I definitely prefer the colour being based on personality and philosophy. It creates more a bond between the Jedi and their lightsaber, like that of a mythical knight or samurai with their handcrafted sword.
It's just wierd though that some characters have/had Lightsabers that break the rules. Ahsoka as a teenage was very similar to Anakin and should have had a blue Lightsaber, yet her original Lightsaber was green. Only later near the end of the Clone Wars both her original Lightsaber and her Shoto Lightsaber become blue.
@@ddy7323 because the Jedi became way more strict and dogmatic, a few hundred years ago and purple blades weren't so rare plus orange was also common back then
I mean I get what the canon is trying to do with lightsaber crystals, but as an ardent fan of the KOTOR and SWTOR games, I feel like the Legends version of lightsaber crystals is easier for me to understand. And I didn't really take the cosmetic function of lightsaber crystals into effect until you pointed it out. Personally, I like the explanation of how the colors of the lightsaber classify a Jedi's role in my honest opinion.
I prefer to mix both explanations, or at least to keep both in mind... I'm an avid fan of KOTOR. I dare say it's probably what kept me interested in Star Wars after the movies were seemingly over forever. Therefore, I really enjoyed the crystal lore in the sense that there were many types of crystals that could be used in lightsabers; kind of like how we can use many stones and crystals to create jewellery in real life. On the other hand, the new canon also offers an attractive explanation. The whole "the crystal/wand chooses the Jedi/wizard" thing. Whilst it is more limiting, it expands on something we saw in KOTOR II: a crystal responding to a single individual and complementing their strengths. This could be further developed in "Rebels" and in the new movie to the point we get to see exactly what triggers the natural colors (blue & green) along with the other less frequent ones (purple, yellow).
Well the colors still do, it's just that now they work retroactively. For example, only Jedi whose infused crystals turned out to be golden yellow were Sentinels, at the same time that everyone knew that a Jedi who had a blue lightsaber would most likely be a better choice to send on a combat mission. Mace Windu's purple saber was a huge advertisement of how close he lived to the Dark Side, and so on. The only difference is that now the Jedi don't get to choose, rather they fall into the roles that better befit their own nature, which just goes so much better with their tradition;
I like both aspects, but I feel they should do a fusion of the two systems. The primary crystal should have to be a kyber crystal, and that would actually be colorless (aka white). The secondary crystal (the focusing crystal) could be one of many crystalline minerals or synthetic, and it is this crystal that gives the blade color. Similar the design from Anakin's lightsaber cross section in the visual dictionary to the original trilogy.
I definitely prefer the legends in this case, because the Sith seem even more badass for synthesizing their own crystals to mock the Jedi who gather them in caves.
Absolutely! I mean, he has some points right in this video, but i will never be able to let go of "legends" material. I even dislike that name.... it had some special "zeist" to it. Now everything is just "Disneyfied" :D.
On the other hand, corrupting crystals with a "Bleeding"-ritual is also pretty badass, and should most definitely be viewed as symbolic mockery of the jedi ways.
I like the number of colors in Legends and video games, but I also like the Kyber crystals being the only thing that works and the color being determined by the personal connection to the Force. In addition, there is a very good reason synthetic crystals should be exclusively for Sith - the Sith impose their will, whereas Jedi allow the living force to guide them. I personally think it would be less effective to the story if Sith crystals were all natural
Im going to be very biased, but I really like the Legends way of things. I like the idea of a jedi imprinting his or her force aura i guess on the crystal in the deuterocanon, but I like the variety and insanity that was present in the Legends canon. and like I said, im just biased towards legends, because that's what I grew up with.
+Ugly Mofo Predator (Emre Uzair) I actually made the same comment on How Ahsoka Got Her White Lightsabers - Star Wars Explained. You can go and take a look. And the name of the Jedi is Jaden Korr, one of the apprentices of Kyle Katarn. Jaden use a Force technique called Cleanse to get rid of the dark side inside a synthetic lightsaber crystal turning it yellow. Symbolizing that he is a Jedi Sentinel.
Prefer the legends versions. The idea of bleeding is cool but it ignores the whole legends idea of the dark side naturally embedding itself within crystals or other objects. The canon now makes it seem like the Sith would just simply steal them instead of creating them which IMO is the same level of bond that the Jedi ultimately create
But thats not true, in the master and apprentice book, obi-wan actually talks about how he was chocked the first time he came across a tree that was really deep in the dark side, showing him how it could manifest in such beings, plus making something without blood bleed by telling it to hurt and understand your hurt sounds alot more edgy ;)
I like canon more in this case. Especially the way the Sith make their lightsabers red by making them “bleed” as it sort of gives them a bit of a more force like nature.
I like Legends more i'm OK with canon up until this whole "bleeding" thing. It made sense for the Sith to make crystals, how was a Sith suppose to get one on Illum if the Jedi guard the planet? Plus legends had an orange lightsaber, also begs the question how did Luke get his green saber if it wasn't made by him did he actually go to the planet?
I'm sure the Sith had their own place for collecting crystals, and since they "bled" them to get whatever they wanted out of them, they didn't even have to bother with the whole "pilgrimage" thing if they could just impose their will into any crystal.
I agree that Legends was a bit cooler, the canon seems a little silly. Why does a lightsaber have to be connected to the force, its just a tool that happens to be employed by jedi. Though probably the reason the sith were able to retrieve crystals is because the republic was notorious for being corrupt, decadent, and impotent, so attempts to undermine their authority were often ignored until the last possible moment (cough CLONE WARS cough). The jedi while political powerful probably did not have the authority to have complete security over every single planet with crystals. If a sith was careful about masking his presence it wouldn't be out of the question to steal some crystals from a planet near the outer rim.
