This is a great way to really show how hard it is to figure out what’s legit and not, each video was like 1-2 minutes LONG, MOST SPEEDRUNS ARE HOURS AND PEOPLE ARE STILL SAYING “If your a pro, you’d totally notice something wrong.” OH REALLY??!
While I don't disagree with the general point, this isn't a good example of that. Most of the speedrunners judging the clips in this video are, by their own admission, largely unfamiliar with the speedruns of the different games shown and certainly not pros at any of them. For most of the clips they basically said outright they didn't know the game and were guessing.
Also, it is _way_ easier when you know for a fact a video is supposed to contain something fishy, and most people will see the cheated videos only after they are exposed. The unconscious bias of hindsight.
@@bigchungus6827 yeah, though I think they could've done a bit better in terms of analysing the clips, I got 2.5/4 despite only having played and watched 1 of them enough to be knowledgable. You would think a pro of the game in question would be better suited to spotting the errors, but I do think for some of these types of cheats a pro of a game has done so many runs and had so many unlikely things happen that they are more forgiving to inconsistencies because they have personally seen some extremely unlikely things happen to themselves. Spotting cheaters is just so hard and you don't want to be to the person falsely calling someone out.
I'd argue that the generalized point is more for the game's those pros ARE specialized in, like DarkViper is more specialized in GTA speedruns, so give him a few fake clips of cheated GTA speedruns and he would likely be able to spot them no problem, take him out of his zone of expertise and you get different results which was the case here.

@@Caio22011 I don’t think it’s him “not noticing he finished without holding a weapon”, I think he just didn’t know “no weapon = pistol”, and assumed “no weapon = last used weapon”.
This was a really fun concept Karl, great video. Grats to Wirtual as well, I'd like to think he watches so many runs back in Trackmania that his ability to see small minute differences in runs is second nature to him at this point
I mean it wouldn't have changed anything tho, he thought that bond should have the machine gun so the second clip would've just proven him right. In the end he knew what the mistake was, he just thought that the pistol is the right weapon
Great example of how Game Logic can work very differently than real life. Logically Bond would put away the weapon he used in the level, but Game Logic dictates he puts away the default weapon since he switched to unarmed.
@@The_Endless_Nownah cos he thought it was SUPPOSED to be the machine gun, he didnt know that no gun = pistol and the most recently used gun was machine gun
People are talking about wirtual's knowledge, but i think Smant's analysis is really impressive. He noticed things others didn't, and while he didnt have the specific game knowledge, his answers were all pretty close. The fact he was able to pick out exactly what was wrong in games he hadn't even played is awesome, even if he misunderstood the 007 one and didn't know the exact scandals the splices were from
Yeah, although he lacked knowledge, his analysis was very good. Wirtual either knew all of these cheating scandals or looked them up, considering he was the only one who did a post commentary analysis.
@@bertholdb9037 Well, I would not call it cheating, since he had to find the exact way the run was cheated by himself, but he could have looked up what cheating scandals existed in the history of this games to see if he can find any of these in the videos.
@@StAngerNo1 He specifically talked about watching Karl's videos in the past, and someone else got the correct answer I think because they had watched Karl's videos (I have ADD and my short term memory is a sieve) so I wouldn't give Smant a round of applause for his analysis...it's more weighted towards those who happen to know what to look for, either because they know that particular game very well or because they had knew the scandals that happened in that community...probably by watching Karl's videos lol. Smant wouldn't know what to analyze if he didn't know at least generally how these games had been cheated. I did thoroughly enjoy Smant's misplaced confidence in the Goldeneye section tho.
You being acknowledged and responded to by some of the best speedrunners of multiplle games and able to conjure the most popular speedrunners shows the work you have put into the community of speedrunning. You yourself are a legend holding records of some of the hardest games to do so in and showing respect to those who bested you in the same game or other games where you admit couldnt hold a candle to. I love your content man, no one holds a candle to your knowledge of the community on how to explain it to us folk. Cheers man.
The fact that you put Markiplier at the end of the video while explaining how easy could be to trick your audience when splicing your footage is actually pretty funny. Really good video though, probably one of my favorites of yours! :D
Karl should make this a series, it's very fun to play along and watch the other runners come to their conclusions! I even know someone who could craft two almost identical Donkey Kong runs but then again, they would probably both be fake!
