I'm proud to say I was there for Rush in Rio, recorded in 2002 :) I was 17 years old back then and YYZ live was completely mental, we were having the time of our lives for sure, seeing Rush in Brazil for the first time ever.
Isn't that incredible? It never gets old. Not only Brazil was into it, they learn very fast. They waited so long to see them, and their patience paid off.
We did the same thing when we saw them in 79. Humming to YYZ. GOING CRAZY. Reo people Rock. Seen you guy's with ACDC. So happy you got to see these guys. Pure talent, RUSH
Rush was never received ANYWHERE on earth like they were in Rio...The people knew the words and drum parts...The live in Rio DVD's are a prize in my collection...I was SHOCKED at how much they loved them!
This is why Rush has been my favorite Rock band for decades now. They have officially retired, but their music is nearly timeless in my opinion. They are one of the most musically proficient bands overall, well-disciplined, professional, and personally mature. It's part of their chemistry and certainly foundational to their long-lived success.
I'm Brazilian living in Canada, this video means a lot to me. This is what we are, not what our politicians do. We are these guys. Best YYZ reaction that I saw on YT.
It was their first time touring there as well. I feel bad for their Japanese fans. They played there in 1984 and never returned. And i don't think they ever played Australia.
Their first trip to South America, 3 shows 250k fans first ever Rush concert. Alex Lifeson - guitar, Neil Peart - drums, Geddy Lee - bass, keyboards, all vocals, footpedals - all at once!!! The crowd is singing along!!! Rush is rock/jazz/fusion and are legendary musicians with 40+ albums. Neil is a multple-awarded best drummer on the planet. Several of his solos on youtube.
The question is not “Where was this band my whole life?”… The question is: “Where were you?” ;) Glad to see you are on board with the movement & that you were baptized in Rio. Stay classy amigo. jt
Welcome to the world of Rush! Unfortunately, they have (unofficially) retired and won't be recording or touring anymore. The good news is that there are several live albums in addition to their 40 year studio album catalog!
Good to hear you liked it. YYZ is my favorite Rush song. These guys basically laid the foundation for prog metal. Never changed lineup (not considering the first year withouth Neil). Huge influence to many bands we know today (Deam Theater, Haken, etc.). Never once split or took a break. It's almost inhuman.
Thank you for playing this, and congratulations on learning of a new band. Rush was the first band I ever saw in concert, and over the years, I saw them in concert more than any other band. Though the Rush is done, their music lives on, and thankfully, they've got a lot of really terrific live concert videos. You're right about their chemistry, and they're among the best rock musicians today. I don't know if you noticed it, but there were washing machines and dryers behind the bass player. Since he plugs his bass directly into the PA, it looked silly with Alex having huge stacks of amps, then Neil's huge drum kit, then behind Geddy... nothing. So he got creative. On this tour, he had washers and dryers. On another he had vending machines. On another, he was cooking rotisserie chickens for the band and crew's after concert dinner! Rush was an amazing band with a terrific sense of humor. Check out Alex's speech at Rush's induction to the RR Hall of Fame!
So glad to see you enjoying my all time favourite Band, now if you’re up for it their Magnum Opus you must experience is “2112” the complete song ,it’s long but you will love it......peace brother
You made the comment in another Rush video about being on top of their game, remember this is the same line up since 1974. The song YYZ is 38 years old and the members are now in their mid 60's. Yea, I think they make in music. You can tell they really love what they are doing. I hope I'm that active when I'm 65.
THANK YOU RUBEN FOR THIS CHANNEL! I'm a late one to your channel but i've been watching a lot from the start and you've got me into RUSH! I CAN NOT THANK YOU ENOUGH!
I HAVE introduced Rush to people with this song! I wait for the moment the crowd starts singing along to the melody and go "...Listen." Hits them like a ton of bricks every time.
You really need to do Jacobs Ladder!!! This one has so many time and tempo changes in it but flows together seamlessly. The live version on RUclips is from their 40th anniversary tour and is amazing, however, the best live version of this song is on Exit Stage Left and has no video. These guys are true masters of their instruments and have given me decades of music to marvel over. I hope that you to can embrace the magic that is RUSH.
Rush may not have been the first prog band, but, what they did, was to take prog, and open it up, make it more accessible, without dumbing it down. They took it from being the exclusive domain of elitists, and, music nerds, and, made it available to a wider audience. Every band that incorporates progressive elements in their music, like, say, Jinjer, (I know you dig them), owes A LOT to Rush, directly, or, indirectly.
