Arthur Treachers was the best. Met my wife of 41 years working there. How time flies.
Michigan, Telegraph rd.
God bless you both.
Used to be a Arthur Treachers in Southgate, Michigan on Eureka Road.
Wasn't Arthur Treacher the dancing butler in a movie with Shirley Temple , 'Bright Eyes'?
That was my 1st job. They Will always be special to me. My 1st introduction to take out fish & chips. 😊 Hmm mm Good
Born in 1960, these nostalgic videos break my heart. 😢
Roger born in 65
These were happier and appreciative times that I’d love to go back to.
Me too!!!! I hate how our world has changed since then!
Me too
I was born in 1960 and I don’t want to go back, I remember Vietnam Nam on television every night, the gas crises, double digit inflation, horrible pollution, people seem to have selective memory, everything wasn’t puppies and rainbows. The only reason I would like to go back is I would be younger and farther from the end of my life.
Agree totally. Loved life when was no internet and cell phones. God I miss those days
No they weren't. I was there.
Arthur Treacher's fish was crunchy and delicious. The fries were thick crispy on the outside. It is missed.

When I was in college, a group of us went once a week. Was very yummy.
I asked a guy from England what Arthur Treacher's Fish and Chips was like. He said it was "bloody awful".
Arthur Treachers was Da Bomb back in the 70s. I think a big reason was that they were the first fish and chips restaurant. Way before Long John Silver came along. At least in the Cincinnati area.
Back when you could afford to take the whole family and friends out together and still not break the bank God I miss those days. Good memories.
That was long before the government & big business decided their profits and owning a Mercedes & a yacht were more important than quality of the food
I loved Arthur Treachers fish and chips!
Ditto!
As kids we didn’t understand the sacrifices our parents made. It was still extra to go out to eat. Yet they did it. It wasn’t about the food, it was about connection. Thanks mom and dad.
Spot on, Troy!
@@CoconutDreams123 thank you!!
Damn right. I grew up middle-class in a southwest suburb of Chicago, but my parents always took us out to dinner twice a week. Once during the week at a normal restaurant like Ground Round or Arthur Treacher's, then on Sunday we would have either brunch or dinner at one of Chicago's best restaurants such as Shaw's Crab House, Sharko's, White Fence Farm (in Lisle actually). We always dressed in suits for Sunday brunch or dinner. Those were great days and we were a very happy and lucky family. I would not trade my childhood for anyone else's even though we moved at least once a year until I was a teenager, mostly in apt's or rented houses but we sure had fun. Golden days indeed.
Steak and Ale was so good. Great memories.
Steak & Ale was so dark and relaxing….here in Houston…when it was 100 degrees outside…it was sooo nice to enter into that cool restaurant. Food was very good.
You’re absolutely right steak ale was the best
Yes, indeed!
The best.
The one in Little Rock, AR has prime rib on Mondays. I think the price was $10
I grew up in the 60s and 70s. I miss those decades and the quality of life they offered including restaurants. Some of the best and freest times in human history.
You didn't go to Vietnam.
@@jstravelers4094 As a Canadian we never were in Vietnam. Living in Canada was very much like living in the US minus the Vietnam fiasco and the cold war BS.
We're still free but nobody knows it anymore. It's a strange thing.

My how things have changed.
Watching videos like this only makes me sad. I miss the old days.
Me too 😢
And them prices
@@franklaskus2395 you said it 🤣
It was over $10 for a 2 piece fish meal at Long John Silver a couple weeks ago. It’s the last location that I know of
@@franklaskus2395 I was sad to see Long John Silvers go in my neighborhood . They blew Captain D's off the map .
I sure miss those Restaurants
As someone born in 1953, I remember all of them. Burger Chef was my favorite. In my early teens, my family lived about 1/4 mile from Willow Grove Park in Pennsylvania and there was a Burger Chef right across the street from the park. I downed many a Super Shef (sic) sandwich there. Good memories.
I had relatives in Willow Grove and when my family visited them we rode past Dorney Park. It was the highlight of the trip for me.
