Cool Forgotten Weapons merch! shop.bbtv.com/collections/forg...
In the early 1990s, the Brazilian Imbel factory made a small run of FAL rifles converted to 5.56mm using AR magazines. They used standard FAL receivers and bolt carriers, with a boltface cut for 5.56x45mm and a magazine well insert with a new magazine release compatible with the AR magazines. About 700 were imported by Springfield under the designation SAR4800 5.56mm Sporter. These were all post-ban configuration rifles, with fake solid flash hiders and thumbhole stocks. This particular one has been rebuilt in the Para configuration with a proper flash hider, folding stock, and requisite replacement top cover and bolt carrier.

I'm a police officer in Brazil and sometimes I use this rifle as my duty rifle. Actually it's a Imbel MD2. But they are basically the same.
Elias Bizarria I wish we could get those up here.
We can’t even get new IMBEL barrels here for the FAL. Don’t know how much longer we’ll be able to get the upper receivers.
@@glennarnold4108 Do you know why is that happening?
Henrique No I sure don’t. We need IMBEL upper receivers, lower receivers, and new barrels.
"it's a FAL, but in 5.56!"
I need this in my life.
Actually you can use 7.62 calliber too
@@pedrootenio4225 I have a 7.62 FAL. That this is in 5.56 is what makes it appealing.
5.56 is shit... for a full male experience use the 7.62...

@@LAHFaust doesn't seem to be
So wait, Isn’t this basically a FNC?
Ian: *Yes. But, actually no.*
More like FN CAL, which eventually succeed.
Yeah, a FNC bolt looks nothing like this bolt. The fnc uses a long stroke gas piston and a rotating bolt.
No, the Sar-4800 bolt is a tilting lock identical to FAL and it also has the FAL short-stroke gas system. The FNC is a turning bolt locking system with a long-stroke gas system more like an AK.
@@thaddeuscarpenter1580 🤘🤠🤘 Yeah mang! Awesome summary!
@@thaddeuscarpenter1580 Yes, correct. The FAL bolt is totally different to the CAL bolt which is again very different to the FNC bolt.
Fun fact: you can see the MD series in conflicts against drug dealers in Rio de Janeiro even this days.

The FAL is such a visually and aesthetically appealing rifle to look at. Want one so bad
Yup I have one and I love the way it looks, such a distinct look for sure
You should take a look at the IA2, would love to see what you as a gun guy thinks about the Brazil newer 5.56 assault rifle.
Also the IA2 .308 version, which is honestly fundamentally pretty different.

The person that bought that in pre-ban configuration when it sunsetted:
*IT'S TIME.*
Here is my 2 cents. We have one. A fixed stock conversion.
1. It seems lighter and handier than the 7.62 version. But I’ve never checked. I imagine because of a skinner barrel?
2. It’s a barrel of monkeys fun to shoot. Imagine a FAL you can easily put 500 rounds through in an afternoon of running and gunning.
3. In no way does this compete with an AR. Less so a modern one. So don’t buy it expecting that!
4. Then why buy it? See #2. Just an awesomely fun gun.
5. Ours is very reliable. We even have the gas set to feed wolf 55g steel case. So you CAN run the cheap stuff in it.
Regards,
Marky
try to use the original FAL in the Araguaia against the fucking comunist..........its like use black pawer guns against the soviets......this shit are horrível (terrible) .........mans die for this.......
It sounds very brasilian to modify a weapon so you can use cheap rounds 😂
As Ian says this rifle were created in Brazil not in Argentina. But in Argentina we came up with some kind of 5.56 ak: the FARA. it was produced in limited numbers until it was cancelled in the 90 because of budget cuts. Nowadays the Argentinian marines use the m16 as their service rifle so it’s clear that we abandoned the idea of the fara
The FARA was based on an Ak gas and bolt system

The Imbel MD-97 is a really cool gun, it'd be really cool if Ian could get his hands on a original.

