Rush doesn't just write and play songs, they take you on a musical journey. I'm a veteran of 18 Rush concerts on 16 tours. I first discovered Rush on my 15th birthday in 1977, the first time I ever listened to "2112". I was hooked immediately, and have been one of those die-hard Rush fanatics ever since! \m/ \m/
I have always thought Alex Lifeson is incredibly underrated as a guitarist. He can play pretty much anything and makes it look effortless. Maybe just the fan in me, but always thought that. Great reaction
Fucking awesome. I was on the Rush in Rio concert, unforgettable. There’s a great Rush song that doesn’t get enough love, called Nobody’s Hero. You won’t see many people requesting it, but it’s beautiful.
rjacamargo oh, if you’re after a reaction to Nobody’s Hero do a YT search for “Enoma Rush.” They have probably the most comprehensive (still growing) and in-depth list of Rush song reactions on the web. Nobody’s Hero is there. I’ve not watched that one yet because I don’t like the song. But I still might watch it at some point.
I used to fall asleep to La Villa Strangiato on my Walkman...lol My first concert was "Hemispheres" in Rochester N.Y.!! I love Kels reaction to Xanadu, and can't wait for this...Organic! and my Mom is a Canadian and family from Kingston, Toronto, Vancouver and N.B. Love you guys, eh! And Love Conquers All, for sure! ✌💜😎
Rich, so excellent you left Kel to herself during A Lerxst in Wonderland. You could see her being moved higher and higher, smiling more and more. The lady gets it. Great show, both of you.
I'd say there's a difference between experiencing this music young vs. older. Kinda like Christmas as a kid vs. now. When you listen to this now like you did as kid vs. an adult listening to it for the 1st time, not the same experience. These guys are truly genius its something you can't explain in words.
You two make me cry all the time. Being able to share music that Kel has never heard, how awesome is that? Born in 50’s I saw rock across the board. I wouldn’t trade my birthday with anyone. You’re lucky Kel, got this great guy holding your hand and introducing you to the greats. ❤️U2 ~ Peace ✌️
Kel, you nailed it; watch the live version from around 1978 and you'll see Alex looking at Geddy with a smirk implying it's pretty impressive to be able to write and play this very complicated music.
_"Greatest 3 piece rock band ever."_ Which is not a small amount of praise, considering that there are some really great trios. Of course, there are those (such as Primus) who probably wouldn't be the musicians they are if not for the influence of Rush, so it all circles back around. :D
When you realize this is about nightmares that Alex was having, it takes on a whole new meaning From SongFacts: Despite being an instrumental, the song tells a complete story, complete with plot and characters. It's based on some nightmares Alex Lifeson experienced. Divided into 12 segments, as follows: I-- Buenos Nochas, Mein Froinds! II-- To Sleep, Perchance To Dream III-- Strangiato Theme IV-- A Lerxst in Wonderland V-- Monsters! VI-- The Ghost of the Aragon VII-- Danforth and Pape VIII-- The Waltz of the Shreves IX-- Never Turn Your Back on a Monster! X-- Monsters! (Reprise) XI- Strangiato Theme (Reprise) XII-- A Farewell To Things. Villa Strangiato is a real place in Italy. It was the home of the late Barone (Baron) Strangiato, an Italian nobleman
Wonderful choice to introduce Rush ! 22 albums ,41 yrs. Of material , concept albums and greatest lyrics in the genre ! Only hastens my anticipation to watch your reactions to an epic piece of music by Rush also Xanadu .whimsical mysterious , and creative! Working man is more old school hard rock but a good intro to Geddy !
Loved Kel's reaction to an awesome band and an outstanding song. I grew up in Toronto and first heard Rush play in high schools and in local bars before they made it big. A complete privilege and wonderful time to grow up. So Kel's reaction takes me back home, as I live in Romania now. Thanks to you both for the memories!
My all time favorite band!. Seen them in 1979 Pink Pop festival in Holland. Incredible instrumental. RIP Neal Peart he was such a great drummer and person.
When Kel bursts out in laughter at 10:47, are my favorite parts of these vids. Kel appreciates the music we love so much and it really is moving to experience it for her first time hearing it. Kel-Rich.....WE WANT MORE MORE MORE !!!!
