    I went only once in 1997 with my late mother. We stayed at the Excalibur. We went to Hoover Dam and the Grand Canyon. She wanted to see the Liberace museum. We didn't gamble a penny, but loved walking up and down the strip and inside the hotels, especially Caesar's Palace. She died 3 1/2 years later, and this trip is one of my favorite memories of her.

    I'm glad that I got to see old Vegas including the old Aladdin, the Dunes, the Stardust, the Frontier, the Imperial Palace with its FREE car museum Bob Stupak's Stratosphere. I stayed at the Plaza for a week for $15 a night and no resort fee. 99-cent shrimp cocktails large and could be found all over town. Coin machines were so much more entertaining then. This was in the 80's/early 90's.

    The Vegas of the 90's, and prior, was when things were a lot cheaper with the overall desert experience being a fun alternative for an affordable, fun vacation! Back then, the comps meant something, food and buffets were cheap, and people just seemed more friendly. Once the big corporations took over, it's been about money, greed, and profit!!! Sad!

    • @norwegianblue2017
      @norwegianblue2017 11 дней назад +1

      You said it. Back in the early 90s, we used to play $2 blackjack all day long at Caesar's Palace and get comped for breakfast. Rooms at Imperial Palace were basically free since they would give you vouchers to use in the hotel restaurants the equivalent of what you paid for a room. They had these massive hotdogs they sold at Excalibur that they sold for $1. Even being a broke college kid, I could do a weekend in Vegas once in a while.

    Vegas switched from being a place where the hotels attracted gambles by having amazing and amazingly inexpensive drinks and buffets.
    Now that it is totally corporate it is like Disneyland where they have so much business that they expect tourists to pay whatever they charge (and they get it).

      Have you been to Disney lately? It's gotten really really bad. Disney use to be the benchmark with which themed parks and hospitality was measured. Now, with Bob Iger at the helm, its a mess. The great company that Disney was is gone. Maintenance of the parks is poor. Frequently broken rides. They have pulled the theming out of the hotels. Reduced food portions, on food that already costs an arm and a leg, to get more profit. To really get to go on any rides not only do you have to purchase a park ticket that runs between $150-200 you have to shell out for passes to ride the rides. If not, you are going to spend your entire day waiting in lines. Very little of the money the parks generate is reinvested directly into the parks. It took them 5 years to build the Tron Roller Coaster. Universal is building an entire theme park in less time called Epic Universe (which looks awesome). Any of this remind you of the modern Las Vegas? They seem to follow the same business model. In fact, Disney and Vegas use some to the same design firms for their new boring hotel rooms. Creativity stopped driving Disney long ago. The Imagneers have retired and/or been forced out. The true builders of Las Vegas are gone. Bill Bennet, of Circus Circus fame, who built Excalibur and Luxor died years ago. Steve Wynn got forced out. MGM buying Mirage Resorts and Mandalay Resort Group combined with the merge of Harrahs and Caesars Entertainment pretty much has killed competition. I went to Vegas in December for the Fountain Bleu opening (stayed at Shara - which was actually a nice place). Vegas is expensive. A 5 night trip in which I gambled but a few hundred bucks cost $1,700. Think I had 1 or 2 drinks the entire time I was there. How Vegas and Disney have repeat visitors is beyond me. Disney stock is in the toilet and I can see why.

    • @GhostOfBugsy
      @GhostOfBugsy 19 дней назад +9

      Yes, the business plan that built this city was 'cheap rooms, cheap food, 1st class entertainment. The gamblers would pay the bills. It was like this until about the year 2006 or so. Then the Corporations came in and decided, well, we can make serious money by charging the gamblers 4x the room rates, by making them pay for parking, by charging a 'resort fee' on top of the room rate (thanks MGM Corp for this one), etc etc etc.

And now we have a vegas problem. We 99% percent of the time don't gamble, we are food and shows vegas people. But missing out on the 90s/2000s vegas always bums us out. We learned quickly on how ridiculously expensive that place is. 9-12 bucks for a bottle of water is not even a joke in some properties these days! But anyway, it was great hearing a perspective from someone that got to live in that vegas time. The pictures were spot on. OMG, the home movie footage that your wife had....Holy cow 🤯🤯🤯. It's still an amazing site to look down the strip at dusk when the neon casts that amber glow everywhere. Corporate greed has taken the Vegas I knew captive along with all the tourists. My first trip to Vegas was in 1992, just after I turned 21, nothing really is the same there anymore for sure. In 92 at least some of the old school stuff was still around, and Fremont street was still seedy and not covered. Harrahs had the prime rib buffet for 9.99 still.