Wow, very intelligent piece of Music writing. I heard of Rush, but never took the time to listen. That's changed now. I suggest another technical piece of Music. Allegaeon, Grey matter mechanics. It will surprize you.
I simply love watching you give Rush a look & a listen. This was a great choice & I could see that you were on the edge of your seat for all of it! A new Rush song for you every week! We will be your D.J. if you let us? Xanadu & of course 2112 are a must. Any song off of Rush in Rio is awesome because of the amazing crowd. Listening to a live show to me in the Snakes & Arrows DVD features some of Geddy's best vocals for a live setting.. Enjoy your next Rush venture & we'll all be along for the ride! :0)= I'm so happy that you've found Rush, but sad that you'll never see them live any longer as they have retired following their last show 2+ years ago. Posting to Rush USA Fans FB page! Rock on Ruben! Bill
Ruben, I'm glad you've discovered RUSH! They are my favorite band for 40 years now, I got my first Rush album (2112) 40 years ago almost to the day. I love to see a new fan appreciating them as much as you do. Watch the bonus video disc of "Beyond the Lighted Stage," there's a live version of "Entre Nous," one of my favorite Rush songs. It's a very cool video with Alex swapping guitars and Geddy swapping keyboards and bass all through the song, a very impressive performance! One of my favorite Rush deep cuts is "Available Light." Listen to that song Ruben, it's a gem! And for something completely different, check out Queensryche: Operation Live Crime. That is a really epic live performance.
I burst out laughing when you said these guys have one hell of a promising career to look forward to haha. I hope you are a rush fan by now. Love the rush reactions vids :)
Rush is from Toronto Canada. YYZ is the transmitter code for Toronto's Lester B. Pearson International Airport. The intro rhythm you hear beginning on the triangle and snare/kick is the morse code for YYZ
For the next Rush song, "Leave That Thing Alone" is another amazing instrumental, with an amazing bass line. (And solo if you react to the 2011 Time Machine version.) If you do not want an instrumental again, 2112 is another amazing piece, the whole 20 minutes.
Hey there Ruben, you might like to watch "The Making of YYZ" It truly shows how much these 3 guys are masters of their instruments. Thanks so much for doing this reaction. I caught you smiling almost the whole time!
Lots of bands have one virtuoso musician that defines them; Eddie Van Halen, Billy Sheehan,Les Claypool in Primus, Dime Bag in Pantera, ... Rush all 3 are some of the best in their instrument. I mean, what bassist doesnt mention Geddy, or drummer mention Peart when speaking of influence. Only other band i can think of with group power is Led Zeppelin. A truly awesome band.
After giving it some thought, since you have seen how awesome they are on their instruments, I'm thinking that maybe you should watch & listen to 2112 & then Xanadu via their studio LP w/lyrics maybe? These 2 songs are so good & I want you to be able to take in all of the song along with the studio sounds of their instruments. There's no full video version of 2112. That's another reason why you really need to check out the full studio versions first. You can always go back & review them from a live version afterwards. A true Rush Fan would want you to hear the studio version first. :0)=
Interesting fact. The staccato intro is actually YYZ in morse code, which is also the IATA identification code for Toronto Pearson Airport. Rush hail from Toronto. Apologies if anyone has already pointed this out on the comments. Glad you are enjoying your Rush journey. Do Red Sector A or Marathon some time. Studio or Live (from Show of Hands LP). Well worth the effort.
In the last reaction you asked if the same 3 have always been together. They had a different drummer on their first album, but he had some health issues and they picked up Neil Peart before their first large tour. He's been with them ever since, so it's been the same 3 for like 97% of Rush. On this show, the band had a large fanbase in Brazil they didn't even know about. They did a few stops there on that tour, and it was the first time in 30 years the band had ever been there. As you can see, the fans were VERY enthusiastic about them finally coming.
