She'll like sad but true even better...btw it's about a soldier after war, no arms, legs, voice.
How could you not figure out this about a soldier who got his sight, arms and legs blown off by a landmine? He says it in lyrics. Gotta pay attention a bit more.

I think it was a reaction as "is it finished?"
Welcome to the dark side LOL. My son went metal player to rapist and beat mixer. His lyrics are tight too, just a different sound. Metallica has a way of getting further out. This song you really have to know the context.
It's like watching a human metamorphisis,it's great watching, it's like an awakening
The song is literal. Soldier blows up, has no arms, no legs, he’s blind and deaf
Its more literal...as in James felt the way the Soldier did...during his childhood and as a result of it.
Yup, WATCH THE VIDEO.
"One" in the Metallica song "One", was referring to the, one in 1000000.... Something, OF WAR trauma patients in a disconnected state of stimulus consciousness. Or a block of touch by pain. (worse than hellen kellar as there is no touch stimuli) Where nothing can be done to reach their mind.
Not literal.
The song is about James' ultimate nightmare. Not being able to communicate in any way with anyone else. The song only became about the soldier after his brother told him about the movie "Johnny got a gun" and gave him an easy way to construct the lyrics about someone that had no ability to communicate.
The true horrors of war.
But those lyrics are so deep and so real that it also speaks to the horrors many people experience just having to wake up every day with no hope and no true ability to cope with the realities of life.
Life is a battle all in itself for far too many people. A agonizing war that rages on until the bitter end. So tragic.
@@davidbeck6188 For about 20 years I tried to coax the littlest information out of my dad about his time in India in WW2. I got nothing. Sober, drunk, away at friends, away on holiday on a different Continent.... All I ever got from him was a few memories and him reaching for photos of his with his regiment. There were a couple of pictures that always stopped the conversation and I felt they meant the most to him. Those are the ones I treasure from his past the most. I don't display them but I will honor them forever.
From talking to others this is the same.
I didn't have the best childhood - not the richest, but his and my mothers love meant so much. I remember the simplest things so much.

I love watching black folks get introduced to metal!!!!!!! The expressions on your face of your mind being blown is legit amazing. United we stand. One race..... human race!!!!!!!
It’s refreshing that younger generations. Let alone the young black generation is exposing themselves to rock and metal. They’re discovering more and more music. It’s a shame that the young black generation doesn’t know more about their culture and influence in music. Especially rock, blues and metal. The collaborations in the 80’s and 90’s with Aerosmith and run dmc, anthrax and public enemy, in living color, Hendrix, slash, Tom morello and zack de la roach. There are tons of black and also half black musicians that the younger generations should know. School really needs to teach it during history and art especially.

Love y'all getting into Metallica. You should also check out Creeping Death about God's punishment of Egypt for enslaving the Hebrews or Fade To Black about depression and suicidal thoughts. Metallica master heavy topics like that.
Especially the live version from Moscow.
Fade to Black is actually about James Hetfield's guitars being stolen.

Wow! I did not know that 😱 Thanx for sharing
Man I've been listening to this song for like 12 years and never knew that, the layers get deeper every time
For real???
James only sings like 3 minutes out of nearly 8, but the music tells the story. The lyrics convey context, but the music conveys emotion throughout, loneliness, despondency, sadness, and the primal desperation of someone who is unable to live and unable to die pleading for someone to make it all stop, but unable to communicate that to anyone. Heaviest song I've ever listened to in my life.
"The music tells the story". This is literally true. Lars is spelling "kill me" in Morse code during that solo.
I always tell people that metal is more akin to classical in that the instrumental portions are just as integral to the composition as the lyrics, if not more. GOOD Metal is music to enjoy, savor, and chew over with your eyes shut in a dark room.
@@mckrackin5324 breh.. the song is based on a movie where someone literally loses his sight, his speech, his arms and legs. its about Johnny goes to war. and the only way he can communicate is through morse code. its not as deep as people think it is. the problem with a lot of music and perspective in general is people really try to psychoanalyze shit as with writing. in music and writing is someone says, the room was blue people automatically think.. oh its because they feel sorrow, or down. in reality.. could just be describing the damn room they are talking about. the simplest answer is usually the right one damn near everytime unless song lyrics and written poetry has set the bar for it to be a double meaning. most often, its not that deep.
oh and he lost his hearing because of the explosion. hence why he is trapped in himself. its a very grim and dark movie btw. watch at your own discretion.