The blade colours in SWTOR have gone bonkers. I usually stick to sensible colour schemes ie. ultra bright core with a matching, non-contradicting aura.
The Legends version had more of a sci-fi approach, while the canon version seems more like something out of fantasy (which is what Star Wars is at its core, after all). So, I'd go with canon in this case.
***** Remember, Lucas wanted to Make a Flash Gordon Movie, but is FORCED to create an IP that he'd owned the rights to, He's NOT Inspired by Star Trek.
That's my thing. So every sith with a lightsaber managed to find these rare crystals back when the Jedi and Republic were in charge of everything? There is no answer that doesn't make the republic and the jedi look embarrassingly stupid.
Two Sith, one giant universe. C'mon you're telling me they'd actually be able to capture them considering they even refused to believe they even existed in the first place?
It makes you looks embarressingly stupid, there are only 2 siths in the galaxy at once, and all planets with crystal are sacred, making it less prone to observers and republic stalkers
Damminh Khoi So the Jedi with all their time being part of the ruling body of the galaxy failed to find wherever every person with a red lightsaber (that was not a former jedi) got their crystals. That makes the Jedi seem incredibly incompetent.
I like how the new canon handles the kyber crystals, but I still miss the cosmetic feature. It's just that it's kind of bland that there's only a handful of colors available to lightsaber wielders in the new canon, when in legends you could have every color in rainbow. It just adds variety.
My thought is that there being only a few colors is thanks to how dogmatic the jedi had become. There aren't a lot of different views of the force because the order is so 'unified' in its beliefs and, as a result of that, there are so few different crystals because so few break away from the traditionalist views of the current jedi.
Super Brad Good, even though i'm not into it myself it's good to know things like that are in both timelines.Makes it more familiar for fans who enjoy both.
@@justchilling704 and if they take a color based on its user personality or whatever why are they mostly blue or green? Shouldn't we have a rainbow of lightsabers?
4:31 You couldn't install krayt dragon pearl instead of crystal you got in the temple, simply because pearl was a backup (optional) item, while green/yellow/blue crystal from the temple was vital for the lightsaber, and could not be replaced with pearl.
I like the variety of crystal colors Legends offer, but I like the deeper meaning and connection to the kyber crystal (and bleeding) in legend. Gorge Lucas named and came up with the concept of the Kyber crystal as a "holy grail". A personalized Holy Grail, what else is a light-saber if not that? It's the only object Jedi's are permitted to "own". To a Jedi, their lightsaber, is their life, but to a Sith, It's just a tool used for bringing death... The "bleeding" is such a perfect addition to the lore. I almost hope Mace Windu did survive, just so Darth Vader can hunt him down and bleed his saber from Windu's purple one. (Just herd Palpatine cackle in my head...) if synthetic crystals exist, I think they should be like a battery, they are drained and disposable unlike the infinite clean, renewable energy of a real kyber crystal. Less mystical less connection to the force, thus color selection is more variety. This would be something pretenders use, or people who's skill in the force is minute or non existent. Good for storm troopers trained in how to use a lightsaber or a former Jedi who is conflicted like Asoka ;)
The Crystal isn't the power source for the blade; it's like the lens the energy is projected through. I'm still trying to wrap my head around how an energy field that comes from living things, somehow affects a non-living object like a lump of translucent rock. And the plural of Jedi, is Jedi; kinda like sheep, fish or moose, for example.
who said it's non-living they are making it out to be more than just translucent rock in the canon, plus Jedi already did meditate with there lightsabers in legends it's more than just a tool
It's more that while the Force flows through living things, it doesn't ONLY flow through living things, but also things like kyber crystals and certain other objects and locations.
"You must feel the Force around you; here, between you, me, the tree, the rock, everywhere, yes". - Yoda Ep. V We see this and the different manifestation of The Force in the "Stonepower" of the children Yoda recently met in the last issue of Star Wars monthly comic. To the points you guys bring up, my thinking is as follows: All matter everywhere is essentially formed, destroyed and reformed when old stars die and new ones are born. In The Star Wars Galaxy, what makes it different from any other Galaxy and our real world is The Force which is in everything as Yoda teaches Luke. Things and people with a higher Midiclorian count just have stronger reactions towards each other. LanIaFortroSha Thanks for the reminder of the pluralization of Jedi. Another good example is Lego. Some people have MANY Lego Jedi whereas I only have one Lego Jedi. :-D
I really dont see how it provides "mysticism" other than just simplifying because alot of people really dislike having to learn every single info about it. And yes,i do prefer things to be more complicated/varied in a story.
This explains why in the canon game jedi fallen order you can only have one color for the double bladed lightsaber while in the legends game force unleashed 2 you can chose to have two colours at once
meh I like the complexity. it gave more choices and didn't deny the possibility of the simplicity side. than again I like the idea of the crystals being neutral to the universe and not all force raped by the dark side practitioner.
Woah you're forgetting the complexity & color variations in the Young Jedi Knight novels. Those certainly were there before your whole theory on video games, mainly KOTOR for color choices. Besides, mostly every KOTOR lightsaber color had someone who used them first in Legends, so they were more homages.
@JaiR if the Sith could make synthetic crystals why did't they use them while creating the death star, the death is powered by one big cyber and bunch other smaller kybers.
