If you decide to use Cortana a lot, you may see a slight decrease, but using her here and there with normal phone use, you won't see much in battery change
Cortana isn't available in the UK yet. However, I have set my phone speech options to the United States so that I can access all of these features. Cortana will be coming to the UK in the future, hopefully not too far in the future though.
Harry Griffiths both Language, Region and Speech need to be set to the US. If you have multiple languages, move English (US) to the top. In the region, you must also have the Regional format to match the phone's language
if you're in the UK, have you had to install the US version to get cortana? If so, does the phone still work correctly (using mobile data or even just texting). I also heard something about the app store not working properly?
Hey grogsy100. You will need to install the US language pack to use Cortana, however everything can be set up for UK currency etc, You will just have a US language pack and speech. It doesn't factory reset your phone and your contacts, app etc are actually stored within the cloud using your Windows Live account meaning you can get them all back if that ever happens but you won't need to worry in this case. As for the Store issue, this was a worldwide issue due to a heavy load of users all at once updating to Windows Phone 8.1 and updating their apps. Microsoft didn't expect this to hit so hard on their servers and they had to boot everything back up but the store is working, it is just the US store if you want to use Cortana for now. I generally don't buy apps so its all good!
Hi MicroTech, Can you tell me what the name the Large Teal Green app is called? Can you download and install the app from the Windows Store? I wanna download that app you have on your Nokia Lumia 920.
The wide green app is called MyStudyLife, a great application to help students manage their university/school timetable, assignments and examination. I highly recommend it for any student!
Since the update, Internet Explorer won't open websites on mobile data. It does open websites over WiFi. Other apps requiring data work fine (like Whatsapp and email) over the mobile data but for some reason I can't open web pages... Anyone else had this problem?
ArmenianSOADfreak Hi, this could be a setting in data sense if you aren't getting any website to load at all on mobile data. There is an option in data sense called "browser data savings". If this is on, it could be restricting access to websites over data due to your data sense settings.
The battery life is about the same as it was before the update. I usually get a full days worth of use, so depending on how much you use your phone, it could need charging sooner than the end of the day.
Hi i own the Lumia 920, and would like to find out how does the WP8.1 OS run on the phone, are they any lags or delays; plus how is the battery consumption because the lumia 920 battery is a major let down
does windows 8.1 eat up a lot of battery on the Lumia 920? i'm waiting for my Lumia 920 to be delivered and i'd like to update it to 8.1, so this is my #1 concern since the 920's battery isn't exactly very big.
If you upgrade to Windows Phone 8.1 directly, without going through the carrier, is it still possible to get Nokia Camera, Nokia Folders, and all the other Nokia apps for the Lumia series?
I like the new features of 8.1. Cortana and the keyboard swipe are impressively accurate. And I like most of the features. It seems like they have taken out the facebook chat integration into the messenger... I don't understand why... that was one of the coolest features of the OS. When talking with Android/iOS users, that was my typical go to. "How do you chat with people on facebook?" ...wait for them to open app... "Oh that's nice, see these 'text messages' ...ya that is facebook chat! :P" Then they just kind of shrunk back a little with jealousy! But now... we seem to have to open the app too... unless I am missing something... Also... I have used Bing for a long time now and it always has been pretty accurate with directions and finding places for me. When I ask Cortana to find places though, she seems to want to send me all over the place... does this happen for you? For example, I was at work, where there is a McDonalds like half a mile down the road. I asked her where the nearest McDonalds was and she said like 3 miles away across town. Then I asked later, and she somehow found one a state away, like 133 miles... While I love the upgrades, like the notification center, I hope they work some things out and bring back the integration features and stuff.
Microsoft unfortunately had to remove integrated third-party features due to them becoming outdated. This is why all Windows Phone 8.1 apps such as the calendar, games, music, video etc. have been pulled out of the core system and are now update-able through the Windows Phone Store. This allows third-parties to tie back into the system through the people hub etc, but using their own applications. I do understand where you are coming from though. They were great features that will be missed.
If you like what you see then I'd definitely give it a good try. Windows Phone is an ever growing platform with many big names starting to bring their apps to the platform.
This comes with the Windows Phone 8.1 update due this summer. If you have the update already, you can change the number of tiles in the settings from the start & theme setting option
HI Thanks for this review, it was very cool to see what's coming to WP8. I have been searching on how to get this update with the Studio app (developer unlock). Butit seems this cant be done without a computer running windows 8 (I have windows 7) to do the unlock (SDK)? Am I missing something? can you help me or point me in the right direction?