Two fun facts for you:
1.) Metallica bought the rights to the movie "Johnny Get Your Gun" so they could put clips of the film into the music video.
2.) This was also the FIRST music video Metallica did and that aired on MTV. When they did that, they took some flak for it, being told by some fans that they "sold out to MTV".

The soldier that "One" is about is not in a coma - he's fully aware while being tied to machines that keep him alive in the hospital. He's essentially paralyzed. He has no arms, no legs, can't see, can't speak, cannot communicate with the outside world - he just exists in his own mind. Imagine that darkness is all that you will ever see and pain is all that you will ever feel. BUT... he does find a way to communicate and you'll have to watch the movie that this song is about to find out. The movie is called "Johnny Got His Gun". :)
Chris listens to the first verse of One: "I'm getting suicidal thoughts".
Based on the movie Johnny got his gun. About a soldier who literally lost everything except his life from a landmine
It was actually a book first. I read it for a book report in 8th grade. My teacher was like ...wtf??? 😂
Actually it was an artillery shell in the movie
@@steveurkel4561 did you also watch the movie, and if so, did it miss any central themes or thoughts of the book? The movie was great!
Yes. That book was Johnny Got His Gun by Dalton Trumbo. It was one of the mandatory book for my kids when I homeschooled them. Read it when I was 16. I was so excited to see someone write a song about it.
I too did an oral and written book report on "Johnny Got His Gun." I was in 10th grade though, and picked it out myself. After my oral report in front of the class. I then threw in a VHS of the video for "One", and everyone watched with their mouths open. Needless to say, there were many questions asked afterwards. LoL 😆

I've watched quite a few of your reactions to Metal and I just gotta say that it is so refreshing to see how you react. The way you approach with an open mind is great. You see the talent and technical ability it takes to make this type of music. I love how you actually get into it.
There are so many genres of music that I like but I'll admit that I'm pretty closed minded when it comes to Hip Hop and Rap music (assuming that's what you're mainly into). I haven't really ever given it a chance. If you could suggest 1 or 2 songs/videos that might open my eyes I'd be willing to check them out.

They don't get it...
Definitely an authentic first reaction there. Could we have a second reaction video where you watch the official video to this song? Would be awesome!
Yea they should react to the video for sure !
This song is based on the novel and movie "Johnny Got His Gun." The main character steps on a landmine during WW1 but is "saved." He wakes up limbless with the loss of all of his senses, except his mind works perfectly.
Yeah the band actually bought the rights to the film so they could use it.
Well, This song is about a soldier fighting in a war and a mortar blows off in his face. He can't hear, see, smell, taste and he doesn't have arms or legs. He comes out of a coma in a hospital. During the time he is in the hospital he reflects on his life and things his father told him. Eventually the doctors get worried because he's having spasms all the time, but he doesn't seem to be dying. They call in the general and he can't figure it out either but the soldier with the general recognizes it. "It's Morse code," he says. The general asks what he is saying and the soldier looks for a minute and then says, "He is saying K-I-L-L- M-E over and over again."
As I recall, the lyrics are based on the 1939 novel Johnny Got His Gun by Dalton Trumbo, which is about World War I. A specific passage that inspired the song is: "How could a man lose as much of himself as I have and still live? When a man buys a lottery ticket you never expect him to win because it's a million to one shot. But if he does win, you'll believe it because one in a million still leaves one. If I'd read about a guy like me in the paper I wouldn't believe it, cos it's a million to one. But a million to ONE always leaves one. I'd never expect it to happen to me because the odds of it happening are a million to one. But a million to one always leaves one. One."
James Hetfield was introduced to the book by his older half brother, David Hale, who was also in a band.
In 1971, Johnny Got His Gun was made into a movie that was directed by Trumbo starring Timothy Bottoms and Jason Robards. The video for the song uses images and monologues from that movie.
This was the first single released by the band to feature bassist Jason Newsted, who continued playing with Metallica until 2001. You have to listen very carefully to hear his playing, however, since the bass was buried in the mix.
When ya know whats coming, and your waiting for it like a landmine 🤘🏼
7:00 literally the EXACT reaction i got from my black friends in college when i showed them this song at this part LMAO subbed
The Call of Ktulu, and Orion are full blown masterpieces that take you on a journey to another place, and there isn't a single word. Headphones are a must, sit back and relax, there is nothing to see so close your eyes, and let your mind go with the music. When it is over open your eyes and tell me where you have been. The lyrics are pretty literal in this track. It's about a soldier who stepped on a landmine and lost both arms and legs, sight, and hearing. He's just a body laying there with no way to communicate or even know if anybody is listening. It's based off of a movie that is based off of a book. The music video tells the story pretty well. It's pretty heartbreaking.
i'm so happy the younger generations is listening to different types of music, not that crap that's on the radio now a days, keep it up guys!!!!!!!!!! Love the reaction!!!!!
"I don't know where to go"