Rich jumping from air guitar to air bass to air drums reflects what watching this band live is like. All three are such spectacularly skilled musicians that it is hard to decide who to focus on at any given moment. I went to dozens of live concerts between 1975 and 1995. These three are as skilled as any I saw at their instruments. After locking in alternately on each one, I enjoyed defocusing on any one and just letting the ensemble wash over me. Seamless transitions, very complex but never overdone. I get the feeling that a lot of prog bands aspire to be Rush when they grow up, no disrespect intended. Rush is simply the standard.
My first Rush was La Villa Strangiatto, and I was hooked for life! I love how you guys react, you’re a bright ray of light! Much love and Prog Rock! 🤘🏼🤘🏼🎸🎸
Woah Rush rule's they were my first concert when I was 4. Went and saw them about 7 more times after that blew me away each time 3 guys making beautiful music
This to me is the best Rush work ever done, you guys are amazing, not sure why I love watching you guys, I'd like to see you cover Yes, Awakening, and the Meeting, both beautiful songs
I must have misheard. I thought she said "...that way" (which would be correct that they don't all come about in the same way or necessarily sound the same). Hmmmm, "...that well," though? Obviously, that's debatable among fans, but I don't think they did a terrible job on any of them. Rush is one of those bands that I can readily name plenty of songs (and not just from a single era) I love by them, while I would actually have to heavily scrutinize the discography to find any that I could maybe say I don't like to at least some degree. They are, indeed, _that great._ :D
Need a bit more volume, please ..... I love how she focuses on the music ... eyes closed and no distractions. Her image of the guys having fun, she's picking up on Alex perfectly!! Can't wait to see her reaction if she ever watches a concert video!! YYZ for an instrumental, maybe?? Or Xanadu?? Something from Rio would definitely impress .... And eventually the Clockwork Angels album. You're in for a wonderful ride - - All their stuff is great, but some is 'more great' than others :-) My favorite band .... THANKS!! Keep it up!!
I was watching a movie, and I saw this pop up. I had to jump on this reaction. These three guys are consummate professional musicians. Great choice too the guitar solo is epic!!
Every time I see a Rube Goldberg machine, I can't help but to hear _Powerhouse_ in my mind. Even _Breakfast Machine_ (from _Pee Wee's Big Adventure)_ is unable to supplant it.
Rush was my first love. I bought my first Rush album ( Permanent Waves) in 1981, when I was 13. I learned to play bass at first with Iron Maiden, but once I was good enough , I attacked everything Rush. They can do no wrong in my eyes.....or ears!🤘🏼🤘🏼🤘🏼🤘🏼
Neil studied with Freddie Gruber for over a year and changed from the matched drum stick grip to the traditional drum stick grip before recording "Test For Echo" in 1996. (I believe this is correct. Shortly after this, his daughter was killed in a car accident, and he left the drums for several years, until the release of "Vapor Trails" in 2002.) An interesting side note about his playing with Alex and Geddy after studying with Freddie Gruber for a year: When they started to record "Test For Echo," Geddy and Alex didn't really notice a difference. Neil thought that was a great compliment -- it's still me, but better & different. RIP, Neil. You were my inspiration to start playing the drums. I'm still trying to learn your songs after all of these years because I basically suck. Oh, well. Never give up; never surrender!
This is such an amazing song. First that just three people can create all this amazing music. Second that it was inspired by seven of Alex's nightmares, accounting for the several changes in pace and style. When originally recording it they played it dozens of times and still couldn't get it just right, taking parts of three takes for the album. It's truly amazing that they've actually been able to play it live since then.
Kel, I can understand why Rush appeals to you, being a highly trained musician. They are very precise, and masters of their instruments. I love the tempo changes and transitions, and how smoothly and perfectly they execute them. I first saw Rush in concert at age 14 in Buffalo, NY, on the Grace Under Pressure tour. My brother was a security guard there and was able to move me up to 4th row center! Rush sounded incredible live ! Those days are gone now though for the guys :(
I have listened to Rush for more than 30 years and Dream Theater for more than 25 years, and basically, Enough said...I appreciate all kinds of musical genres and musicians, but Rush and Dream Theater takes the cake....both bands have changed their musical style yet nonetheless are Master god musicians in their own right. Hopefully you can share some live versions of Rush and Dream Theater because that's a whole other experience! But keep them comin with Rush and Dream Theater...fughet about it.
