menu. Having to change the vibrate part in the system settings is infuriating after the first 20 or so times I have done it that day. And there are countless other stupid and frustrating design flaws like that in the system from day one. Nokia has build decent business phones for DECADES and knows a thing or two about that, I just can't get my head around the fact that MS simply refuses to learn from their experience. Using Nokias expertise in mobile and MSs expertise in the business IT world they could dominate the whole market, instead they don't get their heads out of their a*se and half-as*edly try to ape Android/iOS without any clear cut plan.... I just don't get it.....
Not really sure about what you mean by sound profiles, but lumias provide a graphic equalizer and sound presets (rock, bass boost, etc) Also, you can set all ring+vibrate/vibrate/silent settings on the popup that appears when you press volume up/down, including the "vibrate part", really no need to dive into settings (in 8.1, this is)
Ricardo Caldeira I don't mean equalizers - sound profiles were "invented" back in the 90s by Nokia, you could switch easily and quickly between several predefined ringtone profiles (individual tone, volume, vibration settings in vaying degrees of granularity) in a second by pressing the power button. Dead simple and brilliant. Blackberry and Windows Mobile had this for a long time and it can be hacked into Android as well. Sadly missing here.... Also you can't simply set all ring+vibrate/vibrate/silent settings in the pop up (unless there is some sort of Ninja trick I havn't figured out) - you can, when the vibrate is toggled on in the system settings, switch between ring+vibrate and just vibrate but to turn it dead silent you have to go back into the system menu (then ring or silent is available in the popup). Need vibrate again? Back in the Menu you go.... It's infuriating when you have to do that several times a day and despite being a completly braindead solution MS holds on to this since day 1. Solving this by an App is also not possible because of the restrictions MS imposes on developers. All the touchscreen fart-app junk is lovely but phone wise even the predecessor (Windows Mobile) actually was a better and more functional system. Both MS and Nokia declared Windows Phone to be the true successor of Windows Mobile and Symbian respectively but actually deliver a system with much less functionality than either of them (despite being a decade younger!) without any intentions of improving on that... Sad really
Sorry for the misunderstanding on the sound profiles part, I agree with you - it was really useful on my previous nokias and would be a nice addition to WP :) I'd argue that the new quiet hours feature can act as a different profile, but outside of ceasing all phone interaction it's not that customisable.. About the ring/vibration settings, I'm referring to the new volume menu in the 8.1 preview. You can change ringer and media/app volumes separately and also toggle vibration on/off in a dedicated button
dongerdo83 The 8.1 update fixed the ring volume settings and it's now easy to switch from ring to ring+vibrate to vibrate to silent without having to physically go into settings. When you toggle the volume control on the side, the volume bar drops down from the top and there's an arrow on the right side. Click the arrow and you can control all volume settings from this menu. I find it pretty quick and easy.
Lisa, oh dear, sweet, Lisa. WHO, ON EARTH told you about a porn star called Cortana? And WHY would they tell you such a thing? Oh god, I'm dying of the laughter. And lastly, WHY did you need to tell us?!?!?!?!?!?! Bahahahahahaha!!!! Lastly, your comment about "bit being an expert in that" absolutely KILLED me! XD
Wow some of your geek friends said there was a porn star named Cortana. O.o. I was expecting you to say she was a AI in the Halo series... That was so random
Your "gimmick" is another's effective marketing strategy. What would you suggest as a better alternative? Regarding the phrasing, it was only released just recently. Give it a little time.
Do you EVER give a negative review of a device that truly sucks or you do not like??? I enjoy your reviews and you seem intelligent and articulate, however, I find it hard to believe that you enjoy or positively view EVERY device you've reviewed.... It some ways, it somewhat minimizes your credibility with having an overall positive review for every device. Honestly, I dont know anyone that likes Windows 8. EVERYONE I know that has used it, owned it, played with it, etc, absolutely hates it.....
calm down ... its lumia series is awesome ... just coz you hate it .. doesnt mean everyone does ... i know a whole lot of people who use it ... i m not saying its the best .... its not as good as android or iOS .... and lumia series has one of the best cameras *not the best* so chill ...
uh... first off, how did you perceive haste or panic in my text? Didnt think I needed to clarify, but I'm already quite calm. Uh...thanks for checking? ugh..... X[ Secondly, you missed my point entirely.... I had just stated that Lisa seems to give a positive review for every single device she reviews. Its good to discuss the positive aspects about a device, whether the device is overall good or bad, Im not arguing that, but Lisa seems to praise every device she's reviewed and while I want solid unbiased information in tech reviews, I ALSO want professional personal opinions. Whether its truly positive or negative. So overall, I was saying to LISA, that she needs to be more critical and opinionated in her reviews. THATS IT. so.... YOU chill...
Lisa may do what others I personally know have done and simply showcase the products that are good and choose to leave out the ones that are bad. It's a good mix of being truthful while not offending manufacturers, Whether she does that or not, I actually appreciate a positive review, but more I appreciate her throughout and detailed videos :-)
duncan watchtech Okaaaay.... all of that wasnt necessary... Dafuq?? Do you work for Microsoft??? Who the hell said ANYTHING about Android??? I never said what my personal preferences were for an OS. I ONLY said MOST people that I've known to mess with Windows 8 said they did not like it. I've never played with Windows 8 and probably never will. I personally dont have an opinion on Windows 8 if you MUST know.... The only point, and I mean ONLY point I was trying to make was that LISA, the tech reviewer, should be more critical of ALL the devices she reviews. AND include more of her personal opinions. Negative or positive. Let me say it again. MY only point, I repeat, my ONLY POINT, was for Lisa to be more critical of ALL devices reviewed. Is that clear enough??? Shit....get a grip.
MagusShadowX I can agree with that. I appreciate a tech reviewer to showcase the positive features of a device, no matter how crappy it may be. However, it would be nice to hear their personal preferences for an OS and device and why. Its not about "offending manufacturers", its just that some people enjoy getting a professional's personal opinion when deciding which device they want to purchase. When you present ALL your devices in nothing but a positive light, it makes a purchasing decision somewhat difficult.
Windows phone is so much smoother than android aka lagdroid or shit os aka iOS most people are sheep and follow a trend I have all 3 platforms and I still prefer my windows phone over iOS or android any day of the year why live tiles no lag apps Dont crash and also I use a lot of ms services . And the app gap is closing very fast Yes wp8.1 may not have candy crush saga or song pop but if I want games I have a 3ds xl Xbox 360 ps3 ps1+2 Sega Saturn & a nes so I'm set for games. At the end of the day choice is good and with windows phone it keeps apple & Google on there toes to keep the prices fair so we Dont have a monopoly Like apple and Samsung have going on. So you will either love or hate windows phone but people shouldn't diss before they own it . A play in the phone store DOESN'T COUNT !!!!!!
facebook, whatsapp and instagram apps arent mature yet....I'd love windows phone to become one of the great OSs
*cough* tumblr *cough* that app needs a serious update.
All Thor apps are perfect today, don't know what you're talking about.
As always, great review Lisa. Just downloaded 8.1 today on my 925 and am really enjoying it. I'm amazed at the sheer size of this update. Thanks for the review Lisa. This is making me reconsider Windows Phone for my next acquisition.
Loving this update on my Lumia 1520