Oh, in a reaction....
This is just one of the greatest metal songs ever hands down
"wtf was that?" greatness my friend. legends.
Metallica "BATTERY" with lyrics!..you will want to punch somebody! LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!
Y'all opened up a whole other interpretation of this song . Thank you so much for for listening.
The singer basically puts himself in the shoes of a soldier who stepped on a landline. That landmine took all of his limbs, his ability to see, speak and hear and in general it took everything from him.
This soldier is being kept alive by machines "fed through the tube that sticks in me". And he doesn't want to live "hold my breath as I wish for death" but he can't kill himself - "I cannot live I cannot die, body my holding cell". A prisoner in his own body.
This song is based on a book/movie called Johny Got His Gun. The official music video has clips from the movie. It's a story about a soldier that lost all of his limbs and his face to a landmine. As a result he lost his sight, hearing and ability to speak and is kept alive by machines. His only form of communication is banging his head against the pillow in a morse code pattern. In return, someone taps out morse code on his forehead in response. It gets to the point that he just wants to die but has no way to do it himself. So then he taps kill me over and over again. He eventually gives up and refuses to communicate anymore. He just lays there waiting to die.
@John Nichols Thank you for the correction! I greatly appreciate it. 😁
The book is Johnny got his gun, same name for the movie
"What the fuck?" LOL, love that reaction! I am old so this is the rock music I grew up on. Love to see the cool kids still enjoying it!
I love seeing reactions like this. I still get goose-bumps when I see how others react, especially at about 5 min and 26 seconds into the song. I grew up listening to Metallica every now and then, but didn't appreciate them much until I turned 16 in 1993 and installed a massive stereo system (six 12 inch subs and 16 other speakers) into my vehicle with money I had been saving up for a few years. I don't know what all you guys can hear on your setup, but headphones and a Walkman from the 80's didn't do it for me. It wasn't until I could hear all the ranges of sound on a quality system that I feel in love with Metallica's music. Unless you're listening really close, you can't always hear the bass and drum work on albums before the Metallica Black album. Now days, a good set of headphones will do, but when I heard One for the first time on six 12's, I was instantly converted into a mega-fan. And ever since, I've always been much more into how the music moves me, not necessarily the words. Don't get me wrong, Metallica has some deep messages, but to me, they only need to give you a little taste with the lyrics and then the music tells the rest of the story. When people ask me what kind of music I like the most, I respond with 'Metallica' because to me, they are their own genre. Great job guys! Loved the video!

Like others have said, this song is literal. It’s brutal in its simplicity, probably my favorite Metallica track
It's a quite literal song. It's about a soldier who stepped on a landmine being kept alive on life support. He can't tell the doctors that he just wants to die. He can't communicate. He lost his speech, lost his sight, and lost his hearing. He only has his brain to keep him company.

James Hetfield wrote this song after watching a black & white movie about a soldier who was blown apart, no legs, no arms, can't speak, and he's blind and deaf, by a land mine during WWI....he communicates using Morse Code by tapping his forehead on a nurses hand....all he keeps repeating to that nurse is ""kill me, please kill me"....

