I think this smells like that it was a scam where the broker and buyer were co-operating in getting the price down. It's a pretty common tactic to price high, getting no offers and then suddenly there's a buyer who offers less than market value and the broker suggests to sell and the seller does so, being afraid that it won't sell at all. Afterwards the broker gets their share of the deal plus a kickback from the buyer. Also recommended surveyor sounds fishy.
Our current boat is my fourth boat (first one bought back in the eighties). I don't follow the boat market, except when on the lookout for a "new" one. It is common practice to set a high price in the hope of making a good deal. However, most if not all sellers have to lower the price eventually. When we sold our previous boat, we set a decent price and the boat was sold in less than two weeks. I don't like the prolongued stress and hassle of selling a boat. Anyway, I am glad you were able to sell your boat. At least now you know where you stand financially. Sail safe and have fun with your new boat !
G'day Lorna Here is to better times on your new boat. I maybe on the other side of the Planet here in Australia. But I do not like how the Broker was doing business. I still have plans to have a Narrow built when I get to the UK. So I hope the builders will be straight with me. I do not take crap from anyone. Big Hugs to you from me.
Like how you documented this together with the editing and sharing each update from start to finish. Must had been very stressful to get the boat sold which honestly no one deserves to be stressed
Aawww girl, the stresses of selling an asset. I feel for you and the stress this broker has put you through. I think the broker should be named and shamed. The stress is gone now. Put it behind you and keep moving forward. Chalk it up to experience and don’t use that broker again, or recommend them. Love your stuff 😊😊
Hindsight is a wonderful thing but perhaps ‘cruising the cut’ could have moved your boat up to a midland boatyard/ brokerage. Did your agent / broker operate from a marina? If not that would have alarm bells ringing and not telling you when buyers were on site is another flag!!!! Someone told me to stay away from anything southern as they will rinse you.
Good luck in to the future Lorna. At least now the stress levels should return to normal and you can now concentrate on you new boat and a better journey ahead..🥂
What an effing nightmare... But well done you, smashing up the furniture looked REALLY cathartic! I'm really looking forward to some amazing adventures in your new boat! 😊💙⚓
Selling things for lots of money is always tough going. The less the broker knows of your situation the better, act like you've got all the time in the world. The buyer did their due diligence so hard to blame them for lowering the price. You were getting time crunched in both directions, buying and selling. I don't think it was a scam but the buyer seemed to know you were in sort of a jam. Set a fair price and don't waiver. Will they get all that work done on the boat??? doubtful. But hey you have a cool new boat on the way ... stay on the builder to finish on time. The worries never end, just a little breather now and then.
Sorry to to hear about the hassle that you have had to go through selling your boat. The problems you have experienced should not be a problem with a new build so hopefully happy days ahead.
Erm, I think you just got scammed by the broker. The buyer was probably his friend. They priced it high but probably didnt advertise it. Also, it is the buyers responsibility to get a survey and not yours. They would also have to fork out the money to move the boat, and return it. Not sure if you can do some digging around but this seems like something for the police to be involved with.
If only you had come to your friends on here earlier. Putting it bluntly I think you have been screwed good and proper. Oh Lorna my heart bleeds for you. Sadly it's all too late now.
I can't believe you stood this joker as long as you did. He is obviously a crook. We took our boat to Rugby Boats at Weedon 2 weeks ago. They were totally transparent, got more for our boat than we expected, and sold it in a day and a half. In case you're wondering I have no connection wit Rugby Boats other than instructing to sell our boat because I knew they had a great reputation.
Oh!! My stress level was right up there with yours😵.. now it’s done and dusted so you can move on to your next adventure and we’ll be right there with you (I hope)💜
Oh sweetheart, what a kerfuffle 😱. All behind you now 💜 If you come along the Trent and Mersey in Derbyshire taking your new boat home do let me know (NB Sea Glass) xx
It sure does sound iffy to me, I have seen these tactics from estate agents and car buying garages, I also wonder if the price collapse being seen in various other markets has anything to do with people being able..just about..to go on holiday abroad again...the camper market (yes, I own a camper) is collapsing at a remarkable rate after people bought into the so called freedom dream and idea of camper holidays and then didn't like it or didn't like the effort it takes and decided to go back to holidays abroad or wherever... couple this with the dramatic rising cost of living and we have the perfect circumstances for charlatan brokers/representatives to take advantage of seller's and buyers.... I read on social media of people losing tens of thousands in just a few short months when trying to resell campers purchased during and just after lockdown, the glut of Campers coming back onto the market is huge...is it the same for boats I wonder...or is it the brokers just conning people out of their money. Anyway Lorna, love the vids and look forward to seeing you happy in a new boat soon.
So sorry to hear all the stress you have gone through. Pity you couldn’t have moved the boat to perhaps another brokerage as your one sounded dodgy. The engine might have been an issue given your own experiences but the overplating sounds overkill. Still best to look forward, in the words of Frozen “let it go” or it will mar your enjoyment of the future and look forward to new adventures. ❤️
I think your boat was worth way more than £56,000 in the current market, assume the broker has taken a portion of that as well!! Wish you had backed out of this, it sounds very underhand to me!
BOAT - Bring out another £1K - or maybe another £15K ………. Fact is with these Narrowboats your hand is always in your pocket, not really a good asset, sadly.
Try and look at it from a different perspective: how long did you have the boat? Do you feel you had plenty of good times on it? With the difference in the buy and sell price, do you think those years of ownership were worth it ?? For example £15k over say, five years, well that's about £3k a year - was that worth it?? I hope so. But I always think both buyers and sellers always get scammed by brokers/agents - they want their cut and are greedy !! 🤨
After the first two months I would have changed broker's. You poor thing. So much stress. Hope everything works out well and don't ever work with "that guy" again. Gracious. Take care.
What was the “roller coaster” cost? Meaning based on what you think you would have settled for before the broker raised the price, versus what you did end up settling for in the end? Admittedly this is an made up number because there is no way to say what you would have gotten had you not listened to the broker about raising…
AARRGGHH!!!!!!! .... I guess You were scammed there then Lorna ? .... A Broker using their OWN! Surveyor?? .... They COULD and probably DID already have the script written BEFORE Your boat left to go on it's journey ... I guess it was an EXPENSIVE Life-Lesson - Financially AND Psychologically .... Hope things pick up from now on ... Good Luck 🙂
Wow sorry but I must be out of touch with the prices that still looked over priced ..looking at the state of the engine in previous videos .....take care
Move on... Apparently the best days of a boat owner are the day the boat is sold and the day it's purchased...your doing the right thing buying new. XXX look FWD to a new one ..enjoy it ..much less problematic