I really enjoy the work you are doing, transmitting such amount of knowledge with true passion for the weapons as much as for the transmission act itself. You love teaching and that is great as i enjoy learning new things ;) Thank you Ian !
These need to be made again
I love that conversion!!! Wish they were still being made and imported.
Very cool as usual Mr Ian. Although I have to say that every item you document on this channel is very cool as well. I look forward to your content and I wish you success and all the best to you and yours!
I like thumb hole stocks in some applications, but of course you have a point about practicality. Keep up the great videos.
GOD DAMNIT
I was planning/am planning on bidding on this rifle. Now theres going to be more competition for it.
Wonderful video as always though.
Interesting gun indeed. Love the fal series of guns
Thank you , Ian .
I'd love to see this run at a 2 gun. Pair it with some older kit for a "what if" run if the FAL had stayed in an intermediate cartridge. I expect we all know how it will run, but would still be cool!
Loved the real FN Parafal I got to use while working class III. Tons of fun.
absolutely beautiful rifle
just stunning
no words left to describe it's sheer beauty
The Galil is heavy for a 5.56 also, but no one has ever accused it of being a slouch. This looks like a great rifle, and i love the change to the Para configuration. Someone had good taste. I have heard the Inbel guns are well made. A gunsmith friend of mine in another state likes their parts kits for reasonable-cost FAL builds. My acquisition of one will have to wait until i move to a free state some time in the future. Great video as always. Thank you
That FAL in 5.56 looks like a heavy variant of FNC.
Still...love it and want it!
If we beg, maybe Imbel will start importing FAL’s again. Because I NEED this really bad. I hate my AR and if I can get an FAL in 5.56, I’d be thrilled.
I'll take your poor AR off your hands, lol
Almost all FAL's simply look Functional & purposeful , their not as rad as Steyr or as iconic as an AK but they are up on the cool wall , this one in my eyes is really cool and getting as cool as any FAL is able .Thanks Ian,great show as always !
I hope we get to see Ian reviewing a 762 Brazilian FAL one day.
Awesome rifle, I bet it's a ton of fun to shoot!
I have one of these. Converted to standard configuration. In my experience almost all these were tinkered with, mostly by getting rid of the thumbhole stock and flashier ( even when it wasn't really legal). I saved the parts. It'll be interesting to see what this sells for.
One heckuva conversion.
Totally cool Ian
This fal is Brazilian. ESSE FAL É BR HUEHUE AQUI SÓ TEM LOKO. GLÓRIA A DEUSSSSSSS.

AHEOOOOO HUEHUEHUEHUE
A fascinating custom/conversion that would be even better if offered in this configuration over the counter today.
I agree Ian with your assessment. As a owner of a SAR-48, 7.62, of coarse I have been tempted many time's to send it to DSA for the full treatment of one of their cool updates but there goes the collectable value. Thats why I just bought a LMT 308 & FN SCAR 17 so I guess I have covered all my base's.BTW the LMT is simply incredible, my favorite 308, hands down!
Pretty cool! Thanks Ian :)
DSA needs to revisit this rifle and produce them...!
I think the FAL Para is one of the best looking rifles ever made. Including this one.
I sure would love to get my hands on that one.
The short arm of freedom in 5.56 brought to by Brazil.
Watching Forgotten Weapons auction videos reminds me of the TV show watched by the space station general in the "Alien 4" movie... it's a pretty good feeling to somehow live in this movie's Future nowadays.
Unrelated to this video but Ian you should totally do a cocktail list for all the books y'all publish for their respective countries. Would be ballin!

Much better. Back in the bad old days I converted several FALs to pre-ban configuration myself. The thumbhole stocks on those are not only ugly, they're uncomfortable to me as well.
This gun was the start of the development of a native assault rifle by imbel. After several years of evaluation by the Brazilian army the MD97 was deemed unfit for the necessities of the army. So in 2010 imbel launched the IA2 program to replace all FAL rifles. The IA2 is a modern assault rifle chambered in 5.56 and 7.62 and is currently replacing the FAL in all units of the Brazilian army. This article shows the project and the gun in more detail. www.thefirearmblog.com/blog/2017/05/17/imbel-5-56x45mm-ia2-riflecarbine-development-status-report/amp/
"Modern rifle"
So if this is just a converted FAL doesn't that mean that in theory, you could set it up with some of the more modern aftermarket FAL setups? IE railed upper, handguard, etc? Because now I'm imagining a tacticool 5.56 FAL and it's a spicy image.
Maybe you would be interested in following the fama development. ruclips.net/video/vgfPxqBfaJM/видео.html