The so-called 'simpler approach' also leaves some room for the inserting of some much needed mysticism into the narrative - e.g. the path Anakin's lightsaber has taken throughout the films: first to Obi-Wan, then Luke, then (through a series of events we haven't seen yet) to Maz Kanata, then finally to Rey. It suggests the crystals have some agency in controlling their respective fates, and might be able to manipulate probability through the Force by placing themselves in the right places at the right times whenever they're needed. Or not. That's just my thought-process on the subject. ;-)
Star Wars Explained there was an unfished clone wars episode where native utapau people helped get General Greivous a large green kyber crystal is that where palpatine got the death star laser but i could be wrong
I like both. To me I like that dark Jedi created synthetic crystals since that lacked a true connection to the force. The new canon for Jedi and their crystals is nice addition, however, I I understand the "mysticism" but I feel like the crystal color shouldn't change based on the wielder like some sort of force sensitive mood ring. They could've either (A) Made it so when a Jedi found theirs they'd leave an "imprint" of themselves on the crystal and it'd stay the same color. Sort of like a relic or something. Or (B) Stick with the mysticism part by making a crystal have a color that represents the Jedi when they find it. Like there are other crystals with multiple colors, but only one crystal is calling out to you and has a bond. I just kinda feel like that the Jedi get their crystals now is a little too vague and cheesy for my taste. But I can deal with it. It doesn't change really anything for me in Star Wars entirely.
What i want to know is that if crystals were hard to find by even force sensitive users( unless it was the one ment for them), how was the empire able to mine them without the use of a force user to identity them.
Disney “they are magic and they chooses their masters” Star Wars fans “no just no” Also Disney “you can mine them in mass quantities and use them to make giant super weapons” Star Wars fans “wait.... huh?”
I dig aspects of both. from legends, I like how the color of the crystal was the blades color. But from canon I like the meditation aspect and bonding with the weapon, and that synthetic crystals don't exist. Not a fan of the colors being assigned to a specific class though. But I also am not a fan of blue and green being the most common colors in canon. if the color comes from meditation through the force it'd be better if there was more variety, going hand in hand with the fact that every jedi is different.
Great video. Summed up the new material quite clearly. I don't agree that making a whole new system in the lore involving semi-intelligent crystals that can choose who is or isn't "meant" to see or use them (or some grand and mystical power choosing what crystals one can or can't use) is "simpler" by any stretch of the word. Not to mention that it completely clashes with the pre-existing meaning one can attach to using a lightsaber and the Force.
Probably related to Imperial turbolasers being green, and since there's probably no Force shenanigans at play with the Death Star's superlaser, the bleeding red thing is likely irrelevant. Guess we'll hopefully find out next month, won't we?
If there is one thing I could choose to learn more about right now, it's the Darksaber. Because I have no idea how it works, what powers it, or anything.
I actually like the canon version as it makes the connection between Force users - be they Jedi or Sith - and there weapons more mystical. In many ways it pays more homage to the original science fantasy origin of Star Wars than Legends did.
xbaumann Which it isn't, it may be bending it but it is still part of the force, Crystal bleeding suits perfectly for me, it's also perverting the crystals, twisting heir original intent...
In KOTOR the crystals often had different properties in what's now canon they are just blah. The option to put in a crystal that inflicts extra pain is great for Sith, a crystal that does more damage to droids is great when you know you have to fight a bunch. I personally loved the Krayt, Solari, and Umpari crystals. I think variety is better than the generic crystals of current canon.
As a fan who lived in both Legends and Canon, I like both concepts, but prefer the Canon better. While I do like the color variety in Legends, I like the Canon's symbolism & simplicity of the color coding. And the clear crystals actually being 'alive' and how they can reflect their user/creator's personality as a color aura. I also like the red color's "Bleeding Process". I see it as a final test to prove if you're worthy to master the Dark Side by displaying your desire for power as dark emotions onto the 'living' crystal. Plus, you can "heal & purify them" and they would turn white. Besides, I have a headcanon that it is possible to create synthetic crystals, and that there are crystals from other places that can be used in a lightsaber, however doesn't completely reflect their user's color aura.
3:23 You mention that we see orange lightsabers in canon, but I don't seem to remember an example. Was that just a slip-up or am I forgetting something?
maybe I've just become stubborn. but most of the cannon changes made from the clone wars and rebels really urk me... the universe is too small, details don't line up, events don't carry as much weight or make sense... I'm just not a fan.
give it another 20 plus years old EU will still be better. Disney and new Canonites can stuff their rushed out stories like "Cobalt Squadron" up a Bantha's ass
You should consider that Legends is not one thing. Legends comprise everething that's not canon and since that are tons of different materials diverging in what is not canon it was necessary to try and unify things.
The new crystals lead the way for some issues. Like why would the grand inquisitor just abandon a crystal he was already bonded to just so he could have a red one? If it corrupted during his shift, why didn't anakins change as he murdered children? I'm sure the Ashoka book goes into it more, but I like the idea of a light saber just being a preferred weapon, not a spiritual connection of sorts.
Anakin would have had to sit down and consciously "bleed" his crystal. It doesn't happen without intent. As for the Inquisitor...I guess he wanted a red lightsaber? He probably used his same yellow crystals, and just bled them. I'm just guessing though.
Maybe a Jedi being bonded with a crystal has different benefits to a dark side user who has bled his crystal. Like a symbiant-recycling relationship between Jedi and a bonded crystal, and a parasitic relationship between a dark-side user and their's. It would certainly fit, given the nature of each side.
I'm pretty sure that the Grand Inquisitor took the time and energy to bleed his crystals before transferring them to his inquisitor lightsaber, whereas Anakin never had the time to bleed his. He was sent immediately to the Jedi Temple, then the Mustafar, and after he killed the CIS Leadership, had to fight Obi-Wan and lose his lightsaber afterwards.
The Inquisitors and their lightsabers seem pretty uniform. I would imagine Palpatine wanted it that way, and as a sort of trial, made them "bleed" their crystals to create the new red lightsabers. Not only does it make them look more uniform, but it ensures their devotion to the dark side.
