      The story behind this from Shadows of the Empire was a minor part of the overall narrative. But of course they had to throw that part out along with the rest of it, because it explained it as Luke using a furnace type device and meditation to create a crystal. Can't have that, because it would hint at the original Sith notion of alchemically producing their saber crystals instead of the edgelord super cringe "bleed my crystal" nonsense that the "Story Group" came up with.

    Sorry. Gotta side with the "Shadows of the Empire" origin of Luke's green lightsaber. It has more resonance that he built the saber and fired his own crystal in Ben's hut using the same Sith ritual but harnessing the opposite emotions. It was in important step for him to take on his own to become a Jedi. Plus, it seems unlikely that there would be any place left in the galaxy with kyber crystals that the Empire didn't know about or have strip-mined to make the Death Star or otherwise weaponise.

      This!
      Blue = natural kyber
      Red = synthetic kyber, made by Sith
      Green = synthetic kyber, made by Jedi
      It's simple, it works, and it didn't break any canon at the time. Really would have made Luke's new Jedi order stand out as something different from the old with them all having green sabers, as well of being a constant reminder of what the Empire did. A blue crystal would become an exceedingly rare thing. Disney is overcomplicating this, they might as well be mood rings at this point. Oh no, his saber's turning red, he's going dark side..oh wait, it's orange, he's a dark jedi who's evil but not all the way..

    There’s a part of me that wishes Luke had used Qui-Gon’s crystal, but I also think it’s good that new canon is showing Luke forging his own path forward. I think both are solid, even if the new canon is putting a bit too much science into the mysticism of how things work.

      Obiwan knew valid Focusing Crystals were incredibly hard to come by in the Empire {don't recall if they were a controlled substance or just something it would have been too slow for Luke to try to track down with imperials breathing down his neck} so he left behind notes on how the Sith synthesized their Lightsaber focusing crystals.

Doing so would make the universe feel small, and Luke’s lightsaber wouldn’t feel like his since he’d have a near exact copy of Obi-Wan’s hilt with Qui-Gon’s crystal. That little sentence of Yoda is actually pretty deep and logical as often. Luke sometimes feels the Force pulled out of him, it frustrates him that his power in not always available or at its full maximum. He wants more and reacts negatively when it isn't brought to him, showing how easy it is to fall in the Dark Side's trap. On the other hand, Yoda trusts the Force, that even if it weakens some period, it will find him again in due time. Yoda respects the will of the Force as a Jedi should. A Jedi lets the Force flow through him, dialogues with it and is thankfull for it. A Sith only seeks ambitious, power and destruction, and will bend the Force against its will. Again a very deep, coherent demonstration of the Force workings.

    The whole idea of a bled kyber being shaped to mirror its bleeder is cool. Makes sense that, in order to heal it, you have to confront the source of the crystal's trauma: the dark sider who tortured it. Luke at this point wasn't experienced enough to do that, but Ashoka definitely was, hence her purified crystal sabers.
    As for using Qui-gonn's crystal, it wouldn't have worked for the same reason the others didn't work for Luke. It wasn't HIS crystal. He didn't choose it, nor did it choose him.

    I don’t totally dislike this… but I always wanted Luke to make a connection with Qui-Gon’s kyber crystal. Since Obi-Wan kept Qui-Gon’s saber, it would’ve been cool if Luke heard it calling to him from Ben’s hut. Luke helped fulfill the prophecy that Qui-Gon devoted so much of his time to understanding. True, a Force User didn't choose his/her crystal. The crystal chose its user. Like in the Clone Wars series, when a group of 6 younglings went to Illum. Met Yoda, they went each of these caves within the entrance in their separate ways - a separate destiny. And they find their own crystals. But gotta difficulties among themselves till they call on the Force and their crystal chose them. Later in the new episode with Ahsoka as an instructor on a training ship. They built their lightsabers, they reflected them based on their personalities, and then they ignited either blue or green.

    Part of me likes the idea of "bleeding" and "purifying" crystals, but I think Disney are overcomplicating it. Crystals shouldn't be sentient, IMO. That's too much like Harry Potter. They should just be rare and valuable objects that are sensitive to the Force. Pour Dark Side energy into a crystal, and it glows red; pour Light Side energy into it and it glows blue or green, depending on whether you're a "guardian" or a "consular" -- a fighter or a thinker -- at heart.

