I had a 406 like this with vortec heads and a hydraulic flat tappet cam " Duration 288/298, Lift .444/.466". I had a Holley dual plane 300-36 intake manifold and a 3310 750 Holley carb. I think the heads were totally stock with maybe some matterial machined off the spring retainers if I remember right. On the dyno it made 420 hp @ 5300 rpm and 498 ft pounds of torque. I loved this engine it was super responsive and great on the street.

I build a 409 sbc off the magazine super Chevy I think. It was called 406 impersonator. Stock Vortec heads a Lunati bracket 2 cam. An made 428 HP an 525 of torque. This motor is so fun to drive in my 86 square body. The nose never goes down until I get off the gas. I pulled over 5 tons with this motor an never had a problem.

I like that cam, it's the one that Dan from Hatch's Recreational Engineering channel used in his sbc 307. He swapped on a set of the EQ Vortec 305 heads and a genuine imitation RPM Airgap dual plane intake topped off with a Holley 600 double pumper. All factory bottom end.
The best time he ran so far is 13.8 in the QM. He was having problems with the th350 not being able to rev more than 5,800 I think he wrote where he had to shift. He could hold it past 6,300 in second where he crossed the finish line in. He has a 3.73 rear gear. Once he gets the transmission sorted out he should be in the low 13s. Pretty dang good for a engine people consider a boat anchor.
I think he has less than 1,600 bucks US into it and that includes the purchase price of the engine which included the th350 transmission. Made for a very fun budget driver.😎👍

I just finished building my vortec 406. This one has a off the shelf Howard's hydraulic roller part# 111145-10. I haven't fired it up yet. My first one I bulit had a soild flat tappet xs282s comp cam that decided eat itself. It made great power until i noticed the cam was going bad. Both engines have flat top four valve relief pistons. I was able to run 93 octane at 34* timing without pinging.

Sounds like a good combo, Enough compression without causing issues and much the same with the camshaft. Should make heaps of low-end & midrange torque, and I suspect it might rev out enough. You shouldn't need to spin a 400 to the moon to get things done. This should push a porky truck around OK with a 3.08 axle with enough on tap to get you into trouble if you so choose!

I`ve used 3 pairs of ProMaxx heads and I always flow them, You can`t beat the price. Every head was %10 below advertised flow. Eric Weingardener( u-tube) got the same results. I bought a set of 200ccMax sbc`s 377cc shocker BBc heads and a set of 235cc shocker sbc heads, none of my customers were dissapointed with the results from the dyno, they were all pump gas engines. the lowest power was 500hp the highest was 750hp, they were worth the money..The 200cc Maxx heads were thier marine heads and had a super smooth black shiny finish in the ports under the valve covers and the water jackets, they looked great.

Cam specifics wont matter as long as its BIG. Use as much lift as the valve, retainter, seal combination will tolerate. Thr engines is gonna saturate the heads no matter what you do and if you use stock retainers and valves the lower valve groove for the seal ring is going to interfere with any positive valve seal or unbrella with pretty low lift so unless you're happy with old fashioned deflectors and square profile seal rings then you aren't really going to have the ability to over cam the engine.

technically mines an externally balanced .020 over 400 so 403 (509 block). 062 vortecs shaved to 60cc, thick as a book head gaskets, keith black replacement dished pistons. intake is an edelbrock 2116 with a 1 inch spacer. carb is holley 770 avenger. Cam is an ancient comp magnum 280 . PAW cheapy1.52 roller rockers. 1.75 inch long tubes. 3.42 rear.Trans is a super t10 and most of the time i leave it in 3rd ,its like a 1 speed trans. 1st gear is useless so all launches are 2nd gear and still hairy. Already on the 2nd 4 spd.

About 450 hp. I'm not gonna harp about the flat tappet cam. I'd never do it because I'm in the middle of Asscrackistan, Saskatchewan. So everything has to be ordered in at the parts store. Im not waiting a day to 3 days to get an oil change done, or I'm driving to another city to pick up things.
About the use of vortec heads. Everyone and their dog thinks they are worth gold around here. What are your thoughts on doing a set of the knock-off, bare dart shp heads budget like. (as in a guys garage with hand tools) as believe it or not those are a cheaper option then finding a set of used vortec heads and then having to go through them. Shipping is killer here in Canada or I'd order some off the interwebs

Flat tappet would probably be fine since you can't get a ton of lift anyway with no stall converter. 87 octane would be great too. Maybe it wouldn't make good clickbait b/c the HP just wouldn't be there, but it would be really nice to see the limits of big cubes, but small lift, for towing.

I like your channel and I like this 406 with the Vortec heads, but I have to ask, what is your method for picking cams? You say you want a cam with low end power and streetability, but did you notice your cam has 75 degrees of overlap?? Your gonna kill any and all low end torque. This engine probably won't start building power until 3500-4000 rpm. That's one hell of a street motor! But, if you follow DV's advice and use his formula, a more efficient cam for your build would have about 103-104 degree LSA and about 40-55 degrees of overlap. You'll get a little less duration, but better idle and way more power under the curve. That is where you want street power. Just my two cents, can't wait to see how it does!

    • @cuttersperformance
      @cuttersperformance  4 месяца назад +3

You gotta remember his overlap recommendations are based on a 350. This cam with the same compression but in a 350 will act very different than it will in a 406. I was actually looking for a cam with 71 to 72 deg of overlap.
I wasn't going for maximum street manners in this build as that would sacrifice too much power. I was going for power brakes friendly (12+ inches of vac), 87 octane and tons of torque.
If it doesn't have enough vac and idle, I was thinking about trying rhodes lifters on this one 🤔

@@cuttersperformance sounds good, but if you don’t quite get what you want numbers wise, I would contact Mike Jones and fill out his form and find out what his recommendation would be for a cam. He can design one for your specific engine combo. The problem I see is, you have way too much bore and way too small intake valve for your application. Still looking forward to see what it does! Best of luck with it!

I've always wondered: is 4/7 swap firing order cams only for single plane intakes, or is it okay for dual plane, too? I would definitely not want to do something that would be bad if used with a dual plane intake. Also, is the 4/7 swap the same thing as LS firing order or is that yet another variation? Thanks!

We will be trying both single and dual on the dyno, personally I believe that's a myth. LS is a different firing order

The 347 Ford should be a fun one. Aftermarket heads let these guys run pretty strong. The low deck height makes them easy swaps.

I want to see someone do a shootout between a modern intake even an air gap style and a Holley 300-36 to see if it's as good as people say, I picked up a nice condition old 300-36 contender for $100 and I can say it has nice large looking runners, I'm replacing an old og torker hoping to get a little more flow and little more low rpm TQ even tho the torker worked great it really did even tho so many parts are generalized in forums as great or terrible when there neither there just pretty good and not even close to toss in the dumpster category. And most times these "experts" will make a judgement on a part when they have ZERO personal experience with it not theirs or anybody they know.... They are just regurgitating some statement someone else made and there are so many that's mindset of if it's not the tippy top dog performing part it's garbage... I love it when someone who has had a good experience with these parts pipe up and set them straight saying no you don't know what your talking about and have real world info and these haters have no data or experience to argue back with and they usually either argue with lies in an attempt to save face or just quiet down and hope no one remembers there BS attempt at being relevant, mostly forums are terrible places to get advice so often people want advice and everyone says don't bother buy this and they say I can't afford that and I already have it and over n over people just crap on it and say go with this instead... Do they not understand what is going on? Help them make the best of what they have or shut up.
