When you work at a world class level and with the kind of intensity professionals like Wynton bring to his music, you are entitled to feel burnt out. He has done an incredible job as artistic director of Jazz at Lincoln Center. Their orchestra never disappoints.
And this is the crucial difference between these musicians and the so-called "stars".These people are sincere, honest musicians. They don't need technical sound assistance, or props, they are the ultimate example of highly trained musicians. They are a shining example for people to follow. I truly respect and admire them as individuals and as a band. From the UK.
I really love how they're focusing on people rather than music. To me playing jazz is all about embracing and accepting the people in your group and life outside the group
Look, I appreciate the spirit behind the musical backgrounds you're adding over the discussion, but I would recommend against continuing that practice. You can't just slap music on the audio track like this and expect that it becomes anything but a detraction and a distraction. It's not helping; it's in the way. I would like it better if I didn't have to work so hard to hear the message these folks are trying to share, and I dare say that to ANY musician it's going to be this way because we have spent our lives teaching our ears to listen deeply to good music.
@@OLDSCHOOLnola What I've seen since I made my comment is indeed better. Thanks! I hadn't realized the same footage is available elsewhere and I wonder if maybe I should seek that out. But I haven't yet.
And I’m DAMN GLAD I hung in until the end to catch that incredible exchange between Branford and Wynton!!!! Telepathy and chops so rare in the music and even our planet!
Me too. Played in some big clubs, then a career, including U.S.A.F. that had something that had to do with anything but playing music for my patients. Now I play for my dog. Midlife crisis=muscle cars and women half my age.
Nice dialogue. It's so weird being a jazz musician, being able to see your progress can be impossible especially with how easy it is to be neurotic about it and attatching your value to it. When other people recognize your growth it can seem so weird. I play with a violinist, and he mentioned how my improvement has inspired him to get better. But Never have I ever thought I've gotten to a point of that recognition
Back in the day, playing even local gigs payed a Middle Class Wage. As a musician, you made more than regular workers and could afford the cost of living. Today, gig wages haven’t kept up with inflation. Gigs want to pay what they paid 30 years ago. Love of music is great. Struggling to survive, not so much. Try and get gigs that pay into the AFM Pension Fund. Really valuable in the end. Wynton seems like a humble guy:)
BAND LEADER Wynton says, #1 "you gotta have gigs" lol 2. Pay your people on time yes lol 3. Don't lead like you know it all and you can't expect people to follow you like puppets.....something like that .......and be vulnerable. Great stuff! and so so right Another thing I would add, you probablly should have been born in Louisiana where there were always a lot of gigs.
So eloquently stated! I met all of the speakers when they were in there 20's. Wow. They have given us a life of excellence! Appreciate you for posting!
Sorry, I appreciate the effort, but I would love to know where I can watch this without the backing track. I find it very difficult to hear the speakers at times, and this is wonderful content that I don't want to miss.
This is an excellent video. Thank you for sharing. I am studying alto saxophone and love jazz. I plan to share this not only with the musicians in my family but with others who have challenges in life, as we all do. I have just one suggestion, and that is to correct the spelling of the word: “quitting” in the video title. There are two “t”s in the word, not one. Thank you again.
Well I’ll let you in on something: all these people know is music, if you trained all your life as a musician you can’t just quit and go to law school That’s 6 years of school All they know is music
Wynton couldn’t QUIT PLAYING if his LIFE DEPENDED on it. He once told me that if he ever stopped, HE WOULD DIE. 😮 Yeah, Without BEING SEEN, he'd be a NOBODY. The horn makes him SOMEBODY. He is just as HALLOW & SHALLOW as other CELEBRITY HUMANS who believe themselves to be SUPERIOR to others because THEY can ENTERTAIN or make NOISES with a PIECE of METAL. I PITY THEM ALL. 🙏🏼 GStazzy, He also HATES MILES with a PASSION. He's as TEMPERAMENTAL as a 4 year old. FACT not fiction. Thanks
Sorry, but Wynton is and always had been greatly over-rated. He rode the wave of diversity among the NY wealthy. He was lucky to be the right person at the time needed.