As a young girl living in Greensburg, PA, we had a Burger Chef. I absolutely loved that restaurant!
Burger Chef was awesome. Serving the burger in plastic bags made the burgers nice and steamed. SOOOO tasty.
Only if you liked how soggy that made the bun.
Arthur Treacher's was our favorite place back in the day. That was where we would stop and eat supper whenever Mom picked Dad up from work on payday. I miss it so much!
I was a kid in the 70s but appreciated the times looking back, life was a lot
Better all around.
I agree
I live in Akron Ohio. I can still indulge in Arthur Treacher a couple of time's a month
Lucky you!!!
Thanks for the info!!
I live in Warren and have been to alot of these restaurants.
There's also one in suburban Cleveland, Garfield heights.
Jealous!
I loved Arthur Treacher's. It was about two blocks from my house in the 1980's, and I'd get off at the bus stop in front of it to go for an inexpensive meal between coming home from college and going to work 2nd shift. When they closed, Long John Silvers was similar, but not the same. Now, even those are few and far between
I too liked Arthur Treachers , but H Salt was my favorite
I loved Arthur Treacher’s so much!
I ate there last month. It was as good as ever. I was visiting Ohio where I grew up. It's on Rockside Road.
@gary, absolutely agree.
Dang.. I miss it and I've never even had it🥴
Always Loved Arthur Treacher's Fish, & Chips. Number#1 Favorite Restaruant. Wish They Still Had One In The City😊.
I loved ponderosa
Me too my I loved it
I am fortunate enough to live reasonably close to 4 of Michigan's 5 Ponderosa locations - the one in Clare is only 15 miles away and is the best of the bunch. I talked to the Ponderosa area rep last time I ate there and he informed me that there are only 29 Ponderosa locations left worldwide - the most being in Puerto Rico! Michigan is the state having the most Ponderosa locations left at 5 locations. - Dan
>It was the best restaurant chain of all time...
Me too
Loved it too. Went to one in Kentucky in early 2000s. Was not the same.
The times and food was without measure. Missed
long john silvers and captain d tried to replace arthur treachers, but it didnt work, the malt vinegar was the icing on the cake.
Long John Silver's is ass. Captain D's is OK but its a far cry from Arthur Treacher's.
We had an H Salt in town that was right there. Both English folks.
@@stilldajoker Yeah! I miss the H Salt Fish & Chips! Mid 70's I always looked forward to the family stopping there on the way home from Santa Anita Park, horse racing... I think we only stopped and ate there when the parents won at the track! lol... But it was So Good!
I actually preferred Captain D's over Arthur treacher's or Long John silver's
Oh yeah, that vinegar, I would rub that shit on my head!
Arthur Treachers was the best!!
What a trip down memory lane. If you want to relive some of those memories, you can visit the Philippines. Lots of old restaurants like Shakey's are all over place.
Yes it is remarkable to see some of those old restaurants still in the Philippines. It’s more fun in the Philippines!
We had an Arthur Treacher's near us. The fish and chips were great. The malt vinegar was good too. Howard Johnson's had good chocolate milk. Shakey's was good.
Howard Johnson's had awesome fried clams too !
The 1950s and 1960s and 1970s and 80s and even 90s was it much better world❤❤
The 70's was the last good decade. The 80's is where it started to suck and it's got worse ever since.
I’d say 70’s and 80’s were the peak of our cointry
@@bargeman100 The 1970s were incredible!
"Free trade" played a major role in messing everything up. GREED and a lack of loyalty by corporations and the people who "represent" us. Ross Perot tried to warn us.
Arthur Treacher's was my favorite. I wish it could come back.
I remember when Arthur treachers opened in Rochester ny.they gave free double deck bus tours for their grand opening.good memories.
Aww…Sizzler…LA native here, and that place was the best!
Sizzler is still my favorite and I've eaten in some upscale restaurants from the West Coast to the East Coast and in between.
Still around.
@when943 Seems like you crave fond memories, not good food.
Sizzler still going strong in Thailand - every mall has one
Yes ! Sizzler was great!
