Ethan Work Agree. Even Rush can't produce this brilliance anymore. Better than anything any other guitarist has EVER done even Gilmore Rhodes Hendrix Blackmore et al.
I saw Rush live twice back in the early 1980's in Nashville, Tennessee. They are incredible performers and musicians and have an absolutely spectacular show.
I find it hard to believe you don't know RUSH. They are 3rd behind The Beatles and Rolling Stones for consecutive Gold albums, they are also in the Rock and Roll hall of fame and their drummer since 1974 Neil Peart is considered top 3 drummers in rock history. I would devote a month the RUSH. Their run from 1976 to 1986, 8 albums are in my humble opinion the best 8 album stretch of any band that's ever walked the earth, THIS IS NOT SOME FLASH IN THE PAN 70's BAND !!! So start with 2112 and then go from there, A Farewell to Kings, Hemispheres (maybe the greatest album ever made), Permanent Waves, Moving Pictures (Their most commercial succesful album and true masterpiece), Signals, Grace Under Pressure (One of the greatest spacious guitar albums ever) and Power Windows. But make no mistake their final album CLOCKWORK ANGELS in 2015 with all 3 Geddy, Alex and Neil in their 60's is still better than most bands best album. I'd like to hear from you in 2018 after you've spent the proper time listening to RUSH. By the way I did really enjoy seeing your joy watching them for the first time but ya they aren't some fringe 70's band, they're legends.
Dude, you rock! You took every work out of my mouth! I love those years of RUSH! Every time that I listened to a new song of theirs, I fell in love all over again! Expanded my world of music like No Other!
I'm (almost) ashamed to say that at 51 years old I knew *nothing* about Rush. Then I read Ready Player One and was intrigued by the references to the guitar hidden behind the secret waterfall. I searched for 2112 and couldn't believe I'd been missing out on this stuff. This from a guy who's first (of many) tattoos was Iron Maiden's Eddie - The Trooper, so I thought I knew all about 'proper' music :)
And when I found out 2112 was referenced in Ready Player 1, I was intrigued about the book :D Rush has been one of those bands the one or two individuals in a popular band have fallen in love with, but rarely mention in front of the camera - Nirvana, Metallica, Iron Maiden, Primus, and even Hootie and the Blowfish! Just about all of their success comes from word-of-mouth since you almost never heard them in pop culture until the 2010's or so.
Jaxon Drums, dude I couldn't have written it better myself. I have lived a lifetime trying to turn people onto Rush with very little response. We are a very exclusive race of fans... and I love it.
2112, A Farewell To Kings, Hemispheres, Permanent Waves, Moving Pictures, Signals, Grace Under Pressure. As much as I like Power Windows and especially The Big Money, to me that album marks a change towards the Rush I like less. And I love Hold Your Fire. But it's just not the Rush I love anymore.
The light on Neil shines so bright that makes it difficult to distinguish that there are three musicians on this masterpiece, Rush is made out of the combination of these three fiends.
This is the best guitar solo ever done. Period. If you think I'm wrong, just listen to the song again and focus on how perfect it is for this song...you'll get it or you wont'
Hello, For what it’s worth I am just curious if this song, LA VILLA STRANGIATOactually wanted you to know the first person that I saw doing this “ music review episodes on RUclips.
Been a Rush fanatic since 1981 when I was 13 and still to this day. We all know about Neil and Geddy but Alex is so underrated as a guitar player in my option. It's been a pleaser growing up with their music.
I really appreciate your feedback on this classic - I have loved them for over 40 years and seeing them in concert I think 26 times I really love to see people when they are discovering what I have known for most of my life. Cheers
Oh That Rickenbacker Sound......I was hooked all those years ago when I first heard Geddy sing ...."Yeah...OOOOOOOHHHHH YEAH".......from the first Album.....Never looked back after that...Been my #1 Band since.
Live they are insanely skilled. Like you said amazing musicianship. Heres my entire RUSH playlist : 2112 , A passage to Bangkok , Something for nothing , Closer to the heart , Cut to the chase , The Seeker , Fly by night , Distant early warning , Tom Sawyer , Red Barchetta , YYZ , Limelight , Spirit of radio , Freewill , Working man , Roll the bones , Dreamline , Subdivisions , Far Cry , Test for echo , Half the world , The color of right , Between Sun & Moon , Need some love , Crossroads ,Time Stand Still , The Camera Eye , Lessons , Xanadu , Summertime blues , Entre nous , La villa strangiato , Kid Gloves.