Hi! Thanks for watching the video. If you're having problems getting your phone developer unlocked, try these steps: betanews.com/2014/04/14/how-to-install-windows-phone-8-1/ I tried them on a phone of mine that wasn't developer unlocked and managed to get the update.
Do you know that if i install this preview version, when the original is released, would I still get it on my phone through the provider or Nokia like I used to? Thanks!
Yes. These updates are just pre-release updates and aren't the complete finished builds. This means that when the official builds come through the update system in the summer, you will get the Nokia Cyan update if you're using a Nokia device which includes Nokia's updates as well as the complete 8.1 package.
Firdaus Tokimin Check that your Language setting has the US language pack at the top. If not, tap and hold on it to move it up. You may have to download the speech pack. If you go into the speech settings and change it to the US also, it will download Cortana.
Thank you. Could someone tell me, do I have to register to microsoft when I turn on the phone for the first time and can I actually use the phone without registering at microsoft? Also what about the integration of google services in this OS? Thanks in advance
Erik Dimitrov unfortunately, to download applications for your Windows Phone device, you are required to use a Windows Live ID. As for Google services, you can connect your Google email account using the Accounts+Emails feature in Windows Phone however, for all other Google services, your questions can only be answered by asking Google why they won't provide their services for Windows Phone devices. As this is no longer an issue with Microsoft, Google are the ones holding out on bringing their services to the platform unlike Microsoft who are willing to share their services to all devices including Android and iOS. I recommend you try out a Windows Phone using Microsoft services however. You'll find that they work a lot better together!
Dillon Espe hussayn19 this is correct. Your warranty will be void during the time your phone is running the developer preview. However, with the new OS available to devices soon, when you install the full Windows Phone 8.1 OS, your warranty is reinstated.
In some countries and on some phone networks, the FM radio was disabled. Microsoft have now taken it out and into its own separate app that everyone can have regardless of carrier
Jagan Kathir The update to Windows Phone 8.1 should be available soon through the OTA update system in your country. You can check here: @global/support/software-update/wp8-software-update/
Just so you know, the games under the app list isn't a bug. Microsoft have separated the Games application from the core of the phone so that they can push updates to it through the store. The Games app will still show your list of games when you install it from the store, but they are now located in your app list. This is similar to the way that Windows 8 works. It makes it easier for Microsoft.
Updates to Windows Phone 8.1? The update is only available to those on the developer preview program which you can register for by creating a Windows Phone application.
Oh i see, thanks for the reply man ^^ I have the 8.1 developer program update now,but why the cortana in my phone still have the beta sign on the top right corner? Thanks again man ^^
Darryl Ilyasa Cortana will be in Beta for some time until it is feature filled. As it is still a new product from Microsoft, Cortana still needs to learn a lot more from people to tailor results and speech functions.
do first i want to say.. u dont need to register yourself as developer.. i finnaly got update too.. it depends on what country you are.. i updated to win8.1 just because of File manager, but i was very disapointed.. it consume much more(every night to charge it), applications load very very very slow, Music player is very bad.. on win8.0 it searched for new music very fast i didnt even recognize when it did.. now it take a rly long time.. when i scroll list of music it "lags".. they changed a lot of things and also way how u control it, and i rly dont like it.. the whole phone is damn slow.. i did sw reset and already have update for few weeks but i think i will go back to win8.0
Cortana can still do you a Bing search though. It hasn't been removed. It has in fact been updated to search your phone also when you search for something.
i love 8.1, finally windows phone is about equal in many ways to android and iOs
It definitely is! Windows Phone 8.1 is a massive update which has come jam packed with some awesome features. I hope you're enjoying 8.1!
@Olti Drd 3 tile columns are only on phones with the Windows Phone 8.1 update.
How about the batery? .. the consume is the same or is more
If you decide to use Cortana a lot, you may see a slight decrease, but using her here and there with normal phone use, you won't see much in battery change
Great video! But I thought Cortana wasn't avaliable in the UK straight away? Has this changed?
Cortana isn't available in the UK yet. However, I have set my phone speech options to the United States so that I can access all of these features.
Cortana will be coming to the UK in the future, hopefully not too far in the future though.
MicroTech did that but didn't work
Harry Griffiths both Language, Region and Speech need to be set to the US. If you have multiple languages, move English (US) to the top. In the region, you must also have the Regional format to match the phone's language
Great review, mate
Thanks! I'm glad you enjoyed it. Are you using Windows Phone 8.1?
No, I`m on wp 8 for now.