I know how y'all feel when I have seen Rush in concert about 9 years ago when they stopped in West Palm Beach on Oct. 2, 2010 during their Time Machine tour. They rocked!
I love it. She loved it!! Now watch the time machine version of this so she can see them play it live. They are so good live! Thanks for the happiness:)
Fantastic choice! I love the fact that you picked it out of your own experience and that it was not a suggestion! These gents are phenomenal musicians. Kel mentioned them having a good time. Not only are they a cut above the norm musically, they are freaking hilarious! You've got to check out the intro to Spirit of the Radio from the Time Machine Tour!
RUSH is hands down the single greatest three piece rock band who has three of the greatest musicians and has some of the greatest compositions, lyrics and live performances of any band, or genre three peice or other.
I forgot how fun this was reaction was for you guys . I didn’t see anyone mention it,but Kel’s laughter was completely appropriate and timely as that piece in the song was taken from Raymond Scott’s composition called “Powerhouse” which ,if you ever watched Looney Tunes and Merry Melodies ,was used in their cartoons. It was always fun to watch Geddy and Alex dance around playing that part just like cartoon characters.
Rich, imagine that when you made this video, you were drumming to the tune, and in less than a year Neil you be gone. Heavy heart sadness typing this and it really does hurt big time especially since I am from the hometown, and Rush has been part of my growing up since the early 70s.
One of the best Rush songs. The live version on Exit Stage Left is the most amazing guitar solo ever. Love how this song builds and has so many time changes and different styles from mellow to happy to knock your socks off rock. Can't beat these 3 guys. They were my introduction into my love for music and wanting to learn to play guitar and because of them I've been to hundreds of concerts by so many different artists of all genres and have thoudands of CDs in my collection of music. Thanks to Rush who inspired my now favorite band Dream Theater. Of course bands like Genesis and Yes came before Rush but yes they were some of the very early pioneers of progrock. Long live progressive rock.
The first time I heard La Villa Strangiato was when I purchased the Hemispheres album in the late 70's. This song, as it is for much of Rush's material, is still just as enjoyable to listen to as it was that first time. It is awesome to watch Kel experience it for the first time.
Nice reaction! Alex Lifeson is definitely my favorite guitarist of all time, super underrated. Of course I equally enjoy Geddy and Neil as well.. Masters of their craft. Unfortunately Rush is not touring anymore, and the idea of any future shows is pretty unlikely. They announced their retirement from touring officially in 2018, mainly due to Neil’s physical problems from years of intense drumming and Alex’s arthritis. Geddy and Alex mentioned still wanting to play but since Neil first made it clear he didn’t want to continue, they didn’t want to continue touring without him. You can’t really blame them though after 40+ years. It’s sad as I never got to see them live, as I really got into Rush just as their last tour (R40) ended in 2015.
You can tell by the lines in your face that it's almost a week now :P... I was introduced to Rush in 1976 with their 2112 album but their form of prog had to grow on me and it wasn't until 1980 with Moving Pictures that I really got into Rush. Hemispheres was the third album I bought from them and "The Strange House" is one of my favourite instrumentals. A great song too for a first listen; it has a bit of everything Rush stand for, except, of course, the vocals. Cheers :)
I have been a fan since 2112 and we drove from Michigan for my first show, A Farewell to Kings tour in Toronto in 77 and have been a fan ever since seeing them only 5 more times... Strangiato is a great song as most are, but need to let her listen to A Farewell to Kings, 2112 and many others....
Ladies and gentleman Rich Gafter on the air drums, lol Yup i think many of us can relate . This is incredible, nobody does this , thanks Rush for all there awesome music.
Rich, sorry but you distracted from the pure genius of Rush on this song with all your drumming and guitar. Thanks for doing this song and please keep doing great bands like this.