      This is overemphasised. It's not too complex, it's sensible as it pertains to the two aspects of the Force. The Living and Cosmic Force, respectfully.

A Jedi’s crystal and the journey to acquiring it is suppose to be personal and unique to said Jedi. Using Qui-Gon’s would be interesting, but would ultimately have that underlying feeling of not truly being Luke’s. • @JAEtsler
    @JAEtsler Год назад +1

    I gotta say, there's a cool sort of Chekhov's Gun-ish subconscious priming here (if you look at the story linearly with the OG trilogy).
    The idea that Yoda tells Luke about the sun not being gone even during the night. And Luke just goes "duh" (impatiently like Anakin would have hahaha) is a cool setup for the exact philosophy he'll come to integrate in order to redeem Anakin.
    So I see the Qui Gon option. I've always liked that because Qui Gon deserves some more play (as seen via Tales). But this comic actually sets up 2 of the most fundamental aspects of Luke's character (referring both to his literal character and his ethical character).
    1) He is the embodiment of keeping his sights and faith set on the light, even when it's the farthest out of reach it's ever been (seeing Anakin within Vader and Hope within the Rebellion).

    Imagine if luke had the same but he also had quigons crystal and he'd tried putting it into a saber and it'd not worked at all, and it was even starting to turn yellow on the edges, and the guy could then explain this crystal has been carried through a lot of grief and hasn't had a way to express it - you could flash back to quigons life- with luke perhaps not knowing who he is until he see's a young obiwan and perhaps even a young anakin.
    And i think just through flashbacks of obiwan in the desert waiting for luke to get older as he deals with his grief could've been better than the fucking Reva show we got.

    I actually really like this. In Legends throughout his journey Luke sort of just kind of gets hand-me-downs. His first lightsaber is from his father. His second one is made using schematics from Obi-wan and a Sith technique. This lightsaber truly feels like it is Luke Skywalker's lightsaber, and no one else's. It's an issue I've had with most Star Wars media that almost every time you get a lightsaber it doesn't feel like it's your lightsaber, it's just a model of lightsaber that you can customize as you like. And while I find the bleeding lightsaber crystals trying to be a bit edgy, I have to admit Modern Lucasarts is doing a good job of making it feel like whoever owns the lightsaber leaves a significant impact upon it. It's not as simple as just finding the nearest Crystal, putting it in the lightsaber, and then swinging it a couple times. There needs to be a link on a mental and spiritual level or else your quality will suffer.
    And because of that, it kind of explains why Jedi are so gungho on losing their lightsaber. It isn't just losing your cool weapon, you are losing a piece of yourself that ties you all the more strongly to the force. It is a loss of something spiritual, and it's why losing your lightsaber it's such a big deal, and why after huge moments of growth some people have to completely reforge their lightsaber. It was a lightsaber for a different person.

    Some context as to why the Force is receding: recently in the timeline an insanely powerful Sith artifact known as the Fermata Cage was destroyed by the Knights of Ren and it's destruction sent a wave of chaotic Force energy throughout the galaxy. Sometimes the Force is so incredibly strong that those normally weak with it can suddenly move mountains. But sometimes the Force recedes to the point where even the most powerful such as Sidious and Vader have difficulty connecting with it. That's about all I can say without writing a whole essay so for those who want the full story I suggest checking out the Hidden Empire comic

  • @kellygreenii

    This is a change that has been made that has improved the lore. The color of the crystal is about the user’s relationship to the Force.
    Luke’s crystal was green because he was already attuned to the Force in a way that many of the Clone Wars era Jedi were not. Even if he didn’t quite understand it intellectually yet.
    It’s why Obi-wan was concerned, but Yoda was not.
    The choice is between Light and Dark. But when given a neutral crystal and left to his own, he chose Light…and connected with the Force in a way his father was never able to.
    Which is why Yoda was reassured. Although Luke was superficially like his father, when you dig deeper you find his mother. That huge well of compassion.
    It’s a chance to see why Anakin was able to be turned…but Luke was not. Why he was able to pull his father back to the Light when no one else was able to.
