It's been over about 5 years but I will say Manny's chophouse was pretty good recommendation the last time I went to Lake Wales. Our family used to stop by all the time when we were on our way to Bartow or Wauchula.
I actually took the long 75 minute haul down 60 from Fellsmere/Vero area to Lake Wales a few weeks ago and I was really disappointed that the town was in poor condition. Everything was all boarded up and closed and it wasn't even 10:00 p.m. yet. The whole entire town was dead and Spook Hill was just kinda lame. Driving through downtown on 17 there was no shops, restaurants, or bars that were even open and there was no cars at all either. They were doing the construction work in downtown and no one was around. That whole area out there has to be one of the saddest places in Florida. With Polk County being the fastest growing in the state I was expecting their to be a lot more growth and prosperity in Lake Wales but there's nothing. It seems like all the growth is happening right around the I-4 region but everything south of Lakeland and Winter Haven basically get nothing. It's a shame because it's a really beautiful country area but it's been ruined because there's no investment and all the Orange groves that I used to see as a child are dying. A lot of the towns off US 27 like Lake Wales and Avon Park used to be great towns to stop. Between a lack of investments, economic downturns, the mining businesses, the damage to crops and farmland from hurricanes, and the downfall of the citrus industry, that whole center region of Florida south of I-4 is in horrendous condition. It's hard to even acknowledge that region of the state as actually being a part of Florida, it has more of a rural Texas or Oklahoma vibe.
Jose when I went over to frost proof fl I thought the samething about someone might be killing the orange groves off. that scenic ridge with orange groves is my favorite spot very peaceful but I can just see them building homes it's sad too see.
Would be nice if they could restore the Walesbilt Hotel in downtown Lake Wales, that's the tall building, once a luxurious hotel, been closed for decades.Would be cool if you were able to tour it,like the one in Sebring.I will say though Lake Wales has some nice lakeside parks plus Bok Tower that's a big hilltop tourist attraction with an overlook view, look it up!!
I’ve been here for 6 months.. thought there were some employment aspects .. ‘ NONE’ here in this Lake Wales, they only have a small Publix store, a new renovation Winn Dixie, and the everyone’s Walmart.. #SAD!! if one want to go eat at a restaurant or shopping mall one would need to travel to cities like Davenport, Lakeland, or Orlando.. your vehicle must be in good driving shape because you’re driving anywhere you need or want to go, everything is driving distance.. I’m so ready to leave ‘Little Country Town Lake Wales..😢 it’s broken down.. ‘ nuttin here’, but it’s cute💕😂
It looks different this time …maybe you’re on different drugs?? The first left was to downtown Btw lake wales is under a $20 million renovation Lake wales isn’t a town It’s huge and you didn’t even go down by the lake
Town is laid out just fine but if you gotta pull over and look at a map I can understand why you think its laid out bad... But yeah its bad here, we got gators, snakes, spiders, bears come to town once in awhile, coyote they everywhere, citrus packing plants smells horrible with the right wind blowing, ya smell cow crap after it rains, Yankees in winter and everyone here carries a gun or two.. Horrible place to live.....
Your comment on power shifting to developers was very insightful.
Jose, you should try standup comedy.