I prefer the crystals from Legends. I grew up with KotOR and it made more sense to me that jedi had different colours based on their role. Also the whole "invisible kyber crystals", "meditating on a crystal" and "sith making their crystals bleed" sounds like mumbo jumbo, and even more over-complicated than just harvesting a damn crystal from a crystal cave.
In legends times I always thought the crystal kind of had the function of a lens, with the energy coming from a power cell. But in the new canon the crystal IS the power source, isn't it?
Personally I like the idea that there is a level of uniqueness to each blade that comes from the user and not the parts that make it up. It allows the lightsaber to be a artifact, with greater story potential then the legends counterparts. The blade of Freedon Nadd, Marka Ragnos, Exar Kun all these blades will be special in some way because of their users not modifications. The force bonds could even linger or build on each other like Anakin's blade now held by three generations of Jedi. Overall I like the change and dont mind them expanding into this further.
i like the concept of a synthetic blade when it comes to red. I like the Canon colors. I think however in regard to ranks, Green should remain consellors, Blue Guardians, so on. HOWEVER, i think Purple SHOULD ALSO be a synthetic blade, as its a designated for the Council LEader, whilst yes, Yoda was the Grand Master of the Council, I never found him to be the Council leader, but rather the Master of the JEdi whereas the Council was more a political branch of the order.
The krystals still kinda have different colours for different kind of jedi. The personality of the jedi partly determins the colour so it's still kinda the case, it's just less official.
I like legends because I like choice, if I want a green light saber with a black core as a sith, then by God I want that choice... New canon is limiting the creativity of Star Wars, something a true Star Wars fan would not except... I'm still mad they made Darth Bane have a tomb, he didn't have a tomb in legends, because the rule of two required him to hide incognito...
Legends all the way, I like the fact that Sith most of the time use more unnatural crystals. The jedi chose a crystal that speaks to them, they have to think for them self what kind of jedi they are not some divine intervention. Disneyverse ruining the Star Wars canon one thing/character at the time
I do like the cannon change though i would like there to be an exception to the rule. Example going with the krate dragon pearl what if that person developed a bong so strong that the force flowed through like it would with a kyber crystal.
The Crystal lore is one of the big things I think canon does better than Legends. I like a little fantasy in my science fantasy stories, while Legends sometimes went too far in trying to make Star Wars hard scifi.
I enjoy the Rebels series so far, but I don't like how the lightsabers look one bit. They look thin and weak like a fencing style rapier, not sure if they are intended to look like that or what but I don't like it.
It was McQuarrie's style, but it's also more reminiscent of the sabers in Ep 4, which tended to look a bit thinner as well. The style guide for Rebels is almost entirely drawn from McQuarrie's early concept art and the styling of Ep4, even down to how they do explosions in space. Zeb is heavily based on McQuarrie's early art for Chewbacca, and Chopper has elements of the early R2 art. Long and short, like much of Rebels, it comes down to fan service. The sabers and general look are fan service to the original film just like Malachor and such are anservice to KotoR folks.
I think the new canon is pretty stupid in regards to the crystals- having the crystal chosing a colour for the user is just doesn't seem very compelling...
I liked both Canon & Legends, save for the bleeding. HOWEVER I am willing to forgive if Jedi can ironically do the same to Dark Side crystals like they did in Legends; do the same "bleeding" process to purify the Dark Side & replace it with the Light.
Totally agree. It is way more interesting that Jedi have a bond with a crystal and, in most cases, choose one for life. Having an opportunity to change them like a socks is downplaying whole misticism of the connection with the Force. The idea that Kyber crystal can sence your presense in the Force and take the color according to your character, your abilities is awesome, in my opinion. And Sith bending the power of the crystal to their will is a great concept too, and seems very appropriate for the users of the Dark side of the Force.
Legends makes far more sense when you consider the vastness of the galaxy and the possibilities. I will admit that I can't say I agree with the concept of bleeding the crystal to get red but again with the vastness of the galaxy you could find a naturally red crystal to bond with.
I do like Disney's explanation for the connections of the user with the crystal. it also explains the few number of colors we see in Canon... however, it totally kills the personalization of the force user's weapon... the idea that the jedi/sith could choose the color he wanted is amazing, and it honors all the long period of content in legends.
CAMil Słota - Drugi Channel I don't believe we even know what powers the Darksaber yet. It has to be something different since it is so drastically different, not only in color but shape, from the other lightsabers.
the black saber was known to be a ancient saber in the clone wars but we dont know if the crystal is natural or created by man like the sith make their crystals
Honestly the coolest part about lightsaber crystals in legends to me was how one of the solo boys, becoming young men, rebuilt their lightsaber using a yuuzhan vong crystal-thing and it gave them a telepathic link that sorta worked like the usual force senses helping them know where the vong were and when they’d attack etc.
I vastly prefer the canon version of lightsaber crystals. I'm not opposed to the idea of synthetic crystals (maybe for a specific storyline) but it just seems like it kinda cheapens the whole connection with the jedi and sith. Feels like they just went out and got their crystals from Costco.
The canon version of this lore is far better thought out and gives far more meaning to the design and appearance of lightsabers. The concept of bleeding is way more interesting than synthetic crystals. In canon Kyber crystals and lightsaber colours feel important, in legends it was just messy and all motivated by just trying to look cool. I have no idea why so many think legends is better on this.
The user imbuing the crystal's color would open up the spectrum even more, not limit it. The fact that Ezra's lightsaber went from blue to green shows that this dynamic is fluid.