I still miss Western Sizzling Steakhouses. Mmmmm….
I miss them too. They had them until the late 90's here in Louisiana. My ex wife and I used to go there every Saturday night. It was delicious.
They have a western sizzling steakhouse in Florence s.c.
They were great!! My hubby and I bought a couple of thier huge amber colored Glass glasses, that had "Western Sizzlin" printed all over it, in different colors/direcetions😊
Anyone remember those!??!
Me too!
My wife worked at the one in Moline, IL., around 1977. A Chinese restaurant took over the building around 1981.
I'm 57. I remember Arthur teachers, Red Barn, Burger Chef, Ponderosa, Bonanza, Howard Johnson's. We had them here in western ,Pa/Ohio. All are gone.
me too....also 57❤
Arthur Treacher danced with Shirley Temple and also played in two episodes of The Beverly Hillbillies. A great talent.
I met my wife at burger chef she worked behind the counter this August would have been 46 years ago but I lost her last year
Sorry for your loss.
🙏🙏🙏
Oh, I’m so sorry for your loss! As a widow, my life has never been the same! God bless and comfort your heart ❤️
Sorry for your loss. May God richly bless you 🇺🇸
Sorry for your loss mate.
Shakey's pizza was great in the 60's when I was a kid. They had silent movies showing and two kinds of beer. My Dad let me drink a little bit of the dark beer and it was good even for a kid. The pizza was good too.
Me too! I always got to "sample" the dark beer. That's why I have a special place in my heart for dark beer today. Even though I really don't drink anymore!
Our Shakeys had a plexiglass & a long horizontal step where kids could stand up to the plexiglass & watch them make the pizzas from scratch.
I don't like fish but loved the fish and chips at Arthur Treachers
Great restaurants all of them.
I remember H. Salt Fish and Chips. It all of a sudden disappeared.
Used to go to H Salt in Carmichael, California! So good 👍🏻
H. Salt in Pittsburgh on McKnight in the North Hills!
I was a little kid when we had a Sizzler here. I remember the Malibu Chicken with the honey mustard dip-fantastic
As someone who grew up in the 70s. Arthur Treachers was the best.
I had Burger Chef hamburgers and shakes for lunch in elementary school in the early 60s. There was a Burger Chef a few blocks from school, I would ride my bike there and pick up 3 or 4 burgers and shakes, and ride home where my mother and sisters awaited. I remember to this day that if I had the shakes bag and burgers bag pressed together on my bike, the hamburgers would be colder when I got home. Another favorite restaurant that I think is still around in places, but disappearing, is Frisch's.
Mainliner, the original, is still open in Cincinnati. Also, several sites in and around Cincinnati are still open! They STILL have the balloons, suckers and vanilla Cokes! Although, they have changed the sucker distributor and no longer offer the root beer flavor
I loved going to Shakey's when I was a kid.
i had heard of shakey's but never went to one, they didn't have a location in the boston area that we knew of. how was the pizza?
@@steveperry1344 good and consistent
We had a Shakey's in Burbank, Ca (70's) walking distance from home. If it wasn't pizza & pinball for us kids and hearing the live piano player, it was always the pinball until adulthood then it was pizza & pitchers of draft beer! Was a great place!
@@coool8ball Was that the Shakey's on San Fernando rd right near Mc Cambridge park?
@@williamwalker8107 Sure was! It once changed to Tilley's Pizza and back to Shakey's. McCambridge was my hang-out. Lived on Scott Rd. Also snuck into the Cornell Theater once in a while. Mr Big Burger, Marlindo Bowling, Tommy's burgers etc..Also hang-outs...
I remember all of these restaurants, thanks for the memories! Now I'm hungry...
Same here
I miss sreak and ale , Quincy steakhouse , Western sizzling steakhouse house, Dodges chicken that was open late at night. The Steeple Drive in that sold the best burgers, hot dogs , milkshakes etc. The Varsity restaurant sold probably the best burgers, fries hot dogs and other things on the menu. All of these places were here in South Carolina but i truly miss the grocery store in A&P , Winn Dixie, Community Cash , Cash & Carry etc . Man those were the good ole days
Winn Dixie still has stores in Florida. I’m in Tampa and there are several here.
