Hi Simon. I know its not how the instructions state, if i recall correctly, but im thinking that they may work alot better if when packing your pipe you tilt the pipe so the stones are built up more on the side of the draw hole AND there are sufficient enough that they cover the draw hole too. That way ALL smoke has to travel through the air gaps between them, rather than some passing over the stones and some of the smoke not passing over. If that makes sense. Just a suggestion. Im thinking of getting these as i get a small amount of tongue bite with my two favourite tobaccos and also get some gurgling with the one. Thanks for the review, kindest regards, Dean.

Pro tip Simon: you can also use tiny pieces of a broken up terra cotta plant pot for the same affect as the stones, albeit much cheaper

The pieces of broken pottery (unglazed, of course) worked well for me also (I uploaded the video), except for the irregular shapes of the fragments. What I've found to work even better is a slice of blackboard chalk. It's very easy to get the perfect shape and size, incredibly absorbent and dirt cheap.

Thank you Simon for doing this experiment with the keystones. I have been thinking about trying them .

Like others have mentioned - you can also use chalk granules (look for edible clay sites online for food-grade calcium carbonate or edible chalk) - which cost about £2.50 for a 100g bag.

Thanks Simon. I'm very close to pulling the trigger and buying a keystone pipe (similar to the falcon). I think I'm going to go ahead! Hell! They're £20! If it don't work out.... Hey ho!

Like you Virginia"s give me tongue bit. I found that the Keystones help but the 9mm filter has been the best solution that I have found.

JJM if have to agree. 9mm’s have worked best so far.

I have also tried the Sharrow Philtads. They work better then the Keystones, but I find the charcoal filter is the best solution.

Before 9mm filters I used chalk filters (Philipads) and they definitely took a lot of moisture etc out. Have you tried them?

@Mark (217maka) cheers Mark, did you only get bite at the beginning of your smoke? If so then your lighting technique seems to have worked for you. For me bite is an issue from beginning to end of the bowl, always has been an insurmountable challenge despite experimenting with absorbent media, tobacco humidity, cadence etc etc. filters just worked for me immediately, so it’s simpler for me to just stick with it.

    Have you tried Philt pads?

They won't absorb any liquid. Meerschaum shaving work but keystones are super cheap. You don't need many.
