By the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis
"He’s at the highest level of our music-you can’t get any higher than him.” So says Wynton Marsalis of the legendary saxophonist, composer, and band leader Wayne Shorter. With a legendary career spanning over 60 years, the 11-time GRAMMY award winner (including a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Recording Academy) has released countless classic records and amassed a canon of lyrical, introspective music that stands up to the greatest jazz composers. In 2015, the formidable 81-year-old joined the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis onstage for three unforgettable nights; the result is The Music of Wayne Shorter, out Jan. 31 on CD and digital formats.

For the record, JLCO members arranged beautiful, intricate versions of some of his most classic songs, including “Armageddon” (from 1964’s Night Dreamer), “Endangered Species” (from 1985’s Atlantis), and a very tender, Marsalis-penned take on “Teru” (from 1966’s Adam’s Apple). From Art Blakey to Miles Davis, from Weather Report to his own fabled Quartet, Shorter has done perhaps more than anyone to expand the known universe of jazz. Now, The Music of Wayne Shorter takes Shorter to places he’s never been before, giving his beloved compositions and hauntingly lush saxophone sound the big band backdrop they’ve long deserved. As Marsalis says, “Everybody strives to have a personal sound: his sound is definitive.”

R.I.P Wayne Shorter. The music world lost another giant.
Not a bigger "Giant" anywhere, any place, than Mr. Shorter.
I love how the sax sections eyes are glued to Wayne Shorter when he's soloing.
En même temps, comment ne pas regarder cette légende....
Wayne getting very choked up at the end, no doubt about this fantastic arrangement of his wonderful tune. Planet Earth's music played at it's highest level on display right here. Superb.
We miss you, Mr Shorter. Thank you so much for such great music for so many years. You are irreplaceable.
8:25 I knew this soli sounded familiar! It's a direct rip from Branford's first chorus at the '87 Newport Jazz Festival! Killer stuff!
RIP to the legend
Dan Is Captivating On The Piano!!!!!🎹🤩👍🏽
wife and I were at this concert .. I was so excited when I got tickets, RIP Wayne Shorter
WS is the one of the great jazz giants.....rest in peace💔💔
That band just reeks of class and talent. ❤Rest In Peace Wayne. ❤
This is truly a beautiful arrangement but on top of the music, I feel enormous gratitude and nostalgia as I see Wayne, Wynton, Victor Goines, and the cast of master musicians playing together in an HD video. Like seeing raw footage of your super heroes. Wayne Shorter is in my opinion one of the most valuable people on the planet and I hope everyone can sit back and take in how lucky we are to see this today.
What a great band... Human elevation
Watching Dan Nimmer's fingers on his solo made me a little sea-sick. I NEED THIS ALBUM!!!!
Rest in peace Wayne.
Love Wyntons solo. Love Wayne Shorter, a great genius of my life and this is one of his quintessential pieces.
But another genius left us yesterday. RIP Lyle Mays.
Que lindo! No había visto y escuchado este homenaje al gran Wayne!!!
Thank you humanity for just existing...
Beat got bro philosophical
FANTASTIC Arrangement!!!!! So Wonderful To See The Great Wayne Shorter Perform To The MAX!!!!! Loved It 🎷🎶❤💚👍🏽
This is my favorite thing ever
the thing about art is that it is not just about your physical gifts of playing an instrument, but much more about your unique voice and perspective and way of hearing, seeing the world. bravo.
ps meanwhile skain playin his ass off overhere!
JLCO enhanced Wayne Shorter's wonderful compositions. This is truly beautiful music. Thank you Wayne. Thank you Wynton, and thank you members of JLCO for your hard work and bringing this wonderful music to everyone who is fortunate enough to hear it. Thank you so much.
86 years old... dayum!
Thanks, WS. And thanks JALC for uploading. Amazing I can sit at home and hear/see this. Amazing.
WHOA, DOC!!!!!
Shorter ❤!!!
Class. Elegance. Brilliant.
Yes or No
For me, it’s a
Yes!
Damn that piano solo was Snoopy level of cool
WOW! SO ON FIRE!! JUST MELTED ALL THE WAY DOWN!
7:59 that’s kinda hot
Wonderful. A true master he is and he will live forever in jazz!
What a treat!!!
Dan Nimmer’s solo… like Herbie on Witch Hunt - something I need to go back to and steal some lines.
amazing.always.
Phenomenal
Winton is no Clifford but Clifford was no Winton of course Wayne is older and somehow sheds a larger shadow they all badass
I love playing that tune, always been in my repertoire
They started relatively conservatively but then swang the $#!* outta that $#!+ once Shorter started in with the staccato riffs and after that small sax bridge
I’ve got the whole album downloaded already
This is incredible...! My heart is so happy, my soul is full of love and joy! ♥️🖤💚
Might be a good idea to get Wynton's last name right!
As I am sure you know…jazz is in the moment.
So happy to have THIS moment and THAT moment documented.
This "Maralis" trumpet player is pretty darn good....i will not get started on Wayne Shorter because..well you know...what more can be said about this living legend!!!!
The whole thin is fantastic. I was caught by the piano solo.
ウィントン、いいねぇ〜
フィーリングたっぷり
Wonderful arrangement! Wayne... You are the gentleman! Thank you guys!
So good!!! Thank you for this
ウィントンの幅広さが分かる。最大の天才!
4:32 GREAT RYAN KYSOR TRUMPET
The arranging of the main theme starting around 0:50 totally caught me by surprise. The original 1964 recording sounds more stormy and anxious, with Elvin thundering behind Wayne, and McCoy's intense ringing chords sounding more staccato and martial, plus Wayne's tenor sax having something of the Coltrane "cry", a tone that's not trying to be big and round and soothing like a Ben Webster.
Here, JaLC is all smooth edges, fat-sounding trombone choirs, and synchronized swing that moves like a Swiss watch during the opening...it almost sounds like the entrance music for a television host. I'm not saying that to put down the arrangement...it's very well played and arranged and offers a different perspective on the tune, which is fun to hear. And how can you translate McCoy and Elvin into a big band? I like how things evolve once the soloing starts.
when i was first starting to listen to jazz i always recognized shorter as "the guy that who kinda has a coltrane tone" lmfaoo
Yep. arrangement sounds like a UNT one o' clock lab band student chart lol
@@zecho3535 i thought of him as the guy who can endlessly create tunes from the coltrane sound
Superb perfomance, compisition, arrangement, musicians, all this with a master> Wayne.
This band needs to add Peter Bernstein to the permanent roster.
To me this is like a chant! I like "Yes and No" so much and to watch/hear it played by the man himself (the epic Mr. Shorter) and this formidable band and such marvelous arrangement! Caramba! What else could I ask for?
Who is this dude on piano? Whew! And Wynton's solo is just fantastic. Great performance and arrangement. Wish I were there, man. This is what jazz is all about! Wayne rules.
My thoughts!
Dan Nimmer is one of the best jazz pianists of this era
@@stevenmejiamusic3495 Thanks for that information. I thought I seen that name somewhere in the video...or a different one. Great performance! Thanks again.
Damn this is smooth.
Swinging.... I love ! 👏
A beautiful piece!
Juju is not my favorite Wayne Shorter album but WOW this arrangement of Yes Or No? is fantastic! Wayne is a genius.
I woke up this morning with this beautifull swinging piece and it gave me such good feeling for the day to come! Thank you Wayne and his band.
Dude, if they ever make LA Noire 2, they gotta contract these guys to play the soundtrack
Beautiful Wayne Signature is coming on 3:24
Marsalis solo 🤯
Que buenos¡¡ Schorter y Marsallis,se lucen en los solos, grandes musicos todos
why does he still look so young
Those people can definitely play...😂😅
Big Love!
7:58 when you're playing jazz but you've been shedding Rachmaninov
the sax section was smiling and shaking their head at that line lol
EPIC !! To say the least
Wow! 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾 That was deep 😎
本人じゃないかい。いい曲だなぁ。
Wynton!!!!
yes or no? Yes!!!
Smooth.
Que chido está esto, de lo mejor
NICE BAND.
só fera, só lenda! Belíssimo vídeo! Obrigado por compartilhar! Aplausos a todos!
Love the video! But I don’t know any Wynton “Maralis”...
@@glfriendliness9793 OMG, Wynton Morales!? I love him
It's Wynton Marsalis. Look him up!
Caleb Oluwafemi I see you didn’t understand