There's definitely a reason why they called this 'an exercise in self-indulgence.' The purposefully set out to write an incredibly complex piece of music based on a crazy dream that Alex Lifeson had.😆
This is, (self admitted) the most difficult song they ever wrote and played. Because of all of the time changes ,in this long song, each member would ,at different moments, get lost as to what part of the song they were in. They tried for an entire month to record it in one sitting... Eventually, they gave up. They recorded it in 3 parts. Neil Peart is quoted saying that they had written a piece that was beyond their musical talent, at the time. By the time the tour came, they practiced it so much, that they could then play it live...cheers
Did you know that in an interview with Eddie Van Halen, he was asked what it's like to be the greatest guitarist in the world, he said "I don't know, you would have to ask Alex Lifeson"!
Kel’s reaction is actually almost similar to mine. It makes me laugh and smile. She seems to understand the band more than I did in my first impressions. Very cool!
Subbed for more Rush reactions. Loved this one. This is far and away my favorite Rush track.Of course, if you're going to go exploring down the Rush rabbit hole you need to cover the standards like 2112, Limelight, YYZ, Xanadu, The Trees, etc. Two of my favorites that may not get big shout outs would be New World Man and Jacob's Ladder. Try to give those a chance if you can. Keep up the great reactions!
Paul Scheuer if you want a ton of in-depth Rush reactions do a YT search for “Enoma Rush.” You won’t be disappointed! 😊 New World Man and Jacob's Ladder, +2 from me. At time of writing Enoma have done the latter I think, though I’ve not watched it yet. They’ve done *a lot* of reactions.
Good idea to lure Kel slowly into Rush through an instrumental, Geddy Lee's high-pitched voice is definitely an acquired taste! Back in high school in Bethesda, Md. in the late 70s, we were all hanging out at a head shop where one of our crew worked after school. They had an overhead projector, and one day our friend told us he was going to let us in on a little secret that was going to blow our minds away. He pulled down the screen and turned on the projector. What we saw next was the first music video I ever saw: and it was Xanadu by Rush. The video is here: ruclips.net/video/SEuOoMprDqg/видео.html My life was changed forever. There's a later live version on RUclips, from the Exit Stage Left show, which is awesome too. I think that version dates from 1981. Enjoy the trip back in time!
😅Kel-your reaction so reminded me of my first auditory strangiato journey . The music sucks you into a magical journey. With No lyrics so you can play out Alex's nitemare to your own discretion. At the songs end when you opened your eyes, I felt like saying " welcome back ! "
Totally cool hat dude!I'm not much of a metalhead, but more of a progressive rock fan. Rush is definitely common ground and one of my favorites ever since high school ('77- '80 for me). I remember when this album came out- it was anxiously awaited by me. This particular track is right up there with the most exciting and beautiful recordings I have ever heard. These three musicians are masters.
A lot of aspiring rock bands that I knew in college considered this tune the litmus for identifying whether they were any good or not. Drummers especially felt a sense of accomplishment if they could nail even one of the many parts of this song...and get through it all was quite a workout.
Great reaction
you may think that, but the rest of the world including critics don't think he is underrated, in fact most people will praise just how good he is.
Agreed
One of the best for sure! Definitely overshadowed by the greatest bassist and drummer who ever walked the earth.
Nope, he's seriously underrated.
Only underrated by people that are NOT Rush fans. We all know how awesome he is.
Fucking awesome. I was on the Rush in Rio concert, unforgettable. There’s a great Rush song that doesn’t get enough love, called Nobody’s Hero. You won’t see many people requesting it, but it’s beautiful.
Yeah, Nobody's Hero is really underrated and has some really good lyrics.
rjacamargo I love Rush but I hate Nobody’s Hero! Worst song on Counterparts. Always interesting when people have an opposite reaction to me though.😊
rjacamargo oh, if you’re after a reaction to Nobody’s Hero do a YT search for “Enoma Rush.” They have probably the most comprehensive (still growing) and in-depth list of Rush song reactions on the web. Nobody’s Hero is there. I’ve not watched that one yet because I don’t like the song. But I still might watch it at some point.
Nobody's Hero is awesome, I was bummed they didnt play it their last 4 tours I saw them.
Love the Rio live version. The way Alex rips into the solo....chills.