Ruben! It is so enjoyable watching you lose your Rush cherry - better late than never! I'm a long time fan and have taken all three of my teenage sons to see them live more than once. Seen them a total of five times in all. You MUST continue your deep dive with them, but next into the caverns of Xanadu. You're welcome! PapaBear
Yes! Thank you for this and thank you for the acknowledgement too. Rock on. If you wish to continue your introduction to rush, check out the songs: Tom sawyer, 2112, spirit of radio, something for nothing
Hey man great reaction as usual. You've got to check out Revocation!! Can't believe you haven't done any of their songs yet. Do The Grip Tightens or Teratogenesis. Keep it up bro
YYZ is the airport code for Toronto Pearson international airport. The piece is about what you see feel and hear at that airport, or any major airport for that matter. Rush is from Toronto, so this is often a major focus for them. ❤️🥃🧐🎼🇨🇦
Their biggest selling album was "Moving Pictures" (Yyz was on that) Three other note worthy songs are Tom Sawyer, Limelight, Red Barchetta (for the great story and music combination) Saw Rush in 1977, and never missed a tour. You have a lot of catching up to do, but that's a great adventure ahead. Thanks!
YYZ is the airport code for their hometown on Toronto. And also... that intro from cymbals and then guitar ? That's Morse code for YYZ. Neil heard it on a plane once, "And I couldn't get it out of my head."
This whole concert is like that and it's more than 2 hours and a half, no other band could ever sustain what this trio gives to their fans. Almost all their music is as intricate and as difficult to play.
The first time I saw Rush is when they opened for Max Webster. The next time, Max opened for them, then it was just on to bigger and bigger shows. John Rutsy was the drummer then.
They did another instrumental piece on a later album that was called Limbo that I enjoyed listening to, and thought nothing of it. Then I saw them in concert and noticed some buttons for sale that said "Rush Limbo". Quite a dry sense of humor.
Only the Brazilian fans could create lyrics for YYZ!
Classic...
Well done to the Brazilian fans and the poster of this video!
Love it!!
I was one of those, in São Paulo, Morumbi stadium
É nois que voa bruxao
I'm proud to say I was there for Rush in Rio, recorded in 2002 :) I was 17 years old back then and YYZ live was completely mental, we were having the time of our lives for sure, seeing Rush in Brazil for the first time ever.
Replying to you from Canada. The crowd was as epic as the band. Love the Brazilian flavour you added.
Best crowd I have ever seen. Absolutely crazy!! Love it.
the concert you were at is considered one of the best concert video's ever shot
Yeah. You guys made us PROUD. True rockers. Seen them in 79. In their prime.
I is jealous 😕
The only crowd to ever sing along to an instrumental! 😂👍
😂🤣 Right on Bro 👍
It's a shame that there's no document to support my claim, but, a month prior to Rio, we did it with "Leave that thing alone" at Mexico City.
Isn't that incredible? It never gets old. Not only Brazil was into it, they learn very fast. They waited so long to see them, and their patience paid off.
@William Wells Brazilians speak Portuguese, not Spanish.
They sang in portguese so i could not understand. Here in Canada most people sit in awe most times.
We did the same thing when we saw them in 79. Humming to YYZ. GOING CRAZY. Reo people Rock. Seen you guy's with ACDC. So happy you got to see these guys. Pure talent, RUSH
I was there ... and I helped sing an instrumental song. Unforgettable!
That crowd was lit!
epic, I've seen Rush live about a half of dozen times, but never with a crowd this lively. I feel like I was at a Kenny G concert compared to this
Inveja de vc, mano...🙁
Tbm ,mano foi foda
Wow. Good for you to have seen such the show. Seen them 13 times over 40 years. What a gift to have lived through all of RUSH
Rush was never received ANYWHERE on earth like they were in Rio...The people knew the words and drum parts...The live in Rio DVD's are a prize in my collection...I was SHOCKED at how much they loved them!
Impossible to watch without missing the greatest drummer ever. I'm crying.
Por isso Régis Tadeu escreveu na revista Cover Guitarra:
"Quer saber? Por 3 horas aquele gigantesco estádio se tornou o lugar mais feliz do planeta!"
Man that crowd! They actually hummed throughout the entire song and it's an instrumental! Best band deserving of the best crowd!
My favorite concert ever. The crowd was on fire. This concert never gets boring just love the energy from the crowd 👍
I Love your reactions Ruben,, ! watched this like 5 times,,,Bravo
The first time I saw this dvd, this particular part of the concert put the biggest smile on my face. These fans are fantastic
I'm Brazilian living in Canada, this video means a lot to me. This is what we are, not what our politicians do. We are these guys. Best YYZ reaction that I saw on YT.
South America has the best crowds! Awesome version of this song but the older live one where Neil Peart plays the BEST DRUM SOLO EVER is a must!
B Well Brazil in particular has a HUGE Rush fanbase, that's why they were so euphoric.
