    The Galil ARM 5.56 is perhaps one of the most iconic rifles to come out of the 60's. Rugged, dependable, but heavy.
    Despite only being equipped with crude iron sights, this rifle gave us a very tight group at 100 yards, but how does it perform on the extended service rifle course?
    Ammunition used: IMI M193 5.56x45mm ball.

      interesting....my Tavor 16” shoots 2 MOA w/ fed XM 193 55 grain ammo using an ACOG, my Tavor 18” shoots 1.5 MOA (when I’m trying to shoot groups)....using a 4x ACOG and 77 grain My X-95 shoots 2.5 MOA at 100 with cheap 55 grain ammo. Remember the Tavor is a Battle Rifle and is designed to shoot Minute of Man versus Min of Angle....anyone that’s legitimately trying to shoot groups with a Tavor doesn’t know their intended purpose. They are extremely robust and very, very, very reliable. I have one that has 12000 rounds of Wolf 55 grain Russian ammo and the only issues I’ve ever had with it are magazine or ammo related. Having said all that the open sighting system is completely different. Totally different than the AR 15....I would have absolutely no problem going to an urban combat zone with a Tavor in 5.56....Not sure what the circumstances are but they may be overestimating the type of rifle and how it operates. If your target is 18” across and your using 55 grain, 62, 64, 69, 75, or 77 grain ammo and you have at least a 4 power ACOG you will be able to hit your steel targets if you know how shoot...Open sights I don’t bother on anything past 100 yards because I don’t have an elevated platform to shoot off of....

      Scott Saylors no doubt. I’m certain if I practiced shooting groups I could get them but the Tabors are battle rifles. Get a good zero whether it’s a 25/50 or 100 and practice mobility it tight quarters. The Tavor with a Geissele Trigger is very capable of shooting 1 MOA although it’s designed TO BE A BATTLE RIFLE....

    When we did national service we were warned that the rifle was not a bottle opener that shot bullets. FYI, you can also use the wire cutter to open bottles and teh dust cover, when taken off, was a pretty damn good can opener. Put three of them together and you can hang pots for coffee over a fire as well. Very useful rifle

    I'm interested to know how our south African vektor Lm4 would do. It's a galil but we elongated the stock, the front sight ring covering the front post is also larger than the original galil. This was done to increase the sight picture in our African conditions. Quite a few other extras I won't get into. The Lm4 is the semi version of the military R4.

  • @RonDevito

    I've been binge-watching these videos. I have a FAL PARA, a FAL Standard, a 16" AR, a 20" AR, 2 AKs, a Garand, and an M48 Mauser. I've always wanted a Galil, because you know - it's iconic. It's good to see how accuracy-wise - when shot normally from field positions, and normal configurations - many of these rifles are not what they're cracked up to be. I see a clear pattern among all of them where things start to go downhill at 300 and pretty much after that is hit or miss - mostly miss. I did expect better from the old school Galil. I don't think you'll get much better results with the new Galil ACE, because the rear sight is the same type of flip leaf that requires guessing elevations (past 300 probably should aim at the top of the head to get a center mass hit).

    • @pettifogger0712
      @pettifogger0712 4 года назад

      Nice collection! *If* you can - although unlikely if you live in the 'States - try and get hold of the South African LM4: it is the local version of the Galil ARM and is pretty accurate in the right hands - I shot to qualify on one with the SANDF Reserve Force [I am in the Military Legal Services but even lawyers need to know how to shoot in the SANDF LOL] in 2004 (despite having ZERO firearms experience) and it was accurate enough to make me a threat (LOL) to any targets out to 300m. I also shot the Z88 (the local clone of the Beretta 92F but built to MUCH higher tolerances and better engineered) - LOVED that one and wanted to buy one but sadly they are no longer being made and any examples in new/as new condition are almost impossible to find. The Colonel/Liaison in charge of us cut his teeth on the R1 (the local version of the FN FAL) and swore blind by it...he and a lot of his contemporaries weren't too happy to give up their beloved (and hard hitting) R1's for the 5.56mm R4's when they were introduced into SADF service in the late 1970's/early 1980's

    I'm actually surprised that it's even that accurate with the rear sight on the dust cover, and front sight on the gas block. I was expecting worse.
    I would love to see how a galil designated marksman rifle with scope does.

    • @iDatedMyPizza
      @iDatedMyPizza 4 года назад +1

      The gas block mounted sight is actually a very stable platform for sights. On AK platform rifles, the dust cover is usually not very stable, but on the Galil, it is very stable.

    • @Tunkkis

      The Galil and the Finnish RK series of rifles it is based on both have reinforcements added to make the receiver cover a more stable platform for the rear sight.

    @ashleyphotog 3 года назад +1

    That Rifle looked so steady to shoot, you instantly got the impression that the sights, while good enough for combat, were holding the Galil back in it's potential accuracy....along with the wind. Love to see what one would do with a tactical scope in low wind.