One of the most entertaining songs to jam with. Pure happiness :)
It is very enjoyable to see people experience for the first time, the music that shaped my youth 40 years ago.
My favourite guitar solo ever.........
2112 is a must, eventually
yes and By-Tor & The Snow Dog
Not to mention other bands like Led Zeppelin, Pink FLoyd, Yes, Genesis, the Who and ELP.
And Hemispheres for sure!
Rush is my all-time favorite!!!! Love you guys!!!
i wish more people knew about this song. I was fortunate to have a dad with decent taste who was in his prime when this type of music was being made.
I used to fall asleep to La Villa Strangiato on my Walkman...lol
My first concert was "Hemispheres" in Rochester N.Y.!! I love Kels reaction to Xanadu, and can't wait for this...Organic! and my Mom is a Canadian and family from Kingston, Toronto, Vancouver and N.B. Love you guys, eh! And Love Conquers All, for sure! ✌💜😎
8:32 is the start of some of the most haunting guitar lines ever recorded. Alex Lifeson is a genius! What a band Rush was. All virtuoso musicians.
Villa Strangiato starts like a flamenco influenced piece.
Rich, so excellent you left Kel to herself during A Lerxst in Wonderland. You could see her being moved higher and higher, smiling more and more. The lady gets it. Great show, both of you.
I my opinion, the greatest band of all time! No other band has a more diverse musical Library than RUSH!
I'd say there's a difference between experiencing this music young vs. older. Kinda like Christmas as a kid vs. now. When you listen to this now like you did as kid vs. an adult listening to it for the 1st time, not the same experience. These guys are truly genius its something you can't explain in words.
I've been listening to this for nearly 40 years. Blows my mind!
From Texas, you two are a Beautiful couple. Keep the love alive. God Bless
Agree "NOBODY'S HERO" beautiful song!!! A Must!!!
Y’all are too cute! I’m never not in awe of RUSH. Thanks for sharing.
Kel, you nailed it; watch the live version from around 1978 and you'll see Alex looking at Geddy with a smirk implying it's pretty impressive to be able to write and play this very complicated music.
Will miss RUSH. We were filmed briefly a few times on their Clock Work Angel's DVD, live in Dallas. Greatest 3 piece rock band ever.
_"Greatest 3 piece rock band ever."_
Which is not a small amount of praise, considering that there are some really great trios. Of course, there are those (such as Primus) who probably wouldn't be the musicians they are if not for the influence of Rush, so it all circles back around. :D
Yes Rush! The circle is complete. You have hit on all my favorite bands. But really, I love all your reactions and every band, every song. Thank you!!
Wish you guys the best and thanx for playing rush saw these guys on concert three times they were the best live band I have ever seen
When you realize this is about nightmares that Alex was having, it takes on a whole new meaning
From SongFacts: Despite being an instrumental, the song tells a complete story, complete with plot and characters. It's based on some nightmares Alex Lifeson experienced.

II-- To Sleep, Perchance To Dream
III-- Strangiato Theme
IV-- A Lerxst in Wonderland
V-- Monsters!
VI-- The Ghost of the Aragon
VII-- Danforth and Pape
VIII-- The Waltz of the Shreves
IX-- Never Turn Your Back on a Monster!
X-- Monsters! (Reprise)
XI- Strangiato Theme (Reprise)
XII-- A Farewell To Things.
Villa Strangiato is a real place in Italy. It was the home of the late Barone (Baron) Strangiato, an Italian nobleman
Sure, the name Strangiato sounds italian to me.
Rock and roll hall of fame showed how prolific. Plus the drummer wrote all the lyrics. Peart is a virtuoso
Rich, my older brother also introduced me to all this great music. Rush, Black Sabbath, Pink Floyd, Blue Oyster Cult...
Wonderful choice to introduce Rush ! 22 albums ,41 yrs. Of material , concept albums and greatest lyrics in the genre ! Picked my Favorite band. And one of my favorite songs by Rush. Keep Rocking, definitely more Rush🤟

If it hasn’t already been mentioned, part of this song was taken from Powerhouse by Raymond Scott. It’s on RUclips so check it out.
Do you mean that Rush copied from another person's song?