  • @GhostOfBugsy
    @GhostOfBugsy 19 дней назад +3

    I moved to Las Vegas in 1994. All people used to say then was "it was so much better in the 80's". However, I saw the rise of the Super Casinos - the Venetian, The Wynn, etc. It was nice to see true luxury in town instead of the sawdust joints of the past. But, Vegas has never tolerated 'old', that's why stuff gets imploded. I was at the Stardust Implosion in 2007, I actually had tears for that one because it was the last of the 'old' casinos in my book. I've been in and played in almost every casino in Las Vegas. In 1994, Tropicana and Riviera were already considered low end, so seeing them go away was a good thing. Regarding today's Las Vegas, the one thing that is killing the town is the advent of the "Corporate Casino Hotel". They built these huge monoliths, expecting people to come no matter what. That's not how this town works. As locals, we've detested "City Center" - that pile of steel MGM threw at us. We've detested pay for parking. I remember bragging to tourists that "Las Vegas doesn't need to make pay people pay to park". We've detested "Resort Fees" - a blatant money grab by the corporate morons. We've detested the outsourcing of valet parking. Being a valet at MGM or one of those places in the 90's paid serious money to locals - all cash. You could drive up to any hotel, throw them a $5-$10 bill and they'd park your car 'up front' for as long as you told them. The town in in the 90's was still small, but growing at a moderate pace, nothing crazy. Now the city is out of control, urban planning doesn't exist, and too many people have moved here. I'm happy to have my memories of the glory years in Las Vegas.

    I miss the old Vegas too. My parents met in Las Vegas and got married there in 1977, so I’ll always love it because if it wasn’t for Las Vegas, I likely never would’ve existed. My Mom is from the San Fernando Valley and my Dad was from Kentucky! He just happened to be working at a casino in Vegas when my Great-Grandma took my Mom to Vegas. They really should restore it back to its glory days when it really had soul. Thank you for the tour! It’s been a couple years since I was last there and I stayed at the MGM. Great place to stay, but I have some great memories of fun times with friends/family at the Flamingo!

    My first trip to Vegas was in 1991 to see the Grateful Dead and I went ever year until 1995. That Las Vegas barely exists anymore. The Excalibur was the hot new hotel and then in '94 it was the Luxor. Downtown/Fremont St was really run down. The demographics were also much different. The city was just starting to try and cater to young people and families. Back then I remember a lot of folks my grandparents age. It haven't yet become this cool hip place with the pool parties and clubs with famous DJs. The one thing it did have though is lots of cheap buffets. I was young and poor so I'd eat my fill and then throw food into my backpack for later. $4.99 would keep me fed for a couple days. Good times.

    Went to Vegas a few times in the 80’s and 90’s, and stayed at Imperial Palace, The Maxim, Westward Ho, and Sams Town. Saw shows at the Desert Inn, Sands, Maxim, and Imperial Palace (plus a little side trip to The Palomino 😳👍). I don’t think I’d recognize it anymore. The great things about going to Vegas then was the CHEAP food, and inexpensive cost of a nice room in a nice hotel. You could also see really good shows for not a lot of money then. From what I’ve heard, those days are sadly long gone.

    My Dad lived in Henderson. I used to visit him whenever possible. After he passed away in late 90's, I never went back. The shows, food and entertainment was awesome! I gambled where the locals did. It's sad to see these older buildings going down. The last casino I had fun in was The Dunes. I waiting for traffic to die down. I won 8k playing $1 slot. The Dunes was demolished not long after that. The headline shows arent the same and they're much more expensive, compared to 20 years ago.

    I feel nostalgic Las Vegas is still alive and kicking in downtown Las Vegas. With the exception of Circa, you still have the Golden Nugget, Plaza, California, 4 Queens, Fremont and Main Street Station with generally very affordable rates and deals. 😊
    Shrinkflation has definitely hit the Strip in contrast, though I still feel there are notable exceptions Sunday-Friday at the Sahara, LINQ, Horseshoe, Planet Hollywood, Luxor, New York New York and Excalibur most notably, as well as slightly off-Strip at STRAT and Westgate. So even though you have to do your homework more intently than ever in finding value in Vegas, it's still doable...........though it is unfortunate and annoying how there's not just inflation, but actual price-gouging, at play.

    That was great. I was there in May 2010. That fancy shopping mall with Tom Ford et al was 80% built. Coming from Europe, I knew the name "ESPN" ... there was a sports bar by that name. We sat eating food and a business guy in a suit came in and had a drink at the bar. Middle aged and over-weight. Soon a very slim, young woman in a short dress came in and although all the other seats at the bar were free, she chose to sit beside him. "It's like in the movies with a married travelling salesman alone in Vegas, and the hooker who is having a slow night", says my companion. Sure enough after 10 minutes he left with her ! Just like in the movies ! I had arrived alone at the bus station after Hertz in LA had let me down on a car rental reservation. It was after dark, and that bus station was _scary_ I asked these two Scandanavian backpackers from the bus could I walk with them for safety. So we walked the whole way down the strip chatting. I was backpacking around the world, and treated myself to a couple of nights in Hotel Paris. If I remember well the Osmonds were playing The Flamingo. I didn't know of Carrot Top at the time, but I've seen his stuff since, and have seen a couple of longer interviews with him. He's very talented, very funny, and genuinely seems like a nice guy. I'd definitely go and see him now !