is there in the action center, a setting that allows me to turn the flash on of off? just like apple and android OS´s
As far as the Cortana software went with setting alarms and the like I was sort of hoping there'd be an option to say *_'wake me...when you need me'_*
Not sure how long that would let me sleep in...

Thanks for the tip on Cortana. Googling her now. 😆
Soooo, when is the release date for wp8.1?
@JonEricksonChan Are you sure you are not running WP8.1 without the proper firmware ?bcos my battery is good.

Does anyone know when Cortana is going to be available worldwide? Is the current US restriction due to localization issues?

Why move away from hubs? That is what attracted me to wp to begin with i dont get it. It is a great feature for organization
Guys i want ask when the wp 8.1 coming for nokia lumia 625
Cortana was the woman from the Microsoft series of games called Halo wasn't she ?
No the game was created by Bungie. I wouldn't give Microsoft any credit they just acted like Hitler with the games.
matthew clouser Ok my friend point taken but you sorta see where i was coming from ??
Question for Lisa or anybody: Does any windows phone get a free upgrade to windows phone 8.1 or is it something you have to buy?
All devices with Windows Phone 8.0 and up will be able to install 8.1 for free, it then depends on the carrier to push the update
Ricardo Caldeira
Thank you kindly!
Windows Phone 8.1 is a free upgrade. Phone OS upgrades have so far always been free, the only thing you have to worry about is whether the hardware is eligible (capable) of getting the upgrade.
How can I update my nokia lumia 625 on 8.1 ws? TX!
Timeline: 5:20 .... Estimated: 6 days 23 hours with 84% charge.. now that's probably not true..
how long does it last with full battery charged in real time?
@Ch'ngSeaneUU its out just sign up for preview for developers and download
I currently own a Note 3 and think I may take the plunge with windows this month :)

I would love to give windows phone a proper go but unfortunately the lack of proper google apps is a real no go for me.
ian walker maybe in six months or so they'll have figured it out.
Lets hope so ay ? If they do i will definitely give the platform another try.

Cant wait for this update on my 1020. Just hope Microsoft and Nokia bring out another high end device this summer.
Its veeeeerrryyy easy to get it on any phone. Im using it now on my 920

Lolwut240 How do we upgrade?