Still have varsity restaurants in Georgia
The 1980s were cool young adult fun. The 1970s were childhood bliss.
Absolutely 💯
I went to Arthur Treachers every Good Friday
Bring back Howard Johnson's!!!
Hojos!
No thanks, our family got food posining there.
Had the best all u can eat fish + clams. Miss ho- jos!
No thanks.
Clams!😮
Who do remember Big Boy restaurant.
There used to be a Big Boy restaurant in Elgin IL. My mom and I went there all the time.
🤚I do. My first hamburger was from Big Boy in PR! Was it 4” or 5” round patty?
Fresno,California had one, If i got the combo (i was about 10 years old) i had to eat it all. i guess thats why im a big boy...delicious
@@markkolstad7076hello fellow Fresnan I remember the statue on our main street of Blackstone Ave. I remember Grandy’s restaurant down the street as well along with Pistol Pete’s Pizza. I remember Happy Steak chain restaurant as well which doesn’t exist anymore.
I remember it. Can't remember the food.
I worked at Arthur Teachers for about 6 months in the mid 70s. I had burns up and down both arms almost the whole time.
I worked there back when Catholics weren't allowed to eat meat on ANY Friday, not just Lent and Advent. There was always a line out the door on Fridays. Lived in a super- majority Catholic town.
Same. We used to eat frozen breaded shrimp every Friday. Nasty stuff. Went parochial school.
The Arthur Treachers in Ohio WAS in Austintown. I had eaten there for 50 years. It was sold to the employees a few years back, and the taste and quality remain.
I miss Arthur Treachers. I miss their fish and their baked potato & their potato bar.
Here in Michigan I miss Big Boy & Bill Knapps. Great food.
I remember all of these and then some, The Cuckoo Clock, Dog & Suds, Red Robin, Maryland Fried Chicken, Long John Silvers etc... The good ol' days!
I miss the Red Barn.. Moved to Columbus Indiana in 1975, was 6 years old. There was a Red Barn two blocks from our new home, was the closest fast food place, heck, one of the few fast food places in Columbus, was a treat to go there on Friday night. After they went out of business it was turned into an oil and lube shop, which I think is still there.
I miss Lum's and The Swiss Chalet also Steak and Ale was good too. We had Duff's all you could eat where I lived years ago they were pretty good.
Lums was the place to go when you had the "munchies"...lol! Chuck's Steak House was my favorite. The used to serve button mushrooms marinated in Bourbon served in a small crock dish. They had salad bar and great steaks!
Duffs was great! They moved to Tampa and still are open.
@@mattdaugherty359 Yeah my Dad used to love their bread pudding 🍮
As a Canadian, a trip to Daytona was not complete without a lunch at Duff's. Loved the chicken and stuffing but I think the best part was the revolving carousel that was continuously filled by hidden kitchen staff.
Lums…hot dogs steamed in beer!
Yes, wish they were still around=, fish and chips.
I miss Sambo's the food was good and the name was hilarious
My first job as a teenage There name was their downfall
People don't realize that the name was a combination of the two owners names put together.
I worked there my senior year in high-school.
Sambos was originally called "Little Black Sambos" and had a stereotypical little black cartoon boy with big lips etc. on their sign. Not a good look.
@@ge2623 of all the sambos signs I ever saw, I never saw that. Then again I only first heard of it in the latter 70s when I worked there.
I loved Burger Chef!
And Biff Burger...😮
Make Restaurants Great Again! ❤🇺🇸🙏🏻👍🏻
Omg you made me laugh thank you. Send me a bill, charge me double
Howard Johnsons had the best hot dogs ever. I hadn't thought about Shakeys in years or Steak and Ale will always make me remember how my late Dad and I had some of the best moments in my life. Thanks for bringing back the good memories my family had at those places.