This contains lots of amazing parts. Its takes a little while for the magnitude of the music to sink in sometimes.
Wayne! Wynton! Dan Nimmer!
At 9.25, all the musicians' shoes in the two rows change from brown to black! Obviously a splice right at the end. I wonder why? But more importantly, mind you: Amazing music!
I wondered that too. How did that happen so quickly and seamlessly? Wayne cried at the end of the song so it may have been some tribute to him that was edited out for some reason. 🤔
They also change ties and Shorter has a large pin on his lapel at the end, and the soundtrack doesn't quite match the video at the end. It could be that they preferred the brown-shoes performance, but wanted to capture Shorter's emotion at the end from the black-shoes performance, with the brown-shoes audio running underneath.
que buen contenido por mi madre
😎🇧🇷👍
2:43
7:57 What the F
BRUH THAT GOT ME FUCKED UP
bruh that's mad
What happen?
Cool Pace the pianist plays some super fast chords that was mad
Cool Pace he was using a technique called locked hands. Greats like Art Tatum and Oscar Peterson we’re masters at it. You should check out Girl Talk by Oscar Peterson. He completely shreds it using locked hands.
Wynton playing a classic Trane lick at 5:06
colorful
Is there a way I can purchase this arrangement?
So how did the bands’ shoes change from cordovan to black so quickly and seamlessly at the end of the song, and why? 🤔
Arrangement by?
Tom Scott on the sax
WHERE CAN I SEE THE FULL VIDEO?
0:44
how did wynton do that
Dan Nimmer!
What does it mean yes or no, the music is great I don’t understand the title
Olowa Segun it’s the name of the song
It’s actually Yes AND No, like the figure of speech. The A section is the major tonality based “Yes” section and the bridge is the minor “No” section. That’s according to Wayne himself.
Love Wayne Shorter, this tune, big band jazz, but last time I checked, women play jazz, too.
Michael Cera at the piano...
Kinda looked like mr shorter was struggling with his sax at the beginning, like something was wrong
His reed was not sounding too good. If you heard the squeaks. I think he fixed it somehow
0:13 squeaks?
At 7:27 min the drummer kills the 4/4 time
SWINGIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! AND THEY SAY MUSIC IS DEAD...LOL
Wayne Shorter remains us it is a live and has plenty of soul.
@@oneofspades Absolutely one of the best to EVER pick the sax