Gotta love the Mr. Rogers-ish pianism during the beginning.
"I'm so pleased to visit with you today! Why don't we feed the fish together?"
That bass player spoke on music as much as he spoke on life

what if you have some good jazz in the background when having sex? does it make you bad in bed too?
Understood. Will do better, and let me know what you think. Thanks so much!
I agree, it ruins it lol but I’ve seen these in their original context so I’m familiar with the topics
I have perhaps made some improvements. Thoughts?

Music is one of the greatest stimulants to all people that there is on this planet.! We've abused the usage of it but its wonderful ! 😑😣

A REAL conversation about life, dedication, and music.

The tenor trumpet duet at the end was worth it!!!

Amazing to see Wynton maintain his vibranium chops over the years. Never heard him having chop problems
Agreed! Thanks for your reply. Much more to come!
He had an ingrown stache hair years ago that created some problems that's all I've ever heard of with him as far as chop issues
So eloquently stated! I met all of the speakers when they were in there 20's. Wow. They have given us a life of excellence! Appreciate you for posting!
My pleasure! Thanks so much for your reply. Much more to come!
Great words! ...........but that trombone!.............So lovely! Thanks for both.
Thank You Wynton and the band. Life and art. I love Your music. Donald Fransson in Sweden.
If you don't live life with this music deep inside yourself then you let the music die deep inside of you.
Killer duet inside on that quartet! sooooooswinging!
What a great question!
The background music is set too loud... can't be as loud or louder than the person speaking...etc.
Will do better. Thank you.
this is a beautiful conversation, wonderful!
Thank you. Much more to come!

Will post soon. Thank you.
Seriously, stop doing this creators
Isn’t the title misleading ? All I heard Marsalis say is that midlife crisis is real. 😊
nice seminar, dug Delfeayo Marsalis's trombone solo spot too
Also. If you're getting the gigs make sure you get paid appropriately
Awesome video! Thx for posting!
Hi this isn't Cain & Abel. This is the song After By The Marsalis family "A Jazz Celebration " Beautiful vid love it!❤️💯
💪❤Keep the Faith!
Thank you! Much more to come!
Herbie Hancock talked about being a Human, Musician, then instrumentalist as a sort of hierarchy as you walk through life(as a musician).

Will do. Thank you.
Good lord the background music is distracting. And this is a very very important topic that should have no distraction
Nice video. The audio editing is a little distracting
Will do better.
Why the background music??? Why???
Jeez, cut the piano....Finally Thankyou!!
Why the background sound?
Oh, that's right - music isn't important and deserves no attention. Just talk over it.
Is there a verion without the music? Its very distracting especially as a jazz musician. I cant focus on what they are saying...
Yes, see the latest video.
Maybe you could repost without the background music? It's really distracting.
Well I’ll let you in on something: all these people know is music, if you trained all your life as a musician you can’t just quit and go to law school

Wisdom for the ages. Thank you for sharing.
What’s the name of the last song?
Carlos is the homie
not sure about that bg music
He got to work with Elvin Jones.
Why is there music in the background?

What is the deal with jazzing all over his talking ?!?!? Wtf aaaaarrrrrggghhhh it looks like I pick the wrong week to quit sniffin glue
Working to improve.
Repost and lose the bkgnd music please.
These people should speak louder.
Sorry, but Wynton is and always had been greatly over-rated. He rode the wave of diversity among the NY wealthy. He was lucky to be the right person at the time needed.
This ain't about Wynton
He helped found one of the best modern jazz orchestras bro what are you talking about
Regardless of the time period his playing speaks for itself. Probably the greatest trumpeter of all time.
I wouldn’t say overrated but he wouldn’t be my 1st choice for listening to a horn player
And who tf are you??