Burger Chef and his sidekick Jeff, who always ended the commercials by saying, "Burger Chef, you're incrediburgable!"
Farrells ice cream in California was a great place 🍦🍨🍦
I ate The Trough!
Yes! We had one in Escondido, ca
Farrells old fashioned ice cream parlor. It was based in Portland, Or and i went there often for family and friends birthdays.
I played in a band at Shakey's pizza Thursday nites in the late 70s they paid us $40 a piece with free pizza and beer.
My dad opened up the Arthur Treacher's in Batavia, New York. It was a big grand opening in town with a double decker bus and everything! I got to meet Aurthur Treacher himself. Now it's a Hardee's.
Born in '57 and I remember a place mom and dad would take us to eat out. It was call Frost Top and it was a car hop drive in burger joint in Austin. I can still hear the sound of mom and dad folding that pale white waxed paper back to hand us our burgers in the back seat - 3 of us kids at that time. When we grew to 5 kids the treat was a semi annual trip to Luby's cafeteria. Dad would say "take all you want but make sure you can eat all you take". Simpler times for sure!
When I was a Catholic orphan, one of my fondest memories was Fish & Chips restaurant. When I was adopted by Lutherans, they had never heard of the place. They took me somewhere else for fish and chips, but it weren't nearly the same.
I only remember two places that specialized in fish and chips. One was Arthur Treachers and the other was H. Salt Esquire
I'm Lutheran and we always knew. I ate there again last month. See comment above.
I was an orphan too, at Saint Vincent’s. I turned out ok, but I still don’t feel like I belong here, I still like fish 🐠 every Friday though! 😇

I remember & loved most of these. Here’s another one. Taco Tico. Fresh pepper sauce made daily. Burger Chef would load on a mound of shredded lettuce.
St. Louis had them all. I loved every one of them. Way back when eating out was affordable. Ponderosa 16 oz T bones for $2.60. Shakeys is my all time favorite pizza.
Makes me cry seeing the old restaurants. I was born in 1960 and used to go to authors fish and chips 😢
Ponderosa was a family place! We loved it. And we would meet other families that we knew there.
You've gone and done it I'm hungry. We have gone to all except the last three but knew of them. Thanks for the memories.
One Arthur Treachers left in Ohio one hour away. We still drive there once or twice a year. Still my Favorite
I loved Bonanza . Oh man I hope heaven is I get to be a kid in the 60s and 70 s again
I lived in a small town in West Virginia and fondly remember eating at Burger Chef and Bonanza. Yum! These were so popular in our town. What a treat to eat out then! 😊
Shakey's Pizza Parlor....that's what I miss...A & W root beer...great pizza...
I sure miss Arthur Treacher's!!! There was one at Fairfax Circle that vanished around 2010!
I remember it well!
That is the one we always went to, lived in Oakton at that time.
The 3 restaurants mentioned here that I miss the most are Shakey's, Arthur Treacher's Fish & Chips, and Steak n Ale. Shame to see such good places decline into nothing.
Oh gosh I have a Shakey's memory for you. Last time I saw one was in Maryland. It was a high school hangout. Flash forward to 2016. While in Los Angeles for the Orioles-Dodgers series, I found a Shakey's on Santa Monica Blvd. Learned all the Shakey's outside California were closed. They only exist in California now.
I worked at Arthur teachers when I was a teenager. I never got tired of their fish and chips. I still think about it and my mouth waters. Bring them back!
The only two I can remember in this video is Burger Chef and Sizzler. Either one was top notch. I really miss them both
Sambos. Their pancakes were da bomb!
Oh yeah. What did they change their name to?
Arthur Treachers, Shrimp Boat and Red Barns were among the best Restaurants back in the day, the food was amazing much much better than what we have today
Yep. The kids of today are so unfortunate. Maybe that's why they're all so miserable all the time.
The Big Barney @ Red Barn was THE BEST fast-food burger ever created. Their fried chicken was also second to none! It was TRAGIC when the last one in the area shuttered its doors…
My Mom & I used to go to Sizzler's in Ventura, Ca. every wk. I loved their food. Very nice memories. (Also Arthur Treacher's sounds great; too bad they closed.)