I have one in 5.56, with the thumb hole stock.
DSA needs to start making a modernized 5.56 FAL
Hey Ian, can you make a video about de FARA 83? Is the crown jewel of the argentinian rifles, and very, very rare one
Best show on television.
I love love love love FAL/HK G3 pattern rifles!
The FAL is such a heavy gun to have in 556. That would be an interesting gun to shoot.
There is a modern polymer made version of the MD 97 called IA2 made by IMBEL.
It really depends on which version, the 7,62 version is based on the fal, but the 5,56 version is its own weapon.
I think it's a neat gun, would love to see it firing in full auto.
at Century in Montreal we had cases of non-converted uppers in 5.56, made in Argentina I believe. No sleeves for mag, actually made to fit 5.56 mags. Always wanted to buy one, but they never sold them for some reason while I worked for them
I used to visit Springfield Armory about 20 years ago quite often. I live about an hour or so away
Bet it would be a very smooth shooting rifle
Oh I'd love this
A FAL that doesn't punch you in the face when you fire it. That's a win, win!
I wish you showed us an example of the rounds they fire alongside the gun like a dummy round or something. I know this one is just a 5.56 we all know what that looks like but still it would help for the other guns also.
I love this, in the future that import story will only add to its' value!
Would love to see you shoot this!
Sounds like a product Brownell's ought to look at :)
thanks for doing this, can you please have a range session with it and also using it in 3 gun?

eu vou poder morrer em paz quando esse canal lançar um video sobre o imbel ia2 kkkkkkk
O cara precisa ter um modelo, a não ser que visite o Brasil denovo
Sweet gun 🙂👍🏻👍🏻
Basically the FNC’s long lost brother from Brazil
You’re absolutely right another thing to add on the practicability is that it takes an A.R. 15 magazine, which that is something that the Ruger mini 14 should take a look at Shirley if Embell can do it rigger conduit otherwise it is another fine firearm that is practicable in a patriots arsenal of choice of platforms 👍 another thing I would like to add is that Springfield also imported or made another FAL, which was called the S a R 48 hopefully you can do a review on that one sometime
I love the fal 50
I purchased an SAR-4800 Springfield receiver in 7.62 from DSA at some point in the early 90's. Dave told me that the shipment was having all kinds of difficulty clearing customs and that Springfield gave up on their future manufacture. He bought the entire lot at a discount and managed to work out the problems and take delivery. I bought a pristine British parts set for the receiver. Prior to assembly I contacted Springfield and inquired about assembly. They said OK and I drove the 150 miles to Genesco to drop off every thing I had. I had it parkerized instead of paint and picked it up 10 days later. When I got home I found the stock wasn't attached (for legal and tax reasons) but the assembly tool was included. Of my 4 FAL's this is my main shooter.
This is soo cooool.
You won’t need a lead sled to bench fire this gun. Just a couple C-clamps. 😊
It’s Liz day cool though, looks fun.
Love it
I shot one years ago. Jammed on me a couple times, been a while but I pretty much remember it as an example of why Gene Stoner's platform is charging on and the FAL mostly isn't with its crappier recoil impulse and heavy trigger.
But, they're cool in that they're a lot closer to what the FAL engineers had in mind, as opposed to what US government forced it to become.
Very Cool FAL in 5.56x45mm !!!!!!!!!!
Solid
I would consider buying one if they ever come back on the market. FN! Get to work! I want one.
love it!
It’s pretty cool

I agree with Ian.
Thats really kewl
You need see the Imbel IA-2, is a insane gun mixed FAL and M4 and they say is a original weapon
And a modernized one, weighs more than a m4, and use abs plastic. One of these guns exploded in hands of a police officer in são Paulo. After this, the Sao Paulo police decides use FN Scar-ls . Good times in the army Pvt 328 from Comando company and service's. Npor não é formação.

I call mine a Spring-Fal. Very rugged, reliable rifle.
This kind of brings up something I've wondered about. As I understand it, the prototype of what became the FN FAL was designed for the 7.92x33mm Kurtz cartridge, then adapted for the 7.62 Nato. Did FN or anyone else ever try a FAL in 7.62x39mm? I suppose it would have the same problem as this, being a bit heavy, as well as being too expensive to compete with the SKS and AK.
Soooo cooll. I am from Brazil and these are very popular among the police from various states. Sadly I moved to Portugal and here all we can shoot is a slingshot, provided it has the original rubber.
One of my AR-15's has a thumbhole stock on it xD. But I think this gun is much better in this paratrooper configuration.
I heard that back to 00s, an US company imported Imbel MD97 style .223 FAL, but now they no longer import these .223 FALs.