Maiden and Dream Theater draw huge crowds too ... amazing!
It was their first time touring there as well. I feel bad for their Japanese fans. They played there in 1984 and never returned. And i don't think they ever played Australia.
Futbol crowds!
B Well ziltoid!
Their first trip to South America, 3 shows 250k fans first ever Rush concert. Alex Lifeson - guitar, Neil Peart - drums, Geddy Lee - bass, keyboards, all vocals, footpedals - all at once!!! Um dentre os melhores shows de todos os tempos!!!

jables3377 I'm just gutted that I never got the chance to see them live
24 times. First time was exit stage left in 78 i was 6
Damn Geddy Lee is such a kick ass bass player. Just so groovy
Nathan Pickering He is the best of the best
YYZ is the airport code for the Toronto airport, and the opening rhythm is Morse Code for YYZ
Yup! The band is from Toronto!
Gill Rowley Leave it to Neil Peart to make a bitchin' tune out of the morse code identifier for an airport
Dont Alex and Geddy write the music normally? I thought Neil was the lyricist.
mdmyer Doesn't mean that Neil can't also propose a melody for them to use.
I heard somewhere that YYZ started as a jam between Neil and Geddy. The guitar part came later.
Music is timeless there is never a wrong time to get into a band have fun discovering RUSH :)
I discovered RUSH in 1981... and the joy of listening to their past music was a joy for me... You have 40+ years of joy to discover... enjoy Ruben!
Eu tava la!! I was there! Rush pra sempre!
And the crowd knows ALL the lyrics !!!
I've seen Rush 11 times live, and own all of their albums and live blu-rays. They are my favorite band to introduce to new friends and musicians.
Thank you for playing this, and congratulations on learning of a new band. Rush was the first band I ever saw in concert, and over the years, I saw them in concert more than any other band. Well said
Orgulho dos brasileiros que representaram nesse show, isso é um público de vdd!
It’s a fuckin joy visiting this channel. The enthusiasm behind your reviews is contagious.
👍
Love your reaction. My jaw dropped back in the early 1980s when I first heard this. The bass, drums, and guitar are so good.
it's kind of a joy to see your growing smile when you first realize how good the song is, and as you listen to it. thanks for sharing!
It was fun watching you get into them. Rush. 41 yrs... Masters
I love the smile on your face. Just like me and my friends back innthe early 80s. First LP I heard was Hemispheres. Only three in the band... no way!!
They make it look so easy. You can see and feel they love playing. 💖
Such a treat to see someone enjoying Rush for the first time
So glad to see you enjoying my all time favourite Band, now if you’re up for it their Magnum Opus you must experience is “2112” the complete song ,it’s long but you will love it......peace brother
You made the comment in another Rush video about being on top of their game, remember this is the same line up since 1974. The song YYZ is 38 years old and the members are now in their mid 60's. Yea, I think they make in music. You can tell they really love what they are doing. I hope I'm that active when I'm 65.
*RUSH RULES!* Also see Exit Stage Left album, YYZ song, for a Neil Peart drum solo that is off the charts!
I was there. Amazing
THANK YOU RUBEN FOR THIS CHANNEL! I'm a late one to your channel but i've been watching a lot from the start and you've got me into RUSH! I CAN NOT THANK YOU ENOUGH!
That is what this channel is for, my friend!
You need to listen to Rush 2112 any version you can find you'll understand why we in Canada love this band as much as we do
I seen RUSH..10 times..back in 1980s i was 15yrs old...mtv just came out...old shcool here..LMAO..RUSH...😂🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🌈🌀🐊💝😎💯ROCK
Have been a Rush fan for decades and LOVE to see your reactions to "just discovering them".
These guys have one hell of a promising career to look forward to! Lol. That made me spit my beer out! Yeah, they just might make it 😍
Wow, you're a brave man! Leaving some irony and wit in a RUclips Comment section with nothing but a tiny 'lol' to protect yourself? Bravo, sir! :-)
******RUSH****** Lives forever...
If you to introduce someone to Rush, show them this song.
Also Malignant Narcissism makes the same effect
I HAVE introduced Rush to people with this song! I wait for the moment the crowd starts singing along to the melody and go "...Listen." Hits them like a ton of bricks every time.
Oh agreed, when I hear the crowd singing along, I end up grinning like an idiot, magical.
Rush, Canada's gift to the world.
I'm so happy that you've found Rush, but sad that you'll never see them live any longer as they have retired following their last show 2+ years ago.