Hi, the cyan update for the lumia 920 lets you choose the color bright green for the live tiles?
Since the update, Internet Explorer won't open websites on mobile data. It does open websites over WiFi. Other apps requiring data work fine (like Whatsapp and email) over the mobile data but for some reason I can't open web pages... Anyone else had this problem?

Can you post an update about battery life of 920 in wp 8.1 ?
The battery life is about the same as it was before the update. I usually get a full days worth of use, so depending on how much you use your phone, it could need charging sooner than the end of the day.
thnks for the info.

Hey what is the latest official update (over the air) for the Lumia 920?
great work :) keep it up
If i update my Lumia 720 to WP 8.1, will 8.0 apps and other be deleted or not,..??
No, all of your applications will still be on your device.

Firdaus Tokimin Check that your Language setting has the US language pack at the top. If not, tap and hold on it to move it up. You may have to download the speech pack. If you go into the speech settings and change it to the US also, it will download Cortana.

i have develope perview i have 8.1 update but i dont have cortana???
ilam buduri Have you set up your device for US?
what is the battery life ?
What about some saying it'll void warranty?
yes it does void your phones warranty but only until your mobile carrier send out the update then your warranty is re-enabled so to speak
Dillon Espe hussayn19 this is correct. Your warranty will be void during the time your phone is running the developer preview. However, with the new OS available to devices soon, when you install the full Windows Phone 8.1 OS, your warranty is reinstated.
@santosh akon Hmm. Mine runs flawless. I got no problem at all. 😊
will the lumia820 get the win8.1 update?
It sure will. All Windows Phone 8 devices will be receiving the Windows Phone 8.1 update due this summer
can someone to tell me ! the new WP 8.1 , now, has the FM radio app for nokia lumia 920 ?????
MrCatametal It sure does! Using your headphones, you can connect to local FM radio channels
u also have it before 8.1 go into music and u will find the FM Radio actually. U have to connect ur headphone to use as antenna
In some countries and on some phone networks, the FM radio was disabled. Microsoft have now taken it out and into its own separate app that everyone can have regardless of carrier
Erm, I live in America, but the update isn't showing up on my 920
IN THIS UPDATE , IS ALL THE BUGS ARE FIXED ??????? FOR LUMIA 920
Yes, most of the known bugs are fixed in the latest version of the developer preview.
Hi.Would you please tell me if you can choose 2G network. Does the code ##3282# works? Regards
I can't choose 2G on my Nokia Lumia 920 and I can't access the ##3282# diagnostic menu.
Is this a legal update . Whether dis will cause my phone or my phones dta pls reply sir
Jagan Kathir The update to Windows Phone 8.1 should be available soon through the OTA update system in your country. You can check here: @global/support/software-update/wp8-software-update/

Darryl Ilyasa Because it is beta, this 8.1 version is developer preview not full version, that will be out during summer this year.
Darryl Ilyasa Cortana will be in Beta for some time until it is feature filled. As it is still a new product from Microsoft, Cortana still needs to learn a lot more from people to tailor results and speech functions.
ah... okay,thanks a lot man ^^
@ArmenianSOADfreak Put on mobile version in the internet explorer settings.

I miss Bing Search.
Cortana can still do you a Bing search though. It hasn't been removed. It has in fact been updated to search your phone also when you search for something.
MicroTech I know that, I'm saying the Bing picture of the day has been removed.
Muyanzi Reid I see what you mean. Yes, I miss that too. You can still set it as your Lock Screen photo though! :)
That's a funny joke
You can turn her off and it'll go to bing search instead
i cant update my 920? im in saudi???
Are you on the developer preview programme?

The new calendar experience is a failure.

@grogsy100 Works good to me.
