These pipes do NOT require keystones. Only the Nording Erikson pipes need them. However, the drying of tobacco will help you with this pipe. I tend to rub out a few days worth of tobacco and let it dry out a bit in a sealed container before smoking in this pipe--which, by the way, makes it a perfect travel pipe. If you tend to load up tobacco in a leather pouch for hiking, camping, etc., this pipe is PERFECT to go with you on your journeys. Maybe that's why they feature a compass?
I totally agree having pipe cleaners on hand is ridiculous, bought the copper version about one year ago as I thought it looked really nice, but unfortunately I have smoked it 3 times I think.
I got a Nording last week. Top third is rusticated, the bottom smooth. I love the little bugger. Great pipe for traveling. I smoked it off and on all weekend. The bowl seems small, but I was able to get a forty minute smoke out of it. It will be traveling with me , along with a Falcon, for now on.
Aye they’re a great compact companion for travelling I’d imagine, I’m not doing much of that these days! Glad to hear you’re enjoying it. I’ve yet to try a falcon also.
I haven't gotten into the Nordings, but what you're describing makes sense based on the design. I'm glad your Nan is able to come home. Uncle Phil does have a fantastic voice. Congrats on 100 subs! 😁👍
Hiyas Cass, I've found that some of my pipes were a slam dunk right out of the box and others took some time for me to make my own. Oh yeah, they have quirks and personalities that you learn to adapt to over many sessions. You may also find that they are better suited for particular types of tobaccos as well. All part of the fun. Hello Cass, I don't have one but in a modern, minimalistic style I do like them. Also a sucker for Norse mythology... If I saw one cheap I would likely pick it up. I've got more into snuff now too, especially since I had a nasty head cold - smoking was out, but the menthol snuffs helped a lot. I love the Mulled Magic one too, cloves 😍

I might just do that you know. I have ordered some Denicool crystals , they are similar to the Nording Keystones you can get. To cool, and absorb the moisture.
The gurgling issue is most likely due to the drastic change in medium that the pipe smoke goes through. I have two of these (different size bowls and stems) both experience the same issue. As the hot smoke travels from the briar bowl to the cool metal stem, it acts as a condenser causing moisture to form in the stem itself. This is where the gurgling comes from. It happens more often in the cold, because as you said “it’s bloody cold” in that shed, so the metal is relatively the same temperature. I noticed it less, in the 95 degree F heat of the summer.

I have a briar one as well. I got it a couple of weeks ago, and have smoked it about five times. I haven’t had too much problem with the gurgles. Apparently there is one called the Mac Arthur that has a long stem. I got mine at a local B&M all the briar ones had the short stem, and the aluminum ones seemed to have a longer stem.
Yea, I didn’t fancy the aluminium body ones, that’s a bit too far for me personally. They are great wee pipes and smoke well. Over ordered some “Denicool” crystals to try with it, which should filter the smoke. And take moisture away.

What you want to do is pop a sharrow chalk Philtpad on the bottom of that bowl or a few denicool crystals. It will absorb the moisture and give you a dry smoke. Seriously Cass 👍

Indeed you’re right. I do think I will invest in some of the filter stones for the Nording. It would do well with them. Great pipe otherwise.
Draft hole is in the side wall so cannot smoke down below that. Draft hole should be in the bottom.

Or vauen basic range. They are great pipes and low cost.