Posting to Rush USA Fans FB page! Rock on Ruben! Bill

No. Here in Ontario Canada, We call Z Zed, So it's said as YY ZED... A Other outstanding band from Ontario Canada is "Motion Device"
And to add... I've played drums in a Rush covers band (some time ago) - talk about hard work!!!
its ok to be blown away i heard this when i was twelve yrs old and was blown away at such a young age
Rush is from Toronto Canada. YYZ is the transmitter code for Toronto's Lester B. Pearson International Airport. The intro rhythm you hear beginning on the triangle and snare/kick is the morse code for YYZ
The Rush in Rio DVD is one of my most watched movies lol. For a while I watched it every night before going to sleep :)
Great stuff! Love your perspective. Well spoken. yes u called them sublime. Perfect. Ima use that! Ha!
You're lucky, I wish I could discover Rush again for the first time!
You know there is true Rush fans in the audience, when they are singing along to an instrumental song!
For the next Rush song, "Leave That Thing Alone" is another amazing instrumental, with an amazing bass line. (And solo if you react to the 2011 Time Machine version.) If you do not want an instrumental again, 2112 is another amazing piece, the whole 20 minutes.
Thanks my friend for following through on the suggestion. Knew you would love it. More RUSH you say? Tom Sawyer or Red Barchetta!
Hey there Ruben, you might like to watch "The Making of YYZ" It truly shows how much these 3 guys are masters of their instruments. Thanks so much for doing this reaction. I caught you smiling almost the whole time!

this was the single piece of complete badassery that i have ever seen!
Xanadu has been perhaps my favorite Rush song ever. And I’ve been a fan since their first album. Give it a listen.
At least you now have discovered them, you have a lot to catch up with and enjoy.
Yes...incredible experiences ARE indeed wealth...well put!
Interesting fact. The staccato intro is actually YYZ in morse code, which is also the IATA identification code for Toronto Pearson Airport. Rush hail from Toronto. Just sounds like pure joy.
To also quote Rodney Dangerfield...
"WHAT A CROWD!!"
Ohh yes! Rush is amazing. Great video, as always!
You should react to Liquid Tension Experiment - Acid Rain Live
That three people could produce such magic.. RIP Neil
YYZ is the airport code for Toronto Pearson international airport. The piece is about what you see feel and hear at that airport, or any major airport for that matter. Rush is from Toronto, so this is often a major focus for them. ❤️🥃🧐🎼🇨🇦
Nice react! Cheers from Brazil!
40+ years...OF AMAZING!!
YYZ in itself is awesome. YYZ mashed with Brazillian football chant is unreal.

YYZ is the airport code for their hometown on Toronto.
And also... that intro from cymbals and then guitar ? That's Morse code for YYZ.
Neil heard it on a plane once, "And I couldn't get it out of my head."
TacomaPaul Toronto actually
@@gregmiller8691 Well, shoot ! Somehow I knew I'd get that wrong.
RUSH IN RIO, is frickin unbelievable
I love the Live in Rio version for its energy! I just wish it had a drum solo, like other live versions!
you have to listen to the studio recording in order to fully appreciate what the crowd in Rio did. Amazing!
from 13 years old they follow my life until now
Thought you'de like it!!👌👌 Thanks for your reaction !!
I was there Maracanã 2003. Amazing incredible. Brazilian people is fire
If I was a rock star I would insist on playing in Rio every year! Best crowds in the world!
Hey buddy I'm glad you like the song So how many audiences have you heard sing to a song that has no words
This whole concert is like that and it's more than 2 hours and a half, no other band could ever sustain what this trio gives to their fans. Almost all their music is as intricate and as difficult to play.
Queen had the same audience reaction in Rio
Love your reactions, you have to see Rush-Spirit of Radio sarstock in Toronto, played in front of half million
The first time I saw Rush is when they opened for Max Webster. The next time, Max opened for them, then it was just on to bigger and bigger shows. John Rutsy was the drummer then.
Love your show
Than you very much!
Ruben Buijs your most welcome my friend. Enjoy the day.
🎼🎶😎🎶🎼
They did another instrumental piece on a later album that was called Limbo that I enjoyed listening to, and thought nothing of it. Then I saw them in concert and noticed some buttons for sale that said "Rush Limbo". Quite a dry sense of humor.
Test For Echo.
Great choice! Saw them a couple pf years ago and they haven't lost a step!