It’s inspired by the book/movie “Johnny Got His Gun” about a soldier who got blown up in the war. He is kept alive by machines. The video features clips from the movie. It’s one of the best videos ever made, IMO.
It's about a soldier in war who hit a landmine and has his leg, arms, sight, sound, etc taken. and this song is his thoughts in his head he cannot express to people

This song is actually isnpired by a very old movie called Johnny got his gun (1971) which I think Metallica actually managed to get the rights for. It's a anti war movie that follows the story of a young soldier that gets severely injured from an explosion. He loses his limbs his jaw and all of his senses except he can feel being touched. The character get's very lost within himslef since he did not loose his concious and thoughts as the medical staff and his authorities have beleived him to. He basically can't tell if he's awake or not (if he's dreaming or what is real). In the end however he finds a way to communicate with a nurse via morse code and head bobbing. The only thing he asks the people who he can communicate with in the end is to end his life. At times a rough movie to watch. The scenes in Metallicas Music Video are also scenes from the movie.
That back store makes it even more epic, holy shit
"Joe Bonham, a young American soldier serving in World War I, awakens in a hospital bed after being caught in the blast of an exploding artillery shell. He gradually realizes that he has lost his arms, legs, and all of his face (including his eyes, ears, teeth, and tongue), but that his mind functions perfectly, leaving him a prisoner in his own body.
Joe later attempts suicide by suffocation, but finds that he has had a tracheotomy that he can neither remove nor control. At first Joe wishes to die, but he later decides that he desires to be placed in a glass box and toured around the country in order to show others the true horrors of war. Joe successfully communicates these desires with military officials after months and months of banging his head on his pillow in Morse code. However, he realizes that the military will not grant his wishes, as it is "against regulations". It is implied that he will live the rest of his natural life in his condition."
Wow....this will echo for thousands of years if humanity makes it that long
@@tremblence It's been a while since I saw the movie. But that summarises the story pretty well. I don't think though it was based on a real case. I really hope it wasn't.
@@Rouwiinator Who knows, but its quite probable, definitely believable
I like how that whole story climaxes to show that despite all the absolute horrors of War, its "against regulation"
Thats basically how life is today, in the next 600 years, globalist agendas will ravage the planet with proxy wars and being anti-war will be deemed "against regulation"
That was the most honest and amazing "What the fuck" moment I've seen. Does my heart good!
Y'all are so cute. The ending parts is like reliving a war scene. Notice the drumming sounds like gunshots.
All Metallica up to this album has some of the best guitar work you'll EVER hear
This song raises the hair on my body. Seeing them live was amazing
MEGADETH: Holy Wars

Rage Against The Machine, "Bullet in the Head" or "Bulls on Parade".
Ryan Parsons they’ll fucking love Rage
Love it but I think they start with Down Rodeo or Renegades of funk.
Love how the lyrics tell exactly what’s goin on and they still don’t figure it out lol guys are funny
you don't have to do a reaction but do yourselves a favor and watch the official video.
One of the greatest songs with lyrics and instruments and how they just come together so clean
BEST FIRST TIME REACTION VIDEO EVER !! You guys are the BOMB !!
Let Metallica show you how little words are necessary. “Call of Ktulu” and then “Orion”.
Brett G to live is to die as well
Suicide and redemption
No, they'd just talk over it :(
Cheers from Uruguay guys! Do Iron Maiden's "hallowed be thy name"!!!
Y’all should get on some Deftones if you haven’t already. Change (In The House of Flies) and Digital Bath would be a good starting place! If y’all want a little hip hop thrown in there, Y’all would probably really love Back to School (Mini Maggit)
I second a reaction to Change
This song is about a movie called JOHNNIE GOT HIS GUN It’s anti war
Finally somebody's got it right
Wrong! The movie and the song have a similar theme, that's why they use clips from the movie in the video.
This song is based on an old movie about WW1, called "Johnny got his gun".
Metallica- Fade to Black.
Good reaction! React to Disposable Heroes with lyrics by Metallica it has a very deep meaning. You can't go wrong with that one!!

Nightwish- Ghost Love Score live at Wacken!
Fuck yeah! I’m 59 years old and THIS is my music!
It just takes you over. But you have to listen to more of their collection…because it does get better.
If we, as Americans…come together and not be hostile towards each other…life is BETTER! Love y’all
I would suggest Metallica - Ride the Lightning.
Another vote for Orion. It's a musical Masterpiece!!
I don’t know if they r ready for that
Ive watched all your metal videos..... and @6:05 you have officially become headbangers. From an OG headbanger to two new inductees..... WELCOME!
Y’all should listen to fade to black. That’s another good song from Metallica
"Oh shit" - it was at that moment they knew that metallica wasnt fucking around.
Oh man. Exactly what I thought. Your comment had me laughing. Their reactions are awesome.