SonicBricks I feel like that balance came from the overarching themes of the Star Wars universe. The Jedi/Sith are supposed to be this 1 fantasy element in an otherwise scientific/sci-fi galaxy, so its in your best interest as a writer to develop that difference in tone. That balance that you speak of should be developed from all aspects of the Star Wars universe, not just the jedi. Use the jedi for more magical/spiritual themes, and balance that out with everything else for the sci-fi themes.
I'm a bigger fan of the Canon kyber crystals. I like the mystery and mysticism of the force and I like that a lightsaber can pretty much only be made by a force user and each one is a reflection of its' user.
I like the legends simplified way (I also like the Legends way as well), but the new canon way has totally screwed with why Anakin's blue saber never turned red when he became darth vader, which is a total misstep on the part of the new Storyline crew (Pablo Hidalgo and the others). Anakin slaughtered children and Sand People with that lightsaber and it still didnt turn red? He did LOTS of "bleeding." This is something the new canon NEEDS to explain (with a good reason, not some BS just to shut fans up about it), and until they properly explain the Anakin situation, I'm going to stick to legends.
暗黒騎士 Ankokukishi It seems implied that the crystal has to be interacted with directly by holding it to make it bleed. Perhaps Anakin never gave it thought. He did have a lot going on at the time.
I agree with you about the sacredness of the lightsaber. But I really liked that Luke couldn't just get a crystal for his green Saber because they were outlawed. It took months to build his saber but in an emergency a Jedi could kit bash a lightsaber together as long as he had a suitable (if inferior) crystal.
The Lightsaber crystals from Legends are better. Now Lucas Film can't trully deside all the time what is canon and what is not canon. It's the same thing with Dragon Ball Z and Super. I decide what is canon. The same thing goes for our planets. NASA don't always have the right to decide what is a planet or what is not a planet. Pluto, Titan and X actually are planets.
The lightsabers crystals had more than just an aesthetic use. Your last point is kinda moot, you choose based on stats more than "color to use today". If a canon game made you choose it would be the same because you're complaining about stuff that's basically ludonarrative dissonance. Games give you choices for entertainment sake, but they have a canon route. Starkiller's clone canonically used white lightsabers even if you change them to any other color. He beat Vader, even if you die on the first level and try again.
So with Jedi lightsabers being a bond with a colour based on that bond, and Sith sabers needing to be bled to get their colour, where does the darksaber from the Clone Wars fit in with this?
Blergh! Jedi Knights are no Harry Potter(tm) wizards! The original George Lucas canon/SWEU is better, simply because they'd have to RetConn ALL movies INCLUDING VII to make the "Disney canon" make sense: * One of the greatest threats in the Prequel Trilogy/Clone Wars is for a Jedi knight to lose his Light Saber to an enemy. What sense does a "bonding" make if everyone and their dogs can still use the saber with no penalty? Grievous killed the owner of his trophies, so why did their sabers still function, and quite well, too? * Luke Skywalker in the Original Trilogy wields different sabers (different colours) * Ma-Rey Sue in Episode VII uses Anakin Skywalker's lightsaber (which obviously did not bleed from being Vader's weapon - what, do sabers only bleed for cyclic periods in time???). Ma-Rey Sue being a Mary Sue now may use any bloody lightsaber. But Finn is a "real" character, and we don't know yet even if he is Force sensitive; he still used the light saber. * In The Clone Wars, multiple times light sabers are stolen, taken away, sold... and neither were their owners able to sense the sabers they should have been "bound" to (even if they could sense a "disturbance in the force" otherwise, if a Force user didn't come from planet Naboo - but even if an "Aura-masked" Sith was there, they could sense "something wrong", without pinpointing the user). Nor prevented the "bondage" anyone, Jedi, other Force user or even "mundane", to hack away with the saber of another knight without any problem. * The Padawan in The Clone Wars have light sabers. Anakin was officially too old to start Jedi training with 9 years (!). We can assume Jedi Padawans in Yoda's Dojo started training about 5-7 years. It makes no sense AT ALL that they meditated and got bound to their Magic crystals. The "canon" padawans getting their "magical staff" in the illustration were teenagers. It just makes no sense at all. Yes, maybe the video games took it too far; and light sabers just are no "upgradable weapons", they seem all to be of equal strength. Just let the "possible colours" open, if you should need a pink light saber for R2-KT, take it. Synthetic crystals in Sith/Dark Force user light sabers make a lot of sense, more than bloody "bleeding crystals" and some "bond" and "forcing of the will" that the movies have shown to be totally unnecessary because the saber works no matter what, as well as an "unbound one", and Anakin's saber did neither "darken" together with Anakin, nor would Darth Vader have any reason to "bleed" his saber that would have already be "bound" to him. If you want to have a kind of "living weapon", just take Yuuzhan Vong amphistaffs. Star Wars lore just does not get "cooler" and "more marketable to gullible teenagers" when you "Potterise" it with some Hocus Pocus "bondage" ritual that neither has any effect even to "canon" material, nor does it make the Jedi Knights any more "mystic". Leave the "only one stone"-rule out, drop the "upgradable stats" component from computer games also. Both are unnecessary and bad.
If the force-user builds this specific connection with his lightsaber, how is it possible for someone like Grievous or Finn to use the weapon with its color..?
Once a connection is made with a lightsaber crystal it has to be forcibly (pardon the pun) removed. The crystal doesn't lose its color just because a Jedi dies. And the color doesn't change unless a Sith or Jedi create their own bond with it.
I don't like this "bleeding" thing in canon and I don't like that there are so few colours. One question: Can a jedi form a connection with multiple crystals in canon or are the other lightsabers just some crystals someone gathered somewhere?