Glad you liked this. I saw them live just a couple of years ago and they haven't lost a step. Interesting fact..they were friends when kids and still together! Considered the best technicians in rock for a long time. Do some more Rush!
as a Rush fan since 1976 it warms my heart to watch you listen to this for the first time. May Rush live on in moments like this for centuries to come... dare I say even beyond 2112. yuk yuk
It amazes me when someone says they have not heard these masterpieces, and I guess the beauty in this is reliving the moments when I first experienced these songs vicariously through the minds and hearts of others. To say Rush are masters of song writing would be an understatement.
I like every rendition of it. On the tour that produced RUSH in Rio, Alex interrupted La Villa with an off the cuff rant. I saw them twice live, plus the Rio version and all were epic.
Because only Rush are good enough to actually make such a complicated song sound so well live, without any external help. Watch Geddy's hands move from bass to keyboards while his feet pick up where the hands left off. Watch Alex change his guitar sound right in the middle of the most complex musical sequences. Watch Neil's perfectly timed syncopated drums, with fills that few drummers would ever attempt performing on stage. So while I agree that the studio version is fantastic, the live version leaves you breathless and in awe, every single time. And I've seen them live a number of times, from 1980 right up to the 2000's.
KingXanadu ... Awesome... is it a song? Is it a science lesson? Is it a childrens story? Natural Science is like The Trees, or 2112.. timeless, and draws you away to another time and place.
For me, this guitar solo is on the same level, as Comfortably numb and Stairway to Heaven solos. Masterpiece. Are you plannig to do Buckethead day Ruben? It would be great.
The dynamics of that song are pretty unmatched, even for Rush. They really outdid themselves when they wrote that and I don't think they ever wrote anything that complicated again. And they were playing that live too!
Fun to watch you hear brilliance for the first time! I personally have had the pleasure of seeing this song live on many occasion as I was able to make it to 53 of their shows since my first one in 1978,including their very last two shows at Irvine Meadows and the Forum. I highly suggest listening to the whole catalog.... You won't regret it!
A band on my top 5 all time list. They have so many great songs from many decades. Maybe check out a classic like 2112, Freewill, YYZ, Tom Sawyer or Subdivisions
It never fails to amaze me how well Rush is able to deconstruct and break down it's own structure yet maintain that structure, and at the correct moment, just jump back into it like they never stopped playing it. Rush is too genius for me to understand it. The amazement I feel is not fully reproducible by any other.
A signature piece by them, and they created that all on their own. Really puts things into perspective! Their musicianship was only one aspect of it, and that by itself it amazing. There really is no one like them and that in our existence is a great thing.
Dude, I couldn't take my eyes off your face. Your expressions of happiness were genuine and so fun to watch. Your smiles made me smile. This video made me happy today, and for this, I thank you.
I first saw Rush in 1986 and I continued to try and go see them live every chance that I could...which led me to Toronto, Ontario (their home town - sort of) on 3 occasions and only missed 3 tours since. I was fortunate enough to see their final tour "R40" for their 40 year anniversary run. The show that I saw in Chicago on that tour was absolutely amazing. It's never too late! Welcome to the club. The more you listen, the more you appreciate. Watch some of their interviews on RUclips, you'll be amazed how down to earth these guys are.
Such a pleasure to see your pleasure as you find a band who are very arguably the greatest three-piece rock act there has ever been. Their compositions are complex, with mix-matching, cross-fading, time signatures between the bass and guitar and Geddy and Alex make the very hard seem, not easy, but effortless. And as for Neil ... well ... I am a guitar player so I am no judge but I think he is one of the most underrated, creative, beater of skins there is.
I'd recommend listening to 'Working Man' live (time machine tour) by Rush. Also you should REALLY listen to 'Prison Skin' by Persefone (music video). Also 'The City In The Sea' live by The Ocean.
