Rush aren't a band given to empty gestures or gratuitous pronouncements. So when Geddy Lee thanks a crowd in Cleveland and calls them "the best crowd ever", they're not lying. Toronto might have the most adoring Rush crowds, but it was Cleveland that broke Rush back in 1974, when the local rock radio station put this one song in heavy rotation when no other radio station in the States would. "Working Man" is a song made for a (then) blue collar town like Cleveland, and the people there identified with that song immediately, and the rest of the country followed. So, again, when Lee calls a Cleveland crowd "the best", it is meant as a genuine "thank you".

Years ago - when I lived in Los Angeles (I'm not American) there was a radio station that had an hour called "the Rush hour" - every day. It made fun of L.A. traffic AND played an hour's worth of Rush. Best hour of my day for 9 months. These guys are truly out of this world. Keep making these reaction videos - love them. Ruben, Ive been a Rush fan for 40 years, and have seen them live 7 times. They are always fantastic, and Geddy ( bassist/singer)is the reason I play bass.Neal Peart, beside being a once in a generation drummer, writes all the song lyrics as well. Rush has always been 3 members....listen to and read the lyrics to "Freewill ", and you'll know how I live my life. Wouldn't have made it through my teens without them.
By the way ,Alex Lifeson (guitarist)plays the guitar solo on Porcupine Tree's "Anesthetize"

I've always liked the song Limelight - it tells about life on the concert tour. "I can't pretend a stranger is a long awaited friend". We all want to be best friends with the bands when we meet them, but so do thousands of other people, and they forget us 5 minutes after we get their autographs.

I'm glad to see another share in the same kind of joy I've had with this band. Growing up in Canada in the 90's Rush was played all the time on the 'classic rock' and contemporary stations, but they weren't grunge, numetal, punk or pop, so they were basically off my radar. Then in an odd turn of events two years ago, the points card Air Miles was going to expire all credits older than 5 years so I cashed out and used them to buy a Rush Clockwork Angels album, since I've know of them growing up but never actually sat down and listened to them.
When I put that CD in, full of music I've never heard before, much like Ruben I too was blown away at the playing ability, timing changes, and story telling. This band is a symphony of 3! I then dug into their extensive back catalogue, and every single album, over and over again, I had that, "Hey! I know that song!" experience. Only then did I realize how big a part of my life, musically, they actually are. It was very eye-opening.

If you're going to explore Rush, then you MUST listen to the studio version of the first side of 2112. It's their breakaway album that went gold, put them on the map, and established them. That whole first side is a collection of seven "songs" that tell a story, and it's brilliant. All the pieces tie together and flow. They were seriously afraid that they were going to fail due to declining commercial sales, and they thought this would be their last album, so they put everything they had into what they thought would be their final work. It's ambitious and wild and driven. I recommend listening to the studio version because then you'll hear it like everyone else heard it in the 70s. It's a true classic in the history of Rock.

A brief history between Rush and the city of Cleveland. Working Man is from Rush's first album. They had no radio support in the U.S. until a radio DJ in Cleveland heard it. He loved it for two reasons. First, because the song absolutely rocks. Secondly, because it's ten minutes long. DJs liked these songs because they used them to go to the restroom (washroom in Canada). Ttue story.

Shongo 2k The Stations(WMMS) Female General Manager, Donna Halper was delivered a copy of "RUSH" an independently made album from an unknown Canadian Band. Instead of adding it to the list of trash, she put it on. When Working Man grabbed her, She TOLD the DJ's to spin it, and keep on spining it. Then she asked RUSH to be one of the bands on WMMS's Coffee Break Concert Series at the Agora Ballroom which they were on December 16th, 1974. Enough to say without Ms. Halper, Rush would of remained a Local Ontario Travelling Band, as they didn't have enough money to put out another independent album, and were getting few gigs in Ontario at the time, no press, nothing, playing before 10's or 100's only, let alone anything from South of the Border. This was just before Neil appeared on the scene, and may have not come on board without WMMS, so the thank you is well deserved. Basically no Cleveland, no RUSH.

  • @rtpchoruslead
    @rtpchoruslead 6 лет назад

Ruben, you're absolutely right about how tightly knit Rush was as a band. After Neil Peart (drummer) lost both his wife and daughter to separate tragedies in just a 10-month period, they automatically, without even a second thought, just stopped writing and touring and being a band. They never considered ever replacing Neil, even temporarily. I mean, considering their musicianship, there's really no way any of them could even be temporarily replaced. So they took a few years to let Neil absorb his loss until he finally came to them and let them know he was ready to write and tour again. Since Neil writes all the lyrics for the band, he is a very well-spoken and well-rounded individual. He is also an accomplished author and has written several books; one which addresses his personal sorrows and his road to recovery. www.google.com/search?q=neil%20peart%20books%20in%20order&ved=0ahUKEwjFnLrQkZLcAhVnUN8KHQLlDzwQmoICCGcoAA

Everything you describe about this band is spot on. I would even suggest that all these 3 masters....and they are masters....are old spirits that travel from life to life...and do this type of thing. They have done this before in some other element in some other existence. I truly believe that. Anyway....this particular song is much more mellowed out in the studio version back in 1975....but it shows you the listener how these 3 masters can improve on something that was already perfect..if I may use that word. Very good.

I love your reaction so much that I had to watch this one & La Villa again today! You really need to do Rush once per week at a minimum! You really need to do 2112 (twenty one - twelve) next! The studio version with lyrics would probably be best seeing how there is no full live version of the entire song out there. You really need to look at the titles of all of the parts of the song & be sure you are prepared to be taken to the ultimate next Rush level. Rock on. Bill

Yes, there has always been three members. They started with a different drummer, John Rutsey, but health problems forced him to resign from the band after the first album. You can find video of him playing with the band here on YT.

Rush's most famious/popular song is Tom Sawyer from their Moving Pictures Album.. They are known for their live performances. There is a reason they were the first band to be voted in by fans to the Rock Hall of Fame

Your response is profound - love it.
I’ve been inspired by Rush since 1982- I grew up near Cleveland - a huge fan base going way back-we love them .
Age 12 - blew my mind.
    Check out 2112-
    Peace bro !

You should do Rush - Anthem. Another old school masterpiece from these guys.

Just 3 mates, hanging out, making some music.
On the 'best audience ever' comment. I know all bands say that in every city but were it not for a radio station in Cleveland giving Rush their first airplay with this song waaaaay back who knows if they would have made it? We owe Donna Halper and the Cleveland rock fans a lot! 👍

YYZ LIVE IN RIO. The crowd sings the instrumental. Starts with the Morse code for YYZ (letters for Toronto Airport, their home.)

Missed this one somehow. Need to check the original version too, just to hear how Geddy sang back then. This is off their debut album when their sound was very Zeppelin/The Who influenced. Then the professor (Neil) joined the band and they got more progressive.