I think your main complaint about the Legends crystals is solved by understanding the concept of separation of story and gameplay. In the non video game legend stories no one just went about switching out their lightsaber crystals on a whim. In fact I think that there were cases where a Jedi went to Illum but felt no draw to any of the crystals there so had to seek the one suited to him elswere. Also there was a story where a Padawan treated the choosing of her lightsaber crystal like in one of the video game, just shoving a gem she found in it, causing it to fail at a crucial moment leading her hand to being cut off before her lightsaber exploded in her severed hand.
Thinking about the force bond between a Jedi and his weapon, Obi-wan in Attack of the Clones comes to mind when he tells Anikan "this weapon is your life".
I like the canon version despite it's contradictions. When Star Wars was created only blue and red Lightsabers were supposed to exist. Then while filming The Return of the Jedi the producers realized that a blue Lightsaber appeared to be invisible against the blue sky and made Luke's Lightsaber green instead. Later in The Attack of the Clones Samuel L. Jackson asked for a purple one, but it was unique. Then the EU came along with games and stuff and more and more colors started to pop up and what was supposed to be a high tech weapon became a cosmetic thing.
I totally agree with the Canon approach of only using kyber crystals for the same reasons that you stated in the video. However I do really like the idea of War color combinations being utilized because I think the colors can really review a little bit about the users connection to the force be it dark or light and how that interacts with them as an individual
@@drogadepc the thing that I don't don't understand with the new Canon is why then are most lightsabers blue and green?
To me it just turns the lightsaber into a mood ring, which is incredibly lame.
@@ddy7323 because the Jedi became way more strict and dogmatic, a few hundred years ago and purple blades weren't so rare plus orange was also common back then
@@jettlucashayes8508 we clearly see jedi still have very varying personality and them being more strict didn't stop them from have individuality.
Personally, I like the explanation of how the colors of the lightsaber classify a Jedi's role in my honest opinion.
they still kina do, it's just not as official.
Well the colors still do, it's just that now they work retroactively.
For example, only Jedi whose infused crystals turned out to be golden yellow were Sentinels, at the same time that everyone knew that a Jedi who had a blue lightsaber would most likely be a better choice to send on a combat mission.
Mace Windu's purple saber was a huge advertisement of how close he lived to the Dark Side, and so on.
The only difference is that now the Jedi don't get to choose, rather they fall into the roles that better befit their own nature, which just goes so much better with their tradition;
Mordirit that's what I was thinking like the force is picking the role you were born for
I agree the new Kyber Crystals are way, too much like the One Ring especially sense the Kyber Crystals can now betry users it's just retarded.
Both legends and Canon are fine to me...
Euodias Lee they are monks its ment to be mystic
Same, I like either or
I like both aspects, but I feel they should do a fusion of the two systems.
I think it is more badass that to get a crystal a Sith has to take or steal one from a Jedi
wark93 no it's not it's stupid
I disagree. Bleeding is cool.
Chase B Indeed, they should keep Sith with synthetic ones.
@@Arauto_Kagnos Well I think that it's equally fine that the sith make jedi lightsaber crystals "bleed" and manipulate them to work for them.
@@qr-code6334 I've accepted the idea and even came to like it these past 4 years but I still like synthetic crystals a bit more.
@@Arauto_Kagnos Oh right, the your original comment was posted 4 years ago😂
Im going to be very biased, but I really like the Legends way of things. I like the idea of a jedi imprinting his or her force aura i guess on the crystal in the deuterocanon, but I like the variety and insanity that was present in the Legends canon. and like I said, im just biased towards legends, because that's what I grew up with.
I agree completely with you there.
I like both Legends and Canon lightsaber crystals and who knows they may bring some of the components in Legends to Canon.
Dracothrope101 yep
I like canon more in this case. Especially the way the Sith make their lightsabers red by making them “bleed” as it sort of gives them a bit of a more force like nature.
I like Legends more i'm OK with canon up until this whole "bleeding" thing. It made sense for the Sith to make crystals, how was a Sith suppose to get one on Illum if the Jedi guard the planet? Plus legends had an orange lightsaber, also begs the question how did Luke get his green saber if it wasn't made by him did he actually go to the planet?
Jemi Johnson Obi may have left crystals behind
he may have picked up a few in Ep3
In new canon, Illum isn't the only place you can find a kyber crystal, merely the traditional place a Jedi finds his/hers.
No, just fantasy.
the Legends is more like a Star Trek Wannabee.
***** Remember, Lucas wanted to Make a Flash Gordon Movie, but is FORCED to create an IP that he'd owned the rights to, He's NOT Inspired by Star Trek.
JohnDman2020 Will you guys Stop starting Flame Wars Against Disney, like you're from the Spoil Jihad Movement.
Star Wars isn’t just Fantasy.
It’s Science Fiction and Western too.
I like the new canon besides the crystal bleeding. Sith making synthetic crystals made more sense to me.
That would still be an addition that could easily be made. But frankly, I like the crystal bleeding quite a bit
I like how the new canon handles the kyber crystals, but I still miss the cosmetic feature. It's just that it's kind of bland that there's only a handful of colors available to lightsaber wielders in the new canon, when in legends you could have every color in rainbow. It just adds variety.
Moonbagger1 Relax, most likely new colors will be added in time.
My thought is that there being only a few colors is thanks to how dogmatic the jedi had become. There aren't a lot of different views of the force because the order is so 'unified' in its beliefs and, as a result of that, there are so few different crystals because so few break away from the traditionalist views of the current jedi.
Super Brad So perhaps with new points of view being added more colors do too?
Darth Harbinger probs. white, black, yellowish green, and orange are already canon so why not?
Super Brad Good, even though i'm not into it myself it's good to know things like that are in both timelines.Makes it more familiar for fans who enjoy both.
I personally prefer the legends way of how lightsabers work.
*Prefer(dyslexia sometimes really sucks).