I totally love how you try to close your eyes & take it in only to find yourself having to open up your eyes in order to see how in the Hell are they doing that! Priceless looks! Rush is total "Eye & Ear Candy!!!" Rock on!!!
Rush has the most skilled rock drummer alive in Neil Peart, the best rock bassist alive (Geddy Lee), and Alex Lifeson whose licks can wake up the dead, PLUS they are Canadian. That's a hole in one if you ask me. Listen to 2112 for more, another masterpiece, or Cygnus X-1 + Hemispheres.
Never to late to start. So many good tunes, Rush, Fly by Night, Caress of steel, 2112, Farewell to Kings, Hemispheres, Permanent Waves, Moving pictures, Signals, Grace under pressure, etc.........
I saw them on the hemispheres tour in the UK in 79 my first gig at the tender age of 11.In the space of 6 month i saw Zeppelin at knebworth, Priest, Motorhead, BOC, early Maiden and The Jam .What a year
If you do a Rush day, please!!! I’ll geek out with you to God’s music! You’ll be blown away at the evolution of the band, and how it has all come back in many ways to square one. Clockwork Angels is their last album, and their best in 30+ years. Best songs to do (IMO) ... wow. In no particular order: By-Tor and the Snow Dog 2112 Xanadu The Spirit Of Radio Natural Science YYZ Limelight Subdivisions Distant Early Warning The Big Money Marathon Roll The Bones Stick It Out Anything off of Clockwork Angels (they used a string section live on their last tour, it was incredible). That’s a good start.
The footage is from a Canadian broadcast special that only aired once called Rock Times 3. The show featured 3 of Canada's top rock acts at the time. Ian Thomas band, The Stampeders and Rush. From what I remember Rush played this song, Closer to the Heart and Xanadu and one other I can't recall.
YYZ live from the "Rush In Rio"....Ruben, YOU WILL NOT BE DISAPPOINTED!! I promise....just do it. It's a guarantee ( but it HAS to be that one specifically)
If this is the first time listening to Rush ,you have some of the best music to discover i wish i was you kind of. But i grew up in Canada and it is part of my life experiences music linked to memories. Best band of all time in my view.
The look on his face. Ladies and gentleman, another Rush fan is born.
Yay.
Hes sucked into the vortex, the black hole of Rush ware even light cant escape its power.
@@robschannel4512 The Cygnus black hole
Wait. A guy with a Gojira t-shirt that never heard La Villa Strangiato?
mine was much worse
The greatest instrumental song of all time in my opinion. For more of Rush, check out Xanadu.
I second this motion. This song is soo good.
Definitely my favourite Rush song.
Ethan Work Agree. Even Rush can't produce this brilliance anymore. Better than anything any other guitarist has EVER done even Gilmore Rhodes Hendrix Blackmore et al.
Xanadu on Exit: Stage Left, the segues between Broon's Bane to The Trees to Xanadu is just magical.
Try The Dixie Dregs. 99.9% instrumentals with the greatest all-around guitarist!
I saw Rush live twice back in the early 1980's in Nashville, Tennessee. They are incredible performers and musicians and have an absolutely spectacular show.
absolute fucking masters of their instruments
No one can tell a story with the guitar like Alex!
Rush!!!! The best band of the world!!! Forever!!!!
maybe for you.
I love it

My absolute favorite band. Geddy is the reason I play bass
TwinRavens Vital Signs is so awesome to play and for practice.
He is a master of that bass
TwinRavens Geddy Lee e Chris Squire
TwinRavens Do you play a Rick, or a Jazz Bass?
Same
Alex Lifeson...what an inspiring guitarist
Beau Cardwell underappreciated player
TwinRavens without a doubt! A large part of how even John Petrucci developed his technique.
The light on Neil shines so bright that makes it difficult to distinguish that there are three musicians on this masterpiece, Rush is made out of the combination of these three fiends.

The studio version is a lot tighter and more balanced. I know people aren't fans of it, but you can hear the finer details much better.
The studio version was recorded live. I read somewhere on like the 40th take.
Johann Wilder I agree! I’m not sure why he listened to a live version of it!? I agree the studio version is a lot tighter! Better balance for sure! 👌🏽
I like every rendition of it. On the tour that produced RUSH in Rio, Alex interrupted La Villa with an off the cuff rant. I saw them twice live, plus the Rio version and all were epic.