When will we get someone eating a pizza while their character is responding to inputs? Would be legitimately interesting to see ZFG, Linkus, Atrioc, and AstralSpiff do these for their own genre of game specialities...people who are very well versed in the glitches and quirks of their games. Although it'd be equally fun to give someone like Spiff a Poppy Playtime video with "out of bounds endgame warp glitches" that flat out don't exist...yknow since that one time when he was briefly a Poppy Playtime speedrun moderator someone tried that.
Billy Mitchell doesn't put the toilet seat back down after using it because he doesn't lift it (he pees sitting down). Edit: upon further review, it seems Billy Mitchell actually pees in the sink.
It's kinda funny when someone doesn't see the hidden mistake but guesses the right clip, but it's straight up hilarious when someone spots the mistake but doesn't know enough about the game to know which one is the cheated clip. That Golden Eye one made me chuckle when he said "I'm not even watching number 2"
the whole point is that the runners don't know enough about the game, this would have been better if multiple legit runs were provided, that way something like this doesn't just rely on game knowledge
That feels like such specific game knowledge to expect someone to know if they don't already know the game, expecting Bond to be holding the gun he was last seen holding is much more logical.
@@bostonrailfan2427 well no, you would assume the clip is with the last gun held, even if he was unarmed. you'd need specific gameknowledge to know that if bond was unarmed he would be holding a pistol. so yeah i would have come to the same conclusion that the pistol one was fake
@@BobBoican It is also the gun you start with in the level. Not holding any weapon at the end? End animation using the starting weapon would make perfect sense.
i don't play games. haven't in nearly 10 years. i got that shit right. if someone known for playing/watching games, is praised, where's my fucking medal? it's crazy how someone intrenched in gaming culture, knows gaming culture stuff. but someone with a life and no time to waste on silly kids toys, knows just as much if not more, is not as "crazy" or when you use your brain and think of the word you want.... "impressive". but how can i expect educated language from people who only know games. hmmm, Crazy!
Among these, I have only played Minecraft. And I completly blanked on the existance of splicing. But an educated guess on how Karl would think, and went "he probably went 1, 1, 2."
I knew exactly about the scandal in question with the loading screen error, but for us watching at home and playing along it was impossible to know which one it is without having the seeds to check. Other than that a great video idea, hopefully more like it in the future.
Markiplier 10/20 odds jumpscare at 24:45, that was a fun one to research, if you ever need a guy to explain FNAF AI on any of your videos, let me know, long time fan here :)
this was such a cool way to do a collab while still focusing on the kind of content you like making, Karl. absolutely would love if you did this again. and Wirtual, as reigning champ, needs a return if/when you do.
At the same time, if it is a seed that at some point that have been disected several times by the speedrunning community, i guess its kinda common knowledge to remember it when seeing it
@@SuguSugux Why it's faked? putting it short, absurd luck in terms of failed movement opportunities from every animatronics near the end, explained by a splice near the end of the night to an easier night, then another to show the 10/20 result
Man, this is really disappointing to learn. I know Mark's an entertainer, not a speedrunner (or challenge runner) but I still thought he would have more integrity than that.
I mean, Summoning Salt has made like 4 videos on Punch-Out. It's natural to gravitate towards the game you play, and especially as a big content creator, it's an easy way to breathe life into the community.
I love how many people you included in this video, both the people creating the clips, as well as the ones evaluating them. I only looked at the raw clips for a short while before impatiently returning to the main video, but I think I would've failed this tasks spectacularly (though I was sorta on the right track in some cases, so there's hope)
In cyber security, you have a system where a team tries to intentionally break into a system and another team tries to figure out how they broke in and/or try to stop them. It would be interesting if the speed running community would do the same by having speed runners give moderators a few clips and see if they could detect the cheated one.
I've always thought if I had the skills to be a speedrunner in ANY game, I would love to do challenges like this all the time, trying to educate the wider community by intentionally cheating (making it very obvious and clear that I do this sort of thing so that no one accuses me of being deceptive!) and challenging viewers and moderators alike to spot the cheats!