  • @Jesses001

    I am thinking the wind really did a number on you here. The sights are better then the standard AK...I know because I have an AK right here, ha. I guess for long range shooting though at least the AK sights are...small? Anyway I do not own a Galil currently because...well they are really expensive collector items these days, but I did like the sights...compared to my AK.

  • @reddevilparatrooper
    @reddevilparatrooper 5 лет назад +2

    It's basically an infantry rifle designed for the 300 plus combat range. The M193 55 grain bullet was designed for that type of range and combat accuracy. Surprised that you made hits at 400 and 450 meters. That is almost beyond the "Rifleman's Quarter Mile" which is 400 yards. From watching old battlefield footage from the Yom Kippur War of 1973 in the Sanai Desert. The terrain looks similar to the Mojave desert of California a.k.a Ft. Irwin National Training Center. There are depressions and dead space within the 200 to 400 meter battle range. Some places were flat in some valley regions but there is plenty of cover in the ground but not ideal firing positions but good enough to get cover if being fired upon.

    Good video - just a bit of advice: I shoot the Galil/R-series rifle (South African variant) consistently in service rifle matches up to 400m. I zero the rifle for a 100m, then turn the front sight post in a quarter turn for 200m, and half a turn for 300m. When going to 400m we reset the front sight post for 200m setting and flip the rear sight up from 3 - 5. Works like a charm. This rifle in right hands is a fairly incredible piece of hardware. We have our national team constantly outperforming other nations with their M-4's and M-16's etc to win the day. Our Protea captain consistently shoots averages of between 43 and 45 out of of 50 (that is 430-450 out of 500 individual scores) in these competitions with this rifle.

    • @9HoleReviews

      I think we need more time on the ARM to be fair. We've got a copy Galil here that I'd like to re-do this test with. As shown, the grouping that the rifle put out is very tight, and I think this is evident that the operator needs more time on the system to know the sight settings as you suggested.

    Please build a windblock for spotter scope. I know, its NOT O.G. Spotter is supposed to viewing with comparible conditions as shooter. But we need to spotter to have clinical-level data for feedback. And the spotter is not the trigger person. So , its all good. It just makes sense. Allow non tactical but practical accomodations for spotter dude. At least in some videos. It'd make for an all around, efficient learning experience for everybody...range-folk and viewers alike.

    On an incomplete would you guys ever consider going back to the rifle with inhanced sights or even a scope to show that the rifle or rifles are capable? I've heard you both agree on other videos that with better sights you both felt rifle was more capable, thanks.

      if it is feasible, yes. The K2 is easy, the FAL para is not, we'd have to get a new dust cover for it, and it is not our rifle. Same with the Galil. I think of the three the Galil is the most difficult to find the original scope mounts for.

    Great review. Rifle tested is not an original Israeli spec rifle, the original spec ARM has 18" barrel. This one appears to be probably 16 inch. Probably would not have made that much difference in the test. IMI did import some shorter barrel ARM to us commercial market In pre-ban days.

    It us not accurate. Not reliable.
    Any M16 a1 or acr 15 us much better in terms of accuracy and reliability.
    Unless you want to use it as a bottle opener then it is good but it will be a very expensive one.

    I know this has nothing to do with today's video but the one rifle I'd like to see y'all test is the French MAS36. My understanding is the French Foreign Legion loved that rifle and were made to turn it in and was issued another battle rifle.

    • @clarksavage6050
      @clarksavage6050 5 лет назад

      The MAS36 wasn't used that much. There weren't enough of them in 1940 and most French troops still carried re-chambered WW1 Berthier rifles. Even then, as the MAS-36 was about to enter service, the Manufacture d'Armes de St-Étienne had already come up with a semi auto replacement, the prototypes MAS-39 & MAS-40. Their development was put on hold during the occupation (blueprints had to be kept hidden from the Nazis) and resumed with the MAS-44 which, after tweaking was adopted as the MAS-49-56 simply known as FSA (Fusil Semi-Automatique) to the French soldier. So the Legion barely used the MAS-36, the 13e DBLE would have used it in Narvik but the Legionnaires who fought at Bir Hacheim with the Free French and later in France were equipped with British and US weapons. Between 1945 and 1949 they used the MAS-36 along some Kar-98, M-1 carbines etc. in Indochina before the FSA was fielded and used in Indochina, Algeria, Chad, Zaire etc. up to the early 80s.

      We actually got an SKS in to take out, but were having trouble clearing even 300 yards...when we inspected the rifle more closely, we saw massive degradation of the rifling...the unit we received was a true T56 which had clearly seen heavy use. We knew it wasn't an accurate representation of what "could" be done with the rifle, and we're waiting to get our hands on another at some point.