And who's to say the engine failure was not induced, I agree fully with your premis
It does sound a little off. But at least the hassle is over now.
It was nearly a year so not really suddenly. However the survey sounds interesting about overplating . I bet this doesn’t get done.
@@billy4072 you got it right first time.

Thanks for sharing your personal journey, what a relief, lesson for us all.

Congrats on your new boat, looks really nice - enjoy. X
Traumatic I've just relived my experience of selling a yacht in 1975. I had a very similar experience. Awful!

Bless you. That seemed a real headache. Hope all is ok now it’s sold. Good luck with the Aintree Beetle .
...superb hammer work... ...that made my morning : ) ...have a nice day !!
Stressful time, look forward to your beetle. I'm looking forward to seeing you on it.
Very stressful, hope the new one will have more luck
Seems dodgy but it sold the waiting for funds to go in is always stress full still new boat exciting times donny

Hi Lorna,
Name the broker, so that others can avoid them, as this very much seems like a scam.
Looking forward to seeing the new one. :-)
Jeepers! How distressing for you. I felt dtressed just watching. I'm glad it has all worked out. Whew!
Happy new boat!
What's the price of the newly built boat then?? (I don't live in the UK ...yet:)
You got well and truly stitched up luv.

There aren’t a lot of brokers in London
Does the broker have to be local? I see lots of advertisements in the canal press for brokers out of London.
Very happy for you 👍👏
Sending hugs Lorna 🤗

I wanted at least 75, would have settled for 70
@@lornajaneadventures hi miss how are you doing

Was that not good money for your size of boat?
No. A lot of the value is in the mooring

Will check video out when I get home mate

Should have changed the broker if he was not performing.

Sounds like that to me too.