@@thesuperginge1348 People are doing this. I think OP is a little misguided, the issue isn't "moderators". Speedruns are there available for anyone to watch and see. But as said in this clip, if you aren't going in knowing it was cheated some of the things might be very hard to spot especially if it's a novel way of cheating but even if it isn't. Of course there are people right now thinking up new ways to "cheat", openly (not submitting their times and instead just saying "hey guys I found this thing") and that's often how old cheaters get detected, when someone independently invents their way of cheating so it's "obvious". But a lot of these games have decades of playing, you don't figure out new obscure ways to cheat every day.
Loved this video format! I hardly ever comment but this was such an awesome collaboration I just had to. Thank you Karl for putting this together! And overall, thank you for all the work you put into video game history, speed running, scandals, etc. There is a great deal of depth to the gaming world and you have put a spotlight on it!
@@z31tl05that's not at all what he said. He said that Karl was still making super high quality and entertaining videos even though he has to put so much attention, focus and stress onto the lawsuit. Most people couldn't make as much or anywhere near as high quality content as Karl can do while being in his situation, it's impressive as heck.
@phantomsnare5925 recognize the obvious... Isn't that big of a feat. Why wouldn't Karl be on track with high quality content when it's the high quality that pays his bills and feeds his family. Right now he sunk a lot of money into the silly bitchell case and everyone in their right frame of mind would keep making money. Why would or should Karl stop making high quality content? Don't be such a snowflake just because I pointed out someone doing his job and feeding his family is the norm
people will cheat to win at family board games against their siblings, and they'll cheat to be higher on a leaderboard in a game no one cares about to show up strangers
@@dopaminecloud I genuinely do not understand that compulsion. Because they have to know they're not actually good at it. What does it matter what others think?
@@noneyabidness9644 It's a mystery to me as well. I only understand the personality requirements to engage in the behavior. You need an amount of arrogance, which is essentially a bloated entitlement towards yourself and a disrespect towards everything else. Only by adequately devaluing the honor-rules can you justify the behavior and engage in it. This can express in two directions as far as I know: They can feel they are either owed the result, or on the other hand, they can simply be looking down on the competition.
@ a RUclipsr named TheBones5 recently did a small deep-dive into the code and odds of his run, and how he believes it's spliced and edited, in one of his iceberg videos. Edit: The Video "The Technical FNAF Iceberg Explained (2/2)," he begins talking about it at 36 minutes.
Very good video. It really demonstrates just how hard it can be to find a fake run. It was very surprising to me that multiple acclaimed speedrunners would have such a hard time. In hindsight, that is to be expected when it isnt their game being displayed.
...that jab at Markiplier for faking his 10/20 FNAF 2 victory was really, *supremely* subtle. I just happened to catch it thanks to TheBones5 RUclips channel on RUclips.
idk why mark doesn't just acknowledge it, and maybe do it for real. It was a long time ago and nobody was competing with him so it's not a big deal, just annoying that he won't admit it

This was a fantastic video of speedrunning! I only wish the explanation of what was wrong was AFTER they made their guesses of the specified game so that we could have attempted a guess without the playlist.
This was pretty cool, especially when you know/watch multiple of the people who participated here. If you ever do this again, I think you should pick 5 games, one that tailors to the specific game one of the speedrunners runs (DarkViper and GTA 5, Summoning Salt and Super Mario Bros.) and see if the other 4 speedrunners can catch the discrepancy, and if the speedrunner who runs that game remembers all the tricks in it.
"Even if all you did was Splice"*SPLICE*"A few different runs together." Wonderful job, Jobst. Also if it's still going on? You got our support on your case against big bad Billy.
This was a super fun idea for a video, you should do this again sometime! I watched the clips but the only one I could figure out was the Frigate one thanks to already knowing about the Henning Blom situation
Cool new concept! This was a treat. I always like hearing speedrunners' thoughts about unfamiliar speedgames. Maybe it stems from the novelty of different subcommunities mingling.
@@magickmskh Oh he definitely knows, but it was close to a decade ago, and I can tell you he probably doesn't care. I doubt he thought people would've believed it anyway, like I said on another comment, he's not a speedrunner, he has no previous history with speedrunning, he's simply an entertainer who plays videogames.
I just went down a rabbithole googling this and found 10 year old reddit posts of people accusing markiplier of cheating this fnaf thing and they all get laughed off stage and downvoted. Now I don't know who's right and I'm so invested. I don't even watch markiplier or play fnaf.