It makes it to much like the One Ring especially with how Kyber Crystals can betray users it's bs.
@@justchilling704 and if they take a color based on its user personality or whatever why are they mostly blue or green? Shouldn't we have a rainbow of lightsabers?
@@ddy7323 Great point we should!
You still have the dark saber
4:31
You couldn't install krayt dragon pearl instead of crystal you got in the temple, simply because pearl was a backup (optional) item, while green/yellow/blue crystal from the temple was vital for the lightsaber, and could not be replaced with pearl.
If you knew how krayt dragon pears work you would know that they can be a complete replacement for kyber crystals.
Infact they're more potent in terms of cutting power than kyber crystals.
@@B0x_T00l
I know, I was only refering to what he claimed he did in KotOR
@@HonestHappyHater Oh, I thought you just meant in general.
@@B0x_T00l the pearls are also cannon
(Just herd Palpatine cackle in my head...)
if synthetic crystals exist, I think they should be like a battery, they are drained and disposable unlike the infinite clean, renewable energy of a real kyber crystal. Less mystical less connection to the force, thus color selection is more variety. This would be something pretenders use, or people who's skill in the force is minute or non existent. Good for storm troopers trained in how to use a lightsaber or a former Jedi who is conflicted like Asoka ;)
Interesting points!
- Yoda Ep. V
We see this and the different manifestation of The Force in the "Stonepower" of the children Yoda recently met in the last issue of Star Wars monthly comic.
LanIaFortroSha
Thanks for the reminder of the pluralization of Jedi.
I definitely prefer legends, mostly just because of the synthetic crystals as opposed to bleeding, though it would be cool to have both.
Damn, I know right...
Jai R. I honestly like canon more
If you think about it though the synthetic Crystal machine pours Darkside energy into the crystal before it’s made so it kind of pre-bleeds it
Synthetic crystals are canon, created via Sith alchemy.
Or not. That's just my thought-process on the subject. ;-)
Where do we get a canon example of an orange light saber?
Darth Vader comic
Star Wars Explained there was an unfished clone wars episode where native utapau people helped get General Greivous a large green kyber crystal is that where palpatine got the death star laser but i could be wrong
you mean morit's lightsaber? because I think that's yellow
Matthew Hagerty Yes, that was intended to be the super laser crystal for the Death Star.
Well, Jedi: Fallen Order has an orange crystal as a pre-Order bonus
Legends Seems Really Easy To Understand
The Jedi do imprint "themselves" into the Kyber Crystals. That's how Mace Windu got his unique purple blade.
What i want to know is that if crystals were hard to find by even force sensitive users( unless it was the one ment for them), how was the empire able to mine them without the use of a force user to identity them.
Let alone, that a crystal calls to the user who was ment to be it's owner and no one else.
Disney “they are magic and they chooses their masters”
Star Wars fans “no just no”
Also Disney “you can mine them in mass quantities and use them to make giant super weapons”
Star Wars fans “wait.... huh?”
"this weapon is your life" - thx for the differentiation between canon & legends here.
Not to mention that it completely clashes with the pre-existing meaning one can attach to using a lightsaber and the Force.
synthetic Kyber crystals actually appear in Star Wars: Uprising as highly explosive and unstable contraband.
My main question is why does the Death Star have a green laser? Surely forcing the crystals to destroy a planet would make them bleed.
Probably related to Imperial turbolasers being green, and since there's probably no Force shenanigans at play with the Death Star's superlaser, the bleeding red thing is likely irrelevant.
Guess we'll hopefully find out next month, won't we?
Does the Darksaber use a Kyber crystal or is it similar to a Forcesaber from Legends?
If there is one thing I could choose to learn more about right now, it's the Darksaber. Because I have no idea how it works, what powers it, or anything.
Isn't it just basically a black lightsaber?
Kind of? It's an energy blade, but there are a lot of differences. The core texture, the sound it makes, and the shape are all different.
Star Wars Explained, maybe we'll get some answers in Rebels on it's origin.
Star Wars Explained Is it even a lightsaber? Like, it's blade seems a lot more solid than a lightsaber's blade.
I actually like the canon version as it makes the connection between Force users - be they Jedi or Sith - and there weapons more mystical. In many ways it pays more homage to the original science fantasy origin of Star Wars than Legends did.
I liked the synthetic crystals. It made the Sith seem like an impurity in the force.
xbaumann
Which it isn't, it may be bending it but it is still part of the force, Crystal bleeding suits perfectly for me, it's also perverting the crystals, twisting heir original intent...
As a Jedi Master, I prefer cubic zirconia. It's cheap, readily available, and most Sith and Jedi masters can't tell the difference.
Then what the hell am I going to do with my krayt dragon pearl cache now?
Sell them for death sticks!
i like the Legends Kyber crystals more it makes the lightsaber more person to the jedi
3:23 You mention that we see orange lightsabers in canon, but I don't seem to remember an example. Was that just a slip-up or am I forgetting something?
There is one in the Darth Vader comic
Oh yeah, that's totally right. Thank you!
+mcdude910
Nobody knows what is canon anymore.
Do you think you could do a Canon v. Legends video on hyperspace travel and it's discovery? Great video btw!
"I believe we'll be learning even more in Rogue One" Nope not really
I'd be interested to see you do a Canon vs Legends on Han and Leia's relationship as both go in very different directions. Great video as always :)
maybe I've just become stubborn. but most of the cannon changes made from the clone wars and rebels really urk me... the universe is too small, details don't line up, events don't carry as much weight or make sense... I'm just not a fan.
Well the new canon is relatively new, so comparisons are going to seem way to imbalanced.
give it another 20 plus years old EU will still be better.