A+ video!
LOVE IT! Would love to go to those restaurants!
My dad was a manager of Rhotons restaurant, they had 8 locations in the Cleveland Ohio area back in the 60's- 70's. The signature burger was called the 49er " the big burger".
All good places to go and eat. As far as hamburgers go, I miss Gino's-I loved the Gino's Giant.
bonanza and ponderosa and sizzlers was our to go to resturuants for special days birthdays or sunday dinner
In the 70s , my grand motherwould take me to Howard Johnson’s. I liked it.
Oh man, Arthur Treachers...my mouth is watering right now. What a great place!
I miss the Big Boy coffee shops. I’ve been told that there is still A Bobs Big Boy in LA. But there are none left where I live. Growing up in IL we had Marc’s Big Boy. Later moving to PHX AZ there was Bobs Big Boy. Also miss Farrell’s.
In Georgia, we had Shoney's Big Boy. The Big Boy franchise is gone, but we still have Shoney's in Vidalia, GA home of sweet onions.😊😊😊
I loved the Big Boys famous strawberry pie! All fresh strawberries 🍓.
There was at one time a peach, and, strawberry and, several other flavors of those short cakes, at Frisch’s Big Boy but, now there’s only chocolate but, they still have strawberry 🍓 pie babies and, strawberry cheese cake! In the South East it’s known as Frisch’s which they are starting to go out of business as well but, there is one by where, I live is up and, running and, it though has went down hill badly! Last time, I was in there, a elderly gentleman told them his sandwich wasn’t cooked right, the waitress told him, she’d bring him out another one, well, he just up and, left! Then, on top of my burger not being cooked right, my onion rings were all burnt and, I had to wait on my bus a while so, they went and, got me another order and, sure enough it was just as bad as the first meal. After that, I haven’t been back, it’s pretty pathetic that they hired a young guy that told them he could cook and, they took his word for it, he couldn’t even get a frozen meat patty cooked all the way through and, he wasn’t able to cook half of the food that the waitresses had to serve to their customers!
Yup - Still a Bob’s Big Boy in Toluca Lake, CA - complete with car hops, Friday night classic car owners showing off their cool rides. Best blue cheese dressing on the planet!
@@melaniesharp397 I’m jealous!
I think Treachers closed due to the "cod wars". They couldnt get same fish anymore.
You are correct, the cod wars between Iceland and Great Britain drove the prices up so no one could afford the cod anymore.

There is still one left in the Cleveland area. I'm going to have to go there!
As a Brit living in Texas I sure wish Arthur Treachers was still here. Could just fancy a good F and C right now.
You and me both. I was stationed in the UK when I served in the USAF, I sure miss the real thing. I miss Arthur Treachers as well, and I think you would have liked them also.
Author treaters fish and chips It’s in mentor ohio,we had a ground round in Wickliffe Ohio it closed in the 90s,we had a ponderosa in mentor and in Wickliffe we would go after church.we miss these restaurants.
Arthur Treacher's seems to have been replaced by Long John Silver's but those are now pretty much gone.
One in Ripley,WV..ring the bell!!
Long John Silver's is trash. No comparison to Arthur Treacher's.
Sizzlers in Galveston TX. in the 1980's, affordable!
I Loved Arthur Treaters
Thanks for the memories so much 😊❤
Ho Jo's was the best memory of this video for me!
I remember a lot of these restaurants and I really like them. The funniest thing is, too long ago. I saw another RUclips video that featured most of the same restaurants. except the title of that video was the worst restaurants that were that we are glad that are gone forever! So I guess it all depends on your point of you, but I definitely think yours is better cause I like these restaurants
I loved Arthur Teachers on Bloomfield Ave. In Montclair
Yes those were the days. I sure do miss the Ground Round and those wonderful peanuts.
Shakey's was a favorite as every Friday night my parents always either took us to a restaurant
or they would bring something home for supper like Chow Mein. I loved those Friday nights.
I love these trips down memory lane!