His 10/20 completion was done on the Custom Night that had only the withered animatronics. None of the toy animatronics move at all in the final clip, and BB has a obvious audio cue you can use to track it
@@koolaid33like the other comment said. Mark wasn’t ever trying to speedrun. He was just trying to complete the difficult challenges. He couldn’t or didn’t have the patience to which is why he spliced and made an easier run. Essentially he just scripted the video which is similar to content like Dream’s minecraft manhunts. Nothing wrong with making that, but passing it off as genuine is silly and bad taste when actual people do the challenges
@@monetary687 They never really hated each other, afaik there was just some "drama" about matt saying "he doesn't consider Karl his *friend* " because he doesn't really have anything to do with him and Karl not really liking that. ... but nothing more really happend. I'd be interested to see how he did at a memory test, he has to memorize a lot of tracks and his memory for the details of how these runs were cheated was insane so I imagine he would do really well.
If you listen closely at 16:06 you'll hear Wirtual say "This final one ...". I think thats pretty clear evidence that @karljobst spliced this video to get a better time. Kinda obvious if you think about it :p

15:15 classical SmallAnt. He is too smart for his own good x) He knew it but throws it with pure confidence.
You think if he watched the clip where the weapon being put away, is the same one that was used during the level... he would've changed his mind?
I mean it wouldn't have changed anything tho, he thought that bond should have the machine gun so the second clip would've just proven him right. In the end he knew what the mistake was, he just thought that the pistol is the right weapon
Great example of how Game Logic can work very differently than real life. Logically Bond would put away the weapon he used in the level, but Game Logic dictates he puts away the default weapon since he switched to unarmed.
so right and so wrong
@@The_Endless_Nownah cos he thought it was SUPPOSED to be the machine gun, he didnt know that no gun = pistol and the most recently used gun was machine gun
People are talking about wirtual's knowledge, but i think Smant's analysis is really impressive. He noticed things others didn't, and while he didnt have the specific game knowledge, his answers were all pretty close. The fact he was able to pick out exactly what was wrong in games he hadn't even played is awesome, even if he misunderstood the 007 one and didn't know the exact scandals the splices were from
Smallant's deduction was really impressive. If he had just watched the second clip from 007 I think he would have gotten the right answer for sure.
Yeah, although he lacked knowledge, his analysis was very good. Wirtual either knew all of these cheating scandals or looked them up, considering he was the only one who did a post commentary analysis.
@@StAngerNo1 You mean it is possible that he cheated on the cheating analysis? He Spliced the splicedetection?
@@bertholdb9037 Well, I would not call it cheating, since he had to find the exact way the run was cheated by himself, but he could have looked up what cheating scandals existed in the history of this games to see if he can find any of these in the videos.
@@StAngerNo1
He specifically talked about watching Karl's videos in the past, and someone else got the correct answer I think because they had watched Karl's videos (I have ADD and my short term memory is a sieve) so I wouldn't give Smant a round of applause for his analysis...it's more weighted towards those who happen to know what to look for, either because they know that particular game very well or because they had knew the scandals that happened in that community...probably by watching Karl's videos lol.
Karl should make this a series, it's very fun to play along and watch the other runners come to their conclusions! I even know someone who could craft two almost identical Donkey Kong runs but then again, they would probably both be fake!
It technically is a series. Its the 3rd video.
When will we get someone eating a pizza while their character is responding to inputs?
Would be legitimately interesting to see ZFG, Linkus, Atrioc, and AstralSpiff do these for their own genre of game specialities...people who are very well versed in the glitches and quirks of their games.
I just realize that was SmallAnt going against his own rule, to never throw even if he has advantage
Smant done got the 3rd one wrong for the right reasons
That feels like such specific game knowledge to expect someone to know if they don't already know the game, expecting Bond to be holding the gun he was last seen holding is much more logical.
@@bostonrailfan2427 well no, you would assume the clip is with the last gun held, even if he was unarmed. you'd need specific gameknowledge to know that if bond was unarmed he would be holding a pistol. so yeah i would have come to the same conclusion that the pistol one was fake

What Smant did with the 3rd one is what "pulling a Wirtual" means.
That's actually a pretty interesting idea, I would love to see how that would play out
@@thesuperginge1348 People are doing this.