That was great Ruben! Such a great, timeless band, and a joy to watch you react! RUSH is beyond amazing, yes!

For me, this guitar solo is on the same level, as Comfortably numb and Stairway to Heaven solos. Masterpiece.
Are you plannig to do Buckethead day Ruben? It would be great.
Lightyears better than stairway. Slightly better than Comfortably Numb. Never was a huge Zep fan.
The greatest solo ever. Period.
The dynamics of that song are pretty unmatched, even for Rush. They really outdid themselves when they wrote that and I don't think they ever wrote anything that complicated again. And they were playing that live too!
yea they said they after this album they wanted to write less complicated songs
It took them longer to record La Villa than it did the entirety of the album Fly By Night.
Check out YYZ from Moving Pictures.
Love Hemispheres!
Listen to Tom Sawyer. The drums. Now THAT'S complicated!
Watch "YYZ - Rush (Rush in Rio)" too! :)
THIS!
No words need be said. Your facial expressions tell it all. You showed what I was hoping you'd feel. Glad you experienced this!

Rush is like listening to three different conversations all at once, at yet STILL making TOTAL sense. The near impossible achieved.
Dude, I couldn't take my eyes off your face. Your expressions of happiness were genuine and so fun to watch. Your smiles made me smile. This video made me happy today, and for this, I thank you.
Fantastic song and incredible playing by Alex Lifeson ! The textures and feel are awesome.
I love this dudes expression at 8.19 when Geddy solo riff launches.
I bet that was our reaction when we first heard this song too haha
I first saw Rush in 1986 and I continued to try and go see them live every chance that I could...which led me to Toronto, Ontario (their home town - sort of) on 3 occasions and only missed 3 tours since. I was fortunate enough to see their final tour "R40" for their 40 year anniversary run. The show that I saw in Chicago on that tour was absolutely amazing. I am glad to see a man in a Gojira shirt has become a fan of Ruah. I thank my older brothers for turning me on to the holy triumverate!!!
Glad you finally got to hear them! Never too late!
His moment of wakening caught on video...lol
Hey you all are “Losing It.”
It just can’t get any better...Thanks Rush for your undisputed talent🙏🙏🙏
It's never too late! Welcome to the club. The more you listen, the more you appreciate. Watch some of their interviews on RUclips, you'll be amazed how down to earth these guys are.
That was pretty much my reaction when I first heard that piece. It blew me away and it's one of my favourite Rush tracks.
Good to see you are a fan of Rush, my man! They were the first major act I ever saw in concert , back in 1982...
A modern master piece that mixs chops and soul while still maintaining integrity as a composition.
What can I say, it's Rush
cerebral music and very well composed. xanadu is another master piece
the most hauntingly beautiful progressive rock guitar composition ever created! I can listen to it over and over its heavenly work
This guitar solo gets me every time!! Pure emotion - one of the best.
Makes me happy as well. Never gets old!
Saw them live twice. Amazing. Ruben, if you want to do another one by Rush, consider doing YYZ. :)
Rush- The Spirit of Radio!! An absolute masterpiece
The most soul searching/ exposing solo I have ever heard..... LOVE this track always have
Such a pleasure to see your pleasure as you find a band who are very arguably the greatest three-piece rock act there has ever been.
Have never seen the in concert version before. Incredible!!
Hemispheres is a great album and definitely one of my favorites.
You were absolutely correct when you said this had “great magicianship” - this performance is pure magic
I'd recommend listening to 'Working Man' live (time machine tour) by Rush. Also you should REALLY listen to 'Prison Skin' by Persefone (music video). Also 'The City In The Sea' live by The Ocean.
Love how geddy plays the bass and the synthesizer with his foot, they always do Canada proud!!
One of my favorites!! Thank you! That first guitar solo is a lesson in dynamics!
Exit stage left version is next level better.
Lifeson's speed picking was awesome in that one.
Yeah....one my very favorite albums. My son's been a rush fan since age 8
Went to that tour stop in Tucson, Az. Great show.
Great seeing your reaction since you never saw Rush before. I've been a fan since the 70's. Great review and reaction. Thanks