@@ItsLoriK I read a while back that funds were paid for the use.
Every time I see a Rube Goldberg machine, I can't help but to hear _Powerhouse_ in my mind. Even _Breakfast Machine_ (from _Pee Wee's Big Adventure)_ is unable to supplant it.

All the lp's from first to last, are a vision for life.
Cheers :)
My favorite song of all time. Never thought it would be a 9 minute rock jazz prog instrumental ha ha.
I love seeing someones reaction to new music :) Just subscribed . Have a Great adventure
I'm a total progressive rock freek, this 3 man band is in my heart, this song is my favorite
Love you guys. We are about the same age. Rush is the best
Love a laugh of enjoyment. I do it often my self
Ladies and gentleman Rich Gafter on the air drums, lol Yup i think many of us can relate . This is incredible, nobody does this , thanks Rush for all there awesome music.
These are three baaad dudes right here...best three-piece in the history of music.
She would love Ghost of a Chance,,,,a love song
ROCKY Rush RIVERA I love that song. Do you know if there’s any reaction to it somewhere?
A great song from an underrated album, RTB. ❤️
Love that song!
yes definitely. mabye " the pass" also.
Rich, sorry but you distracted from the pure genius of Rush on this song with all your drumming and guitar. Thanks for doing this song and please keep doing great bands like this.
I recorded cassette tapes of Moving Pictures and Exit Stage Left from a friend who had the vinyl album when I was in high school. 😂
Introducing it is beautiful. To someone that has no clue. Emotions!!! Yeah
There's definitely a reason why they called this 'an exercise in self-indulgence.' The purposefully set out to write an incredibly complex piece of music based on a crazy dream that Alex Lifeson had.😆
I like listening to music with you guys, thanks for your channel
Tulsa Oklahoma here , y'all are such a Cool Couple ! God bless
9:55 yeah, she gets it. WE HAVE ASSUMED CONTROL.
Attention all viewers of the RUclips federation
Man, Kel really got into La Villa. Oh, and Rush retired. I saw them at their R40 concert at the Forum in Inglewood Ca.
That laugh on the cartoon chase music part was.. perfect.
With La Villa , once you hear that one if you like it, you're in. A friend explains it as music with stories ?
Good idea to lure Kel slowly into Rush through an instrumental, Geddy Lee's high-pitched voice is definitely an acquired taste! Back in high school in Bethesda, Md. in the late 70s, we were all hanging out at a head shop where one of our crew worked after school. They had an overhead projector, and one day our friend told us he was going to let us in on a little secret that was going to blow our minds away. He pulled down the screen and turned on the projector. What we saw next was the first music video I ever saw: and it was Xanadu by Rush. The video is here: ruclips.net/video/SEuOoMprDqg/видео.html
My life was changed forever.
There's a later live version on RUclips, from the Exit Stage Left show, which is awesome too. I think that version dates from 1981. Enjoy the trip back in time!
Geddy's voice: My wife still doesn't like it. She says he sounds like an angry elf. But I love her anyway...
Kel is a real honey. Good job Rich. You two are great couple. Love your vids. Lucky guy!
Triumph, "follow your heart"!
😅Kel-your reaction so reminded me of my first auditory strangiato journey . The music sucks you into a magical journey. With No lyrics so you can play out Alex's nitemare to your own discretion. At the songs end when you opened your eyes, I felt like saying " welcome back ! "
Looking Beautiful as always Kel
This guitar riff puts me on another level.
Think she’s ready for that shirt. What a great piece of music that inspired me from childhood.
If you wanna see them have fun, you must check out Rush YYZ live in Rio as they have a blast and the whole audience is amazing.
Anticipation. That's the word she's looking for
A "wonderful" exercise of self indulgence, thanks to the Masters!!
Love it guys. All hail Rush.
You have to do 2112.
20 minutes of pure gold
A lot of aspiring rock bands that I knew in college considered this tune the litmus for identifying whether they were any good or not. Drummers especially felt a sense of accomplishment if they could nail even one of the many parts of this song...and get through it all was quite a workout.
Xanadu, 2112 and Hemispheres. Love what you are doing. Keep up the great work.
when this came out literally every musician in the world stood with their mouth agape