I prefer the legends crystal because they make more sense.
Is it possible the Grand Inquisitor wanted to cut all ties he had to the Order and that is why he didn't use his original crystal?
Sad but true.
I like the eu crystals better.
I'm liking the canon explanation for kyber crystals a WHOLE lot more.
I like the Legends version of Lightsaber Crystals. Seems more fitting.
I prefer Legends, for the variety. Plus as per Legends a lightsaber can have up to three crystals installed, which I like the idea of.
There are synthetic crystals, but they're very dangerous, unstable, and explode on impact.
You'll get used to it. We're just so used to seeing thicker lightsabers is all
Rebels takes stylistic cues from Ralph McQuarrie concept art, which show the lightsabers being much thinner than in the films.
Dansparce Is there an reason behind that or is it just his style?
Commander Shepard It's just my name. You asked for my name and I told you it.
I prefer the variety of Legends. You're right: swapping out gems in your lightsaber to change the blade in KOTOR is fun, but the new Canon is simpler.
So how was anyone able to mine these things if they could not identify them?
I think the new canon is pretty stupid in regards to the crystals- having the crystal chosing a colour for the user is just doesn't seem very compelling...
I prefer Canon it bring more meaning to the force
I like different parts of both. Legends is a bit better IMO.
I perfer legends over canon, especially now.
Legends. Handsdown.
I liked both Canon & Legends, save for the bleeding. HOWEVER I am willing to forgive if Jedi can ironically do the same to Dark Side crystals like they did in Legends; do the same "bleeding" process to purify the Dark Side & replace it with the Light.
Ahsoka does just that in her namesake book. *Spoiler* She kills an Inquisitor and takes his crystals, then purifies them thus turning them white.
ashoka did this
Ah, really? Awesome! :D
That's how she got her White blades. she defeated the 5th brother and took his crystals. purifying them and turning them white.
Ahsoka did it
Totally agree.
You forgot about Darksaber. So, the black kyber crystals are canon.
CAMil Słota - Drugi Channel I don't believe we even know what powers the Darksaber yet. It has to be something different since it is so drastically different, not only in color but shape, from the other lightsabers.
Hopefully Rebels will shed some light on that
Fortner Films 2016
Of course, it's something different, but I think it's black Kyber or something similar. It works in other way.
We know so little about the darksaber, I don't even know if we can classify it as a lightsaber.
the black saber was known to be a ancient saber in the clone wars but we dont know if the crystal is natural or created by man like the sith make their crystals
Canon trying to make lightsaber lore like its harry potter wands or something. Very lame to me to be honest...
The fact that Ezra's lightsaber went from blue to green shows that this dynamic is fluid.
new canon actually seems pretty cooler. I don't get all the hate. We finally get something more mystical than scientific
You have to hate it, because it is new and Disney is involved.
Some people like Star Wars more scientific than mistical
Mr.@empresario Those are the people who like midicholrians....I don't like those people.
Strong Bad I don't like midicholrians. I personally like a fair balance. I think lightsaber crystals in legends better served that balance.
He did have a lot going on at the time.
slpmjb0921 Oh I can understand that, but it hasn't been explicitly stated so I'm still waiting to see how Disney explains this.
I prefer Legend all the way
The Lightsaber crystals from Legends are better.
That's stupid.
The original George Lucas canon/SWEU is better, simply because they'd have to RetConn ALL movies INCLUDING VII to make the "Disney canon" make sense:
* One of the greatest threats in the Prequel Trilogy/Clone Wars is for a Jedi knight to lose his Light Saber to an enemy. What sense does a "bonding" make if everyone and their dogs can still use the saber with no penalty? Grievous killed the owner of his trophies, so why did their sabers still function, and quite well, too?
* Luke Skywalker in the Original Trilogy wields different sabers (different colours)
* Ma-Rey Sue in Episode VII uses Anakin Skywalker's lightsaber (which obviously did not bleed from being Vader's weapon - what, do sabers only bleed for cyclic periods in time???).
Would you ever consider doing a longer video on the timeline of the canon universe?
If the force-user builds this specific connection with his lightsaber, how is it possible for someone like Grievous or Finn to use the weapon with its color..?
Once a connection is made with a lightsaber crystal it has to be forcibly (pardon the pun) removed. The crystal doesn't lose its color just because a Jedi dies. And the color doesn't change unless a Sith or Jedi create their own bond with it.
you have to touch the crystal and put the force into it.
Daniel Zimmermann Like Pablo Hidalgo said, lightsabers are not mood rings 😉
Grievious was a jedi before he became cyborg
Jai R. 😂 what?
Is it just me or at 2:25 why is the death star upside down
Legends one is better.More complex actually make it unique and make more sense
I don't like this "bleeding" thing in canon and I don't like that there are so few colours.
One question: Can a jedi form a connection with multiple crystals in canon or are the other lightsabers just some crystals someone gathered somewhere?
maybe it's just me but I hated them in legends, great vid also!
Also there was a story where a Padawan treated the choosing of her lightsaber crystal like in one of the video game, just shoving a gem she found in it, causing it to fail at a crucial moment leading her hand to being cut off before her lightsaber exploded in her severed hand.
just tell me then: How can Grievous use colored sabers?
He took them from his victims.
He kills Jedi and uses theirs...
But Grievous is no Jedi or Sith and he has no bound with the force. Why the crystal didn't become white (color less)?
aciamage The color stays the same the crystal was imbued with the original user's force.
Thinking about the force bond between a Jedi and his weapon, Obi-wan in Attack of the Clones comes to mind when he tells Anikan "this weapon is your life".
Legends and EU=Sci-fi/Canon=Fantasy Pick your side:
Sci-fi
Fantasy