@Marco Carrillo Microsoft did get rid of that. Just open File Explorer and transfer stuff.

but can you make a playlist on your computer & put it on a phone? That's the reason why I went back to iphone
Nice review, Lisa, as usual...however personally I do not like windows OS. Just me.
I always thought that windows phone was playing catch-up to iOS but I can see from this review that in a lot of ways iOS now needs to catch-up to windows phone!

Not really sure about what you mean by sound profiles, but lumias provide a graphic equalizer and sound presets (rock, bass boost, etc)
Also, you can set all ring+vibrate/vibrate/silent settings on the popup that appears when you press volume up/down, including the "vibrate part", really no need to dive into settings (in 8.1, this is)
Ricardo Caldeira I don't mean equalizers - sound profiles were "invented" back in the 90s by Nokia, you could switch easily and quickly between several predefined ringtone profiles (individual tone, volume, vibration settings in vaying degrees of granularity) in a second by pressing the power button.
Sad really
Sorry for the misunderstanding on the sound profiles part, I agree with you - it was really useful on my previous nokias and would be a nice addition to WP :)
I'd argue that the new quiet hours feature can act as a different profile, but outside of ceasing all phone interaction it's not that customisable..
XD
Siri is actually the pornstar. And she was making films before the iPhone 4S was released. She's very upset that a phone feature stole her name.
I can't wait to switch to windows phone from android.
@Jaysann22
Ive been using it for 5months after using android and ios and it is the best by far, better performance battery life
Wow some of your geek friends said there was a porn star named Cortana. O.o. I was expecting you to say she was a AI in the Halo series... That was so random
love windows phone 8.1 you don't have to be a developer lol .. but I love it
I know you'll be surprised because you're brainwashed but I find that BlackBerry 10.2.1 is by far the best OS out right now.
Why does Cortana sound like a damn speak and spell? Fix it, Microsoft.
Cortana is still in beta. This isn't the finished product yet.
I said that and got attacked lmao idiots on here
Calling it Cortana is a gimmick because it's not her voice at all and even the phrasing isn't all the way there... ugh Microsoft
Your "gimmick" is another's effective marketing strategy. What would you suggest as a better alternative? Regarding the phrasing, it was only released just recently. Give it a little time.
Actualy it is real cortana voice O.o and it has better sounds better than google now and siri o.O
your just angry because some one gave you a girls hair cut
***** seriously made no sense because it's not her voice .. okay halo? Try again idiot
Erik Butler I think you're just stupid.. your comment proves it
@Jaysann22 speak for yourself than, because I know many many people include I that loves Windows Phone much more than android (I have used both)
Do you EVER give a negative review of a device that truly sucks or you do not like??? I enjoy your reviews and you seem intelligent and articulate, however, I find it hard to believe that you enjoy or positively view EVERY device you've reviewed.... It some ways, it somewhat minimizes your credibility with having an overall positive review for every device. Honestly, I dont know anyone that likes Windows 8. EVERYONE I know that has used it, owned it, played with it, etc, absolutely hates it.....
calm down ...
its lumia series is awesome ...
just coz you hate it .. doesnt mean everyone does ...
i know a whole lot of people who use it ...
i m not saying its the best .... its not as good as android or iOS ....
and lumia series has one of the best cameras *not the best*
so chill ...
uh... first off, how did you perceive haste or panic in my text? Didnt think I needed to clarify, but I'm already quite calm. Uh...thanks for checking? ugh..... X[
Secondly, you missed my point entirely....
It's a good mix of being truthful while not offending manufacturers,
Whether she does that or not, I actually appreciate a positive review, but more I appreciate her throughout and detailed videos :-)
duncan watchtech Okaaaay.... all of that wasnt necessary...
Cort-anna.
Depends on what part of the US you're from (let alone the world). I come from the northeast and say it... well... the way I say it as a result.
MobileTechReview It is Cor-anna, based off the Character from the Halo game franchise, also from Microsoft.
Windows phone is so much smoother than android aka lagdroid or shit os aka iOS most people are sheep and follow a trend I have all 3 platforms and I still prefer my windows phone over iOS or android any day of the year why live tiles no lag apps Dont crash and also I use a lot of ms services .
And the app gap is closing very fast
Yes wp8.1 may not have candy crush saga or song pop but if I want games I have a 3ds xl Xbox 360 ps3 ps1+2
Sega Saturn & a nes so I'm set for games.
At the end of the day choice is good and with windows phone it keeps apple & Google on there toes to keep the prices fair so we Dont have a monopoly
Like apple and Samsung have going on.
So you will either love or hate windows phone but people shouldn't diss before they own it . A play in the phone store DOESN'T COUNT !!!!!!
50 cent?
$1 ?
Nokia ruined their music app.
Now I don't have a good music app to play my music.
Also, there is no porn star that goes by the name cortana.
this is really taking forever to release ughhhh
It's free enjoy :)
